Its versatility is what makes it so great, especially the fact that it stops triggered abilities.

I like that the mana cost is GUU or goo.

One of the best counterspells in the game. Like jhjohns said, you could replace the rules text with "nope."

Excellent card. Cancel is more flexible, but in a G/U deck, this is way better. And super fun!

I think this can stop abilities like storm. Tell your opponent "You get only get your original"

This is the hardest counter I know of. It stops everything cold. This offer a lot of potential with creative thinking and countering the right ability at the right time. You can lead an opponent into some mean traps with this.

Good counterspell, very flexible and definitely better than goddamned Cancel.

Well I really like thie versatility of this counter... enough that I always make room for one or two in my Tezzeret's Vault deck... it just stops everything. Sure the casting cost of three is rather expensive for my deck (relatively to others cards that are into it) but how many times did this one saved me from losing a game or allowed me to completely screw my opponent's combo... Moreover, this card is almost never completely dead.. at almost any moment during a game you can find a use for it. Be creative :)

Did you really say cancel is more flexible? This is slime, for crying out loud. Replace the generic mana with green and you get so much more versatility. This is why bant charm is so good---it can do a lot of stuff.
I keep hitting Random Card and getting this I need to get a playset. Or a life. Lol

@CatsAreCthala

I think that what Champion_Kitsune meant is that the added green mana cost makes it more restrictive in terms of which decks can use it.

"I think that what Champion_Kitsune meant is that the added green mana cost makes it more restrictive in terms of which decks can use it." -CatsAreCthala

Between the decks that can use it, none of them should, Daze, Force of will, and stifle are all better choices.

So awesome, UG is the most fun to play. I've always liked it and I've hated cancel ever since Time Spiral. 5 stars, damn straight.

@ everyone

In Chamion_Kitsune's defence I think by flexibility he meant the decks it could fit into so every one stop giving him a hard time as he's right u just don't understand him.

Saying Cancel is more flexible because it has a generic mana instead of green is a gross and bizarre assertion made by someone who has clearly never heard of Counterspell. ANYONE who mentions Force of Will is clearly a counter-snob and should stop power-gaming in a harmless children's cardgame.

I love this card, and only wish it wasn't so good it broke the Dollar-Rare mark. The flavor text makes me hope it gets re-printed as a Tribal Ooze though.

Puts an end to all that "doing things" nonsense your opponents were thinking about.

Haha, I love thinking of this card as like, a pile of slime that suddenly springs to life and engulfs a creature like "mmm magic WHAARGARBL" and your opponents dude is screaming and shrieking for someone to get it off him

On another note, I'm almost disappointed every time I look at the card because I just wish they had made it a 0/0 creature with flash, that had the countering as an ETB trigger. It would fit the flavor text perfectly.

I use this in my blue/green deck along with Venser, Shaper Savant and Time Stop. I love all three of these because they stop some of the most impossible shenanigans in this game.

Are Planeswalker abilities considered activated abilities? In that case, could this stop a planeswalkers ultimate as the opponent would gloatingly cast it?

@IshubarashI: They didn't have Flash tech at the time, so it would've been too long. I hope they reprint this like that!

MechaKraken: "Are Planeswalker abilities considered activated abilities? In that case, could this stop a planeswalkers ultimate as the opponent would gloatingly cast it?"

Yes they are, and yes it can. They remove the counters as a cost, though, so those stay gone. Just the effect is absorbed by the ooze.

And seconding the person who said this should've been a 0/0 Ooze with flash. I mean, then it'd get shut down by Humility, but I DON'T CARE.

Basically the BlueGreen Counterspell that can effect creature abilities

.... I just relized, this says "If you aren't tapping it for Mana, I can counter it" :o

IshubarashI - 0/0 with Flash would have been interesting...turn reanimation into counterspells if you can get them off at instant speed.

Also: "It slimed me!"

Between this and Wall of Denial, you have "Obstruct target creature," and "Prevent target action."
Not bad for a couple of 3-drops.

Another cheer for the "GUU" cost! I love this baby, and just about everyone that plays me hates it. This is my favorite counterspell in the game. This will shut down anything in the game. (Honestly, never counter mana abilities, counter whatever they do with that mana!) Nothing like being prepared!

And once you cast the first one, just set aside 2 untapped islands and forest with one card, any card from your hand really, face down on top of those lands.

Especially fun in multi-player games as one of the players eyes will always be staring at that stack of cards.

Very powerfull counter indeed. As noted - on stack, only uncounterable and spilt second cards can dodge this.

Oh what could've been. 0/0 Flash would have not only been able to toy around with the handy dandy Graft mechanic, but all sorts of instant speed reanimation effects would suddenly become counterspells. Even if it removed the "Activated Abilities" clause.

Counters Birthing Pod, Anihillator, Storm, Iona (because you stop them from choosing a color), Kiki-Jiki, Planeswalker abilities (cast on a Jace in crash mode and laugh), and pretty much everything else relevent in any format. A powerhouse, especially since most people forget this card exists due to its odd color combination. Used properly, this card will hose a deck for 3 simple mana. 5/5 stars, and I wish I could give it a 6th.

Probably too much to ask for a reprint in Gatecrash. I think the best we can hope for is either is something similar the way Call of the Conclave imitates Watchwolf. I'd be happy to see a variation of this on the new Simic Charm.

@typezeroserodin

Voidslime does not work on Iona, as her ability is static, and not triggered. You can tell this because it uses the word "As" rather than "When". You need you counter her, or else her ability will simply resolve when she does.

I love seeing universally useful cards (like Counterspell/Cancel) get another card stapled on that isn't QUITE good enough to earn a slot in most decks, but is still useful.

Voidslime here is an excellent example of this. It's hard to justify running Stifle (except maybe sideboarding) despite what it COULD do, cause there are just too many decks it does nothing against. This card though? For the price of a colorful cancel, you can still do all the counterspelling you love, but have an unexpected answer for all those little abilities your opponents forget can be countered.

That being said... Render Silent is still my favorite counterspell of all time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure this counters Emrakul, The Aeons Torn...

...

...'s "When you cast..." ability. It's a triggered ability going on the stack, and not Emrakul itself. (and of course any of the "when you cast..." abilities of cards.)

Counter target spell, activated ability, or triggered ability unless its controller pays Variable Colorless
If a spell is countered this way, exile it instead of putting it into its owner's graveyard.
If a permanent's ability is countered this way, activated abilities of that permanent can't be activated this turn.
Its controller can't cast spells this turn.
. . . .

I can dream, can't I?

Actually, I'd rather see:

90% it is a counterspell that forces you to be careful what you tap.
1% In a Bant or Simic deck, the {g} won't let you cast it.
9% It is unexpected, shocking, game-changing and awesome.
