Love this girl, she's WAY cooler than Chandra Nalaar. These abilities are just so frickin' red, and that last one is a game-winner (pretty cool how Cruel Ultimatum is red...though that'll hardly be necessary since a few reused Lightning Bolts will be a finisher by that point.)

Correction, the thing making her very playable is jaya ballard who discards to your graveyard for use of one of 3 burn abilities. However, I still prefer the previous version, why? To use this one I have to stack my deck with enough of specific cards to make her ability count, and then she may never get to use it. Chandra nalaar only needs herself, has pretty solid abilities even if you don't use her ultimate, and her ultimate is still devastating. This one is good too, but its far more dependent on the lay out of a deck, much like nissa is, if you don't have any nissa's chosen for example.. well tough luck.

Opened her up in my second booster and she ended up being the reason my deck was half-red with splash of black and white. The games I played ended too quickly to put her third ability to use, but that second ability helped against those blue control decks, especially when I had no hand.

the only thing actually making her playable is Pyromancer's Ascension. at least you only need to keep her alive for 4 turns to win

edit: yes Jaya Ballard, Task Mage is helpful to Chandra, but i was walking about her playability in limited and standard, where only the ascension can help her. i cant honestly see any truely good decks being made in Zendikar limited, its not a set designed to be played alone from what i have scene. there are a few gems, but most of them are just useless or weak. i mean, the best non-broken card i have scene is Obsidian Fireheart. that isnt to say there arent good cards in the block, they are all just so easy to break decks with, expecially since the "land matters" theme of the block is obviously a strong indication of the best decks should be mono colored.

Maybe a gimp to the cardpool because of Timespiral/Shadowmoor/Lorwyn standard? i know i have some devestating cards from those blocks, but i havent scene a respectable number of good cards, only sub par and overpowered/broken

Omniance, you may like this version, but she is far weaker then her original form. even her second ability cant be really considered that good because you are discarding your hand. as Donovan_Fabian and i have said, this card is virtually unplayable

Hopefully they'll decide to reprint this version of her instead of her old Chandra Nalaar card in the next core set. Though the old Chandra was a strong card, I prefer this version as it allows you some extra utility as she does something other than damage.

Her second ability actually saved me three times at the prerelease. The first game it saved me because it prevented my opponent from playing a Day of Judgment that would've surely been the end of me, and the other two times I didn't have a hand as red never really has a hand in the late-game, and it let me draw a few extra cards, while thinning everyone else and screwing with their tempo a bit. All Chandra Nalaar does is damage, and even though she does a lot of it, I still don't like her as much as this card. As stated earlier her second ability won me three games, and though I never used her ultimate at the prerelease, I did use it afterwards at a few casual games, and I found it to be much more deadly in multiplayer then Chandra Nalaar's ultimate, since that only targets one player.

All in all I prefer this version of Chandra more, just because she seems to be a lot more flexible then the old one.

Imagine, early game you got a lot of goblin swarming your opponent, but at some point your opponent should be able to get rid of those goblin ( white got day of judgement, Red got volcanic fallout, earthquake, Black got infest, green can generate at least as many elf and other small creature to clok those, and blue, well blue is blue...)

So what happen when you get stuck, you cast Chandra ablaze, discard 3 card and ram your opponent with all the red instants and sorcery spell that you already unleashed on him. but this time it's all at the same time, other then blue with the new trap that cost 0 to counter all spell on the stack you should be in a good position to win.

10/1/2009 - "If the creature targeted by the first ability is an illegal target by the time it resolves, the entire ability is countered. You won't discard a card." - nice that you don't have to discard a card if this ability is countered

@Starkwolf fireball won't work with her ability since its activation costs will become 0 thus dealing 0 damage. For casting fireball from the graveyard you must use something like Yawgmoth's Agenda or Yawgmoth's Will and pay its cost regularly

I like this the most out of the 3 planeswalkers,

I dont like sorin,

( I was so excited to hear another black planeswalker coming out but when i saw him i was like, meh)

nissa should have been brought out in a dd separate from a block in like a goblin vs elf dd, c'mon, an elf planeswalker. ffs mtg, but then again i think it had to be done,

I never liked the first chandra, and i didn't think i would like this one, but when i saw it, i was really impressed 4.5/5

I dont see why everyone says she is as good as they are saying. I feel she should be one less mana to play and to compromise 1 loyalty counter to do that if need be. But she is not good in burn decks. There is no point, you can just use your cards as themselves, and in a normal burn deck, by the time you get her out, there is no point anymore.
her second ability is great because it can screw your opponent and help you or just give draw 3 for you.
her 3rd ability i admit is a POWER in a burn deck or similar decks that use lots of sorcery's or instants that can be useful later on in the game.
but the first ability is useless. you can play the burn spells as burn spells, and by the time she is out, you want to finish your opponent off, not play her, in a burn deck.
Chandra is good in a normal deck that if its later in the game, you discard any kind of cards that normally wouldn't burn, and you make them burn spells. and change the way your deck works in a tight spot.
It is true that it can soup up your burn spells to deal 4 damage instead of 3 or 2, but i find it not as useful.
i would greatly appreciate if someone would show me why it would be good in those situations as well.

How does her third ability apply to cards like banefire and fireball whose damage is based on there cost?
JaxsonBateman
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Pretty nifty in limited where you can have trouble getting 'enough' spot removal. Turning any red card into a 4 damage burn can help finish off the opponent or clear the board of their creatures. Generally her major won't be quite effective due to having very few sorceries and instants, but her second ability is also great - discard/play cards til you've got nothing, then force your opponent to discard and get 3 cards yourself for your trouble (of course, it might be advantageous to not do this if your opponent has less than 3 cards themselves and you're in a dominant position).

this card is amazing. completely embodies the spirit of red.
the only problem is that the CMC is way too high for any decent burn deck. I guess she's useful if the game isn't over by the time you can play her , but you're also doing something wrong and need to take another look at your burn deck.

I love her synergy with Pyromancer Ascension. Use her +1 to fill your graveyard with spells to activate the Ascension, then let loose with her -7 once it's active. Assuming you have four Shocks (conservative given the ridiculous level of burn spells these days), discard two of them to Chandra then use the remaining two to power the Ascension. Fire the ultimate and Chandra has done 28 damage to your opponent over the course of three turns. An idealistic scenario, to be sure, but even a watered down version of it will leave your opponent pretty well battered.

She's definitely better than the first Chandra, her first ability is amazing, a mini-Winds of Change is great for a burn deck and her Ultimate is essentially an auto-win. The only problem is than 6 mana is very costly for a burn deck, which should have your opponent dead by turn six or better.

The closest thing to a Planeswalker for madness/threshold decks.
However my madness deck is red and black, so not as good as it could be.. but still very awesome.
It only lets me discard once per turn as a sorcery, and its ability only benefits red cards, but said ability does hit for 1/5th of your life!
Plus the added benefit that all planeswalkers give.... being a target that isn't you!

Flat out amazing for burn decks.

The potential to draw new cards is a nice touch too. As well as procing madness on everything.

I honestly don't think this card is that great; maybe okay late game, and by that point if you're playing red burn you should have won by then. Nalaar is cheaper and is better overall, and I don't like the fact you have to discard cards to up her counter. Since when does red have an abundance of cards to discard late game? I have yet to even see this being played.

Her second ability is useless since Burning Inquiry costs R. I guess if you're playing tons of burn spells, and you make it to turn 8 without her getting hit, it's worth the finish. That actually sounds tempting now come to think of it lol.

Nalaar is better if you want a red planeswalker

Nalaar's +1 ability is a bit lackluster, but it does clock your opponent. the -X is the key feature, letting you burn out a bunch of little creatures or take out just about any fatty. The ultimate is very game-breaking, which gives your opponents a lot of urgency to kill her, getting damage off your dome or burning through their removal/counters. The biggest strength of Chandra though is that she can easily kill more than one creature or get damage off of you, which gives red a rare card advantage source. She functions very similar to Comet Storm, the new spoiled card that everyone is losing their panties over. She is very good in multiples too.

Ablaze? The +1 ability is trash. You get a little bit more utility out of your burn spells, but why do you have burn spells in your hand on turn 6? If it could turn spare lands into burns, then it'd be good. But it does not. The ultimate is not as game-breaking as Nalaar's either, since ablaze's is only good if you've got cards in your graveyard (if someone uses, say, relic of progenitus or jund charm, ablaze will cry), while nalaar is good no matter when you use it. The -2 ability is the only one that at all intrigues me. Late game draw 3 on a stick is pretty nice, and if you can use up cards faster than your opponent it is pretty reasonable card advantage. In extended, she has potential in All In Red, as if you can pop her out turn 1, and use the second ability, you're going to net a few cards, and your opponent is going to lose 4 cards. Mulligan to 3? Pretty hard to get out of that. Then she'll wincon by turning topdecked mana accel into 4 damage. Unfortunately she costs 6, which puts her out of seething song range, making her difficult to cast.

THIS IS A GREAT CARD!
Anyone who has ever played a red deck knows that you pretty much have to be able to win with the first 10 cards or in the first 3 turns because you will probably stall out. Ablaze makes it possible for a more controlling game with a burn deck allowing you to replenish your hand and adds so many possibilities for combos such as in a discard deck with megrim or even pyromancer ascension just to name some obvious ones.
I am planing on using her in a G/R deck because she rounds out both colors perfectly adding card drawing abilities and direct damage for removal and maybe just that final little slap in the face to finish someone off.

What's nice about Chandra Ablaze is she's really an ungraded form of Nalaar both cards have certain aspects that some times make one more favorable to have than the other. I know some people say she's not really good for burn and your right in my book burn is only part of her function. The plus one ability works on ANY red card. If your had is full with burn spells whats the point maybe one or two extra damge and some more mana to use on something else (which if you think about it isn't that bad of a deal really) but if you get a junky one drop creature that's a 1/1 haste you can turn it into 4 damage instead or something else along those lines.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
The thing I like about this Chandra is that each of her abilities can make her a focal point of any deck that can use it.

Her first ability can work really well in a deck based on Unearth or Madness. Drop your Unearther (Hellspark Elemental comes to mind) and fill up your graveyard for the big unearth strike.

Her second ability's my personal favorite; it makes the idea of combining Megrim, Underworld Dreams, Howling Mine and Font of Mythos into a deck abusing that second ability. Just try not to do this when your opponent is playing a red deck because of Lightning Bolt.

Her third ability is hilarious with Cruel Ultimatum mostly, but Titanic Ultimatum and even Violent Ultimatum. Add in Pyromancer Ascension and Replicate/Kicker for more hilarity. What's that? (10 more life for me and 10 life less for you, two creatures, six discards, six draws, two creatures back?), (+10/+10, lifelink, first strike and trample?), (6 permanents gone?) It also, of course, has great synergy with her first ability.

Love this one.

No one can deny that the new planeswalkers are becoming much more specialized with time. This has given place to a lot of critics against Chandra Ablaze, stating that Chandra Nalaar is much better because she could be included in practically any deck that runs red.

It is quite evident that this version of Chandra is much more powerful than the last. Although its CMC went up by 1, and its loyalty counters down by 1, this Chandra is much more flexible than Nalaar. Nalaar first ability pings for a miserable one damage, and the second one requires taking counters off her equal to the amount of damage you want to do, which is very costly should you want to take down a toughness 3 or more. Her ultimate is pretty amazing, and only takes 2 turns since she is out, but still, it is kinda useless should the opponent bear no creatures.

Ablaze, on the other side, can do up to 4 damage with her +1 ability, although this requires discarding a red card. However, lots of mechanics can be taken advantage this way (madness, flashback, pyromancers ascension, effects like flame burst, etc, etc. Her second ability is sick, as it is no surprise for a burn deck to run out of fuel. It also possibly screws the opponents card advantage and it could prove very useful with discarding- drawing damage abilities such as Megrim and Underworld Dreams. Her ultimate, different to Nalaar, is almost for sure a gamewinner, since in a red deck, it would take about only 3 spells to do 7-9 damage, and if you had many more, you could aim them all to your opponent, should he bear no creatures, or viceversa.

Even though some cards can easily shut her down, by removing graveyard, for example, its not a common thing, and Chandra could easily come back from it. As I said, its much more specialized then Nalaar, but then, Tezzeret is the most specialized of planeswalkers, and I simply cannot imagine somebody complaining about him, unless you have to face him, of course.

@dougcotts: You could technically discard a card from a hand containing 0 cards, since "discard a card" is part of the effect, not the activation cost. However, the only result would be that her loyalty goes up by 1.

My burn deck loves this card, if it doesn't win by the time she hits the field. I normally discard the last card in my hand on the turn I play her, to either take out a creature or drop my opponent's life, and then use her -2 effect next turn. End result: I have 6-7 untapped lands and 3 cards that will be either ball lightning, fireball, lightning bolt or Goblin Guide (or something similar), with an opponent who is usually at 5-10 life. Works perfectly.
That said, she's sideboarded right now, since most of my games don't last long enough for me to have 6 mana available. If she costed less, she'd be great, but Constructed doesn't have much for mana accel in mono red.

This and her previous incarnation (but particularly this) aren't as good for burn as some people are making them out to be. People, if mono-red burn doesn't win on turn 5, it's game, so hardcasting this girl is out of the question. So that leaves adding Rituals and Songs to the deck... but why are you watering down your card advantage by running mana accel instead of more cheap burn spells?

I don't know why everyone is saying Nalaar is better... i got Ablaze first and then i decided to have both in my burn deck. I really like Nalaar's ultimate but i've only used it once, whereas when i team up Ablaze with Squee, Goblin Nabob its 4 damage no matter what each turn. I have two squees so odds are that i get one. i have a ton of volcanic hammers, shocks, a lava axe or two, and toss in an elemental appeal for an instant win as soon as i cast her ultimate. In a single turn, using Ablaze i've dealt 32 damage... while i love Nalaar, i don't think she can be considered better than Ablaze. Also @ whoever said they didn't like Sorin: what the hell? Sorin has one of the greatest ultimates ever. I've both used Sorin and had him used against me, and any time he comes out he wins.

This card is much much better in a burn deck than Chandra Nalaar.

It's first ability lets you deal 4 damage. Sure, you have to discard a card, but it's frickin 4 DAMAGE!!! Discard your Lightning Bolt, Burst Lightning, or your Shock or maybe even your Thunderbolt and you will be saving mana, giving a loyalty counter, and dealing more damage than the card is supposed to do.

The second ability should definitely NOT be underestimated. If you are a true burner, your hand should be empty by turn 3, so this ability not only takes away the opponents' hand, but also give you more burn spells, add more card to the graveyard for ability number 3, or even more cards to waste for numero 1.

Her "nuke" ability is great. Ablaze's first and second abilities have great synergy with this one. As long as your opponent doesn't lay down a Leyline of the Void, a Bajuka Bog, or a Relic of Progenitus quickly, this pretty much ends the game.

Sure, the mana cost is a bit pricy for burnout, but... it's a planeswalker... seriously.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
She goes great with Pyromancer's Ascension, since you can discard a card that you're holding another copy of. Discard one Staggershock to deal 4 damage, then cast your other one, and when it rebounds you'll be good to go. Problem is getting to 6 mana quickly enough for this to matter. Mono red is not good with acceleration, and she's a bit too red-intensive for multicolor, but perhaps splashing a bit of green could work.
Falgorn
★★★★☆ (4.4/5.0) (5 votes)
First off, just make sure you have mana acceleration and that you can protect her. After that, Chandra Ablaze, then Sphinx-Bone Wand, next turn Eye of the Storm and go-go dear Chandra ultimatum!

Recasting as few as three red instants and/or sorceries amounts to 45 damage. Recasting 6, which is a more probable number in such a deck amounts to a nice 378 damage. And that's only Sphinx-Bone Wand damage. Not counting possible additional damage from the 21 red spells that 'll actually resolve. Do the math. And rejoice...

With the rotation, I believe she becomes pretty decent in RDW. Koth can get her out turn 5, and she can be used to add some consistency to a deck running Koth - she can be used to turn extra planeswalkers into damage. And since you'll want to run 4 Koth's...you want her around.

Good card all around. Her +1 turns every card into an uber Lightning Bolt, which is great for slower games, or for using Goblin Guides to kill Wall of Omens/Overgrown Battlements. Her -2 has a lot of potential, essentially forcing the opponent to empty their hand or play around it, and refreshing your hand. And her ultimate, like so many of the new planeswalkers, basically says "-7: You win."

A candidate for the worst planeswalker ever printed. And yet she's still pretty good! She comes online late, meaning she's not likely to get her job done in time outside of casual, but she can still really mess up the game, even if she doesn't get to her ultimate.
KingRusty
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
In a casual game she can murder, especially in my Grixis burn deck. I use graveyard cycling to burn as the primary mechanic and copy sorceries with various effects as well.

This with Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind and Liliana's Caress and Chandra's second effect. It's at least 3 damage not accounting for the cards discarded. It's a beefed up Blightning basically.

Discard Kris Mage for the first effect and bring it back to your hand with Undertaker or some other card capable of looping. Instant 4 damage each turn, plus a +1 loyalty counter on Chandra. The first effect is arguably the best.

This card has my vote as one of the best planeswalkers. If you run Izzet or Grixis she is useful beyond belief. Planeswalkers have unique traits just like other cards. Just because she can't be put into any burn or red deck doesn't mean she sucks, she's Godly in mine. I like the Tezzeret argument. I like him and he's fantastic with Darksteel decks and Myr decks, but I have no use for him and I run a blue/white artifact deck.

I was looking for an efficient way to use Dragonstorm. When I read her (-7) ability I was like "Holy ****." I have to figure out a way to pull this off.

I love chandra ablaze with lava axe and bolt lightning in 1v1. discard axe and cast lightning or vise versa if low with mana then cast all from grave always an overkill.

I run her in my mega burn deck but she sometimes falls short against Koth, seeing as he can come out earlier. his emblem can be used to keep chandra down if need be.
I use most of the burn cards for creature control while Chandra is getting ready. Dumping mana inefficient cards like Lava Axe only to bring them back later for free is pretty cool though. Toss a Reverberate into the mix and its a much shorter game.

Ah, this card is a Timmy's dream. It has the kind of ultimate where you could annihilate entire TABLES of players.

Board wipes? Card tutors? Draw spells? Discard? Recursion? Blasts to the face? This girl does it all when she gets off.

Ultimate + Fire Servant/Furnace of Rath + Pyromancer's Ascension. Even if you only used a lightning bolt and a shock, if you cast both, the Lightning Bolt is doubled and then twinned, dealing 12 damage, and Shock gets the same treatment, quadrupling the damage and coming out to a clean 20 damage with two spells. If you're running the right kind of deck, even if your Fire Servant gets blasted or your Ascension gets fizzled you can still destroy an enemy with full life. Good card and an amazing combo.

Works great with Chandra's Phoenix. "Whenever an opponent is dealt damage by a red instant or sorcery spell you control or by a red planeswalker you control, return Chandra's Phoenix from your graveyard to your hand." Discard the Phoenix, hit an opponent for 4, Chandra's Phoenix comes back to your hand.

If you cast a card "without paying its mana cost," you can't pay any alternative costs. You can pay additional costs, such as kicker costs. <--- this rule makes me happy =)

Insane and underrated. Quite easily played in a deck that runs Seething Songs and Desperate Rituals on turn 3. Paired with a Red Sun's Zenith type card, use the ultimate, bringing back all the mana giving cards for free! Chandra's Phoenix is my favorite card to discard with her first ability, as it comes right back to your hand. Red seems to run out of hand fairly quickly, making her second ability a real treat, especially when your opponent has a near full hand.

Overall, in the right deck, Ablaze is the best Chandra out there.

She has the most nuance and synergy of any Chandra, but her high mana cost is pretty punishing. Overall, I prefer Chandra, the Firebrand for actual play, but I do appreciate what they're going for with this card. 4/5

Chandra Ablaze is a AMAZING CARD!!!!! The ability that discards a red card and deals 4 damage to target creature or player is awesome. And afterward don't worry because you can play it without paying its MANA COST (any number) and do that ability+4 damage.

Try using it with Jace, Memory Adept in an Izzet self mill deck, getting all of your red spells into your graveyard then go ultimate, it's not a competitive strategy, but fun for casual Johnnys

Hahaha... run a deck with a lot of Shocks, Lightning Bolts and the like, discard those to feed Chandra - her +1 ability deals more damage than those spells would do and does so for free. Then drop a Fire Servant and cast her ultimate. Kaboom. Overkill.

Yup, I'd have to say, I play her in a jund discard burn control deck, she's too mean. She's a winner everytime she comes out, and as a foil...gorgeous.
She has great synergy with Liliana's Caress and hard to find better discard spell than Blightning.
It's really nice to be able to control early with burn, aggro mid-game with Bloodbraid Elf, flip into some card advantage and blast away.
Liliana Vess works nicely in the late game, especially since I use Temple Bell to help make sure they don't run out of cards to discard.
Chandra wins games, her -2 works great with Lili's Caress and her +1 protects her from getting overwhelmed by creatures. Goin to six loyalty her first turn makes it very likely she'll stick around a turn. If she can get her ultimate off...buying back lightning bolts, slagstorms and Blightnings usually means win. 5/5.

@Sage_Phoenix Sadly, that doesn't work as the Chandra's Phoenix since the source of damage isn't an instant or a sorcery -- it's a Planeswalker.

I hardly ever see anyone running this card in EDH, and I think it has to be because of misunderstanding. It's the only card in the game where you can make each player discard their hand and draw only 3 cards. Have you seen the size of some peoples' hands in EDH? It's not uncommon to see a table full of 7 card hands well into turn 7 and 8. If you're the one guy who always plays down to 3 or less by that time, this basically makes each opponent discard ~4 cards each, and should probably be played in a lot of decks just on that basis alone. Forget the other abilities. So no, this isn't necessarily as build-around-me as it looks. You don't have to run into the arms of Squee, Goblin Nabob just because you put this in.

I have a rules question about Chandra Ablaze, if I use her 3rd ability to recast an X spell like blaze, can I pay extra mana into X?
I looked at the card rulings and it stated that you can pay extra costs like kicker but does this apply to X in a mana cost?

I am a bit of a noob, an also a casual player, though i have an interesting question. Could it be good to run 4 tibalts 4 Koths and 4 Chandra ablazes in mono-red so that you can have 3 planeswalkers out at the same time, fill your graveyard , while doing damage, and then using chandras ultimate you can end up with 3 lightning bolts and 3 incinerates. As there are a lot of threats on your side your opponent might find it difficult to chose what walker to kill, and as you run 4 you can cast another once it is dead.

306.4. If two or more planeswalkers that share a planeswalker type are on the battlefield, all are put into their owners’ graveyards as a state-based action. This is called the “planeswalker uniqueness rule.”

You can have 4 of them in your deck, hand, graveyard, etc. Only one at a time on the battlefield, of each type. "Planeswalker -- type"

Crazy hag throwing magic around and causing as much mental as physical agony? This should be a Black card. Named Bellatrix Lestrange, Planeswalker. Painter's Servant is a good combo piece :)

You know, this card is nice and all, but +1 and you have to discard is kinda sad. :/ I don't mind that -2 costs me my hand, but I'd like to draw more than three cards. -3 for discard hands + draw five seems a good place. Not as good as Wheel of Fortune or Reforge the Soul but good enough.

This is a very 'all in'/Big Red card, so if you're going to be paying any costs like discarding, might as well make sure you're discarding a LOT to GET a lot back, rather than discarding a few to get things slightly better than you could get without discarding..

I really don't understand why this Chandra is not rated slightly higher, I mean yeah in comparison to the first Chandra and the newer Chandra's she is a bit harder to cast but all three of her abilities rock. Her +1 is just awesome, and it makes her ultimate that much more dangerous. Granted she almost always gets killed off by a slightly intelligent player but when she unleashes it wins me the game.

EDIT: On a side note I got four Zediker(?) booster packs online and in each one I got her. I now have four Chandra Ablaze!
