In mono-black outside of Innistrad block, this is better than Doom Blade. Amazing, amazing card.

It's like Rend Flesh in Kamigawa block.

And Rend Flesh kills Tidehollow Sculler :D

Out of Innistrad, this card is amazing, but it backfires in the strangest ways. It actually gives a reason to read the cards you're about to blast to bits. :L

The reason he looks so surprised is because he can't believe he's still alive after losing what is apparently every drop of blood in his body.

Should really read:
"Destroy target non-vampire, non-werewolf, non-zombie creature.
All permanents become red until end of turn. Blooooood red."

I love this card personally, in my eyes it says

{Black} {Black}
Destroy 1 of 5990 possible creatures in the magic the gathering game. Cannot target 354 creatures.

Now, speaking odds, this card is in your favor. If this was the casino, I would always bet on getting a creature that I could kill with this card. A lot better than "Destroy non black creature" rough odds of that are 4 in 5 chance. With the Destroy nonblack, you have a 20% chance of not being able to use it, where as this, you have a 5% chance of not being able to use it.

Why?

Because irony is hilarious.

In Innistrad, it says, Destroy target Demon, Human or Spirit. Or one of like 40 other creatures.

The thing that makes this card so deliciously evil is that it has the ability to take down demons... DEMONS! Imagine that, despite the underworld being a real tough place, once those demons walk the mean streets of Innistrad, they can become Victims of Night.

I can see Kuro, Pitlord getting shanked by a thug at night.

I don't think this card should be rated lower than Rend Flesh. Sure, technically Rend Flesh hits more, but 9/10 times spirit/zombie/vampire/werewolf is going to be irrelevant anyway, specifically in the eternal formats where this card shines. Sure, Rend Flesh is easier to splash, but this is 2cmc removal, which shouldn't be underestimated. This is the closest mono-black is going to get to Terminate any time soon.

@hedronMatrix

I KNOW!!! I'm surprised this card isn't rated higher. 4.3 for Doom Blade but this gets 3.8? Sure it's Black Black but wtf, it can kill literally hundreds more creatures and chances are you're gonna have that ONE more black mana

Are you telling me that a group of vampire punks can take out Kozilek, a god damned ANCIENT, OMNIPOTENT BEING THAT DEVOURS WORLDS, BUT CAN'T PUNCH OUT A DAMNED AMOEBOID CHANGELING!?

Yeah, that sounds about right.

In post-Gatecrash standard, this is a 4 or 4.5, since zombies, vampires, and werewolves are not played much, with a few exceptions like Stromkirk Noble and Falkenrath Aristocraft. The only real downside is the BlackBlack casting cost.

@AvatarofBro I would be inclined to disagree with you.

A. Rend Flesh is more splashable with its 2Black (cf Victim of Night's BlackBlack);
B. Rend Flesh targets 52 more cards (which I do consider a nigh-negligible amount);
C. Rend Flesh has the additional subtype "Arcane", which allows for things like "Splice onto Arcane" should you choose to build an arcane/spiritcraft/etc. deck (opening doors to great synergy such as Hana Kami-Soulless Revival-Rend Flesh).

Yes, Victim of Night costs 1 less to cast and that usually does make all the difference (case in point: Doom Blade vs. Dark Banishing), but Black so happens to have Dark Ritual (and by extension, Culling of the Weak), which allows you to cast Rend Flesh for just 1 CMC anyway.

And yes, you could counter that argument by saying "well, Culling the Weak would allow you to play TWO Victim of Night for the price of Black rather than just ONE Rend Flesh)". Sure, but there's something else going for Rend Flesh which imo places it over Victim of Night, and that is the fact that zombies, vampires and to a lesser extent werewolves are pretty popular tribals, whereas decks built entirely with spirits are less common (at least in my experience, I could be wrong).

I can't help but feel Rend Flesh tips the balance of pro's vs. con's slightly better. This doesn't stop Victim of Night from coming close, though.

Victim of Night: 3.75/5
Rend Flesh: 4/5

Can kill black creatures, so better than Doom Blade. Problem Progamers?

This is probably my all time favorite two mana kill spell. It is really flavorful, and I think it could find a home in some mono black decks.

@TexasDice

Except for a few things.
1. At least some zombies, vampires, and werewolves are not black, meaning doom blade and this spell have different targets. True, more are targetable by this than by doom blade, but it's still not strictly better.
2. The mana cost is important. {B}{B} is less splashable than {1}{B} even if it doesn't necessarily seem that way.

Still, interesting card.
