This is my favorite card. It is, however, not a good card for constructed. Really fun though. I hope it gets reprinted.

a really cool effect in my opinion, and certainly interesting for some combos, or at least good synergies.
you could for example try to get multiple instances of this card on your side, and/or use this along with cards that give your opponents (little) creatures to negate the drawback, especially if you give your cats trample and/or lifelink.
having an option to sacrifice the tokens for some profit will be useful as well.

Awsome card, I have a deck with Silent Arbiter and this guy and Goblin Wardrums.

Lure is not a good card to give him due to the fact that he can only be blocked by one creature. So the others woud be free to block anyone they wanted to.

It's very, very pricey to pull off, but I think Relentless Assault is the way forward with this card. Since all the tokens are copies of Nacatl War Pride, THEY get the same abilities, so if you attack twice in one turn....

Follow up with Phyrexian Altar for the tokens and Disintegrate for your opponent, just in case there's anything left of them after the attack. Beautiful.

@ Dingo777, if they were going to be reprinted, it'd have been in Alara block, since the Nacatl are natives of Jund.

Great creature, a bomb in limited which at uncommon you can get in multiples, and I like it a lot in casual play too. It satisfies me as a Johnny, while remaining a decent attacker which promotes interaction.

favorite card ever, it needs to be reprinted in zendikar, NEEDS TO BE

awesome combos possible, like mirrorweaving it into a deus of calamity yes my 7 nactals are now 6/6 tramplers, and unless your opponent can block multiple creatures like thoughtwelf trio, one will always hit

Edit: well WotC, you crushed my dreams, but you gave me some hope for world wake, reprint this in standard, and watch as it is hit with rites of replication, kicked, yes I have 6 of these swinging together, you have how many creatures, 3, oh good, I now have 24 of these guys, beastmaster assention loves this guy, as long as your opponent has 6 creatures, you just swung with 7, and they are now 8/8 enjoy the carnage

Edit: Edit: yeah, alara would have seen this, but that didnt mean that zendikar didnt have cat people. None appeared though. There is still eldrazi and whatever the block is after zen, so we may still see a nactal war-pride activate a beastmaster ascention

Nope, playing a giant growth or aura won't help. Same as if you play a clone, the clone won't copy auras or temporarys buffs either. What you can do however is cytoshape the war-pride, after the trigger goes on the stack, before it resolves. Then each token will be a copy of what you cytoshaped the war-pride into.

Now we know that they plan on returning to Alara post Bolas, which is pretty cool. I was going to be surprised if they actually did put this in one of those sets, since it would just feel awkward, like some of the other future-shift cards have been. It'd be nice for them to revisit the plan someday, but not soon i bet.

Is this Card for real?
An uncommon with this power?
Channel Shinen of Life's Roar onto Sylvan Basilisk just before you attack with this card to end your opponents game.

and in case you're wondering, casting Giant Growth will affect all of the copies of Nacatl War-Pride, as supported by rule 706.4. which is specific in mentioning Giant Growth as an example. A ssuming, of course, that you cast it in your main phase, as opposed to your combat phase, as otherwise, the tokens would be 3/3 and Nacatl War-Pride would be 6/6

however, with Spirit Link rule 706.2 states that it is only the creature that is copied, not the effects from another card, unless it causes a change to power/toughness.

Some amount of strategy should go into this since it is very likely the original will get blocked with the biggest defending creature. However, if you get to attack on the following turn, it is often disappointing because you are getting fewer tokens that time around.
The thing many people don't realize until they have used it is that if all the tokens go in the direction of the original, then you have one more cat than your opponent has creatures. How has no one mentioned Might of the Masses yet? It can save the original, but better yet, whichever token gets through is huge.
This can also be brutal in multiplayer since you attack the person with the most creatures and then send the tokens in all directions to lay waste to the entire plane.

Also, combo with Garruk's Packleader for a freakton of cards.

Yes, this would be pretty brutal with Raksha. I plan on using it in my Rhys the Redeemed EDH deck, since I'm pretty sure the copies will stay, but I'm not sure about Doubling Season. It's not making copies of the tokens, it's just doubling the tokens from the original source. Wouldn't the exile still apply then?

this card seems complex but it's not. just cast Indestructibility on the original (or anything else that protects a creature) and you're good to go. then you can have your other creatures rape your opponent unharmed for the rest of the game.

@GrimjawxRULES: You said it yourself, the tokens copy the ORIGINAL creature. When a creature has an ability that says it's name then you should read it as "This card". This card is a 3/3 creature that must be blocked by one creature if able and creates tokens of itself when it attacks. Temporary buffs like Giant Growth and abilities given to this creature do not change anything about this card and will not transfer over to the copies. The tokens will be 3/3 creatures that must be blocked by one creature if able ability and have the copy ability. (As for Spideredd quoting rule 706.4, that rule says that the Giant Growth is played on the creature doing the copying not the creature that is being copied, 706.2 is the rule that is in effect here.)

Sundial of the Infinite.

Attack, get a bunch of copies in play. Any of the tokens that survive combat will put a triggered ability on the stack at the beginning of the end of turn step.

Activate the Sundial of the Infinite in response to the triggered abilities, causing them to be removed from the stack.

The tokens survive the turn, to make more of themselves next turn, and further turns.

@littlebeast

Actually, extra combat phases will do almost nothing for this guy. If you look closely, you'll see that the tokens he produces in the first combat phase don't have haste, so they won't be able to attack on the second combat phase. The only thing you get with a second combat phase is a chance to make more copies with the original, unless you have some way to give your stuff haste (I'm looking at you, Urabrask).

I wonder why they didn't reprint this card at some point in the Alara block. I mean, Naya is obviously where it's "futureshifted" from.

I wish they'd reprint more futureshifted cards in general, instead of just letting all these cool and wacky concepts fall to the wayside. (Except Tarmogoyf, of course. Don't reprint Tarmogoyf, Wizards. Ever.)

An extremely fun "Johnny" card that demands to be built around. By itself, the War-Pride is a little weak for the mana; it will probably take out a utility creature or two with it's first swing, while getting annihilated by an opponent's larger creature. But adding a few support cards makes it absurd.

I hadn't thought of Pandemonium and Garruk's Packleader before reading this thread, and they're even better than what I had in mind. Goblin War Drums, Bedlam, Vigor, and/or Door of Destinies were some of my own ideas (with Forbidden Orchard to get a few extra tokens). Whichever path you take, the War-Pride can create a huge effect with a single swing.

Champion of Lambholt
Opponent has, let's say, 4 creatures. They're 5/5s. Swing with Nacatl War-Pride and the champion (who already has +1/+1 from the original Necatl War-Pride).
4 copies of Necatl War-Pride come into play, so Champion gets 4 +1/+1 counters, meaning the 5/5s can't block your 5 Necatl War-Prides or the 6/6 Champion.

@Keegan, got to add one more...
This, breath of fury, Emblem of the Warmind, and nfiltrator's Magemark that way, the token that gets enchanted with breath is almost unblockable.
Though in a 1v1 i doubt you would need a third combat phase.

Where this combo would get fun is in multiplayer... swing at the person with the most creatures, he would most likely survive, then move on to each other player before coming back to attack him... watch his face.

The only thing missing from this is the ability to choose which creature blocks which Nacatl, since of course your opponent will always block the original in priority and kill it, so he won't get off any more than one attack.

Pigglebee
★★★★☆ (4.0/5.0) (2 votes)
@xytor. I think they will stick around. Its ability creates a delayed triggered ability which triggers at the beginning of the next end step. Once the ability has triggered once, it will never trigger again, because as far as the game is concerned, it's done what it's supposed to do.

Ugh. so many triggers in one sentence...

Nacatl War-Pride is one of the coolest cards in Magic: The Gathering, in my opinion. Everything about it makes it interesting as opposed to just bluntly powerful. A high mana cost and low power/toughness are offset by a blocker restriction that makes defending against it tricky and a massive self-cloning trigger that seems capable of ending games. The question is how to make that happen, and the War-Pride does a fantastic job balancing that potential for abuse with its overall power level (>9000 if your opponent has at least 3000 creatures).

I second the wonderful suggestions to use this with Champion of Lambholt, Sundial of the Infinite, and/or Parallel Lives.

Although Champion of Lambholt is probably the coolest suggestion for unblockability (and Bellowing Tanglewurm is pretty sweet too), Bedlam and Falter are also good options, especially with them being less vulnerable to typical removal. They're red, though. You could also combo Yavimaya Dryad and Lumbering Satyr, with the advantage being that it's respectably ridiculous.

I also agree that Cytoshape (in response to the token-creating triggered ability) would be amusing. I’d Cytoshape the War-Pride into a Craterhoof Behemoth.

Speaking of making copies of the wrong thing, has anyone else thought about following this with Essence of the Wild? Not that it's that great, since they still don't have any sort of evasion, but comboing two cards with the same unusual mana cost does amuse me. Hey, and Vigor would stop the original War-Pride from getting killed in combat...

Also, I'd love to play Nacatl War-Pride with a few Renegade Doppelgangers and Clones thereof. Heat Shimmer would also work, I guess, but it'll only last a turn. Really, I just want to attack with multiple Nacatl War-Prides at once, ideally before my opponent has a chance to figure out what I'm up to. Like by using Dual Nature/Wild Pair and Concordant Crossroads...or by using Mirrorweave with mana dorks and weenies aplenty. And for multi-turn overkill, there's always Infinite Reflection. Even a measly 2 vs. 3 matchup sends at least 15 damage through, and if you used Mirrorweave, all blocks will be lethal to everything involved...unless you happen to have Leyline of Vitality or some other toughness-booster. Cool story bro.

While we're overkilling, we might as well run Coat of Arms. It's actually pretty good with Nacatl War-Pride on its own. If your opponent is playing tribal, it'll almost even out, but if they aren't playing tribal and you have some way of forcing the combat damage through, it'll be devastating. Too bad green is so bad at giving all its creatures trample.

One problem with Nacatl War-Pride though is that it doesn't really do its thing all that well if your opponent doesn't have enough creatures. Hunted Troll seems like the simplest way to fix that problem, but the more devious option is Natural Affinity/Living Plane. If you go down that road, consider Veteran Explorer, Collective Voyage/New Frontiers. If you want to send damage through, you could use Mana Web to try to keep them tapped down.

Another problem is how the original War-Pride will likely end up dead, meaning its first attack will be its last. Unblockability, at least for the original, is probably the best solution, but Lifeline will also probably work, since you will always be attacking with at least one more attacker than they have blockers, meaning that at least one will probably survive combat, which gives it a chance to make it to the end of the turn and revive all dead creatures (including your opponent's too, which is unfortunate unless you want them to have larger numbers of creatures for some reason). Any card with the "Populate" mechanic - especially Rootborn Defenses - is another option, since Populate can create a token Nacatl War-Pride that won't be exiled with the other tokens and won't be in combat. Trostani, Selesnya's Voice seems good too, due to the massive, massive life gain.

Overall, though, it's a fun, interesting card that inspires people to find ways to tap its hidden potential. The Time Spiral Block was a gold mine of creative card design like this, and I'm sad the developers didn't see fit to bring this chunk of pure gold back for the Alara Block.

Guys, read the rulings on sundial. "at the beggining of the next end step" triggers will trigger on the next end step, whosever's it is and however many turns have passed edgewise. You will get to keep your tapped cats for your opponents turn, then at that turn's end step, they will be exiled.

★★★★★ (5.0/5.0) (3 votes)
Sundial DOES work. If you use it correctly. "At the beginning of the next end step" is a delayed trigger that will only happen once. If you wait until your end step, the exile trigger for each token goes on the stack. Trigger on stack, off goes sundial. Ends turn, exiling all triggers. Creatures stay.

in addition to the Champion of lambholt drop a Cathars' Crusade your 4 creatured opponent suddenly has to face down a 11/11 champion + 5 7/7 kitties unless they have 4 eldrazi/colossi they are doomed.

Also Aurelia would be really really evil as each copy would on the second attack make their own set of copies.

1st attack gives + 4 Tokens, next attack gives +4 tokens PER CAT giving you another 20 meaning your second attack gives 25 cats attacking for a (measly) 75 power.

Incredible Johnny card. At worst, as long as you can keep the main one alive it makes all of your other creatures unblockable unless your opponent has a Palace Guard effect. At best, you sacrifice the tokens to Greater Good and loot a ton of cards or use Warstorm Surge to kill anything that could block and kill the original, weaken anything that would survive them, etc. You can also use Overrun effects and just do a ton of damage to a deck with lots of low toughness creatures (cough cough token decks cough cough). There are tons of possibilities.

-In a cat deck i protected him with Shield of the Oversoul (most of my cats were WG)
-in a ramp deck he let my fat get through,
-in a flicker deck I saved him if he was blocked
-next to fires of yavimaya you can leave yourself open, fog, then drop this for lethal damage (their blockers will be tapped.)

Honestly... you don't even need the Blade of the Bloodchief. Ironically it's not even for the Vampire, it's to keep your original Nactyl War-Pride alive. Unless putting it on the vampire lets you swing for the win.

Sundial of the Infinite

Swing. Make your tokens. At the start of your end step, after the exile triggers go on the stack, use the Sundial. Your tokens get to stay.

The beauty of this? The next time you swing with all of them, THEY ALL MAKE TOKENS. Every one of them is a copy of this card, therefore they all make copies of themselves, tapped and attacking. This gets out of hand very quickly (or the game is over, one of the two).
