I'm always very hesitant to play good black creatures that have "when this creature enters the battlefield, you lose x life" or any other pain cards, but not anymore. With this guy in a black or red deck you dont have to worry about taking damage yourself, sucks that it's vulnerable to destroy creature and destroy artifact, but still looks like a mighty fine card to me

Okay, it's now official. "Platinum" has become synonymous with "KILLITKILLITKILLIT!"

Excellent card, though, and it'll make a number of cards that once were harmful to their user much more playable.

I personally like this a lot better than Platinum Angel. I think the one-mana difference in cost and loss of flying is worth an extra +4/+4 and an overall better ability. With the Angel in play, you just don't block and 'die'. This guy...does things a little differently.

Also, Wizards...well done for making a mythic that actually feels mythic.

It's safer than Platinum Angel. The Angel can stop you from losing, but when you're in negative life, all the opponent needs to do to kill you is nuke the Angel. The Emperion, however, puts your life total into stasis. When the Emperion is killed, your life total is still where it was when it entered play. It's also much larger and can hit for more damage, minus evasion. People complain about poison, but this has applications outside of the set.

This card is very useful, a friend of mine runs a life gain deck that is incredibly efficient. All I have to do is play my artifact deck, play magister sphinx, this guy, and toss him at my opposition, and just wait and see his reaction to no more life gain for you.

Another example of a card where you want to grab the designer by the neck and shake him.

RE: "If your opponent has no removal or alternate win conditions. You win the game."

I guess my feeling is that if your opponent builds a deck that has no removal or alternate win conditions and you aren't dead by the time you play this...you probably didn't need to play this anyway. And if you *need* this to win the game against such a deck...it's probably wise you not play with lighters or sharp objects.

It should read: "Tap 8 lands you control and two lands target opponent controls, discard Platinum Emperion from your hand: target opponent discards a card. Play this ability only as a stupidity."

I'll enjoy seeing my opponents play this. Just for the expression on their faces when they find out that the end result is they tapped 8 lands and we each discarded a card.

This was used against me with Asceticism on the field. I had four mountains, Koth's emblem, and my opponent was at 4 life. You can imagine how ***ed I was when he got this down, and it was untargetable. Still, if you can ramp into it, it's definitely a great combo.

Oddly, I think Platinum Angel would be more relevant in this set, thanks to poison.

Still a really cool card, though. I wonder if we'll see more platinum creatures in the rest of the block.

@Lord_Gravesmythe: wow...you basically elaborated a "Dies to removal 1/5" comment and if you're playing against people who play things like these and don't expect removal, you might need to change playgroups

This guy was meant to be in alternate win condition decks, as it gives you time to focus on your win condition without worrying about damage to you. Also have people not heard of cards like Canopy Cover or Turn to Mist?

I like this card much better than the Mox that everybody is all pumped up about from this set. Stick an enchantment on this bad boy that makes it so that he can't be the target of spells and play with a blue counterspell deck and this guy becomes very hard to get rid of.

This. lady's and gentlemen, is the honest to goodness flagship Mythic of the set. This is what should be by the definition of a Mythic Rare. It represents the set, leaves an impression, but isn't necessary for tournament play and it isn't an automatic inclusion in decks.

It also tag teams nicely with Platinum Angel. She's one of the few forces that can stop poison counters from killing you, but lets you drop to negative life. This big o'le loveable guy braces you against the most savage facebeatings so you can still live if someone nixes him, but he's hopeless against Infect in general. The Platinums make a cute couple. :P

If I Have Platinum Emperium In Play Can I Cast Spells And Activate Abilities That Cost A Payment Of Life? Does This Card Prevent Me From Making That Payment And Therefore Exclude My Options? Or Is That Payment Instead Now 0?
C4rl0wn463
★★★★☆ (4.8/5.0) (3 votes)
@ Audhi5000: Read the reminder text: ''You can't pay any amount of life, except 0.'' ;)

Anyway: Awesome card, all I can say. Well, I can of course say that it has the 'weakness' that it can be destroyed. But that's -AS ALWAYS- a weak argument. Once again I shall have to explain: Compare it to other creatures. It's about the time it isn't destroyed. Yes, it is unfortunate if your opponent destroys it... But as long as you still have it, it is BADASS.

I still think I prefer the Angel. There's enough alternate win cons that don't involve your life total that the Angel protects against more. Still, this guy's no slouch, and the art for him looks completely awesome, too.

place leyline, use spirit guide and lotus petal to channel, get the 19 colorless mana, sac lotus for 3 white to play near death experience, then play platinum emperion. I'm winning before I even make a draw :P

It's a good thing that the Emperion has no evasion abilities or it would be stupidly overpowered. I like this card a lot, but, as another very powerful artifact, it makes me look upon Darksteel Forge with even more disbelief. I simply can't understand how anyone at Wizards could think that designing a card like that would be a good idea. We're still waiting for "all enchantments you control are indestructible/have shroud". At least Sterling Grove has the decency to exclude itself.

But I digress.

This card doesn't have to guard you for the whole game. It's better to have it for a few late-game turns in case, say, you're playing Bitterblossom, things just aren't going your way, and you suddenly realize that losing 1 life each turn could cost you the game. Platinum Emperion will buy you extra time, but don't be too incensed when it dies. It's a huge target, and as an artifact creature, every colour has an easy way of destroying, exiling or gaining control of it. As for its gigantic body, I'm not quite sure how relevant that is, since its effect means that you don't need to block and attacking with it makes it vulnerable to all kinds of combat tricks. I would say don't attack with it unless you're swinging for the win.

In summary, I'd say that it will definitely help you win, but it won't win games on its own.

I find it funny that people call a "weakness" the fact that it can be destroyed... of course it can! How is that a disadvantage on a card like this? The vast majority of creatures (except for a handful) may be destroyed. This is the way the game works. This is a great creature, not too strong nor too weak for it's cost.

@Wormfang
Not to burst your bubble, but placing quiet disrepair on him would simply allow you to destroy him during your upkeep. Since your life total can't change, you'll simply stay at your current life total.

As for cost for cards relevant to power and toughness/effects, an 8/8 for 8 colorless is already pretty awesome, his effect's really useful if you have a method of dealing with poison counters. Not that that's always relevant. Destruction is unfortunate, but it's the reason they have so many cards, like turn aside and withstand death to help save him. heck, you could use not of this world. But i digress... the main point was to note that it's generally the x/x for x>1 colorless creatures without drawbacks that make some savage creatures.

See: Cathodion, Su-chi, Wurmcoil Engine, and Darksteel Colossus

The textbook definition of the perfect Mythic Rare. A crazy ability that makes Timmy wet himself and Johnny brainstorm with infinite glee, but isn't broken, with a power/toughness ratio that is acceptable to its cost. Combine this with Platinum Angel, Mycosynth Lattice, and Darksteel Forge.
Your life total can't change, you can't lose the game, all permanents are artifacts, and all artifacts are indestructable. It's a (near) perfect defense. The primary downside would be -1/-1 counters.
Toss in a Mirrorworks and you can double each card quickly for a better defense.

★★☆☆☆ (2.5/5.0) (3 votes)
"Sooo. . . technically this makes Necropotence unplayable and Oath of Lim-Dûl playable. Crazy, huh?"

You just end up sacrificing this guy under Oath of Lim-Dul, along with all your other permanents; It doesn't prevent damage.

@ Leshrac: That is totally counterintuitive, though I see from the oracle rulings on Platinum Emperion it's also correct.
Leshrac_Nightwalker
★★★★★ (5.0/5.0) (3 votes)
@scumbling1: You're right about it not preventing damage, but I think you need to take another look at Oath of Lim-Dûl. The enchantment's Oracle text only says:

Whenever you lose life, for each 1 life you lost, sacrifice a permanent other than Oath of Lim-Dûl unless you discard a card. (Damage dealt to you causes you to lose life.)

BlackBlack: Draw a card.

With a Platinum Emperion on the field, the reminder text in Oath actually doesn't apply any more; damage dealt to you won't cause you to lose any life. DacenOctavio is correct.

EDIT: @scumbling1: It's certainly counterintuitive according to the cards-as-printed, which is what I assume you must mean. That's a mild sore point I have about some oracle updates; I certainly do appreciate that WotC provides us with more modern templating of certain cards, but Oath of Lim-Dûl made sense as printed; what they've "oracled" it to seems like a functional upgrade. I don't understand why they would make a change like that to a card that they are probably not planning to reprint.

Anyway, counterintuitive or not, it is an interesting interaction!

Being an 8/8 for 8 is about the only thing this has going for it. It's not good against infect and it makes it so that you can't pay life for Phyrexian mana.
Sironos
★★★★☆ (4.9/5.0) (8 votes)
It neither ignores death nor entropy, it dies to destroy and it can get -1/-1 counters, very unprecise flavour text.
Other than that, I like it. A mythic that feels epic, but is not for tournament play, as it should be. I'm so tired of overpowered undercosted mythics at 60 dollars. This creature is the way it should be.

I think this is better then Platinum Angel. Why? Well with this out they have to deal with it to damage you. With the angel they can simply ignore its even there until they are about to win. This guy is like a 24-7 fog for everything, while the angel is like a false sense of security.

Yeah, the angel can save you from other win conditions, but you dont see those in every game. 9 out of 10 games players win with damage.

I definitely think this is the stronger of the two Platinum creatures. With the larger body, it can play the role as a threat in addition to its powerful ability. It's very difficult to burn, usually needing three burn spells, and almost certainly two. Any deck that runs Spellskite as additional protection will probably find Emperion's ability almost strictly better since Spellskite can shut down the pump used in most fast infect decks.

Removal doesn't necessarily have to mean the death of something and when it comes to machines like this guy, I don't see him as being something that can actually "die". If a card says destroy target creature then he'll be destroyed but as a pretty intense piece of hardware, being destroyed is no biggie. Who cares if his busted up, dismantled body is hurled into a pit of corpses (graveyard). He can come back easily enough.

I'd say the flavour text is actually very precise. It's not like they wrote it that way and meant "Oh, this guy is so badass he doesn't die" because we all know that it's very easy for him to die but I think it's written the way it is to more or less just say that Platinum Emperion is one of those huge, slow-moving beasts that just lumbers his way across the battlefield not being concerned whether something(s) is trying to stop him or not. If you're programmed to take orders and assault a target then chances are you're just going to keep working away at that objective until you either accomplish it or cease to read data. So in that sense, he totally ignores death and entropy. That's my take anyway.

Things make a lot more sense when you don't just view the cards as cards with an image and text. I think about what the card is really representing and what it would be like or do in an actual situation.

Either way, I love this card. Have had some really stellar plays with this guy.
The artwork is so great. It would be neat for Chris Rahn to do panoramic images. Cards like Platinum Emperion, Blightsteel Colossus and Steel Overseer would be interesting.

Also, I think Blightsteel Colossus came from a Platinum Emperion that was contaminated by Phyrexian oil. It's a neat thought anyway.

Cheers
