This card is so well designed. It looks fantastic at first glance, then you reread it and think about it and it looks terrible, then you think about it and realise there are actually loads of ways to turn the supposed disadvantage to your favour. Kudos to the designer.

Wouldn't Vision Charm work better just due to the fact that it's protected for one round before you attack? I mean, it's the same concept, except your Phyrexian Dreadnought is phased out until you next untap step.

OH! Stifle and this card is just sooo cruel! A turn-two 12/12 trampler!!! It makes Black Lotus look like Boggart Forager. :O

I agree with Stygimoloch. It's a very creative card. They just don't make cards like this anymore. Looking back at old cards, I'm realizing that they are just exhausting old ideas. I wish I had started playing earlier!

okay an even easier fix other then stifle would be pithing needle yes stifle fixes it the first time but how mean would it be if someone momentary blinked it or used turn to mist on it first turn pithing needle second turn Phyrexian Dreadnought or since sol ring is just restricted in legacy now why not do em both on the first turn unless they are running force of wills they will prolly fold right there
Mill_Master
★☆☆☆☆ (1.8/5.0) (2 votes)
I use 4 of these in my Legacy deck along with Stifle and it works every time unless my opponent has force of will but my force of will usually takes care of that. As for the Dark Depths and Vampire Hexmage combo. you can't put a second one into play because of the legend rule. And how exactly do you get out the Dark Depths and the Hexmage out on turn 2, its a land. Without Fastbond you can only use Exploration or Azusa Lost but Seeking, and I don't think you are getting out all those things by turn 2.
LeoKula
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (1 vote)
Take it easy, Mill_Master... the combo works pretty well, you can EASILY do that by turn 2 PLUS Dark Depths can't be countered, which makes the combo more consistent than Dread+Stifle, plus you sac the land when counters... and then Grim Discovery... gees...

Wow!

★★☆☆☆ (2.5/5.0) (3 votes)
Yeah, @Mill_Master, I agree, most decks won't be getting those out by turn 2(2 swamps out your first two turns), but it IS possible, and for a 20/20? One turn isn't a very big wait. As far as Grim Discovery to do it again, yeah, you could. The token isn't legendary, the land is, and you sacrifice the land when you put the token into play. So, just use Grim Discovery to pick the legendary land out of your graveyard, play it again, use Hexmage's ability again, and voila, 2 Marit Lages.
Lateralis0ne
★★☆☆☆ (2.6/5.0) (4 votes)
@ BDragon123:

Dark Depths labels the token Legendary. Remember to carefully read the cards before commenting on them.

As for Turn 2 Marit Lage, it's fairly easy:
Turn 1: Play Dark Depths
Turn 2: Play Swamp, cast Dark Ritual, Play Vampire Hexmage with 2 floating (no mana burn; let the third fizzle), sac Hexmage to target Dark Depths, and presto! Turn 2 Marit Lage. No haste, mind you...but that's a turn three swinger for 20 flying. Not bad.

But yeah...back to the card this thread's on:

Turn 1: land of some mana-producing type. Play Sol Ring, Play 2 Dreadnoughts, sac one to the other. Since they read "enters the battlefield" and then the ability triggering, it strikes me that you can sac on to the other, in order to keep on out. Not entirely certain if this works...but the logic seems to be there. Corrections/Comments?
s0phocles
★★★★☆ (4.1/5.0) (5 votes)
@Lateralis0ne

You couldn't do that because you can't play phyrexian dreadnaught at instant speed. The first one's trigger would have to resolve before you would be allowed to play the second.
Ragamander
★★☆☆☆ (2.8/5.0) (2 votes)
This is one of my favorite cards ever...so good that a deck built around sidestepping the comes-into-play trigger can still be insanely powerful. My card of choice to pair with the Dreadnought is another personal favorite, Pandemonium.

@s0phocles

That's why Flash was mentioned earlier. But I have a quicker solution.

T1: Land, Aether Vial.
T2: Dreadnought, Dreadnought in response to the trigger. (Note that you can still play a land this turn, allowing for something like Reckless Charge or Mass Hysteria/Concordant Crossroads.)
T3: Fairly probable win via Dreadnought-to-the-face pwnage.

Two Dreadnoughts, an Aether Vial, and a haste spell/enchantment. Overall, fairly manageable. If you accept a one-turn delay, then you've got access Tutors that can pull you a single missing piece of the combo (likely the Dreadnought). Worldly Tutor if you're missing a Dreadnought, Enlightened Tutor if you're missing the Vial or Crossroads. Even without haste on T2, you can just Berserk on T3. Heheh.

Not as good as Stifle, but if you have a Cranial Plating in an artifact-heavy deck, a 12-power creature is easy and quick to come up with (Plus, for 1 mana more, you can put the cranial plating on the Dreadnought for a likely 1 attack win).

@Mill_Master:
Turn 1: Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
Turn 2: Dark Depths. Tap both for Vampire Hexmage
Opponent's end step: Sacrifice Hexmage and make a token.

Then you can play Grim just in case your opponent bounces your token or something.

The Dreadnought's "enters the battlefield" is a TRIGGERED ability, not an ACTIVATED ability. The best card to use with this is vision charm because it has 3 choices. Used in combination with volrath's shapeshifter and psychatog in a deck. Allows a second turn kill with a proven backup win condition. JMO

Odd that the Oracle text says "sacrifice" when "bury" means "destroy the creature, it can't be regenerated" (at least as I understand it). Going by the original wording, it seems as if it would've comboed with Withstand Death. Correct me if I'm wrong...

This is on the reserved list. so was Phyrexian Negator. be GRATEFUL for the rest of your lives that Development went with Obliterator instead of Dread-er-nought.

MaRo: Hey, you know what would be uber cool?
Development Guy: (does not trust that LOOK) ....what?
MaRo: How about a Phyrexian Dreadnought that cost a BLACK mana instead of a COLORLESS mana, and had infect and made your OPPONENTS sacrifice instead?
Development Guy: Get the fruck out of my office.
MaRo: But you can only play it in mono-black!

(I do not believe MaRo would actually support such a card, ever,
but one could theorize he wanted Infect 'pushed' a bit, to make it 'relevant'.
and thus Magic almost broke.)

This will NOT be reprinted in New Phyrexia/Mirrodin Pure, or in any other set, deck or box, it's on the reserve list.

@Wanderer25
Bury did not mean "destroy and can't be regenerated", it literally meant "put into owner's graveyard", when they updated the rules and removed bury, most of these got changed to destruction effects because they were offensive, in this case it's meant to be a cost, and thus was changed to a sacrifice.

@tavaritz
Bury typically translates to that NOW. Prior to the removal of bury from the rules, there were no indestructible permanents, so the issue never arose. In this case, bury was clearly meant as a cost to be paid for not sacrificing the requisite 12 power, and since at the time there was no way to survive being buried, it functioned exactly as intended.

Rules revision with the intent to keep the card working the way it was originally designed to work, that's what happened here, and with a number of other examples of bury used in this fashion.

Actually, indestructibility dates back all the way to the beginning. At the time, the rulings were that indestructibility did not protect against something being buried (such as by Fissure), but that if a land with Consecrate Land were animated, it would protect it against having its toughness reduced to zero. Of course, the rules have since been changed a lot ("bury" now is a kind of "destroy", and zero toughness is not a "destroy" effect any more), and it's now the reverse.

Assuming but one land per turn and no acceleration whatsoever,
O Mighty Dreadnought, how do I break thee? Let me count the ways.

Ways to make a Dreadnought:
T2: Stifle, Mask of the Mimic + any creature
T3: Torpor Orb, Renegade Doppelganger, Trickbind, Sundial of the Infinite
T4: Cackling Counterpart, Voidslime, Dimir Doppelganger, Cytoshape + any creature
T5: Mirrorweave + at least one creature, Humility + any enchantment removal (noncreature source)
T6: Riku of Two Reflections
T7: Dual Nature, Wild Pair

Ways to make something roughly equivalent to a Dreadnought:
T4: Mercy Killing
T6: Kresh the Bloodbraided
T8: Hamletback Goliath

Ways to make good one-time use of a Dreadnought:
T3: Renegade Doppelganger, Fling
T4: Soul's Fire, Electropotence, Cytoshape + any creature
T5: Pandemonium, Brion Stoutarm, Mirrorweave + several creatures
T6: Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Keldon Battlewagon
T7: Warstorm Surge, Sword of the Ages, Bloodshot Cyclops
T8: Stalking Vengeance

And I'm sure there'd be more, especially if we were to allow two specific cards in addition to the 'Naught, instead of just one.

Played this to PERFECTION once on my opp's T4 or T5 and ALL I sac'd was an Elite Vanguard and spent a total of 4 mana! With a Shimmer Myr and Elite Vanguard on the field, I Block his Leonin Abunas with a Righteousness and then (like I just royally F'd up), say- Oh crap! And quickly played a giant growth. My opp laughs awkwardly and says OK, way to go, yah.. now he's REALLY dead or something like that (thinking I goofed up). I continued to play along with it for a sec to make it look like I screwed up double and said CRAP!! Dude, I seriously thought Righteousness gave my guy +0/+7!! Can I pleeease take back my Giant Growth?? He says hmmm well.. You tapped your Forest already.. THAT I could easily forgive.. BUT, you took your finger off the Giant Growth and that I cannot (chess rule, ha ha ha..), spell played, nice kill bud! And then moves Abunas to the graveyard. Smart@ss.. Still playing along, I say you know what, you're Absolutely right, fairs fair (obviously he's just ***ed for attacking and losing Abunas), I say- I'll tell you what, I'm just gonna sac my Vanguard.. Again my opp laughs awkwardly- Haha what?? Yah, this Stupid Dreadnought dude says you have to sac a creature or creatures with power totaling 12 and since I have 1 forest left and this guys cmc is 1 and I have a creature with 12 power, guess I might as well just play him now while I can (sad face).. ***ED, he scoops and says you're a POS Con Artist!! Then I'm all- Nooo.. Come on now, I just paint a BEAUTIFUL picture!! It was SOO classic! I'll never forget it :)

Strange to think of anything Phyrexian working for the Greater Good.

(That might be the best card draw engine in the game of Magic, actually. I can't think of any other "draw 12" spells for 3GreenGreen or even 3BlueBlue, and this guy's triggered ability uses the stack, so it works. It's even repeatable if (1) you can bounce the Dreadnought from your graveyard to your hand and (b) you need 24 cards. Sheeeesh.)

@ redgolem -- yes, but only if you are allowed to cast Phyrexian Dreadnought at instant speed. The enters-play ability resolves before you are able to cast any non-instant-speed spells, such as a second Dreadnought. To use your trick would require giving the Dreadnought flash, or something like Aluren.

These are the reasons why I love this card...

1) It is BIG! Really really BIG! Bigger than THAT!
2) It tramples.
3) It costs ONE GENERIC MANA.
4) It has a specific drawback, and I love the old fatties with drawback! Moreover, the drawback was already bypassable when it came out.
5) It is Phyrexian.
6) It is a gargantuan insect-like machine that is about to devour a mage trying to stop it with a ridiculous spell.
7) It creates LOTS of BIG effects. I post here some of them sorted by mana cost.
- For 1 you have a 12/12 trampler (Torpor Orb or Illusionary Mask)
- For 1 you deal 12 damage to any target (Pandemonium or Warstorm Surge)
- For 2 you have a 12/12 trampler (Sundial of the Infinite)
- For 1Blue you have a 12/12 trampler (Stifle)
- For 1Red you deal 12 damage to a player and gain 12 life (Brion Stoutarm)
- For 2Blue you have a 12/12 trampler (Trickbind)
- For 2Red you deal 12 damage to a player (Fling)
- For 3Red you deal 12 damage to opponent (Electropotence)
- For 2BlueBlue you have a 12/12 trampler (Volrath's Shapeshifter)
- For 2BlueBlack you have a 12/12 trampler (Dimir Doppelganger)
- For 3Blue or BlackBlue or Black you have a 12/12 trampler (Cemetery Puca)
- For 3BlueBlue you sacrifice all opponent's creatures and have a 12/12 trampler at the end of turn (Reins of Power)
- For 3GreenGreen you gain 12 life and draw 12 cards (Momentous Fall)
- For 7Red you have a 18/18 (Hamletback Goliath)
- For 6RedRed you have a 5/5 with haste and deal 12 damage to any target (Stalking Vengeance)

I think this is enough...

An interesting card back in the day, far more powerful now with so many ways to bypass the drawback. What I find interesting is that the Dreadnaught does NOT sacrifice itself if you fail to meet the conditions - instead, it just destroys itself without possibility of regeneration. It's not really important given all the other ways around it's drawback, but it's just an odd example of how cards worked back then.

Not the best combo, Leyline of Anticipation and 2 of these.

End of their turn, flash in 1st one. Ability gos on the stack.
Flash in 2nd one, ability gos on the stack, eat the first one.
Then the 1st ability resolves and you chose to bury, and it fizzles.

Then your turn, draw, place another island, swing for 12 damage. Pass.
Their turn you counter any response and win.

Instead of golems, constructs, gargoyles, thopters, juggernauts, etc, I believe a whole tribal set with dreadnought as the artifact & maybe Dimir or Golgari colors could be good for the game. Maybe like leviathans, this type will have versions with both flying and not. I like the idea of a combo creature type with zombie...But I'm just rambling now. What would define what the dreadnought type is? This card. What would one that costed 2 or 0 be?

Even if you ignore all the ways there are to "cheat" it into play, you can still get this guy out by turn 3 or so. There are plenty of creatures with 3 power for one mana (Cinder Wall, Slumbering Dragon, Torpid Moloch) so you can have 3 total power on turn 1, 9 on turn 2, and 12 (with two mana leftover) on turn 3.

Dread naught, 'cause this card ain't scared of anything.

One of the most badass cards in Magic. That might be the Timmy speaking, though.

Having been on here so many times and with so many cards to keep track of when deckbuilding, I ended up making an excel database (out of frustration) to show which creature cards work best, given their mana/ability/p-t values, and factored in card ranking from here. Many many thanks to your inputs.

So yes, by far the best one drop result was THIS crazy beast. The sacrificial cost is entirely irrelevant.
At a whopping ~1150% value, followed by Mother of Runes at a distant 527%, it goes to show CMC cost for value is well recognised. Of course, increasing the {1} to {2} to factor in stifle, which results in half the original score, it is still higher than that Mother.

As for 3rd and 4th places, they were Delver of Secrets at 339%, and Vexing Devil at 325%

As for the others in their CMC tiers -
Best {2} drop: Qasali Pridemage @ 160%
Best {3} drop: True-Name Nemesis @ 176%
Best {4} drop: Phyrexian Obliterator @ 173%
Best {5} drop: Baneslayer Angel @ 166%
Best {6} drop: Wurmcoil Engine @ 138%
