It's essentially Fling for 1 mana more that doesn't kill the creature.

well, this might seem like a stuipd question, but would the opponent be able to block this? considering the card says "target creature you control in play deals damage..." so is that considered combat damage from the creature or just an instant?

west789: No, you cannot block this spell, because you are not in combat. Therefore, is it also not considered combat damage. If you use Soul's Fire using Mirri the Cursed, then Mirri will not get the +1/+1 counter because this spell is not causing her to deal combat damage. If you use Brion Stoutarm, however, you will gain 4 life because the spell is causing him to deal the damage.
If, by block, you imply "counter," then yes, you can counter this spell with a counterspell and no damage will be dealt.

i use this in my behemoth deck and can easily get in seven damage with it on turn five. the most i've ever done with it is sixteen with my apocalypse hydra.

Great card for Standard R/W decks. Dropping this using your baneslayer makes it a Super-lightning helix. 4/5

I think i will get more copies of this card soon. I run a major life gain deck with Ajani Goldmane as my main man. After using his avatar. Pop this card and thats usually game.

It can potentially do a lot more than most other cards, the only weakness is that you have to have creatures in play. Play it with a creature that can get 10+ power like a hydra, or with soul's might, and 2 of these can drop an opponent from 20 to 0, and as an instant so even if its a blue deck you can wait until they use up mana during their turn and then blast them. It -does- work with abilities as well, like wither, death touch, lifelink, etc.. It also works with colossal might and giant growth. Some other potential killers are lord of extinction with this, or a vampire nighthawk. Not everyone seems to realize that if you can play it on a 5 power creature your really getting a huge spell for only 3 mana, and if lord of extinction is in play or a mossbridge troll, it can be somewhere upwards of 25 - 35 damage, and that's not in make believe magic land where crazy 5 card combos always happen, but in regular magic games where you either have a lot in your graveyard or at least 15 power worth of creatures, the latter being fairly easy for a naya deck.

a lot stronger than some spells, except it needs a creature requirement. 3.5/5

Personally, I use it in a casual devour deck to make sure my mega-boosted creatures don't just get chumped. Thunder-thrash elder and this make for some fun, and it works especially well if they're pacifying creatures instead of removing them.

Here's what you do: Righteousness + Soul's Fire = +7 damage and hopefully a dead attacker.

Cunning Sparkmage + Basilisk Collar
tap, kill that angel
cast Soul's Fire, kill that other angel

same deck:
Plated Geopede + Adventuring Gear + Basilisk Collar
Arid Mesa, sac for a Mtn = 9/9 Geopede
attack, deal 9 to opponent (or kill chump_blocker), gain 9 life
cast Soul's Fire, deal 9 to opponent, gain 9 life

I actually consider this superior to Fling, not because of the sacrifice, but because it's the creature that deals damage and not the instant itself. That has a lot of potential, particularly with Warren Instigator, Charnelhoard Wurm, Akki Lavarunner, specters, Deus of Calamity, lifelinkers and deathtouchers in a pinch, the list goes on.

Glyph of Destruction is still the most awesome combo I've seen mentioned. All you need is a Wall (or Changeling).

Sarkhan: Get over here for a second..
Baneslayer:??
Sarkhan: good bye AHAHAH!!
Baneslayer: what the ...!!!!!!!!

so this makes Threaten very usefull :D ....it targets itself! , nice card!

Trowa, Soul's Fire has a target creature you control deal damage to target creature or player equal to it's power, protection states that it can not be dealt damage from a source if it has protection from it.
So Baneslayer still wins. :\
On the other hand, swarming your opponent and then laughing after you play this is good, too.

This card is great in an affinity deck. Any creature with Cranial Plating attached is a fantastic target for this card.

In a multiplayer game, works wonders with the always chump-blocked Lord of Extinction.

Could I use this or fling on an un-championed Nova chaser, before the lack of championing kills it?

In affinity and other decks it is a toss-up between fling and this card. Fling doesn't work well against counters (FOW, daze etc.). However, it does work well against removal (swords, exile etc.) This card has won more tournaments than fling. I find fling to be situational, and this slightly better.

I only just realized that this is essentially Fling, but without having to sacrifice.

Was playing a 3-way magic duel with a couple buddies the other day. One of them decided to play an Emrakul and I hoped to not receive the attack from him on his consecutive turn. That flying puppy on the extra turn swung at me for 15, killing me, due to my lack of fliers and then said, "wait, I cast Soul's fire on my the person I didn't attack."Vanquishing him as well.

Awesome card, 4.5/5 So much potential

@Jesseman: Emrakul's 'Pro Colored Spells' means that he can't be targeted with Soul's Fire. Better luck next time.

It would take Ajani/a Johnny to use this card.

Already said, good with infect. Also good with lifelink.

I'm very reluctant to replace fling with this. The extra colorless may not seem like much, but an unexpected turn four win from a soulstoked Nova Chaser is worth losing the creature, especially if you champion Flamekin Harbinger. Also, if you're looking to deal double damage with an unblocked attacker at instant speed, Double Cleave is almost always better.

Isn't the "on the battlefield" clause redundant?

One of my favorite cards. I like to use it with stigma lasher, especially in response to someone trying to kill the lasher.

It works great in my R/W deck, where I use Scourge of the Nobilis. With that card on even a boros recruit, it makes Soul's fire into an instant speed superior Fireball that heals you equal to the damage you deal. On a larger creature, you get so much bang for your buck that even if you don't pump the creatures power up at all it's still an excellent deal.

I used this as a counterspell in my multiplayer War Elemental deck.
"Doom blade your elemental!"
"FWOOSH"
"Anyone else?"

It can't be cast on Emrakul, as it is a colored spell.
This card, similar to creature enchantments is begging your opponent to 2-for-1 you by killing the creature you target. Fling only has that problem if the spell if countered.
The question you have to ask yourself with this card is "what are the odds that I will have a creature with at least 5 power when I want to cast this?"
The person suggesting mossbridge troll has the right idea since it regenerates for free. Plated Slagwurm is another good target.

My brother played this, and I cast Vines of Vastwood to prevent my creature from being affected. He says that won't work because this isn't a spell or ability, "his creature just hits mine". I say it is a spell that targets my creature for his creature to do damage to. Who is right?
Totema
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@PurpGuy: You're right. This spell needs 2 valid targets to even have an effect, and if one of those is shrouded in response to this, this just fizzles. And if he thinks this isn't a spell, he needs to take a good, hard look at the comprehensive rules.
adrian.malacoda
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@JFM2796: It means that your creature must be on the battlefield as the spell resolves. Meaning if they remove your creature in response to this spell, it fizzles. Normally removing the creature wouldn't stop this spell. That's why that seemingly redundant clause is in there.

@Ashamed, DutchSanta: Flaw? I don't see a flaw. Baneslayer Angel doesn't have any properties that Baneslayer Angel has protection from. It's perfectly capable of dealing damage to itself via Soul's Fire. You'll even gain five life.
@PastProphet: Cunning Sparkmage has no power. Try again.
@Doom_Lich: Yes, Nova Chaser's Champion an Elemental ability is triggered, so it sits on the stack waiting to resolve, and you can cast Soul's Fire then.

How nicely does this fit the Flamekin and to a lesser extent the Cinders from Lorwyn-Shadowmoor? Seriously though, Nova Chaser makes this an absolutely brutal burn spell. A pity Fire Servant doesn't modify the damage since it's dealt by a creature, not the spell itself. Gratuitous Violence is happy to help, though.

@Everyone who says fling is better:
Soul's fire makes the CREATURE deal damage. It works with Lifelink, Deathtouch, Infect etc. so I don't mind the extra {1}. (Plus you are more free to use it at any time since the creature is not sacrificed.)
I will use it with Bushi Tenderfoot in my R/W Battle Cry deck.

Would you consider this worse or better than Fall of the Hammer?
Fall of the hammer is only 2 CMC compared to Soul's fire's 3, but the latter lets you target players as well as creatures.
