I love Blaze for being able to target players, but this has the nice perk of being instant.

Stop comparing xr burn spells to blaze.
Fireball is the poster child of xr burn spells.

Why is this rated so low? It's cheap, it's powerful, and it's an instant. What's not to love?

It's not cheap, but it's not exactly crap. Combine with Lava Axe or Quenchable Fire.

actually, red is like...the faster spawner in the set...in my opinion

The only thing it has over Flame Slash is instant speed.... that's it.
They do the same amount of damage, 4, if this pays 5 mana whilst Flame Slash only pays 1.
Only once you get into huge numbers does it become better than Flame Slash..... and what are you trying to kill that's so big anyway? An Eldrazi? Good luck tapping out ALL your mana to get rid of one creature.

i think its not a bad trade off to have it as an instant that can only target creatures. I also think that the quotation on this is pretty funny.

This card is a solid 3/5. It's just a little above average. Not nearly enough to be competitive. But might just be enough for a few causal players to run it.

Heat Ray: Deals X damage to target creature.

Blaze: Deals X damage to target creature or player.

Red Sun's Zenith: Deals X damage to target creature or player, exiles any creature destoyed by it AND gets shuffled back into the library after use.

Verdict? 2.5/5. Only higher than 2 as the others are Uncommon (as well as Fireball) and Rare respectively.

Staggershock, Flame Slash, Forked Bolt. IMO Red made out like a bandit in Rise, because the cards were good for the classic strategy: kill them in the face. Much of zendikar block asked players to make up new decks to accomodate the cards, which is good for the overall game, but sometimes I just want to see White Weenie, Black Graveyard, Red Burn, Green AGGRO Elves/Monsters (NOT Combo), and Blue...well Blue can just go f*k itself, but the others are cool.

Heat Ray is a card whose inclusion in this set is designed for Limited. Of course its not Contructed good. The point is, having this show up at common in packs meant that yes, in fact, there WAS something you could do about an Eldrazi other than pray you open the Rare/Mythic X-spell you might actually use in a Constructed deck. There were plenty of targets that this card was happy to answer. a few Kozileks even bit it where I played. The funny thing about an Eldrazi is it takes a while to conjure. long enough to build up the mana to play this against them. mana ramp goes both ways too. An X damage spell at instant speed in common would make most limited formats impossibly frustrating for anyone playing creatures. Name the last Limited deck you saw that didn't use creatures. that's what I thought.

Heat Ray= solid in my book. does what its supposed to, can't ask more than that.

X spells are rather useless if you cant target players. making it an instant is a small condolence of loosing the primary function of x burn. If a creature is large enough that normal burn spells wont cut it, this wont ether, as you wont have the mana for it.

I used to be content reading Gatherer card reviews, never having seen the need to sign up as a member to actually rate and comment on cards. Not when there are already tons of experts out there giving all the valuable input there could possibly be.

Until I saw the comments of people comparing this card to Blaze. And I knew that as a responsible MTG player, I couldn't just sit there and do nothing. So i signed up for a Wizards account at long last, after seven years of passive reading, just so i could say this:

Blaze is a sorcery.

Blaze,
it's a sorcery.

Our Death Ray doesn't seem to be working. I'm standing right in it... and I'm not dead yet.

@gorgoncube

I understand your feeling, but this particular standard is where blue players could easily tap themselves out on turn four for Jace and Everflowing Chalice, and still manage to survive. Wizards gave us powercreep and people forgot what it's like to play strategically, thus the difference between sorcery and instant were lost.

Its a limited removal spell. In constructed there is a plethora of smarter options, but this still is reasonable.
