This would be pretty scary in an infect deck!

lethalex, it seems that the flail only works with combat damage. Sorry mate, i'm pretty sure fighting is noncombat damage. That being said, it does work well with the obliterator

This is ok. A little bit off-beat flavourwise, since it works best with larger creatures. Best used with first strike, so Elite Inquisitor is a good choice.

Such a fair card if your creature is blocked. Such an unfair card if your creature can't be. Or has first strike. And I love how it doesn't grant double strike, but just double damage. Kind of makes me want to transform my Zendikar Kor tribal deck into a rogue Modern build for some Kor Duelist / Kitesail Apprentice fun.

Every unexpected inquisition's best friend, the drawback is a minor setback because you should be attacking doing double damage with first strike or unblockable

a localized variant of furnace of rath, this card is fun to play and a fearsome threat if played right. Not only is it good on creatures with evasion or first strike (or better yet, double strike), if the creature is blocked it will almost guarantee something will die, either triggering morbid abilities or stocking your graveyard for something nice. No matter what you are going to at worst break even, at best get a humungous advantage, and even if they use removal on your creature the equipment is ready for the next one. very hard to defend against if it is in a properly focused deck.

does anyone know, flavor-wise, what's up with this card? like, what's the story behind it--and why was the text chosen for it (especially the second sentence)?

This card. THIS CARD. Every game it came out in during the prerelease I won. I never saw another person use it! Why?? Limited bomb. Absolute bomb. I'm sure it will get nasty in Constructed too... but maybe not as much.

Since this equipment allows your creature to deal double damage at the cost of making it more likely to die in combat, I suppose you would say that it is a Double Edged... Flail?

I'm trying to imagine the thought process of the inquisitor holding that thing.
"Now hold still, evildoer! I swear this is going to hurt me more than it will hurt you!"

The card itself has some good applications, especially dealing with creatures you know aren't going to take the damage, or have very good reasonto take the damage.

I was down on the ropes against my opponent's big zombies, then I played an Angelic Overseer, with a Human in play. Next turn, I draw and play Inquisitor's Flair, equip it, and swing for 10. I do so again next turn. He didn't expect it.

More elegant wording: Double all combat damage that would be dealt to and by equipped creature.

Much more easy on the eyes.

Invisible Stalker + Runechanter's Pike + Trepedation Blade + Pitchfork + Butcher's Cleaver + Silver Dagger + Inquisitor's Flail + Curiosity + Sword of War and Peace...

Equipment for that guy just seems limitless-- and this flail literally doubles the effectiveness of any offensive equipments you use! Just be sure to get first strike if you don't have some form of evasion.

Terror of Kruin Pass has Double Strike. Part of Double Strike is First Strike. First Strike plus this is NICE. Not having First Strike + this = 'sacrifice equipped creature: destroy a creature of target opponent's choice'. That's good, but....I mean, there's always the chance that a 2/2 Zombie token chump blocks you, deals 4 damage (enough to kill most creatures), and you trade a tank beast for jank.

IF you've got First Strike though, it's a savage beating. If you've got Double Strike AND this, then it's GG.

If you put this on Avatar of Slaughter, then you're a real prick, but you get points for style. :P

A few people seem confused about why the equipped creature receives double damage. It's one of the Inquisitor's weapons and it requires their skills to use it properly (first strike, protection from the enemies you're fighting). Greatly flavorful.

If any of us tried using a flail, we'd probably end up breaking our own arms in the process.

This plus Mirran Crusader = extremely effective is extremely understated. It makes normal creatures have the equivalent of double strike (almost, the first strike is missing), but in the hands of double-strikers, it essentially makes them Quadruple strikers. Better yet, equip this to Phyrexian Crusader. You've almost won in a single attack right there.

While it is definitely part of Elite Inquisitor's toolbox, it ironically works well for the creatures he's fighting. My zombie deck loves them. Since they are swinging in to die anyways, the extra juice this gives them severely out weighs the downside. Then I just revive them and swing again.

Not to mention Abattoir Ghoul (for first strike) or Unbreathing Horde (which doesn't care how much damage is dealt to them). Otherwise, it just makes my zombie tokens into 4/1s, which is fine with me. ^_^

And getting one or two on a Phyrexian Crusader for a surprise infect win is just icing on the cake.

@Eldersage
It's in the rulings on the first page. Each flail multiplies the total damage by two. So two flails would be four times the creature's power. Three would be eight times... etc.

The level of fun to be had with either Phyrexian Obliterator or Mirran Crusader and other strong cards is not to be underestimated. Even creatures without an ability like First Strike (such as Accorder Paladin) suddenly are hitting for six when they would have died from any amount of damage anyway allowing them to trade with things much larger or just taking great wallops out of your opponent's life total.

@RJDroid: of course it was unexpected. NO ONE ever expects the spanish inquisition. Their chief weapons are surprise, first strike, and flails.
Well, sorry, but someone had to say it.

This is one of the coolest pieces of equipment ever, IMO. It's awesome to see how no one cares about its drawback - first strike (double strike being too evil/fun to even mention), indestructibility (yeah, I know that's not a keyword), or just you not caring about your creature's survival. Sure to be welcome in a lot of decks (at least in casual).

This card is great in a Knight deck where many Knights already have first strike. if they don't you can clear the way with Brave the Elements. On Mirran Crusader you can deal 4x damage. Also works great when Knight Exemplar is out because then it doesn't matter how much damage your Knight takes - he's indestructible! Another combo is to have Kinsbaile Cavalier out and attach the Flail to Knight of Meadowgrain. Now your Knight is a life-gaining powerhouse. Great card if the deck is right. Solid 4 out of 5.

This is what it turns creatures power and toughness into (Not technically)
1/1 becomes 2/1 (but can be killed by Little Girl)
2/2 becomes 4/1
3/3 becomes 6/2
4/4 becomes 8/2
5/5 becomes 10/3
6/6 becomes 12/3
7/7 becomes 14/4
8/8 becomes 16/4
9/9 becomes 18/5
10/10 becomes 20/5
11/11 becomes 22/6
12/12 becomes 24/6

As you can see, the only one who officially becomes strictly better (without Unhinged .5/.5s) is 1/1. But, of course, they do really get better than what they were.

My Knight Exemplar + Kinsbaile Cavalier deck approves. Overall Double strikers work very well with this. Also werewolf deck, this and Moonmist should work quite nicely.

And i must say using brass squire to equip it after blockers are declared sure sounds fun.

Not to mention This card is boss with flyers and strikers.

@VampireDucky Inquisitor's Flail and Stuffy Doll, huh?
This isn't such a bad combo even though it won't get any advantage from the card's first ability at all (since it only triggers for combat damage).
So ironically it will only profit from the general drawback, since it still doubles the damage inflicted on itself or from potential incoming attackers, or even burn spells that you might have packed in your Stuffy Doll deck, too.

I think i prefer other cards to combine with either of those two artifacts, though.

When Gisela, Blade of Goldnight comes out, if you equip 4 of these to any one creature and you have Gisela out, that creature will do 32 times it's normal damage!

EDIT: @ JontheRed: It was implied that you could do that.

Anyway, it actually is 32 times the damage, because doubling the damage stacks, so it's 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2. So, with Gisela equipped, that would be 160 damage.

Equip this onto Gideon Jura while he is a 6/6 creature, then wipe most of your opponents creatures while being smug. Or better yet, equip this and then cast Moment of Heroism on Gideon, to be even more smug =)

It's already been mentioned, but Gisela seems like a great fit for this. Her first strike ability keeps the second effect of the equipment from kicking in that often. Oh, and she of course swings for 20 damage with it.

You can also use this to great effect with Spirit Mantle. Now THERE'S a threat.

The best thing about this card?

It works incredibly well with any damage eaters you happen to have (Gloom Surgeon/Phytohydra/Stuffy Doll).

The worst thing about this card?

It's not thematically relevant to any of them. I just can't see total domination in the form of a sock puppet, plant, or doctor beating the sanity out of you with a flail.

For theme decks, Outrider En-kor + Phytohydra, Fatal Attraction + Gloom Surgeon, or Pariah + Stuffy Doll are much more appropriate.

Swinging with an indestructible Phylactery Lich on round four for 10 or 12 damage (thank you Slitherhead) is pretty devastating in my casual group. Also, there hasn't been much discussion of regenerating creatures taking advantage of this thing, like Lotleth Troll, but that ability works just as well for this card as first strike.

Hey Boros Reckoner, you forgot your flail!
Bobth
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Inquisitor's Flail + Assault Strobe + Tainted Strike + Relentless Assault on a Little Girl =

1/2 damage + 1 from Tainted Strike = 1.5 damage
Doubled from Inquisitor's Flail = 3 damage
Second strike from Assault Strobe = 6 damage
Second combat phase from Relentless Assault = 12 damage = 12 poison counters.

Good game. Little Girl one turn win without boosting her Power. That much. Believe you can do it by Turn 4 without too many tricks:

Turn 1: Little Girl
Turn 2: Inquisitor's Flail
Turn 3: Equip Flail, Birds of Paradise or something
Turn 4: Rite of Flame or something, Assault Strobe, Tainted Strike, Relentless Assault

It becomes permanent if you use the higher-cost Fireshrieker instead of Assault Strobe, Grafted Exoskeleton instead of Tainted Strike, and Aggravated Assault instead of Relentless Assault:

Turn 1: Little Girl
Turn 2: Inquisitor's Flail
Turn 3: Fireshrieker
Turn 4: Grafted Exoskeleton
Turn 5: Equip Flail, Aggravated Assault
Turn 6: Equip Exoskeleton, Equip Fireshrieker
Turn 7: From this point on you have a Little Girl waiting around for the chance to kill something in one hit, and if she dies you can throw down another one to equip everything to.

I love how this fits the flavor of black so well, colorless though it may be - yes, for only four mana you're getting double damage, but it can just as easily come back to smack you in the face, and hard. That sort of deal-with-the-devil thing is why I love this card so much in my Infect and Vampire Tribal decks.

My favourite card to abuse this with is Spitemare - although, contrary to what one or two people said here, it doubles the damage, not quadruples, due to the combat-damage-only restriction. Still fun and head-scratchy, though.

Best thing to do with Flailmare, IMO? Well, first: swing it at an opponent. They sigh, and weigh up whether they can afford to take 6 from leaving it unblocked. Maybe they can't afford to. Maybe they resign themselves to 2 in the face and they chump with a 1/1. Maybe they're lucky, and have a wall or something else with 0 power. Maybe they breathe a sigh of relief.

Maybe your hand slips and you just accidentally happen to Righteousness their blocker. WHOOPS. >:B

All aboard the flailboat. Your face must be this singed to ride.
