When I first saw this card in the spoiler, I was like "Meh. Too expensive" and just skipped over.

Man, was I totally wrong about this card. I mean, sure, it's expensive as hell, but once it resolves you gain a LOT of advantage, even if your board positon sucked. Three permanents doesn't seem like much, but it makes all the difference in the world. Just play this card, you'll love it. A solid 4,5/5 from me. :)

if there are 3 targets when you cast this card. it will hit the stack obviously.... but if in response one of the targets leaves play. the card rechecks..... and should fizzle am i correct or not.?

You would be incorrect good sir you would need to make all 3 targets illegal in order to fizzle so its no use. Great card destroys land and pesky enchantments/artifacts/creatures.

Solid card overall, I was running two of them in my Jund deck, but I ended up removing them due to mana cost.

Kinda overpriced, but a great card if you can cast it.

I was playing online one day and this guy lost a creature to my Grim Poppet.
He "yelled"' "YOU'LL PAY FOR THAT!!!" The he dropped a Violent Ultimatum.
I used Sharuum to return my Grim Poppet and killed him shortly after.
Long story, short Violent Ultimatum is a good card for killing things harder to return
from the graveyard.

I like how the other Ultimatums are reasonably complex and strategic, whereas the Jund card may as well just say "Blow shit up." Barbarians.

I like what zulp says. Haha :D

Seriously I find violent ultimatum a game winner. Since we are talking red here it is not hard to set up a Pyromancer Ascension to have the effect copied.

GGRRRBB - Destroy 6 target permanents. YES PLEASE!

Btw it combos VERY well with Vengeful Rebirth *winks

flavor text is cool, awsome art, great to play with.
yeah yeah BBRRRGG of mana cost but in the right deck with the right mana acceleration it can come down as early as my fifth turn :).

i cant remove anything from a land to a planeswalker :)
if you cant afford Maelstrom Pulse this card is not a bad deal!!!

Why is this card so overcosted and weak? With all the powercreep Wizards is printing, they could have at least saved some for this and Clarion Ultimatum and Brilliant Ultimatum. "Destroy all permanents", maybe?

If it just said four instead of three, this could have been great.

@ TheTraitorKing

In most cases, destroying 3 is better than destroying all. Destroying 3 will be more than enough to swing the game in your favor. Destroying everything doesn't really help unless you have some kind of combo ready.

If you think this card is weak, you've probably never played with it. It saves me almost every time I use it. I can kill a powerful creature, a planeswalker, and a crucial land or nasty enchantment with one card.

@GrimjawxRULES: I think a better play would be to cast Duress on your 4th turn before you cast Violent to insure your oponnent won't be countering it. But I also follow your logic of doing the extra 3 direct damage on top of your attacking Goblin Guide. Continue the mayhem with a Curel Ultimatum next turn and a super pumped Banefire for the finisher on the next.

Also, I just figure a way to produce 8 mana on your 3rd turn. Here it goes.

Turn 1: Forest, Birds of Paradise
Turn 2: Verdant Catacombs (do not sac on this turn), Lotus Cobra
Turn 3: (This part is tricky and long) Cast Khalni Heart Expedition using your forest and Birds of Paradise. Then play your land for the turn, which will be another Verdant Catacombs. This will add 1 mana to your mana pool from the Lotus Cobra and put 1 counter on Expedition. Then sacrifice both Catacombs to put into play a forest and a swamp, this will add 2 more mana to your mana pool from the Lotus totally 3, and put 2 more counters on the Expedition also equally 3. You can now sacrifice your Expedtion to put into play 2 lands of your choice. This will add two more mana from your Lotus totally 5 suspened mana, and you have a untap forest and swamp. Tap both your lands and use 1 from the corba to cast Harrow. Pull two lands and that will add two more to your mana pool from the Lotus. You now have six suspended mana of any color of your choice, you also have two untapped lands, which you can choose to complete whatever spell you have in hand (Violent Ultimatum+Duress or Cruel Ultimatum+Duress etc...) Its a pretty fun deck to play, specially when this goes off. Which is 00.01% of the time, but still there it is.

Simple way (not terribly standard legal) turn 3 Violent Ultimatum-
Turn 1- Forest, Llanowar Elves
Turn 2- Swamp/Mountain, anything that costs BGG/RGG
Turn 3- Mountain, Tap Swamp for Dark Ritual (BBB), use 1B and tap Mountain for Pyretic Ritual (M11) (BBRRR), tap Llanowar Elves and Forest (BBRRRGG) for Violent Ultimatum, destroy all lands opponent has.

In theory destroying a permanet costs 3 mana, so destroying 3 for 7 is cost efficient, as well as being taking one card instead of three. I find this card is good if your opponent has problem permanents that you need to deal with, but most of the time I would prefer lavalanch or disaster radius for the same price

It's RRRBBGG and looks terrible.

'cause the dominant color of the shard goes in the middle.

A healthy source of card advantage for the growing planeswalker. Except for the hideous mana cost, but the same can be said of the rest of the cycle.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
You know, I always thought this Ultimatum was a little over priced.

Then I realized, relatively speaking it's like casting 3 Vindicates for 1 card. Vindicate x 3 = 9 mana and 3 cards, so the Ultimatum isn't actually overpriced at all.

With that cost it would have been ok with destroy 4 permanents . .
I love the flavor though . .
Words are waste of time . . Destruction is a language everyone understands.

2 mana is a good deal to save you a card. This saves you 2 cards. So if we compare this to 3 vindicates (1WB), already a great card since it can be ANY permanent, this would cost 11WB (13 CMC). Your 3rd destroyed permanent isn't as good as the 1st destroyed permanent, and this has no colorless mana in its cost, but 7 colored mana is still a good deal.

Heck worst case scenario hit their nastiest guy and 2 lands, setting them back a turn or two.
Sironos
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Yo dawg, we heard you like vindicate, so we put in a double vindicate in your vindicate, so can vindicate twice while you vindicate.

7CMC for a triple vindicate is very nice indeed, don't underestimate this, it can do wonders. Raw power at its finest, though I prefer cruel ultimatum, i have this in my jund EDH, and it can really wreak havoc when it goes off, as it really tilts the game in your favour.

Perhaps not as powerful as Cruel Ultimatum,
but it's fun to imprint this on a Panoptic Mirror,
and Vindicate 3 permanents per turn without worrying about mana color.

It's not as omnipotent as Time Walk in the Mirror,
but it's oh-so-fun to erode your opponent's standing by three permanents per turn.

Awesome art, too.

Definitely not terrible given that it targets any 3 permanents (if Vindicate's effect is awesome you can't deny that this effect is awesome) - but at 7 mana, a 3-for-1 just doesn't sit well.

I think out of all the Ultimatums, this is the one that benefits the most from being cast before turn 7.

Fucked me over in limited once, not rly a competitive card tho bc o the restrictve mana cost and popularity of shroud and hexproof mechanics. See Maelstrom pulse for king of removal in this block.
DoragonShinzui

Expensive? Yes.
Worth it? Oh hells yes. This spell gives you major advantage over an opponent. Troublesome creature? Dead. Nearly fully charged planeswalker? Dead. Just feel like reducing their lands to rubble? Dead.
Hell, if you were some sorta idiot, you could scrape the pacifisms off of your creatures! Now that's versatility.

Between Garruk Wildspeaker, a mana creature, and dual lands of various kinds, you can get to this T4 without much trouble. If you do; you probably just won.

alas!

this is ONLY a three for one, and therefore merely on the level of Ancestral Recall (that's a Power Nine btw, mkay? :P ) if you cast it without paying its mana cost. (Good Advice for getting Good at Magic quickly: Go right now and find 10 ways to do that in Gatherer without asking for help. I'd start with Red and Blue :) ...)

CRUEL Ultimatum, however is a ........o.o

|+3| of your cards

|-3| of their cards

|+1| your creature

|-1| their creature

and then how many cards do you think a 10-pt. life swing is worth? 3 Lightning Bolts? 1 Drain Life? 1 Black Spell and 1 White Spell? 4 cards because it can be so swingy, taking you from Losing the Game badly to Winning it badly?
======================================================================

Let's say it's approximately between a 10-for-1 and a 12-for-1.

Even at 9 for 1, that is 3 times better. XD

Ancestral Recall might be better in Vintage than either of these because of it's mana cost, but I think Cruel is playable in Vintage if you cheat it, and Violent probably is not worth that much trouble.

t1 Forest, Arbor Elf
t2 Mountain, tap the lands for Fertile Ground enchanting the forest, which you then untap with Arbor Elf, playing another Fertile Ground
