At the absolute worst, Jace is a free card plus direct damage/attack directed away from your face, for three mana. I'll take that.

he doesn't seem that impressive. If you have a couple of Underworld dreams out, that make him an unstable fella. Not that hes bad, but not overly great either.

Jace and Jace's Erasure alone make a mill deck. Throw in underworld drams, liliana, and liliana's caress, and they're screwed to the max.

I think lil' Jace actually still has some playability in standard. He's not Mind Sculptor, true, but he does have a few significant advantages over big jace:

1. He costs 1 less. This is actually pretty significant, as mind sculptor competes with lots of other good 4 drops- like Day of Judgement.

2. His +2 does something for you immediately. Fatesealing just isn't that good, and you almost always need to do it immediately to put big jace out of lightning bolt range. The howling mine effect is, in most cases, superior for the control decks that tend to play jace.

3. His final ability is easier to activate. It costs less, and it's just easier to protect jace long enough for him to 'go off' with a constant howling mine effect than it is to protect a constant fateseal.

4. He doesn't cost 80$ a pop.

i like him better than 2.0 because he's less of a target, and people are less likely to try and use his ultimate to win.

Pulled this, a Frost Titan, and a Sarkhan the Mad all in one day. God, do I love good luck days like this. With all the scrying in this set, this card almost reaches the hights his Mindsculptor form did.

his plus provides 2 and it dosnt suck, and he is a good card without the epic. i have seen multiple decks that will use duble sided draw efects to extreems combined with cards that keep you from feeling the disadvantage, and sense those decks are usually mill decks, jace provides a cheep card that will reward you for doing what your deck dose anyway. while he dosnt fit in many decks, he is defenintly solid in the ones he dose.

i am also I am quite surprised that no one has pointed out that he is the cheapest planeswalker.

It's interesting how many blue/white control decks run 1,2, or even 3 copies of little Jace now, alongside their 2/3 copies of big Jace. Sun Titan has really increased his playability, and so has mana leak, since you just don't want to be tapping out that often these days, particularly not on turn 4. The move towards permission control and away from tap-out means that little Jace has really started to shine post-m11.

this card rocks the socks and i have it in a blue mill/artifact deck (i only play for fun so it is open format)...add some jace erasure's and tome scour and millstone and this is a steady way to make your opponent deck out, adding stuff to make you draw cards accelerates the milling via the jace's erasures and before ya know it you have ten counters on berelen and pop...game over...if the mill doesn't work i usually manage to have a bunch of artifacts and play broodstars and clones of them, steel overseer doesn't hurt either...i'm thinking of adding tezz to this and having something pretty special

I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of original Jace. Let's consider what happens when you play him (ignoring the Howling Mine effect, since it really isn't good from a card advantage standpoint, though you might use it before he dies):

3 mana
Draw a card
Dies to bolt, shock, or an attack with any power 2+ creature

3 mana
Draw 2 cards
Dies to bolt, shock, etc

3 mana
Draw 3 cards, dies

Would I pay 3 mana for a cantrip optional (for the opponent) Fog? I doubt it.
Would I pay 3 mana for Divination plus an optional Fog? Now that sounds better.
Would I pay 3 mana for 3 cards? Hell yes.

The problem, however, is that your opponent gets to decide how good he is. If he hits Jace with an attack or bolt after one card, I always feel like I've wasted 3 mana. If he spends a card to kill it, at least I'm up a card (1 card spent , 1 card drawn, opponent played 1 card), but if he kills him with an attack, I've just spent 3 mana to draw a card and prevent some damage. I'm underwhelmed.

So I pulled this in a M11 (along with a holo Drowned Catacomb, sweet) and I traded a few things for my friend's JvC Jace. I might make a Standard Mill deck now.

I also remember when I was watching a duel. One of my friends was using a B/Bk deck of sorts, and Jaced himself. He sent his top 20 cards to his grave and finished with Mortal Combat. Fatality.

I must say I like when my opponent plays this Planeswalker. It is the cheapest indeed, but no one can refuse free draws! That's why I usually hurt him ennough not to allow him to use his last ability, but not too much so that he's stays alive. Besides, if I ever wanted to destroy him, I'd do that just before he gets to use his last ability.

He's pretty good in standard. Card draw which prevents your opponent easily landing a Jace TMS. Fishable with Sun Titan meaning you can keep on drawing. Can draw burn spells, resulting in 2 for 1s.

For people talking about leaving him around because their opponent is constantly using his +2... if they are, they're doing it wrong (in standard at least; though I don't believe mill is a huge strategy in the other formats either). The only time to use the +2 is if he's on one loyalty and you don't have another Jace v1 or v2 to drop behind him, and if your opponent isn't playing blue then it's still debatable. If you don't remove him ASAP, your opponent is getting 2-3 cards for 3 mana, which is fantastic.

@Guest5137etc... you say your opponent gets to decide, but really, the state of the battlefield gives you a pretty good indication of whether or not Jace will die to an attack. Unless they're playing hasty dudes (typically Vengevine or Goblin Guide in standard), you can tell if he's going to die or not based on the creatures you've got vs the creatures your opponent has. Even if they end up removing a blocker to get through to Jace, you've forced them to use a removal spell on a creature they might not have otherwise.

He's obviously not as good as his future self, but he still has his uses. In standard, there's a good reason why many decks run 4 v2s and 2+ v1s. When I'm playing UW/UB, I'm almost never unhappy to drop one of these on turn 3.

Viridian Joiner

★☆☆☆☆ (1.5/5.0) (2 votes)
In my opinion the worst Planeswalker ever printed.
In 95% of all cases he is just a better Temple Bell.
Better Temple Bell in the way that your enemy draws cards but only every third turn rather than each turn.

Most resolved Ultimates from the other Planeswalkers mean you allmost won. Or at least those are real win conditions. Your Enemy has drawn at least four cards to until you can finally use Jace Belerens ultimate.

There are only two reasons why this card sees any play:
1.Because he's a Vindicate vs the real Jace
and
2. Because one deck type utilizes what would be a disadvantage in any other deck: Force your enemy to draw. But neither is Turbofog that good atm nor means it the card is good.
Scornful Egotist is also utter crap as a card but has it's uses because of it's disadvantage.

He now has a pet named Consecrated Sphinx, to kill any down side from his +2 ability. I'll let you draw 1 so I can draw 3... I know its getting a little comboish, but adding Jace's Erasure now makes them draw 1 you draw 3 and they mill 3, how better can you spell card advantage???

One of my Favorite planeswalkers ever. Why? because he's is pretty the only planeswalker you can drop and your opponenet(s) won't go "OH CRAP WE GOTTA IT AND THE PLAYER (aka you) ASAP" having said that anyone smart enough will probably kill him quickly.
Personally i dont actively compare him to Money-Sculpter cuase thats just not fair (obviously Money-Sculpter is better and cost 12 times as much, but get over it). this guy is still one the best 3 drops around and i know its been said but a Kicked Rite of Replication on a Consecrated Sphinx and this guys +1 equals your opponents draws 1 and you draw 13 (or more depending on how many opponents you have), gotta love it...5/5 anyday

@ajpinton: Or even better: FOUR Jace's Erasures and at least TWO Consecrated Sphinxes: MORE CARDS FROM DECK TO SOMEWHERE along with his ultimate EVERY FREAKING TURN while GAINING loyalty counters:

Each player draws 1. Because your opponent(s) drew one, you draw four more (per opponent in the game). Because you drew four per opponent, and one from Jace himself, you get to activate all four Erasures FIVE TIMES AT THE MINIMUM! Let's count that. They drew 1 card, then milled... four times five is... twenty. Oh, wait. His ultimate says this: "-10: Target player puts the top twenty cards of his or her deck into his or her graveyard". You just preformed this for +2, ALONG with making them draw a card, for a total of 21 cards taken out of their deck. Not to mention the Jace's Erasure activations at the start of your turn, or the Consecrated Sphinx and Jace's Erasure when you decide to END your turn.

Note: I've actually been able to pull this off fairly consistantly with my personal mill deck. Just FYI.

Also, imagine the chaos of this: FOUR Consecrated Sphinx for this combo. Ouch. If only 2 is 16 milled, then 4 is 32, added to that extra four from your initial card. Ouch.

Jace is such a BAMF. Both versions. In my experience, Mind Sculptor doesn't tend to stay out too long - people are so scared of him he becomes an instant target. Beleren, however, makes people happy! Yay let's draw some cards! Beleren has helped me mill many an opponent, especially with Jace's Erasure to help out. Two of those and a Beleren just eat libraries. :)

So it looks like M12 is giving us Jace, Memory Adept in place of this guy. Unless I just totally got trolled by like 5 sites at the same time.

Jace, Memory Adept
{3}{U}{U}
Planeswalker – Jace Mythic Rare

+1: Draw a card. Target player puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
0: Target player puts the top 10 cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
-7: Any number of target players each draw twenty cards.
Loyalty 4

I really don't know. Of course Jace, the Mind Sculptor wasn't going to get a reprint. So it was Jace Beleren or something new. While it's nice that you can use JMA for straight draw while building loyalty without getting your opponent a card too (and actually a pretty cool ultimate for a mill/control deck), he's 5 CMC. 2 more than baby Jace (so what, Memory Adept must be Middle Sibling Jace), and one more than the general sweet spot for a 'walker. And the focus on milling befuddles me a bit, but perhaps it's going to become more prominent of a strategy again - particularly after the Eldrazi rotate out.

Still, excited to see how it will work out, especially with Jace's Erasure getting reprinted and the new Jace's Archivist. Sad to see this one rotate out though. Although I suppose if we keep seeing things like Halimar Depths in the future, his +1 could be pretty comboable, letting you draw the best card of the three and discard the worst. And allegedly, Innistrad is supposed to have a lot of graveyard-based mechanics, so perhaps milling yourself will end up being commonplace. Guess we'll have to wait and find out how it will work in its context (WotC has only spoiled 21 blue cards from M12 as of this posting).

5 CMC though. And really heavily focused on one strategy in place of the general versatility of JMS and the straight draw engine of Baby Jace. Sadface. But optimistic sadface.

@marwinshieldscale:

An interesting thing to note was that when they released the visual spoiler, the only planeswalkers shown were Gideon Jura and Sorin Markov. No red, green, or blue planeswalker. Upon seeing this, I automatically thought, "Now why would they show two and not all five?" I figured that they had new planeswalkers for the other colors. So far, I've been right. I'm hoping for a new Chandra and Garruk, but we'll just have to wait and see. They release new cards every day now, so keep checking back and maybe we'll get new planeswalkers to go along with our memory adept.

EDIT

We now know that there are new Garruks and Chandras, Primal Hunter and the Firebrand, respectively.

I think this really benefits from Rooftop Storm. If you get two or more Beleren's out and every zombie you draw costs nothing...that is a serious advantage. Undead Alchemist makes that combo even deadlier, and then use the ultimate to get more Zombies. Throw in Lich Lord of Unx, Jace's Erasure, and some other cards and you've got a pretty decent zombie swarm mill deck.

Quite a draw engine. Worst case scenario, this is a little more expensive Howling Mine. Best case, it's Phyrexian Arena for 3 turns with no drawback.

This guy curves perfectly into Notion Thief for a pretty sick card draw combo. You draw 2 or more cards a turn and Jace gets so pumped that even if they take out the Thief you should be able to use Jace's second ability for the rest of the game. And that's ignoring the fact that it cancels out all your opponents' draw cards and engines. One player's Phyrexian Arena becomes a steady death sentence while you get to profit off of it.
