With Vampire Nighthawk protecting her, the final ability doesn't seem so far out of reach.
With her personal cards in M11, she's going to be a bit more of a nuisance,
But I love B for color, so that's just fine in my opinion.

So glad she is getting love from M11. She is a very fun to play, but typically overlooked. She combines a continuous TARGETED discard effect, a top-of-library tutor (which combines wonderfully with jace beleren) and mass rise from the grave. Very black, very flavorful.

This, plus Liliana's Caress plus Blightning, and you have yourself a combination to be reckoned with!

I really like Liliana and she's quite powerful when combined with Liliana's Caress, Megrim, other discard effects, and draw effects, BUT it seems like they really nerfed her by printing Obstinate Baloth. That card will make you afraid to play Liliana's basic +1 ability. I don't like how a single card can nerf a single Planeswalker like that. It's not like Vampire Hexmage, which is useful against all Planeswalkers, including the overpowered Super Friends (Gideon, Jace 2.0, Elspeth). Liliana, however, is balanced and Obstinate Baloth just ruins her day.

she was my first planeswalker, my only complaint is that by the time she gets out, my opponents often dont have a hand, which makes her +1 a bit underwhelming... other than that, great card, great art, and very black feeling.

If your opponent has no hand, you can look at her first ability as a way to discard your own Rise from the Grave targets.

Bad concept. The first ability is too weak. The second one should be blue and the third one will be too late.

I made several black decks and I kicked her out of all of them. Just too useless for a queen of death.

How can a planeswalker be rated so low?? All planeswalkers deserve at lease 4.3-4.5. None of them actually suck!

★★★★☆ (4.0/5.0) (5 votes)
@Cheza: ...you've heard of Vampiric Tutor, right? Because that's what her -2 is. Black pretty much monopolizes tutoring of all types, in fact.

They were certainly more conservative with walkers back in Lorwyn, Liliana's not tearing up Standard. But she's great at forcing your opponent into topdeck mode, and finding you the answer you need for next turn. Perfectly playable in most casual black decks.

To n00bmag1's point, I once had Iona, Shield of Emeria in hand, then used Liliana's tutor ability to find a Rise from the Grave. Next turn, discarded Iona and brought her back using Rise from the Grave. My opponent scooped. Love Liliana's combo potential.

@yesnomu

Let's not forget the original tutor, Demonic Tutor (which got a reprint with Liliana on it in her Duel Deck, sweet!)

So yea, black is the originator of the tutor effect so her second ability IS black. I have yet to use her ultimate, but her biggest ability was her tutoring to get me cards I wanted. Card advantage is an underrated, but very important aspect of the game and having a permanent that can let you get the exact card you want when you need it is a huge advantage.

I just use her to tutor cards. for 5 mana and +1 turn, she can cast 3 tutors :D if not, 5 mana for 2 tutors isn't such a bad deal imo.

This card in a black discard deck is totally devastating! :)
If your opponent has nothing to discard, tutor for something that will help you more.
Also combos well with both versions of her boyfriend, Jace.

Really, she's good. 5 mana is a little high, especially considering like every good planeswalker is a 4-drop, but at least it's not 6 like Sorin Markov.

This is how you play her:
1) Cast Liliana
2) Tutor
3) Tutor
4) Make them discard
5) Tutor; Liliana is dead, but you just got 3 cards that you needed. With three chosen cards from your deck, you really shouldn't have any problem with winning unless you were getting spanked to begin with.

Dear WotC:

Liliana is awesome. We've been waiting very patiently for an upgrade. May we make a suggestion?

How about;

Liliana, Grave Witch 2BB

0: Destroy target creature, you lose life equal to that creature's toughness.

-1: Add BBB to your mana pool.

-5: Each other player loses life equal to the number of creature cards in their graveyards. You gain life equal to the amount lost this way.

Super card.
Tutor effect is great
I played with friend and I used her last ability.
Combinate it with Decimator Web and you can cast a lot of creatures. I casted 8 creatures plus 1(my creature)....total power was 27 or 29.....Decimator Web with this is super combo.
But its on luck of course.

Liliana can be a very, very useful tool if you know how and where to use her. She is a 'four of' in my reanimator deck and she never dissapoints for a number of reasons.

-Her +1 ability is VERY useful in reanimator because you can use it to target not only an opponent for some FREE card advantage, but also target yourself to easily get a creature from your hand into the grave for an exhume or reanimate... FREE.

-Probably her most utilized ability is her amazing -2, which tutors any card to the top of your library. Obviously a good way to get a solid combo going very fast, or grab a Wrath of God if it looks like it's about to hit the fan. If she's under fire, use this ability to tutor up another Liliana Vess or other planeswalkers to seriously annoy an opponent.

-Her ultimate -8 ability, which I havn't yet had the privelage of using yet, is simply dominating in reanimator. One or two Buried Alives or playing this late game gains you massive field advantage.

All that, AND she comes into play with a whopping 5 loyalty counters. For those reasons, she is my favorite planeswalker.

@Cheza her first ability is too weak? TOO WEAK??? First of all, look at chandra nalaar, her first only deals 1 damage to only 1 person. The first abilities of planeswalkers aren't supposed to be earth smashing, then there wouldn't be any need to have a final if the first ability is just as good.

And you built black decks that can't use her?

1. you can't use black lrn2playblack
2. you didn't make a proper discard deck for her (megrims her specters etc.)

And her final comes too late? Ya, because you killed her or your opponent with the cards you already discarded.

I love Lili in my BlackBlue control/discard deck. Lots of counters, Doom Blade to eliminate any threats to her and give me more creatures to bring back with her ultimate. I like Contagion Clasp and other proliferate spells to help this along.

Then sometimes I don't even bother with that and just use her for the tutor ability, get Necropotence and win that way.

I don't think this card will be makeing a comback in M12. but I belive this may because they have plans for her in innistrad. for those of you who don't know innistrad is the next set in magic (after M12) it is out in october (or september?) and the art showed liliana on a fancy chair, unfourtunetly I belive it means sorin will be taking her place in M12. I think Vess will be back (or even Vess 2.0) in Innistrad's Block. I know it's grasping as straws but they've found a Vess deck (along with others) hidden in DotP 2012's files. Meaning it will probably be unlocked in an expansion (i.e. after or just before the next set). There are also cards we have never seen before in these decks, 2 in Vess' deck. The art and flavor both follow the 'dark' theme of the new set.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking but it all seems to point in that direction. That's just my speculation though.

This is what i want to see in her when she becomes 2.0. I want her to be 2BlackBlack , 3 loyalty counters.

-1 : Cranial Extraction / Memoricide

-2 : Tutor -- Search you library for a creature card, put it onto the battlefield. Then the drawback would be "at the of your turn, you lose the game." Pretty much wicked for Putrefax / Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon.

-X: Damnation / Emblem that is like Grave Pact then "sacrifice all creatures you control".

Lol...Too much to ask for? XD

Liliana is absolutely terrific, but she isn't like some planeswalkers where you can just slip her into a deck and use her regardless of the cards around her. You need to use her as your starting point, and build your deck to her strengths.
I run Liliana in a discard/necromancy deck. Her +1 will get your opponent squirming if paired with Megrim or Liliana's Caress. Her -2 is brilliant, but not without fault: If your opponent has any cards involving milling, your tutored card could easily be lost before you get a chance to draw it. However, since anyone running Liliana should be building their deck around her anyway, you should always keep a Duress ready for when you use her tutoring. Then you can see if they've got a milling card handy, and if so, make them discard it. Again, brilliant with Megrim or Liliana's Caress.
Her -8 is brilliant, with the right combination. It only really works when your opponent has a creature-heavy deck, but in that situation, the best sequence I've found is to play Liliana, -2, tutor Life's Finale, +1 or Proliferate Liliana up to 8 or 9 (All the while allowing your opponent to build their defenses if necessary), play Life's Finale and use the -8 to hoist that wonderful undead army to its feet. Flawless Victory.

@netog121, yes, you can use her +1 if your opponent has a hand. It doesn't force you to discard (though you can if you want to) - It just means Liliana gets one more loyalty counter without any effect.

This is a exemple of how well balancied a Planeswalkers most be.

Not to strong, not to weak, and most have a nice synergy that don't win the game for you, instead, help you to win, alongside with you, as partnership. And that's it, that is what magic is all about.

I am not fan only of the character (she really kickass in the novel), but of her card too, she is just too nice because she is very well balancied. Something that she can be proud of, and something that just a fell Planeswakers have accomplished. =3

@ sorin688 - really? liliana can come out as early as you like with cards like dark ritual and lake of the dead (granted that ones hard to come by). You could have her out first turn. You could have enough loyalty for her last effect by turn 4. Combine her with ANYTHING with deathtouch, or a death baron, and you got a nice little army there. I like liliana. Been looking for her for a while now.

Ehh, first off let me say, I love this card. It is my favorite of the original planeswalkers, and being a player that loves extraction and discard decks, I can truly appreciate a lot of what she has to offer, but her first ability is simply too weak. By any standards. Second ability, better, but the fact she costs 5 and you don't get the card to your hand somewhat sours the party. And her ultimate ability, why are they not dead by the time you use this? The absolute earliest this card can hit the board in standard is turn 3 (if you're ramping with green) and it would take her 4 additional turns to be able to use it. Those are absolutely perfect conditions, and using cards that you will never see in a discard deck. You're also hoping your opponent doesn't take a few swings at her. So no, you will never use that ability with any kind of consistency.

Now I've seen some comments of here say things like "if you can't use her then you're not making a proper discard deck."

Excuse me? Maybe you're the one playing black/discard wrong. And if you are actually winning games with this in your deck, then I can promise you that any discard/extractor based deck I can make will completely wreck any players you are playing against.

Ways to keep this card balanced, and slightly more usable.

The first ability to force a random discard, that way they can't just discard something they don't need. This wouldn't override any of the other abilities, mostly because the others are so different from this one.

Second ability, there's nothing really wrong with this. Black is commonly played with blue and blue has tons of draw. So you're essentially fixing your draw and that's always nice.

Her ultimate, keep it somewhat the same, but give them haste abd exile them at the end of the turn. Essentially she would unearth all creatures in all graveyards.

The new liliana has been spoiled
+1 every player discards a card
-2 target player sacrifices a creature
-6 separate target players permanents in one pile, then that player chooses one of them. Then they sacrifice the rest

Liliana Vess is, without a doubt, my favorite card. Put four of Liliana's Caress in your deck. Liliana's -2 ability, used a couple of times, will allow you to get out all of them pretty quickly. Then use her +1, making players discard for -8 per turn. Couple this with a few Megrim, and it is quite possible to make players discard themselves to death with one use of Lily's +1.

The only reason to NOT use this card in EDH is that you aren't running black. That first ability can be great but her second ability is AMAZING in EDH. And if you get the last one off...Jesus.

Many people seem unhappy that she can't do more for a discard deck, but I think Liliana's true home is a reanimation deck, where she can live up to her title of "Grave Witch". All three of her abilities help this decktype to some degree.

1st Ability: If you use it on yourself, it helps pitch fatties to the graveyard for reanimation. After you pitch your fatties, you can use her ability on your opponent to catch up on card advantage.

2nd Ability: Reanimation decks love tutors, as they need a very balanced mix of fatties, ways to get them in the graveyard, and reanimation spells.

3rd Ability: As rarely as this goes off, it pretty much guarantees you the win if you pull it off in a dedicated reanimator deck. This isn't the main reason to use her, as some believe, but it sure is nice if it resolves.

Of course, Liliana is a little on the expensive side for a reanimator deck, but it's perfectly vIable in casual, especially when you have Dark Rituals to help power her out.

Her first ability helps to make enemies/allies, her Second ability lets you fetch that piece that you need(Which is super important in Commander) and her last ability(Although I never have used it. I always just plus so I can ruin peoples hands then use the second so I can fetch what I need) pulls everything from the grave that I spent the whole game killing.
