Rakdos needs:
Basic Tribal Land - Demon Swamp
Basic Tribal Land - Demon Mountain
It's not fun getting him offed after he attacks, but before he deals damage.

Rakdos was my second ever legend. (First was Tsabo Tavoc). To this day, I still have him in my B/R deck.
Just imagine the havoc he can wreak. I've gotten him onto the battlefield early with Deathrender. Although his bro Malfegor is better with the blade, Rakdos is just the kind of card you want to build your deck around.

Should have been printed as "whenever Rakdos attacks, sacrifice a nondemon permanent you control"
Lightning greaves helps this guy big time. Add the fact both Dark ritual and Seething song can get him out faster and this guy becomes just ugly. Even if you have to lose everything but him, get him out before a wrath and the games yours.

Actually ToidiDiPuts you'd only sacrifice 3/4ths of your non-Demon permanents if you attacked with 2 of these with Mirror Gallery in play. Each trigger would go on the stack independently and resolve one at a time. The first one takes out 1/2 of your non-demon permanents and the 2nd one takes out half of the ones that are left over so you could theoretically have enough permanents to keep mirror gallery in play so they wouldn't die to the legends rule. Or you could also March of the Machines + Conspiracy to ensure you never have to sac the Gallery to Rakdos.

Hey with the right set up, your opponent will be lucky if he can do anything once ol' Rakdos hits the party. And I agree Malfegor is better, especially for Hellbent. (Think they mixed these guys up?) But why not play both? You CAN have one of each of them in play.

I was so excited to get a copy of the leader of the Rakdos guild! Like most demons, he offers you mana-efficient power in return for sacrifice. Rakdos' sacrifice, though, is steeper than most, to make up for his extremely strong combat damage trigger. As many people here have pointed out, you would really hesitate to use him for fear of attacking, sacrificing dutifully and then having him "swordsed" before he deals any damage to your opponent.
If you ever had a way to get Rakdos into play "tapped and attacking" (a la ninjutsu), though... he would be a force to be reckoned with. Volrath's Shapeshifter comes to mind. I'm sure there must be other tricks...

@Demonic Math Tutor
Rakdos would probably make a better EDH general, if only because there's no fun in playing against a Kaervek deck. Using Kaervek suggests that you don't care about fun or good deck construction; it just makes you look like a jerk. As for Rakdos, he's scary, but he can backfire rather easily. In EDH, where Swords to Plowshares and Trickbind are staples, Rakdos can easily end up hurting you a lot more than an opponent. He also becomes markedly less threatening in multiplayer games. If you're looking for a black-red general, Malfegor is probably a better choice. He quickly sweeps your opponents' board (something that very few generals can do) and your deck will be built to make having cards in your graveyard a positive. I know I didn't really answer your "Which is better?" question, but Malfegor is an option you should consider.

if you splash blue for sakiahima the impostor then you can get 2 rakdo's out.when i started playing magic i loved black/red when i went and saw the art of rakdos i thought he had bad-ass picture ran him just cause . I wish he would they word him better have been so much better if he just destroyed 2 lands an attack. or at least made his ability when he attacks everybody sacrifices permanents. a decent ability on him would 2 damage to each creature and player. hellbent--3 damage to the defending player each creature he or she controls damage. that would actually make sense since it would go with the whole mechanic of the guild.
This combos beautifully with Kaalia of the Vast...you don't get the drawback, but the opponent does.

You ALWAYS have to sac the permanents. They don't. It just doesn't seem worth it to me. It's certainly not a finisher. Maybe at a 10/9 it might be worth the drawback. Plus, what happens when you attack, sac your lands, and they Fog you or something. Then, the next turn, they hit him with a pacifism or a claustrophobia. You're done.
A friend pointed out the benefit with Kaalia. I stared at it for a minute and realized that since The Balrog isn't in play during the declare attackers step, the effect of you having to sacrifce when he comes into play attacking doesn't happen.
He's a great one shotter like that, and if used as a focal point in a deck focused around demons, if you thrown in blood speaker, and rune-scarred demon, fun times for you.

could work well with Demonic Rising and Homicidal Seclusion? He forces you to sacrifice a lot of stuff and if the game is in a bad stalemate this could give you just enough steam to get going if you have to keep saccing lands (as they do qualify as non-demon permanents).

So sac infinity tokens, which leaves you with infinity tokens and all of your non-token permanents. Infinity is a weird concept.

You guys realize that you don't get to skip the negative drawback from rakdos by using khalia, correct? explain how him entering the field tapped and attacking does not fall under "whenever rakdos attacks..." i hope this doesn't become another rediculous scenario where the rules printed on the card are ignored to give people an opportunity that the card was designed to prevent again as the legal rule.

@Nagrus: In Magic, "attacks" mean exactly one thing: "be declared as an attacker in the Decalre Attackers step". With Kaalia, Rakdos is never declared as an attacker but rather enters the battlefield attacking, so this ability does not trigger. The fact that you don't understand the rules doesn't mean that people who do are cheating. Seriously, read the Comprehensive Rules before you make statements like that. Asking questions is perfectly fine, but accusing people to change the rules for their own convenience is not.

Oni Possession is a must for all the Kaalia fans out there looking at this card.
With enough Black and White, and multi-Black/Red cards in your deck (remember- death triggers! :), you really don't need to be all that sad about your Angels and Dragons dying (I wouldn't go with All Demons, some cards are just too good to pass up- particularly Baneslayer Angel and Akroma) because you'll be able to Reanimate them out with some kind of Living Death effect anyway-
HOWEVER. You really don't want to be caught sacrificing Kaalia herself. Thanks to Aurelia, the Warbringer you might find yourself in the midgame actually not minding at all the idea of sacrificing Sol Ring or your Signets, because your cards are just a little stupid good together. :3 But Kaalia of the Vast is a non-Demon permanent, and a forced sacrifice is something no Lightning Greaves or Sword of War and Peace can save her from.
Oni Possession might seem like a steep investment to make Rakdos the Defiler able to shine as much as he needs to, but you'll have enough Tutors and if you really really want to fetch Rakdos as your first beatstick every game, white has some cards specifically good for enchantments and auras to smoothly get Oni Possession when and where you need it.

Cheating this with Kaalia wouldn't trigger the drawback, because he was never declared as an attacker.
This is the dream: Equip him with Fireshrieker and Whispersilk Cloak, attack, devastate an opponent, cast Relentless Assault, attack, devastate another opponent. Then sadly die to your other opponent(s) in your EDH group but it was fun while it lasted

In Kaalia, just attack and wrath their board. Yet another reason we're happy that Karakas is not legal in EDH.
Just attacked with this card turn 3, opponent was playing a mill deck.
Turn1: mountain. Turn2: swamp, sootstoke kinder, attacked with it, he milled this card into my graveyard. Turn3: reanimate, give Rakdos haste, attack with Rakdos, sacrificing lands, Win turn 5
Use with Rakdos's Return or Blightning so your opponent won't just plow this card and this nasty demon wins you the game. Sure, it destroys your stuff as well but with that big of a body AND flying/trample it shuts your opponent's game to it's tracks. Incredibly fun, don't know how this would do in EDH though.
