Play with Thought Gorger to at least replenish your hand. If R/BDW could spare the mana you're basically swinging for six, and then getting that last bit of burn in, though triple black is hard to spare.

I don't think that you guys see the potential of this card. Imagine a burn deck, or a deck with a bunch of fatties. In a burn deck, you could *potentially* get 6 burn spells, but you'd be more likely to get 3 or 4, depending on the deck. Still, there is 6 damage from this guy, and let's say you have 3 Lighning Bolt style cards. That's about 15 damage. Also, imagine getting a few Eldrazi. You get a couple of those annihilators out, and you can quickly level your opponents forces. You also don't HAVE to attack with this guy, just let him sit there once you get a few good creatures out.

Why can't you gents think about more then playing it in standard, I've been play testing it all week, with a proxy. Play him in a Legacy Reanimator, you'll be able to play him in the first two turns then you should be able to reanimate or directly cast anywhere between 2 and 4 other large creatures. My best cast with him was at the end of turn two I had out aside from him, Akroma, Angel of Wrath, Iona, Shield of Emeria, Sphinx of the Steel Wind and Thraximundar. Let your opponent deal with that, I'm sure he will have a ton of fun.

Splinter Twin with something to untap or Renegade Doppleganger, hit with both -> Top 12 Cards can be played for free... (or whatever the cost of the combo you just played was). Pretty reasonable to me! Especially if you do a Treasure Hunt first as was suggested to make sure you're not just grabbing lands. When 1/5 of your deck gets put into play for free... on a single turn... unless you're really unlucky you've got a couple of bombs out or a lot of burns!

Do I really have to spell this out for you? Fine. Selective Memory, Maybe a few Sage Owl -like cards, and treasure hunt if you need it. Then stack all of your Eldrazi and/or other gigantic creatures on top, then swing. Congrats, you just sacked all of your lands that you will most likely ever get in the future for 36+ mana worth of creatures (and that's just the Legendary 3 eldrazi). also, Crucible of Worlds helps a little.

When I see big expensive creature cards like this that say "When this creature deals combat damage" I think if I'm in the position where I've got a 6/6 flyer damaging the opponent then I am already in a winning position. It takes a well thought out deck to get the most of this creature ability and I'm not sure it's worth the effort.
Another combo for extended: Twilight Shepherd from Shadowmoor will work perfectly with this one.
In standard, i'd like to use hellcarver with eldrazis (not much combo going on there) but to add some real combo fun i want try these cards: - Needlebite Trap = if you get 4 of these, your opponent will lose 20 life and you'll gain 20! - Rise from the grave = fairly obvious. - Bogardan Hellkite = 5/5 with 5 damage. that extra 5 (plus the 6 from Hellcarver) can even kill the opponent if he's down to 11. if you got 3 Lightning bolts from the exiled cards then he's dead! - World at War = ok i'm not really sure but will Hellcarver be able to attack again? if it can it'll be another free 6 cards!!! - Mirror of Fate = Now this will be a real killer with the right top 6 cards! I'm gonna try to make these two cards broken!
Ok, so build up till you have 5 mana, play Vess(Or tutor her on with 4 if you can't seem to draw her). Use her to pull the demon to the top. Next turn play the demon, and if you have Emrakul in your hand, use Liliana to discard him, shuffling him back. Finally, next turn, use Liliana to put Emrakul on the top of your deck and swing with the demon.
Free and easy way to pull Emrakul into play.
This card seems like it was MADE to synergise with Vess. You get choice pick what you get using her, or if you pull her using his ability, she can bring everything you sacrificed back.

3.5 stars? this card is amazing!!! this is one of the easiest way to play any of the big eldrazi without paying any mana. I used him in a draft. let me tell you, in one turn, i played about 4 creatures, 2 ulamogs crushers, one it that betrays and some small creature. I managed to play two awesome spells, flame slash and hyena umbra. Now in one turn i was able to get 32 attack power out and all i had to do was sac 5 lands and a couple of creatures. I won in 7 turns. 5/5 for me
Guess what else shares a BBB cost in Standard today? That's right, Cruel Ultimatum! Grixis midrange, enjoy.

The earlier you get this card out, the better. I was playing a casual game with my friend and I got this out on turn 2 with 2 dark rituals. discarded my memdiocre hand and the 2 swamp in play for... 2 vampire nighthawks, 2 eldrazi con***ions, an escaped null, and nemisis trap (which I saved for his only creature next turn). Turn 3 win, with 44 life at the end, all thanks to hellcarver. Many people overlook the fact that the 6 cards you exile can be played at anytime, you don't have to play them right then and there. However, there are some drawbacks to this card. When you already have a ton of mana, a good amount of creatures, and a decent hand 9 turns into the game, he is next to useless. :( Having said that, this card has HUGE potential. Worst case senerio with this is a 6/6 with flying, no hand, and 6 land.

6 mana for a 6/6 flyer? Scour your deck and cast for free? Sure you lose everything else but if that's not advantagous then... Don't attack maybe? Solid card, not too OP because of possibilty to backfire. Easy 5/5.
not just cascade... more of a cascade meets ninjitsu and has devil's child
EDIT: i made a play-test T2 deck for him and get emrakul & at least 1 other epic card (eldrazi titan, ultimatum, bolas...) out by turn 7 every time. i stretched to T1 and use dark rituals to same effect ~ turn 4 and at the most, turn 7 not trying to brag, just pointing out how miserably underrated he is. also just plane fun btw, boulderv8 is genious w/ mirror of fate. Use that and selective memory ftw
EDIT 2: @ takenbyshadow: if it said 'anytime' then they'd all be instants. I'm no rule guru and don't pretend to be one but I think you can save spells and cast later, but I'm probobly missing some subtle yet obvious detail

@BiOhyBr
actually you do have to play the exiled cards then and there, and not at any time you want to. if you could, it would say "you may play the exiled cards at any time" in the rule text.
i've had some really great success with this card. only once did i hit and sac for 5 lands and one useless spell...other than that, usually a turn 7 win every time. 5/5
So when our smirking friend here deals a player damage, you exile the top 6 off your library after ridding your side of any valuable worth albeit Hellcarver.
"You may cast...exiled this way etc..."
This way refers to the then and there, or, whenever it deals damage. It doesn't matter what type of card it plays, so long as it isn't a land card, or in what order they are played. Doesn't matter if it is a creature, sorcery, enchantment, instant, etc. should you choose not to play any number of those cards, kiss them goodbye because you won't get to see them again. and if you could, you'd have no mana to spend on them anyway...unless you cast realm razer before you attacked or something, but then you'd still need some way to play exiled cards. if you decided not to cast a few cards and you could play them at your leisure, then there would be a "you may play the exiled cards at any time." in Hellcarver Demon's rule text... as it stands, there is only whenever and this way.
hope that helps.

What really works well with it is Bloodghast
once I had four Bloodghast and little old hellcarver and myaponet had 16 heath and five walls
when I attacked he was dealed the six damage all my bloodghaust died and i retrived two incremental blights, one land, a doom blade, anowon: the rune sage, and feast of blood
i wiped all of his creatures of the bord and next turn i killed him with my returned bloodghasts.
all in all this card has worecked out perfectlly in my vampire deck and the other thing is, this card can work in a deck with out it biening a card that is your only way to win
if i could I would give it 125436098 stars but i can only give five

@AXER Agreed
Why don't we all just throw together a deck with this, emrakul, and lilianas that is an amazing trio and don't forget the lava axes and breaths of malfegor as an alt win con!
Relic of Progenitus to exile things as you discard them (including Emrakul, the Aeons Torn before his graveyard trigger resolves). Mirror of Fate to take 7 of said exiled things and replace your library with them. Dark Ritual to make sure you have enough black to get your Hellcarver out, and get him out early probably.
Best situation is having two mirrors early after getting Hellcarver out. This allows you to skip ALL of the setup and just activate/sac one, then while it's on the stack activate the other, then use the alternate use of the relic. Relic resolves, exiling all 3 of them. First mirror resolves, exile your whole library and put one mirror where your library was. Then second mirror resolves, exiling the mirror in your library and putting whatever 7 cards from your entire deck on top.
Now Distortion Strike your Hellcarver. Attack. Insert maniacal laugh for best effect.
Balance forces opponent to sac everything except one creature to match your Hellcarver. Ulamog kills his last creature and deals 10 damage from Pandemonium. Emrakuls gain you 3 turns and deal 45 more Pandemonium damage. Cause it wasn't enough to kill him. You had to wipe his board without even attacking with your annihilators.
And just in case you haven't killed your villain yet and don't want to get decked all those merfolk looters and islands and swamps and stuff you sacced with the Hellcarver's first attack get shuffled into your library with the first two Emrakuls that died from Legendary Rule.

use this guy until you can pull out a lord of extinction and xathrid demon with him. at that point theres a fair amount of cards in your graveyard, probably in theirs as well, then use xathrid to sac lord of extinction for 20+ straight damage. I have a lot of fatties like protean hydra, lurgyof, etc. in my GB deck for this reason. Plus you dont need mana when you have him, so getting rid of lands isn't as big of a blow as it comes off as.

I don't play standard, but I run two of this guy in my Demon deck, becuase of my insane high cost high power flyers, this guys easily gets about 3-5 of them from my deck to the field every time, and with my mana acceleration hes a turn 2-4 drop. occasionally ill drop him with a lightning greaves on the field so I get to smack with him right then and there. Though it's easily dealt with, any instant creature management screws him up so he's nowhere near OP, but I love dealing 6 dmg then summoning any variety of grinning demon, Havoc Demon, or Riever Demons on the field.

Of course, the hard part is deciding when to cast these cards, seeing as how they all have fading.

Do you guys have any idea how nasty this is in a Reanimator deck if it gets its hit in? Six cards to play for free that can be 1. powerful game altering creature in themselves, like the Platinum Artifact creatures, Iona, Reya, some of the Eldrazi, etc., or creatures that are nasty when they strike and which can be brought out and hasted early, cards like this demon or Nicol Bolas for example (see Shallow Grave, Goryo's Vengeance), or 2. cards that can resurrect such creatures, with the added bonus that because of Hellcarver Demon's first triggered ability effect you'll potentially have many such creatures already in your graveyard that you can resurrect and use to take down an opponent fast.

First ramp, then play the Hellcarver early. Scry/tweak until you have a time reversal in the top 6. If you have the time reversal resolve first then you have a hand, and can then use explore, after which you can have a harrow work. So technically, you could be packing counterspells after pulling this off.

Agatha plays Hellcarver Demon with an enthusiastic smirk toward the attractive demon. Later next turn, she attacks with Hellcarver Demon, sacrificing all of her assets, but allowing her to cast from her deck unabated. Cackling, Agatha raises an eye and says to her adversary, "I've got a few nice things here. Which would you like first?" To her horror, the opponent flicks a card repeatedly against his fingertips as if debating on whether or not to play it. As Agatha was already quite sure her opponent would be unable to respond to such a great card, she hides she shock and begs the player to reveal what he is considering. "Well, I think I'll choose none of those. Thank you, though," says the opponent. The horror returns to Agatha's face as a Mythic Rare blue-framed card enters play. Her opponent reads it aloud, noting the many teardrop symbols lining the top of the frame. "Exile target permanent". The opponent gestures to the alluring Hellcarver. "Return all exiled cards of the target's controller to the library."

Run him alongside Selective Memory and Mirror of Fate. Use the Selective Memory to exile a bunch of good stuff, like an Emrakul, Ulamog, and 4x Archive Trap. Swing with the Demon, and then if he hits respond to the trigger by sacrificing the Mirror of Fate, exchanging your library for the six or seven cards you exiled with Selective Memory. From rulings - "You cast nonland cards from exile as part of the resolution of Hellcarver Demon's ability.... You cast all of the cards you like, putting them onto the stack, then Hellcarver Demon's ability finishes resolving. The spells you cast this way will then resolve as normal, one at a time... @Arachnos Who said they had to be creatures? And nonland card is cast for free, in any order you choose. I'm feeling lazy so I'll do a simple win condition. You doomsday. Swing. Reveal the 5 cards you picked 3 laboratory Maniacs and 2 Ponders. You have the Lab maniac's resolve first, they come in, high five, go "sup dawg?" then you cast the 2 ponders (one at a time, obviously.) You draw your first card, win because there are no cards in your library. The extra draw and maniacs are for redundancy in case of spot removal. The doomsday + hellcarver can do much more, I'm sure. I just don't care enough to give a SUPER AWESOME WRECKSAUCE version.
there's ''better'' ways to cheat things into play if you were just going to use Progenitus or Emrakul, Aeons Torn or Blightsteel Colossus. But this set of cards gives you some nice flavor for your trouble. :)

Using him with Living Death effects and then hastey effects to attack quickly net me many a turn 3-4 win in epic fashion! (Who can be mad when you lose to 8 6/6s and a horde of imps pounding your face!?)
If it's not obvious, I'd get him out using an Apprentice Necromancer, Shallow Grave, or rituals, swing wildly and good things would happen. Via dredge cards or buried alive I'd have other fatties in the GY. One day, I'm going to build a Hellcarver deck. It will almost always lose, but when it wins, it will be spectacular.
It will use an innocuous Vedalken Orrery to cast Doomsday in response to the Hellcarver's ability going on the stack.
This card is a casual bomb! I agree with those saying he's a really good Legacy target for an awkward Dredge deck. Personally, I run a Jund-style deck using him as a the star. Turn 1-2 ReanimateHellcarver Demon. Next turn, all he has to do is get in their once. The deck runs Savage Beating which is a great target to "cascade" into, allowing him to attack again and get another 6 cards. Fury of the Horde is another good one to use; while it's useless to "cascade" into, you're going to discard cards from your hands with Hellcarver's eff so why not just exile two of the red cards pre-combat? Run some Bloodbraid Elfs to get ahead, some Avalanche Riders to set your opponent back, Bloodghast just in case your Savage Beating rampage doesn't work out, and some Dread Return for more senseless violence.
Makes for a really fun deck :)

And here we have the number one candidate for sexiest demon of all time, reclining on a couch of corpses, iiiiiit's Hellcarver Demon!

This is my favorite card in Magic. First off, a 6/6 flyer for 6, while nothing special, is on the curve and works nicely. His ability, though, screams finisher, and in the most Pyrrhic manner possible. My favorite combo in the game is to cast Doomsday before swinging with him, and then stack the deck in favor of destroying your opponents. Worldfire, followed by successive burn spells, will end the game. But even if you can't stack the deck, the odds that you'll play something useful off of his attack are relatively high. I know it isn't the best card in the game, but it is the card that I built my first deck around. It's a cheap mythic rare that makes the game fun and speaks to the combo lover in all of us. 5/5

4/5
step 2: give opponent hellcarver demon
step 3: use rage nimbus to force hellcarver demon to attack, watch opponent sacrifice all other permanents
step 4: avoid dying to the 6 cards your opponent can play for free
step 5: kill hellcarver demon with heat ray
step 6: win
When the opponent force it to attach and don't defend, use momentous fall :D
Or any thing that trigger a lot when it go to graveyard?
1) Mad Auntie
2) Goblin King
3) Murderous Redcap
4) Murderous Redcap!
5) Murderous Redcap!!
6) Murderous Redcap!!! (16 damage from the redcaps plus 6 from hellcarver! good game!)
*** play it with goblin recruiter in vintage to quickly set up the top 6!
Another combo for extended: Twilight Shepherd from Shadowmoor will work perfectly with this one.
In standard, i'd like to use hellcarver with eldrazis (not much combo going on there) but to add some real combo fun i want try these cards:
- Needlebite Trap = if you get 4 of these, your opponent will lose 20 life and you'll gain 20!

Liliana Vess X4
Diabolical Tutor X4
Hellcarver Demon X4
Emrakul X1
Having said that, this card has HUGE potential. Worst case senerio with this is a 6/6 with flying, no hand, and 6 land.
Scour your deck and cast for free?
Sure you lose everything else but if that's not advantagous then... Don't attack maybe?
Solid card, not too OP because of possibilty to backfire. Easy 5/5.
not just cascade... more of a cascade meets ninjitsu and has devil's child
EDIT: i made a play-test T2 deck for him and get emrakul & at least 1 other epic card (eldrazi titan, ultimatum, bolas...) out by turn 7 every time.
i stretched to T1 and use dark rituals to same effect ~ turn 4 and at the most, turn 7
not trying to brag, just pointing out how miserably underrated he is.
also just plane fun
btw, boulderv8 is genious w/ mirror of fate. Use that and selective memory ftw
EDIT 2: @ takenbyshadow: if it said 'anytime' then they'd all be instants. I'm no rule guru and don't pretend to be one but I think you can save spells and cast later, but I'm probobly missing some subtle yet obvious detail
actually you do have to play the exiled cards then and there, and not at any time you want to. if you could, it would say "you may play the exiled cards at any time" in the rule text.
i've had some really great success with this card. only once did i hit and sac for 5 lands and one useless spell...other than that, usually a turn 7 win every time. 5/5
EDIT1: @BlackAlbino
"whenever Hellcarver Demon deals combat damage... Exile etc..."
Agreed
Why don't we all just throw together a deck with this, emrakul, and lilianas that is an amazing trio and don't forget the lava axes and breaths of malfegor as an alt win con!
I also have some fresh Mind Controls and Wall of Frosts to stall while I get all the setup going.
Replace your deck with:
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre
Pandemonium
Balance
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn

We're all going to hell for playing this, LOLOLOL
say i have this guy and 2 hippies out, i swing with all three and no blockers are declared, what happen next? do i get to put the triggers on the stack in the order i choose? (i.e. demon's, hippie 1, hippie 2... then the stack starts to relsove) any help with this would be great, thanks in advance.
"Any cards you can't cast (because they're lands or they have no legal targets, perhaps) or choose not to cast simply remain exiled."
@HairlessThoctar: *rofl*
Definitely a card that needs to be played around. Utility creatures and spells just won't do with this. Someone mentioned Lava Axes and Breath of Malfegors ... I'd like to see a multiplayer deck made from those cards lol.
Yup, there's a deck right there.
5/5
Parallax Tide
What's that? There's some creatures you want to stick around, too?
Try Parallax Wave.
Of course, the hard part is deciding when to cast these cards, seeing as how they all have fading.
Also, Insidious Dreams since you're going to be discarding your hand anyways. Almost single-handedly sets up Barren Glory (if you exile Barren Glory and cast it after connecting with Hellcarver)
First ramp, then play the Hellcarver early. Scry/tweak until you have a time reversal in the top 6. If you have the time reversal resolve first then you have a hand, and can then use explore, after which you can have a harrow work. So technically, you could be packing counterspells after pulling this off.
Probably too much effort.
:D
It includes Tidehollow Sculler, Oblivion Ring, Journey to Nowhere, and Realm Razer and has not lost yet, 24-0.
I was on amateur tournament and I used it. It was fun but when he used his stupid spell and remove this crad from the game, I didnt have lands :D You must know how to cast it. But really, powerful as shi*t.
THIS IS STRANGE; YOU ARE A STRANGE DEMON.
Very nice if you got a couple of fatties in the top 6 cards, but since you lose all your land...
That can get you killed pretty hard in the face.
I'd play it with Barren Glory and some effect that would let you sac the demon; probably Damnation or Pox or something. The only issue is protecting the Glory. It's also fun if you use Champion cards, Faceless Butchers, Fiend Hunters, and O-Rings to hide guys that'll come back when his ability goes off.
Chromeshell Crab, Gauntlets of Chaos, Juxtapose, and Legerdemain are acceptable alternatives to Donate. Also, Puca's Mischief, Spawnbroker, and/or Bazaar Trader can replace Donate in Modern. Incite can replace Alluring Siren in nonblue decks.
If using Bazaar Trader, also use Swiftfoot Boots and pseudo-donate the demon after casting Silence during your opponent's upkeep to help ensure success.
Optional: Spirit Loop(s) on Hellcarver Demon.
Also really funny if you flip a Restore Balance or Ancestral Visions.
You can only cast the exiled cards as the ability is resolving. The cards do remain exiled but you can't play them at any time without paying their mana cost. You get one opportunity to cast the top six before resolution ends.
Any cards you can't cast (because they're lands or they have no legal targets, perhaps) or choose not to cast simply remain exiled."
Also, his face kinda reminds me of Robert Englund, the actor who played Freddy Kruger in the original Nightmare on Elm Street series; definitively a plus.
4 STARS (Plus .5 a star for looking like an awesome actor) OUT OF 5.
this guy saved me in a two headed giant against an infect and burn deck
i was using my demon deck and my friend was using his golem deck
we had 6 poison counters and 24 life
but I swung with this guy and got out Warstorm Surge, Kozilek, and Balefire Dragon.
Then it was pretty much game.
Yissss.
Avacyn, Angel of Hope
Akroma, Angel of Wrath
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
Rakdos the Defiler
Griselbrand
Desolation Angel (use mana-floating tricks to pay the kicker)
there's ''better'' ways to cheat things into play if you were just going to use Progenitus or Emrakul, Aeons Torn or Blightsteel Colossus. But this set of cards gives you some nice flavor for your trouble. :)
My deck ran 2 of these guys with 4 Bogardan Hellkite and two Emrakuls. If I see Emrakul with Hellcarver's ability, I get to cast him for free along with any of the dragons I'd hit.
If it's not obvious, I'd get him out using an Apprentice Necromancer, Shallow Grave, or rituals, swing wildly and good things would happen. Via dredge cards or buried alive I'd have other fatties in the GY. The hope was that he'd run into those mass resurrection effects and net me huge numbers of demons; which happened often! :D:D:D:D::::D
It will use an innocuous Vedalken Orrery to cast Doomsday in response to the Hellcarver's ability going on the stack.
I will then leave in my library:
A counterspell just in case.
Doubling Season
Tamiyo, the Moon Sage
Omniscience
Searing Wind or Sorin's Vengeance
Goodbye, anyone and everyone.
Makes for a really fun deck :)
This is what a demon should be.
This is what a black card should be.
