Black border, modern frame. I'll take a playset.

Resolving this on turn two may be the strongest play in Modern.

Blood Moon changes the way non-basic lands exist ON the battlefield, but do not change the way they enter the battlefield. Because checklands, shock lands, and gates are not effected by continuous effects on the battlefield while the land is being played, it will hit the board tapped (Or with the Pay-2-life replacement effect). See: Rule 614.12

Now all we need is a black-bordered, modern-framed version of this with the original art from The Dark.

I expect this is the first card in this set (alphabetically) to strongly affect the secondary market in a mostly irreversible way.

Now we have a lot more black-bordered Foils of Blood Moon, AND a LOT more Black Borders of it in general. This is not something that is very relevant for most of the cards in this set. This card is only Modern Legal because of a white-bordered Core Set printing. And it's a Rare. A Good Rare.

That...changes things. For the better, I'm sure. :)

Skyknightxi: I honestly like this art better. They are after all very similar. The old art works better on the old frame, the new art works better on the new frame, firstly. Secondly, this is Glowing Red, the other Moon was very Rocky. I do like Classy looking D-n-Dish art (as in, more Old D&D-looking than New WoW-looking), but sometimes I think there's something to be said for the WoW-take on an art.

The one red card Commanders fear most...

The blood moon rises.

I like how they reprinted both Inkmoth Nexus and the means to deal with it.

So I heard you're playing a 3-coloured Jund deck with 10 fetchlands and 10 shocklands.

Would be a shame if...

you weren't able to help Tarmogoyf.

This might as well say, "Destroy each multicolored player." This card is to multicolored decks as Iona, Shield of Emeria is to monocolored decks, but at 3 mana instead of 9. What makes matters worse is that it makes all your nonbasics give red mana, a color famous for not being able to deal with enchantments. It's a very powerful card, but kills the fun out of the game when it actually is effective.

@Wallinator: I agree! I play Esper in EDH and I can't think of a better hoser. Dread this hitting the table. You know you're in trouble in EDH when you're praying to topdeck a basic land.

I'm one of the only people that play modern mono red goblins in the shop I go to. This thing just shuts down most of the decks there. It feels so unfair sometimes to resolve this thing on turn 3 or sooner and just watch the other person sit there and play non-basic mountains for the rest of the game. That being said, my only gripe is that it also turns my teetering peaks into basic mountains.

this is just an awesome card all around... too bad most of my friends only use mono-colored decks with only basic lands :(

Nice 1-card answer to this 1-card lock : Chromatic Lantern
The casting cost of the lantern is colorless and you regain some tempo with the extra mana.

There are a variety of decks in Legacy that spam Moon effects but become quite unreliable due to the acceleration involved. That said, I quite like the idea posted to put it into a Goblin deck. I'd have to try it out but they not only like accel (which could be used instead of Lackey) but they get a lot of natural card advantage.

Goblins tend to be good at beating other mono-color decks either because they're blue (Piledriver) or because of nasty kill cards like Incinerator while getting actual card advantage unlike D&T.

My favorite card in Magic. The existence of this card has a very positive effect on the metagame in the eternal formats because it makes deckbuilders have to balance the inclusion of basic and non-basic lands in the mana base. Otherwise, there wouldn't be as much incentive to play one or two-colored decks with all the mana-fixing available in those formats.

@DarthParallax: Could have sworn all tournament-legal foils were black-bordered, even the core set ones.

I already know that it does, but I still can't wrap my head around how this affects Madblind Mountain, a nonbasic land that already is a Mountain.

@The_Trendkill: Even if it's not, it's more than worth playing a full set of Spirit Guides

When I first saw this card, I didn't realize that it got rid of the abilities of the lands. That function of Blood Moon is REALLY unintuitive. Why does simply giving a land the Mountain subtype make the land lose all of its abilities other than tapping for red mana? I mean, Dralnu's Crusade doesn't Goblins lose their abilities, so why should this?

@OlvynChuru The key phrase that differentiates Dralnu's Crusade from this is the "in addition to its other types" phrase. If Blood Moon also had a similar phrase, it would've let nonbasic lands keep their original types. As is, it literally turns all nonbasic lands into mountains.
See Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth for an effect closer to what you were expecting.

All nonbasic lands are . . . . islands?
