First Strike and Infect is such a great combo. Add on being a major pain to remove thanks to his protection and black not killing black and you have one amazing card.

Auto-include in any infect deck playing black. That many efficient abilities on a bear with no drawback for 3 CMC is just wonderful. And as a bonus the art is pretty awesome as well.

Remember: It puts the -1/-1 counters on its adversary before that adversary hurts it back. So if the first strike damage doesn't kill, it'll cripple. This Crusader will survive a battle with a */2 or any 3/3.

WOW! This card is even better than its white counterpart, Mirran Crusader! Mainly because it has infect in addition to its other three abilities. Plus the fact that it's not susceptible to Lightning Bolt. I might just have to add this to my White-Black Knight Deck! In fact, this card and Mirran Crusader are the perfect start to a White-Black Knight Deck! :)

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Doesn't die to most of the "usual" removal, true, but there are plenty of ways to deal with it.

White has Day of Judgment and Dispense Justice.
Red is mostly out of options unless they grab some artifact support. Pyroclasm does not kill this, since protection prevents damage among other things. The best answer mono-red can do is Leyline of Punishment combined with non-targeting damage from something like Pyroclasm, Slagstorm, or Chain Reaction.
Blue has its full range of lockdown/control change options available.
Green has Hornet Sting if you have two, but otherwise needs support effects like Liquimetal Coating or Flight Spellbomb to be able to use removal spells on it. Or it can do what green does best and force it into combat with a fatty.
Black has lots of options if you ignore Doom Blade for a moment. Offhand, there's Go for the Throat, Grasp of Darkness, Disfigure, Last Kiss, Feast of Blood, Consume the Meek, Black Sun's Zenith, Massacre Wurm, Spread the Sickness, Flesh Allergy, and Skinrender, plus various sacrifice effects. (I'm sure I'm missing some.)

Any color can run Blazing Torch, Perilous Myr, Argentum Armor, Brittle Effigy, or Lux Cannon, to name a few.

Give this guy anything that boosts his power and he is going to wreck face.

Unfortunately he still takes one in the face from Valakut,

And don't forget you can proliferate after first strike damage is dealt but before regular damage to increase his survivability by just that little extra bit your opponent may not have thought about.

I realllly wish I could run him in my Zombie deck, since I could easily drag him up to 5 power (Undead Warchief, Death Baron, Lord of the Undead and Cemetery Reaper all make appearances, and all but Cemetery more than 1) and First Strike, Death Touch with Death Baron is just silly. But at the end of the day, it's better to not split your damage. So, into my Infect deck you go.

As many have already pointed out, this great is very strong and useful in any Infect, sometimes in non-Infect decks.
Aside from that, has anybody who is familiar with the game noticed that the art very closely resembles the way Nightmare from Soul Calibur IV looks?
Hell, even the stance is almost, if not exactly identical (sometimes Nightmare raises his sword just like the Phyrexian Crusader).
Looks like Eric Deschamps was inspired by the game, heh.

Extra points for pilots who combo Phyrexian Crusader + Claws of Valakut and Fulgore victory dance everytime you send him to the Red. =D

Badass Zombie? - Yes... buuuuuuut...

Infect makes the card to narrow in scope... badass zombies are great but why play zombies if you can't actually play them in zombie decks - or maybe I'm just being oldschool =P.
Gimme a ton of powerhouse zombie cards all with infect in the near future and I'll reconsider =P

Unless of course the oracle text on all zombie creature type cards will be changed to give them infect due to their "zombiness." (please? ><)

^--------- Great idea for future zombies at the very least - and flavorful! Every zombie printed from now on has infect, deal?

Also remember that this guy would take up a 3-drop slot and that the 3-drop slot in zombie tribal is more than full already. Besides - doing regular combat damage AND infect is just silly - pick one or the other. I know this card is exciting but common.

Awesome card regardless, very scary and powerful. I'll never get tired of dropping him onto the board due to sheer awesomeness.

Eh! Where is the love for this card? All I see is how we can kill this guy.

Phyrexian crusader reminds me of a mini Akroma (I remember black and red was the removal colors, now white and red with black somewhere close by).

So, I shall attach Sword of Vengeance on to this guy and have my lil neo-akroma in my grixis triple threat deck:

Mill: Hedron crab + fetches + Wind Zendikon + Bloodchief Ascension

(enchant fetch with zendikon, block, sac and get 3 more land drops. also the zendikon helps with getting counter on bloodchief.)

Damage: creatures + blightning + active ascension + mill

Poison counters: Phyrexian crusader + Sword of Vengeance

note that bloodchief ascension keeps hedron crab a good draw from a dead draw when you are mid - late game

@MyrBattlecube - It still falls to Pyroclasm because protection only protects it from being targeted by spells or abilities of the closen type or color. Pyroclasm doesn't target, it hits everything on the board.

He doesn't really need a sword and most decks you would use him in, equipment would really just slow the deck down. He mostly serves as an all purpose attacker and defender while you have guys like Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas buffing things like Inkmoth Nexus and Vault Skirge, or other creatures with evasion for your primary attacking force.

@Kitty the Kat. fyi 'protection' WOULD keep Phyrexian Crusader alive thru a pyroclasm... (???) no, it doesn't "target", but it DOES deal damage...which is prevented. Unlike Wrath of God vs. Black Knight... At any rate, I'd rather seen him w 'wither' honestly... Still a house in the proper deck.

@Guest934104240, He wants it to have wither because wither synergizes with non infect creatures better than infect does. If this guy is your only infect source you need to swing in unblocked five times to be lethal. On the other hand, if he had wither, he would be just as tricky versus creatures, but probably need to swing in less to be lethal, since he has the rest of the deck lowering their life total.

@Maniac_zombie, You cant put Claws of Valakut on this guy, hes pro red.

Does NOT fall to pyroclasm since the damage is prevented from any red source. DOES fall to Day of Judgment since it's not damage and it's not "target".
I want four of these dudes for my mono-black standard and it's not even an infect deck! I figure with four lashwrithe and two caress of phyrexia it will have a decent chance of winning me some games practically by itself. I'm hoping people would let it through a couple of times knowing that it's my only infect card and thus opening themselves up to caress.

His only downside is how bad he makes most other infect creatures look. Sometimes I feel like the pro red was litlle much, but I won't complain since I play him lol. Seriously in mono black, turn 3 drop him, turn 4 if you can do it safely drop the lashwrithe and wreck shop. In other builds you can definately do other things. Stonewood Invocation? Might of Oaks? Deffinately the bar to which most any other infect creature should be compared. And a high one.

Obviously Dismember is the best way to get rid of this guy, since against a dedicated Infect deck you're not going to care much about your life total. Also, Beast Within, for the same reason, the 3/3 Beast token isn't going to be as dangerous in a deck where they aren't gunning for your life total.

This guy would be almost a perfect counter to a legacy zoo deck but he needs only a tiny additional upgrade to do the job, and that's a P/T boost to handle the onslaught of Tarmogoyfs and Nactls.
Otherwise, he'll ignore Paths, Loam Lions, Kird Apes, Lightning Bolts and the like.

Of course, this means you NEED to pack some Unearths and Dark Rituals to keep this guy from being AWOL while you get pounded.

But otherwise this will almost entirely disable those pesky zoo decks since they lack both first strike and non-red/white removal. The problem is you're going to need something to buff your crusaders, and anything in the creature/enchantment realm IS very vulnerable to zoo shenanigans.

But it goes to show, a simple 3-drop zombie can outstrip a deck worth hundreds of dollars.

This thing has a ton of protections, yes.

But Go for the Throat, and Ultimate Price will kill it. And they are the common things to think of besides Doom Blade.

Sword of War and Peace mimics this level and kind protection.

A Sword of War and Peace ON a Tidehollow Sculler buids a Better Phyrexian Crusader.

Sword of Feast and Famine on Tidehollow Sculler or this is an absolute nightmare.

TWO Swords on Tidehollow Sculler is like a much easier to make Progenitus. In either case, you want Elspeth, Knight-Errant to protect both your Artifacts AND Creatures. I don't know any really easy ways to give Indestructible to both Swords and Sword-bearers

As others have said, this is pretty key for black infect.

Now that Phyrexia is old news, infect seems mostly forgotten, but I run a Black or Green infect deck and this guy is Christmas when I draw him. Infect remains one of my favorite mechanics, I have been playing poison decks for almost a decade and now I can actually compete. This guy is the most aggressive creature infect has. Like all infect creatures, he makes great use of equipment and creature buffing spells.

The way infect works, of course he is a bit too limited to use in other decks, but that is fine. If a card belongs in every deck, that is a problem. A well designed card has places it can excel, and this card excels enough to build a deck around.

Except it require 2 cards to make that tidehollow sculler. It also doesn't have infect (which may or may not be your strategy). If you look at it your way, this guy is MUCH better with a loxodon warhammer than tidehollow sculler.

Also, while it already takes 2 cards, it costs 5 mana to cast and equip the sword to the sculler.

Putting 2 swords on it does not make it like progenitus. If we could compare cards by just taking a pile of cards combined and comparing it with 1 card, then black lotus is worse than 4 lotus petals.

Knight of Infamy done right. Also, indestructibility reads LETHAL DAMAGE and effects that say destroy don't destroy this creature and Infect says this creature deals DEALS DAMAGE in the form of -1/-1 counters so why does indestructibility die to Infect???!!!!

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
This card is amazing. I play a red-black mostly vampire legacy deck and though it's my only infect creature, it has still won me games. It can't be blocked by two colours, nearly immune to removal and it can take out those annoying white indestructibles with -1/-1 counters. In my opinion, this is a card worth considering for any deck that contains black.

@edgarpoeallen

I'm not sure on the official rules, but I would imagine that an indestructible creature is not killed by the damage, but rather the state based action of it having 0 toughness. Again not sure, but maybe this means that indestructible creatures dying to infect go to the graveyard after any other creatures dyin to lethal damage (which can make a difference in the order certain effects trigger).

For a while I didn't get this card. I only ever seemed to pull it when playing against two particular friends that only really used red, white and Boros at the time. So it was a pretty decent card, I'd be giving them 2 poison counters a turn if I somehow couldn't find a buffing equipment or aura for him.
But then it went up against a green 3/3 and I realized how awesome first strike and infect go together. His creature became a 1/1, then dealt damage to my 2/2 so of course it survived.

There are so many things this guy can avoid dying from; he's perfect in my BUG Infect buff/unblockable deck.

Interesting interaction between Infect and First Strike - if this gets blocked by something with 3 power, it survives due to it weakening the blocker before it can hit back. That interaction makes it quite the creature to pump - with +6/+6, it survives Emrakul.

I'm looking for the best 3 drop creature for mono black legacy. Pro red and white is a huge deal in this format. Infect is what ruins this package. If it had wither instead I'd run 4 hands down. :( if you run him now you have to dedicate cards to pump his power, 5 turn clock is too slow in legacy, especially when the rest of your deck is doing damage not poison.
