It's a real shame I can't put an Edge of the Divinity on it. If the body was bigger it would be one of my favorite cards; it just dies to burn too quickly for my taste. Still a solid 4/5 from me, though.

They should've reused the art from the original headless horseman. That was one old card that actually looked pretty cool IMO.
Cheap mana cost, looks kinda like the headless horseman, and some pretty good powers, that also have a good mana cost.

Nice. But I still don't buy Headless Horseman being a Knight. And I still question 'Zombie' over "Spirit' for his other creature type (the Horsemans, that is, although the flying ability of this guy makes more sence if he's a ghost, ie: a Spirit).

I don't know why, but I'm not too impressed with this guy. You end up paying a total of 7 CMC for a flying, first strike 3/1, most of which only lasts until the end of the turn? The protection from white and black in this case acts as more of a drawback, as it blocks Edge of the Divinity. Would like to see at least +1+1 for . I am fairly new to Magic, is there something I'm missing?

There's a reason why this guy runs about $3 - $5 generally. Very solid. @nd best three-drop in mono-black after Vampire Nighthawk.

if you want to kill a creature, give it first strike and an appropriate boost to power. if you want to kill a player, give it flying and an appropriate boost to power.

Back in the day, people played Ihsan's Shade because there were no black removal spells that could kill black creatures, and the only other spot removal spells were white. Now with stuff like Terminate, Putrefy, and Maelstrom Pulse, being black no longer offers as much protection. Which is why this guy is so awesome, because unless you're playing against a red deck, he is basically immune to all removal except for red burn. Possibly the most removal-resistant creature in the game that doesn't have some form of shroud. If you really feel you must put things on him, play him in a white/green or black/green deck and Giant Growth him without fear.
Hmm... I now have a hankering to make a Necromancer's Covenant deck with this card included.

@SoulsDescend
You are making the mistake of reading this creature as just a big mana sink with all his powers stacked on top of each other. Most often you will throw your spare mana into this guy.
Stillmoon Cavalier is all about options. For example you need to get that last 3 damage to kill your opponent, sink 3 mana to make him a 3/1 with flying to kill your opponent. Or lets say you need to block a 2/2, pay 1 to make him have first strike and kill that 2/2 or depending on the mana you have open a,
3/3 or 4/4 ect..
Also many people forget how usefull the protection is. It allows him to remain unblockable against any white or black creatures, he can also block cards like baneslayer without dying.
He is also imune to some very powerfull kill spells path to exil, unmake, oblivion ring, ect...
@Revelation666
I have been playing mono-black zombies since 1999 and I love them more than any tribal type. While I do love Stillmoon Cavalier I feel that he takes up the 3 drop slot that needs to be filled with cards like lord of the undead, death baron, and fleshbag marauder.
My personal prefrence for a flexable creature in most zombie decks is stromgald crusader. It fills the 2 drop slot nicely and only loses protection from black (which often won't matter with cards such as doomblade) and the first strike ability of stillmoon.
I personaly run 4 of them. When comboed with the lords they become cheap yet effective, hard to remove flexable powerhouses that your opponents need to find answers to. I just feel that zombies don't have too many great two drops and have far too many good three drops. That one mana will make all the diffrence in most games as it will stop you from playing a lord at a critical time.
Just my two cents.

I love this guy, as he adds another creature that is usable in my pestilence deck, alongside cemetary gate which admittedly sucks. Also, its nice that he avoids black and white, so you only have to worry about red burning him. 4/5 easy. Great little cheap creature. But Why is he so damn expensive on ebay???

Does his protection mean that the effect of knight exemplar doesn't apply?

Knight Exemplar's ability is a global effect, so it will still have the abilities from her.

I've run him in my doran deck before, back when people were still going gaga over vampire hexmage - dark depths. Made marit alge look absolutely stupid lol. Tried it with Sword of Fire and Ice/ Umezawa's Jitte. It was a miracle i wasn't slapped by the guy across the table. This card is unbelievably useful. Just watch out for burn decks. Otherwise, this guy can take you places hehehehe.

this card really tares down about 90% of all decks white and black are by far the most used colors and he really tares down decks that have a lot of one or a another or both of them down. He is also great when facing green decks. Flying pretty much makes you unblockable when facing green and most green anti fliers wont work such as windstorm and Gravity Well because he doesn't have flying until you want him to and generally specking blue dose not have a lot of fliers ether. half fire breathing may not seem like much but he is pretty much unblockable and it works well with first strike really the only decks he is not awesome ageist are burn.

@ dragonking987: "generally specking blue dose not have a lot of fliers." There's this game called Magic I play, you might want to try it sometime, it's alot of fun.
(PS- Torchling and Thornling watchers- I think this guy is as good as you can expect for Whiteling or Blackling. There's no way those cards will actually be as good as this actually.)

The problem is now there's green removal that can nail him. Hornet Sting and Plummet, although both incredibly narrow, are also surprisingly useful in any mono-green.
If you boost his toughness somehow, the only thing you have to fear is Wrath of God, as nothing else will be able to kill him.

It is a shame one can't typically enchant him and he is overly-susceptible to burn, but I still find he often can carry a whole game by himself.

I still think Phyrexian Crusader survives better, having protection from red. Pump ability & flying are ok, but protection is enough evasion...usually. No need to pay to pump, when double strike is free. Both survive Doom Blade.

I SWEAR I DID NOT RATE THIS 0.5 TO LOWER ITS RATE(mostly its price)! Anyways, this is like a better Stromgald Crusader combine with White Shield Crusader . It should have a high rate that the two since it more likely to be useful against your opponent the first game.

I have an idea with this card for a red and black deck. Have Bazaar Trader out first and then play this card. Next turn play Lord of the Pit. Then tap Bazaar Trader and give your opponent Lord of the Pit. Have your opponent sacrifice all his creatures and eventually lose life. Use Stillmoon Cavalier with flying to block Lord of the Pit so your opponent can't attack you with him either.

For the record, this thing's based on the dullahan. The dullahan was an unseelie faerie from Irish myth, taking the form of a horseman carrying his head under his shoulder (which makes me wonder WHERE the head is supposed to be here). Its goal: Seek out those who are supposed to die and drag them to the afterlife. And no, running does no good--on its approach, gates, doors, and so on will just unlatch, unlock, and open on their own. Your only defense is to throw a bit of gold (even a pin will do) into its path--for some reason, dullahans are terrified of gold.

I'm also surprised no one has mentioned efficient burn cards such as Forked Bolt, Arc Trail, Electrolyze (I shot down a fresh Plated Geopede and Steppe Lynx with this beauty), (Which I personally use in Counterburn) Gut Shot (playable in ALL decks, including ones without basic Mountains, so take care he doesn't get splash-hated by anti-Delver of Secrets decks), format all-star Lightning Bolt and his pal Searing Blaze, Classic Goodie Fireball, Disintegrate, Red Sun's Zenith, Magma Spray, Kamigawa Sweetheart Glacial Ray spliced onto Lava Spike. . . It's unfortunate. Luckily He's in the same colors as Burrenton Forge-Tender.
Otherwise, you manage to stick a Sword of Fire and Ice on him or Mirran Crusader and just ranch the opposition.
Decks that have answers to every other threat that I push across the table often don't have an answer to this one!
