An interestingly thoughtful card. Just for fun, give him a spyglass, so both you and your opponent have a chance to look at the top card of your library for lands!

That drawback of his can actually easily turn into a bit of advantage - if it's not a land sitting on top, you still get to see their next card, and that's gaining valuable information - something very rarely seen in mono red! Besides that, he's still a 2/2 hasty goblin for one mana. Nuts! 5/5

The problem isn't giving them another land (since a good deck should already allow you to play a land each turn anyways). The real problem is that it gets the land cards out of the way so that the opponent can get to the non-land cards in his deck much faster without having to worry about drawing lands (which isn't always a problem since you should usually always have a decent hand in a good deck). The idea is that any deck that has Goblin Guide in it should be able to win fast enough so that the opponent doesn't have time to play those extra cards. That's {R}'s style.

Hey Coyotemoon this card is normally played in super fast aggro decks that dont care if ur opponent gets another land in his hand bc ur goal is to drop him as fast as possible. Know what i mean. Plus the card has to be revealed which makes this beautiful little one drop mesh really well with cards like thought hemorrhage bc u know what ur opponent is drawing if it turns out to not be a land. Best one drop in standard hands down.

Turn 1 Goblin Guide, Attack for 2 (Total damage 2)
Turn 2 Goblin Guide, Goblin Guide, Attack for 6 (Total damage 8)
Turn 3 Trumpet Blast, Attack for 12 (Total damage 20)

I think this is the 2nd quickest way to win in Standard next to 4 triggered Archive Traps on opponent's 1st turn after he used his fetchland/terramorphic expanse. Any thoughts?

you think about it mdakw567, and it isnt much of a card advantage, it is a land, and sure they will get their land drop, but if you are hitting a pocket, and you are giving them 2 lands, then it is dead weight in hand, can only play 1, usually, there are some cheats, but not enough to be really concerned

he is nice, 2/2 haste is annoying early game, and hard to stop without a casualty till round t3+ so you gotta figure around 4 damage, 6 on the play

great aggro card, but if you get unlucky (or your opponent gets lucky) and goblin guide makes your opponent reveal a land every time it attacks, you're in big trouble due to all the card advantage he gets.

@ Dingo777

It's still card advantage either way. If they get a land put into their hand because of goblin guide, that's a draw they didn't waste on a land.

Why do you think treasure hunt is a good card? It will only get you one nonland card, but the point is that you'll get all the lands out of the way (provided you use ponder or halimar depths, etc), meaning your regular draws will more likely hit your nonland cards.

@ Htoth3izzO

I'm pretty sure it's not counted as drawing a card. The ability says that if it's a land card the player "puts it into his or her hand". That's not the same thing as drawing the card.

I love this card, he reminds me of Arc-Slogger. How? He has a big drawback that makes him difficult to evaluate.

However, I play aggro a lot, and I can attest that this guy is awesome. He is one of the fastest one-drops in the game, and will quickly have your opponent in the single digits. The drawback matters little. Even if EVERY time they get a free land, they will be dead or at burn range before that card advantage you have given your opponent matters.

To be fair, Baneslayer Angel is really what I would worry about most. She is such a huge pain for RDW, and now with Kor Firewalker the archtype will have a hard time finding success. So now I can get them cheap for casual :P

A 2/2 with haste for R is great.

A 2/2 with haste for R that shows you the next card your opponent is drawing, therefore allowing you to prepare is GREAT.

My opponents always freak when this is my first turn play, but that's nothing compared to this when it does happen:

T1: Goblin Guide Swing for 2 (18)
T2: Goblin Guide, land Swing for 4, bolt for 3 (11)
T3: land, ball lightning Swing for 10 (1)

That's when they scoop. Unless they have a t2 Wall of Omens, most of the time when I have a hand like that its game over pretty quick. Honestly, I've kept 2 Landers and sometimes 1 Landers if I have 2 of these guys in my hand and still managed to win. This guy is pretty damn good and at times the drawback can help you as well as force them to discard a card if they only play a land on their 1st turn if you revealed a land on your first turn.

It's nice to know that red finally lives up to its reputation of being the "fast color" by getting a one-drop 2/2. I always found it annoying that white has better one-drops than red (see Savannah Lions and the Hound of Konda for examples). However, it does sadden me to see Raging Goblin become so clearly outclassed, but I suppose that shouldn't stop a goblin deck from running both.

KyoDarkFire
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
In most cases (since most decks have around 20 lands or so), it will only turn on advantage to your opponent about 30-35% of the time, which is still an awesome deal for a 2/2 with haste for a single Red mana

Very fast card with what usually amounts to a small drawback.

@grandkill: tied with god-draw "Quest for the Holy Armor" with Mox (which can 3-turn through blockers played on turns 1 and 2), certain Infect decks, and a few others (Triggered Summoning Trap for example).
Internet_decks_lame
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Not too sure about this guy... 2 damage for potential card advantage. Most decks are 30-35% land. 1 in 3 chance to give the guy a card for 2 damage. And once a blocker comes down, they become really BAD!!! Ok sure you get to spy on the oppoent... but your probably playing RED!!!!! Red doesnt sit back and play evasive or a control style... Cards fly, and quick, and if they dont... you'll get burned... I really don't think the spying is worth possibly feeding your opponent an extra land draw. The only place I see this fitting very efficiently with... mono red burn and being the only creature in the deck. Turn 1 guide vs turn 1 bolt could = slightly faster kill if the oppoent is sitting on his ass...

This guys nightmare = Qasali Ambusher but dont worry the turn 1 ritual & specter feel the same sting from that kitty. Also... cards like Harm's Way really take the punch out of this guy.

2/2 Haste for 1 is still pretty decent.

Is it REALLY a drawback? How about this in a Blk/Rd force opponent to draw & then lose life deck (sorry, I'm sure there's a technical term for that but idk it yet). Red has some cards that forces opp to draw & then take damage fir it, black has some crazy cards that do the same. I wouldn't have a lot of critters in a deck like that but 4 of this lil dude could actually help when the supposed drawback hits. He seems badass (not $87.52 badass but, $10.00 badass for sure!) lol.

I play RDW and four copies of this guy, and honestly I feel he is broken. Against control, he's beating for 2 every turn and forces removal. Against aggro, he sits back and trades favorably. The equivalent red card without the drawback is Goblin Chariot, which costs three times as much. Starting off the game with your opponent at 14 and with an extra card or two in hand sounds good to me. 5/5.
Burn_Yo_Momma
★★☆☆☆ (2.9/5.0) (4 votes)
I have a burn deck and I use this because it's really good.
But I have to say it is broken...
One drop, haste, 2/2... Completely unbalanced.
And the ability that was supposed to make him acceptable might actually help you.
Should never have been printed.
Zoah
★★☆☆☆ (2.9/5.0) (4 votes)
This card should not exist!

A 2/2 one drops should be handled very delicately. Their great, but very breakable.
B there should be no one drops with hast... (I mean really, a game should not be decided on the flip of the coin to figure out who goes first)

I guess either, by itself, would be acceptable. But both? No, this card is broken. No, shattered.

But anyway... The drawback is what's supposed to make this card balanced, it doesn't. At worst, it gives your opponent a few more lands. Something that, in aggro, won't matter that much. At best, it lets you see their next card.

Due to it being such a good card for aggro: *****, because it's so "good" that it manages to break down barriers that shouldn't have ever been touched.

I think it's silly that people call this card unbalanced. There are so many balance issues in Magic, this one doesn't even register. I can spend 7 mana to put out an amazing creature, and a guy with a blue deck can pay one mana to get rid of it. But Goblin Guide is unbalanced?

Honestly, Goblin Guide is exactly what Red needs to be balanced. Two damage on turn one, before the blue and white people can get their counterspells and Pascifisms out.

@TwoStars: "It's funny how we started with Mons's Goblin Raiders, then Crazed Goblin, then Raging Goblin, then Goblin Bushwacker, and finally, this."

Your chronology is way off.

Mons's Goblin Raiders came first, sure, but Crazed Goblin was in Darksteel, which was seven years after Raging Goblin was first printed in 1997. Furthermore, Goblin Bushwhacker was printed in the same set as Goblin Guide here, so you can't really say that Bushwhacker came before this.

It's an interesting point you're trying to make, but it's also entirely inaccurate.

2/2 for Red -> DAMN!!!
2/2 GOBLIN for Red with HASTE which blah blah blah... -> WHAT??????????

Consider also that if you have more than one attacking, defending player looks always at the same top card of his/her library if it is not a land.
For example, if you attack with three of these, three abilities trigger:
- the first resolves, opponent looks at the top card; it's a land, so it takes it in hand
- the second resolves, opponent looks at the top card; it's not a land, it remains on the top of library
- the third resolves, the top card of the library is always the same; it's not a land.
Were there one thousand of these abilities on the stack, the nonland card on top of the library is always the same!

This is a really lovely creature that gives you some good first turn pressure, but it can also really hurt you if you get unlucky. No one likes giving card advantage to their opponent, but swinging for 2 on the first turn? That can really get a red deck the momentum it needs. I'd say that nine times out of ten this card is a real early game winner with a perfectly red flavor!

This really is a great card, but I think it wouldn't be too hard for your opponents to abuse it and use this against you; especially when they play a green deck. This could help them a lot on mana accelerating. Additionally, if they use the Sylvan Library & Abundance "Draw Combo", they would never mind to reveal their whole hand. I think thhis work best in a Red Blue deck, countering all upcoming threat.

I hardly see that as a drawback, really.

If you reveal a non-land, you now know what they're going to draw. If they get a land, they might have to discard if they have nothing to play (particularly on turn 1 Guide's).

There's so much good in this one little goblin that I didn't figure out until it rotated out of standard.

Mind you, I do enjoy paying "only" $5/each rather than $10.

It's pretty surprising how much giving card advantage/filtering to your opponent isn't as much of a drawback as you'd expect. One of his benefit also comes from being a powerful blocker after he ceases to be relevant on offence.

The flavor of him revealing places to your opponent is pretty neat as well. I'm guessing the damage comes from him leading you into a trap and the haste is from him being so darn excited to get there.
