limited filler. as mentioned, in constructed play there are better alternatives. honestly, it could cost R or at least include 'it cannot be regenerated' in the text.

If that's a Mindslaver, Shatter would kill the player wearing it as well!

This is a big card in limited. In an artifact heavy set, draft this as you would Doom Blade in core set.

On constructed: If you're running red artifact hate, I think you'll reach for Manic Vandal or Oxidda Scrapmelter.
On limited: Wow. Some people really don't get it. Shatter has never been good in a vacuum, and never will. The whole point in reprinting it (both in Scars and the original Mirrodin set) was allowing it and its simple design to shine. And boy, does it shine. This is an easily first-pickable card in draft, no questions asked.

During the prerelease I had the enormous pleasure of using this card on my opponent's Steel Hellkite as soon as he declared it as an attacker three games in a row. A+ in my book.
@Dont - HELP. I have a huge problem. I read your comment and was like WOW that guy is so smart, but the DOUCHEBAGS that were running the prerelease wouldn't let me play my Ancient Grudge NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I TOLD THEM IT WAS BETTER. WHAT DO I DO?

@Ceremonial:
Play it anyway, and if you win, lol in their faces until they doom blade you. Or, read my post on dancing scimitar for a nice list of weapons you can use if they actually DO get hold of doom blades.
Good, but Revoke Existence is much better, especially with all those battle cry decks going around. That said, I run one in my deck and one in my sideboard, with 4 Revoke Existences in my deck.
People who are saying Shattering Spree is strictly better than this:
INSTANT =/= SORCERY

Still waiting for a Shatter for R. Been waiting since Seventh Edition.

I would have to agree with Condor_96. Please stop claiming cards are strictly better or worse than other cards when it just isn't true. I agree that Shattering Spree is a better overall card, but claiming it is strictly better just shows you to be an inexperienced player. One extra mana for the speed increase may be worth it in some decks. You could claim this card is strictly worse than Shattering Pulse, and that would be a better argument, since Shattering Pulse does everything this does at the same speed and cost, but with buyback potential. Of course, Shattering Pulse hasn't been playable in most tournaments for a long time, so even then the "strictly worse" argument is somewhat flawed.
Add a liquimetal coating and you've got a two mana spell that can destroy even planeswalkers. Add it to land destruction and you can lock down a players mana while you build larger and larger with manic vandal, oxxida scrapmelter, and finally hoardsmelter dragon.

Hey.
Y'know what Shattering Spree isn't?
An instant. So for crying out loud stop using the word "strictly".
Is Shattering Spree BETTER? Yes. But it's not strictly better.

I admit many many cards are better but this is a classic and is standard legal, and very well may be again after it rotates out. still good just not that good. EDIT: as of now shatter is now strictly worse than ancient grudge
Never want to see you again! Game has evolved since 1993 and you are not welcome.
@saltient Hilarious comment. But I prefer amy webbers version to this.

@TheMurderousKitten : Yes, but Smelt is strictly better in all way, even the speed.
Oh sh*t no, it can be countered by Mental Misstep.

Great card in its time. Unfortunately that time is over, but I'm giving this a 4/5 for still being an MVP in Limited. Ancient Grudge and Smelt are strictly better alternatives, both of which are in Standard at least for the next six months.
Shatter might be the magic card with the highest number of strictly better cards. I'm investigating Shock and Grizzly Bear (probably the card with the most functional reprints too) right now too.

How dumb can people be? how do you not realize that t his card is basically doom blade in this block? sure, there are better constructed cards, but in draft this thing is easily first or second pick material.

"Okay, but let's give it the most badass art it's ever seen print in." <-- GIVE THIS PERSON A RAISE
"And let's go all-out with the flavor text." <-- GIVE THIS PERSON A COOKIE
... later ...
"Nice art. Vibrant. Evocative. Good call, asking jD for a mock-up." <-- RAISE: EARNED
"I like the creation of this Krol character -- clever goblins are always welcome." <-- COOKIE: EARNED
"This is stuuupid. What's a furnace-priest?" <-- YOU SHOULD HAVE FIRED THIS PERSON WHEN I TOLD YOU TO

However, Krol sounds like a badass, he should be a separate card.
