If you underestimate the power a mercy killing holds i'll tribal you any day.
First of all it is a creature removal, ok so not a Great creature removal but still if there's a god sire on your opponents side let them have the elves.
Secondly it's a instant speed elf generator. let's pretend there about to trash your jagged-scar archers then why not throw a mercy killing at it and have a small elves army ready for your coat of arms to pump up.
I am defending this card because it has saved me games mostly when combo'd with a heedless one or wirewood pride .

Turn your drove of elves into one of these, and watch your opponent tremble!

With the new M10 rules, this card aint so good. But I think that this card is supposed to be used on your own persist guys so you get elves! Maybe hit your Woodfall Primus, and then remove the -1/-1 with a Medicine Runner.

In a token deck put Fallen Ideal in one of your creatures. Sacrifice all the tokens, us this and have TWICE the token that you sacrificed. ^_^

This card is amazing for one reason above all others. Creature kill in green.

Ok, please tell me why I pulled this card and Rhys the Redeemed in a pack yesterday. Awesome stuff! I am definitely going to use this card. And in my green and white elf deck I have a few heavy hitters I can let go for a bunch of these that I get to double next turn. I'll gladly sac Primalcrux or Terra Stomper for this beauty
this and Joraga Warcaller is a fantastic combo, you sac one of your 5/5 (or more) elves, and that elf become FIVE 5/5 elves!

This works wonders with 2 Joraga Warcallers and an Immasculate Magistrate on the field. I'm talking infinite tokens with Infinite Power and Toughness. Use I.M.'s tap ability on one of the J.W.s and their ability will bounce off each other, eventually becoming infinity. Then sacrifice one with mercy killing, and voi'la!! Of course, this is probably only acceptable in friendly play! xD

Oh, how I love these in my elf deck... Sigil Captain in play, attack with your largest creature, such as Altar Golem or Drove of Elves, for distraction and possibly some initial damage, Mercy Kill the poor thing when it's outlived it's usefulness for the turn, drop Wilt-Leaf Liege and tap Oran-Rief, the Vastwood (or a couple of them). Suddenly, the board is full of 6/6 (or larger) pointy-eared abominations.
I play red/green and i could make use of this car to a certain point. Oh you have a 13/13 Trampler, well now you have 13 1/1 elves, well not anymore, pyroclasm.
When not enabling combos, it is a great mono- green kill spell

Use with decks that prefer huge ammount of weak tokens rather than huge creatures, like with the Convoke ability. Additionally, it can be used to save your creatures from destroy target spells.
If you're also playing with Red, you can use those cheap X/1 creatures that gets sacrificed at end of turn like Elemental Appeal and Ball Lightning
Mercy Killing and Bloodseeker. It's like a slap on the wrist to anyone trying to build up a monstrosity.

Well, it looks like your Darksteel Colossus is not really a huge metallic titan, but a large colony of elves. And I have just the tools to fix that, where'd I put my Hurly-Burly?
I love this card in my elf deck. Works very well at giving me a lot of elves if I control a pumped joraga warcaller and some other elf in play or can turn something threatening that my opponent has into mostly worthless 1/1 elves.

Really like this card maybe for its duel-functions. you can use it on either side of the board - your own creature in response to your creature being targeted for death and dodge it to have a bunch of 1/1's instead of nothing. or you can remove any creature effectively, even one's that could otherwise regenerate or indestructible card which is hard to find anywhere. and hey, with Muraganda Petroglyphs out, a 5/5 elephant from Call of the Heard "Mercifully Killed" yields you.... 5 3/3's. Fun.

Good thing it's an instant, so you can use this with undercosted strong creatures that have an upkeep drawback - which would in fact make it a mercy killing, since they would have died anyways; possibly a slow and painful death. Sheltering Ancient makes a good shelter for five Elf Warriors. Phyrexian Soulgorger's soul can get gorged for eight Elf Warriors."
A Sigil Captain can promote you all of these. You can also grant them an Elvish Promenade to Oran-Rief, the Vastwood. If you let them visit Voice of the Woods, they can call his best friend together. Priest of Titania will gladly join them as well. Once she's there, i'm pretty sure a lot of others will follow: Where she is, there is mana. And where is mana, there is action!
It's cool that it's a sacrifice effect. Bring down even indestructibles!

Helpful in many cases. It works well with any deck that pumps up elf tokens IE saccing a 30/30 elf (normally a 1/1) with coat of arms, saccing it, getting thirty elves, and turning them into 59/59 elves. useful much?
Sacrifice target creature you control: Put more than enough number of green and white Elf Warrior creature tokens your opponent could ever manage to block. Then deal damages to him or her equals to the power of the sacrificed creature multiplied by three.
"There is no kill like overkill."
Also a great Remover against Indestructible, or after your opponent declare blocker in front of your Tramplers.

Back in Shards era, I ran a jund token deck in FNM using this card combo'ed with sprouting thrinax.
Lets just say that the people running B/W tokens crapped themselves when they would try to Path to Exile my Thrinax after it hit them a few times and i would respond by Mercy Killing it, getting 6 tokens for 3 mana and then next turn dropping Furystoke Giant for the win.

Well, you could use it to "counter" a doom blade, or combo with cumber stone / new jace.

Combos hilariously with Phyrexian Dreadnought, netting you twelve 1/1s for the low low cost of . A distant honorable mention goes to Phyrexian Soulgorger, which gives you eight 1/1s for .
This is a fairly strong alternative to putting a single 12/12 in play Dreadnought/Stifle, which can be chump blocked each turn and dies to Path to Exile. There just aren't many decks that can react profitably to a dozen-creature assault. Thing is, nobody's ever tried to assemble Dreadnought/Mercy because storming into Empty the Warrens for six is easier (same cost, one fewer card, and you can play it earlier if need be).

I know what the flavor is supposed to be, but I can't help but imagine a bunch of elves bursting out of the creature's belly, Alien-style.
Board: Thunder-Thrash Elder that devoured 3 creatures (9 counters)
I break open the Thunder-Thrash Elder on the board with Mercy Killing, then cast the Thunder-Thrash Elder in my hand, devouring all 10 of the 1/1 tokens (30 counters)
Result: 31/31 Thunder-Thrash Elder from a 10/10 Thunder-Thrash Elder for 6 mana and 2 cards

Owned this card forever, bought it solely for instant speed Green removal. I've since built many decks and this got brushed under the carpet.
But one day, looking through my collection, I noticed one little word on this card. "Warrior"
So say your just swung with your Keldon Marauders, whose a 4/4 because of bramblewood, now you cast mercy killing on it, and you get 4, 2/2, almost certainly unblockable elf warriors.
Next turn, you can swing for atleast 15 unblockable. and they won't even see it coming because your a pro and casted it during their end step.

On paper, this is one of my favorite kill spells for my Karador EDH deck. I'd love to see someone have something big and indestructible out and I have this and a board wipe in hand. Or this and an It That Betrays on the board.
"Hey, that's a nice Avacyn you have there. Why don't you just sacrifice that for me?"

One of the cards that this is really promising with is Cathars' Crusade. Every single creature you control will be stronger than the one you sacrificed.

Mega token overload. It's so so wrong but it feels so right.

By sac-ing Autochthon Wurm, you'll have a standing army at the ready, all in a moment's notice.
And it's all good if you have Tolsimir Wolfblood as your Commander...
