Oh great! Not only am I staring down the barrel of a 10/10 indestructible, permanent-annihilating monstrosity, but now I can't do anything about it.

I love how the minimum power is exactly the same as the "weakest" Eldrazi. Wizards just dragged Subtlety out behind the shed and shot it.

Which, as a Timmy player, I greatly enjoy.

Useless. It's an anwser to an answer. Before I want this card in my deck, I just want another threat.

This card bothers me in that it's so hard to keep eldrazi out of play after a certain point already, and then they give them free counter spells to make it harder. That seems a little unfair, but thankfully wont do anything against a day of judgement.

I have a hard time seeing a card like this seeing play in a format that will always also have the far-more-versatile Vines of Vastwood. Vines can also save your tiny mana-accelerants to ensure you drop your Eldrazi ahead of schedule, and it can also pump. And we all know that green is going to be in an Eldrazi deck, so just ignore this card with its weird name and move on with your life.

Free counter, for when you need it most. If people are voting less than 4 on this, they don't understand the card and what deck it goes in. Oh btw, I'm running 2 of these and 4 Vines for those who think this is a replacement for Vines.

@coyotemoon: And what about when you're holding a hand of 2 vines and one of these, and no Eldrazi? I'm working on an Eldrazi deck and I can barely find room for 2 vines. You need to make sure you have enough actual threats (and ways of getting them out) before you worry about protecting them.

Does this work against counterspells? I wouldn't think so, since at that point it's still a spell, not a permanent.

This card is seriously underrated. I run 4x of these in my UG Polymorph deck, as It's essentially FREE protection for my win conditions (Emrakul, Ulamog, Kozilek, Iona). It stops commonly seen answers like:
- Path to Exile
- Maelstrom Pulse
- Doom Blade
- Oblivion Ring
- Journey to Nowhere
- Into the Roil
- Jace, the Mind Sculptor (Unsummon ability)
- Gideon Jura (Assasinate ability)
- Ajani Vengeant (tap-down ability)
... and many more.

Moreover, I can occasionally hardcast this card to protect other permanents (made much easier with Eldrazi Temple and/or Eye of Ugin). For example, it can stifle a Tectonic Edge to save a Temple or protect Jace TMS.

I think using 2 of this card with kozilek works best. When you cast kozilek and draw your 4 cards its a great free counter spell to be drawn and cast to keep your big buddy on the field long enough to atack with that anniliator 4.

it counters anything targeting your permanents, so it's not meant to just save your eldrazi, but your planeswalkers or that critical combo card. the cmc is already colorless so you don't need mana commitment, and then giving it for free as a secondary ability just makes it even sweeter. yea it's costly, but not a problem in rise or vintage. 4/5

This card does not stop oblivion ring. It targets after it's already a permanent, basically it's an enchantment with an "enters the battlefield" ability (or what used to be CIP). You can't counter o-ring with this card!

This is, as far as I can tell, incorrect. The card clearly says "Counter target spell or ability that targets a permanent you control."

Oblivion Ring is not a spell when it targets, correct, but it is a triggered ability, which would be a perfectly legal target for countering.

I think this card would have been infinitely cooler if it said "If targets a spell or ability that targets a creature you control, costs X less to play, where X is the power of that creature", although it's still really funny to see this outside an Eldrazi deck.

Pretty epic card... at first glance. But the mana cost is sure to deter most from using it over blue counters and/or Vines of Vastwood. Sure, it can be used in any deck. But a 7 mana counter-spell is not something most are willing to book a slot for - even for the sake of late-game creature-only defense. Making this card cost 2 or 3 mana and only counter abilities could have helped it see more play. A kicker ability could have then been added that countered spells that target creatures you control with power 7 or greater.

EDIT: I broke my cards out of the box yesterday to wax nostalgia and my wife gave this a try. She never had to leave mana open to protect her Eldrazi, primarily right after summoning it. While your opponent won't hesitate to use removal against your annihilators, this will always leave a sour taste in their mouth when they spend White for an easy exile and your creature brushes it off like an slight annoyance. This should have been named Insignificance. Good card. I'll give others a test before I open my mouth next time.

The art is very... not of this world. I'm not sure if the pink is suppose to be a protective membrane or if the burst of energy being reflected is the source of color. Either way, this might just be a printing error. Perhaps Wizards was aiming for a more red-colored version of what we were given and something went wrong at the print. The world may never know.
The pose of the Eldrazi gives a sense of disrespect and feign of interest, similar to Jace's Duel Deck Counterspell, which is very nice and adds a great sense of power to the card.

Powerful but highly situational.

Could imagine it in a green ramp deck with a bunch of fatties, though (I mean, next to the obvious Eldrazi deck).

The countering of abilities is very nice.

Question:
Somebody targets my kiln fiend with a doom blade. In response, i cast 2 instants making his power 7. Then can I cast this to counter the removal spell for free?
If I can, that kick's booty!

Awesome, and not just for Eldrazi.
There are 164 cards with power 7 or greater as of today when I searched gatherer! That's just the number of cards with a power 7 or greater printed on them; this card can also be used for free if it's protecting a creature whose power has been modified to equal 7 or greater.

@kalinack:
Yes, that works. Players get priority after a spell or ability resolves, so after Kiln Fiend's triggered abilities resolve (but before Doom Blade resolves) you will get a window of opportunity to cast Not of this World for free.

This card would have obviously not been overpowered at a regular cost of 4 or 5 mana, and I can guarantee you a card like this would never cost 7 mana under normal conditions, but the creative team made a requirement that all colourless Eldrazi cards had a minimum mana cost of 7. Not that it matters much, since you should almost never hardcast it, but an interesting fact nonetheless.

This card is fantastic late in the game, while Vines of Vastwood is nice for protecting small but important creatures early on this lets you use all of your mana to drop your game enders. Most players wont expect you to be able to counter removal AFTER you're tapped out.

@WhiteyMcFly
Well, that depends. At first I thought you meant regular combat damage. But then I realized you could be talking about something that is throwing damage as an ability (Like Cunning Sparkmage with Basilisk Collar). If that was the case, then yes. He could be targeting the ability throwing the damage, not the deathtouch itself.

But maybeyou meant what I orginally though (Say Glissa, the Traitor blocking a Sun Titan.) Then absolutely NO, there is no way that this could stop deathtouch for the same reason that Shroud/Hexproof doesn't stop it. Deathtouch does NOT target. One of the conditions this thing hinges on is that the permanent is being targeted by the ability (or spell) that you want to stop. The word 'target' is no where to be seen on deathtouch. This much I am 100% sure.

Honestly, I don't think you can even stifle deathtouch anymore (it use to be a trigger, like old-lifelink). I think with the recent changes, it works on state based effects like lifelink is now. So it can't be responded to in the same way you can't Giant Growth a zero toughness creature before it dies. That would mean the only way to stop deathtouch is to 1) remove it from the creature (Turn to Frog) or 2) remove the creature. Please, someone, correct me if I'm wrong though.

Your opponent has Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre on the field, but you just drew your last Path to Exile, and he doesn't even have any untapped lands to counter it with!

Here is a question for you magic the gathering gurus. Alright so I had a 2/2 creature out and an ogres cleaver artifact on the battlefield. I equipped my 2/2 creature with the ogres cleaver which is +5/0 artifact. Making my 2/2 creature a 7/2 creature. Here is the catch my 2/2 creature had an enchantment on it I think it was the enchantment "prison term" - enchanted creature cannot attack or block and it's activated abilities cannot be used. If I make my 2/2 a 7/2 w ogres cleaver and cast "not of this world" - counter target spell or ability that targets a permanent you control. So my question is does "not of this world" counter "prison term" the enchantment? More over is that enchantment constantly targeting my 2/2 creature or has it become a parasite that sticks with him beyond being classified as a spell or ability which targets my 2/2 creature? Note: the enchantment has 3 abilities.

@Jackisback510:
Enchantments only target when they are cast. You would have to cast this spell in response to the enchantment in order for that to work. Also, as a side note, I don't think you could cast this in response to Prison Term's reattach clause, because it doesn't target.

Works for many Demons*, works with pump/firebreathing creatures, etc.

Notable creatures include:
-Hunted Horror
-nova chaser
-Shivan Wurm

and probably the meanest of all non-eldrazi?
Demon of Death's Gate

Why would I say that? Because he's free to play and easy to get out T2 or T3. The fact that your opponent may have to spend 2-3 removal spells on him *before* you use a reanimation spell is pretty brutal.

I think anyone who hardcasts this deserves some sort of award.

@Jackisback510:
No, you can't counter something that is already on the field. You can destroy the enchantment, but you can't counter it after it has been cast.
