If your opponent is attacking you with lots of weenies, he won't really care if you block a single 1/1 since your wall won't be around next turn. You'll also feel like your wasting a strong defensive creature if you don't kill something with 2 or 3 toughness. Granted, it does work as a deterrent when your opponents can see it on the board, since some people are willing to trade their 1/1 for yours.
