The original, comboable Niv, who seems to also have a retractable neck for some reason.

I really wished they got Todd Lockwood, the guy who illustrated Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius, to do this art as well. Now they hardly even look like the same dragon.

Very awesome art. I wish they saved this art for the dracogenius.

@Parallax- Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker is a Mythic, so he has that. Not a big Niv fan, but he's a pretty cool card. I've actually been thinking of creating a Grixis deck with Niv and Bolas in it.

I'm not a huge fan of this artwork for him. He looks a lot less intelligent and more like your typical red dragon. His effect is awesome though, and it's game over when you drop Curiosity on him.

@Parallax Original Nicol was printed before mythic rares were a thing. Same goes for original Niv.

He doesn't look like a crazy, half-insane dragon in this art, and has no flavor text (despite ample room). 0/5.

@DragonsRCool: No way, he just looks like a regular dragon in this art, whereas in the dracogenius one he actually looks like a genius.

Wait, so if I really wanted to, I - with this out - could force draw my entire library with something like Blue Sun's Zenith and kill off my opponent? /trollface

so does that mean you can have the two different nivs? like, the legend rule says that it they have the same name, and they don't. it's slightly different.

I am a new player and was playing with my experienced friend the other day and was able to land Niv. Then I drew Curiosity and decided you know what I can draw two cards if I put it on Niv. So I did. I then used Niv effect to draw two cards and my friend was debating about that being a weird loop. So then he checked online and found that it was basically an infinite combo (but you can deck out of course so it is not truly infinite) --> 1 damage for every card you draw I won basically LMAO !

Still no Curiosity comments in this page? Odd. By the way, run this with Curiosity. Pings one or two opponents to death (depending on the size of your library) then draws you a million cards to deal with the rest.

Nicol Bolas hates that Niv-Mizzet is a Mythic and he is not.
@PinkleDadandy: um. yes. I knew that. I autocarded to Nicol Bolas, not Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, and for a reason. He's been around since before EQUIPMENT were a thing. He's been around long enough to be in formats legal with Moxen in Standard, I *think*. Once upon a time he was a decent thing to do in Vintage at least- there was a combo with Animate Dead out there, back when that card was playable in such formats as well. He's 45,000 years old. The Guildpact is only 10,000 years old. Niv-Mizzet's entire lifespan is very likely less than Nicol Bolas'.
THAT is why Bolas wants to be a Mythic Rare.

Niv-MIzzet, the Infinite Combo. I named my kid Niv-Mizzet because of him. He is pretty curious.
For {R}{R}, your Archivist gets +3/+3, flying, and deals 1 damage to any target each time you draw a card? Kind of worth it, I guess.

You can have both Niv-Mizzet's on the battlefield, similar to both Mikaeus, Glissa sunseeker/Glissa, the Traitor, you can have both on the battlefield at the same time, They REALLY need to fix that
Great Fun (when I control him) likes Browbeat hates pesky Notion Thief stealing his ideas! Fun deck. Edit: play him with Bident of Thassa to make all your attacks that get through draw a card!

I like the new art, although I'm not sure if it's really necessary for cards like this. It looks more different from the original art than the one of Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius.
Admittedly since he's about to spit a fireball, you'll be more likely to associate him rightly as his Firemind incarnation.

As soon as I got one from the duel deck, I immediately recognized the true value and picked up 4 curiosity. Perfect combo, insta-kill and draw as many cards as you want? Yes, please! LOVE THIS!!!

As long as you have more cards in your library than your opponent has life, Curiosity is a win condition here.

While the new art is a far cry from the old, I still like it. It looks great in foil. I don't know why they omitted flavor text this time since there's plenty of space for it. I own and play with both versions.
My personal favorite combo with Niv is Mindmoil + Dream Halls or Omniscience. You can cycle your hand indefinitely for free resulting in near infinite damage from Niv.

Originally, both niv and nicol were rares. They were both printed before mythic existed. Also, FTV and DUEL DECKS 'mythics' arent true mythics

Where Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind truly shines is as a Commander. Fill your deck with cards like Timetwister, Wheel of Fortune, Windfall, and Winds of Change and you will be doing a lot of damage for very little mana. And in Thought Reflection or Consecrated Sphinx and you have a ridiculous amount of draw and damage.
My personal favorite combo with Niv is Mindmoil + Dream Halls or Omniscience. You can cycle your hand indefinitely for free resulting in near infinite damage from Niv.
Besides Curiosity you can use Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, and Mind Over Matter for the infinite loop.
