Yay, he's back. But the artifact block is rotating out! No!

Once the handy dandy darksteel rotates, This guy is going to have a bad time. On the other hand, I love the flavor and it will always have a spot in casual decks.

This is going to be amazingly fun to equip with Ring of Xathrid :)

I really want to build a deck with 4 Racks, 4 Black Vises, and this guy though. Because seriously- a Mono-Black Control deck that DOUBLES as the Tomb of Horrors? Umm, WIN!

Love the 'Doomy 13' in the Expansion symbol :) Look at the whole spoiler list, with special attention to Black and Artifacts- I swear with Nicol Bolas and Tormod's Crypt, someone *deliberately* planted 'Doomy' looking cards because it's Core Set 20 13. 3:D

This card saw almost zero play when it was first printed. It is flavorful but... why?

Anyone noticed that two liches can both survive even if one phylactery counter gets nuked?

@ lorendorky: A couple of reasons that I can think of, probably. The first being that, like Aura Enchantments, destroying the target of the Enchantment (or in this case the permanent with the Phylactery Counter) gets you a 2-for-1, killing both the creature (or Lich) and the permanent with the counter or the enchantment. Coincidently, it's probably not a great idea to run the Lich with Enchantments. The second being that he's hard to run with colors other than black and mono-black decks tend to avoid including a reasonable number of artifacts.

It's not clear from what I wrote, but I love this card. Power/toughness.

T2, Liquimetal Coating
T3, Turn a land into an Artifact, Cast Phylactery Lich putting the counter on the land.
T4, Turn the original Phylactery Lich into an Artifact EOT and cast another one, putting the counter on that Lich.

Loops are fun. The original Lich then makes all other lich's indestructible.

Strange reprint before a multicolored block, but lovely nonetheless.

Use Cloudshift to exile, bring back to battlefield, pop down another Phylactery counter on an additional artifact, makes it a bit more difficult to destroy. AMIRITE???

Mono-black control is looking even better with this guy. Now I just need some good artifacts that could run with this.

Unbelievable flavor on this card - cause, you know, liches and phylacteries (I am getting flashbacks to "Tomb of Horrors" but I'm a grognard).

Anyway, this + Stuffy Doll is nasty.

If you look at the art closely, you can see he has an amulet tied to the end of his staff, presumably his Phylactery. Looks a lot like a Darksteel Relic to me.

How to win turn 2:
Turn 1: your starting hand needs to be swamp, forest, darksteel relic, dark ritual, tainted strike, groundswell, and phylactery lich. Play a swamp, play dark ritual, play darksteel relic, play phylactery lich, end the turn
Turn 2: tainted strike, groundswell, win

He makes me want to create a deck with Darksteel Garrison... Both indestructible and a 6/6 creature for 3cmc..... This could be a very fun card to tinker with.

Kitesail + Lich = Indestructible Voldemort using a kitesail to chase Harry Potter through the air.

Because broomsticks are too mainstream.

T2: Nim Deathmantle
T3: This, putting phylactery counter on Deathmantle.
T4: Equip Nim Deathmantle onto the Lich, swing with your 7/7 indestructible intimidate xD

I have a mono-black deck and I recently added two of these guys to it. I just play casual games with friends, so our decks are constructed of some old cards and some new ones from an assortment of sets. Obviously, anyone with the money to run 4 Mox cards in their deck has a great advantage over their opponent. But even then, when I can manage a 5/5 indestructible out on the first turn, it's a pleasant feeling.

Swamp and 1 Mox Jet to Demonic Tutor for another Mox Jet to cast Dark Ritual to summon my Lich. With the help of Liliana's Caress, another Dark Ritual and two Mind Twists later, my opponent was finished by turn 3. It was a lucky turn 3 draw for that second Mind Twist, otherwise it would have been turn 4 unless he managed to pull something off.

I usually prefer the games to last much longer, with the tide of battle changing sides from time to time, but every once in a while if I can pull off a quick victory like that, it's always exhilarating!

1 wrath o god
2 phylactery lich (phylacteries=tefillin, a jewish prayer device)
3 sheoldred (search sheol, the jewish underworld)
4 preacher

Im on board i guess.

Use Darksteel Axe as a phylanctery, equip it to lich, go to town.

Why hide your phylanctery when you can beat people up with it?

this is a 5/5 with indestructible in black. not green, BLACK. how does this not have at least 4 stars? the original has got like 4 and a half stars, and this ones got barely 3 and a half. what, is a 5/5 for 3 mana with indestructible not good enough for you? yeah, they can 2 for 1 it by killing an artifact, oh no a downside! god forbid we have cards that require a bit of strategy to use. this isnt like trying to figure out a use for Nihilistic Glee where even if you make it work woop de doo it still sucks, this is a powerful creature for a reeeaally competative mana price. and besides, its not that hard to figure out how to use, as like 10 other people have said, use any card with darksteel and they're probably gonna have a hard time, and this all happens by turn 3! come on

Rating differences:
M11 = 4.4,
M13 = 3.7.

This is because M11 not only had some artifact support (Ornithopter, Voltaic Key, etc.) but M11 was followed by the second-most artifact-heavy set since it's ancestor: Scars of Mirrodin.

What does M13 follow? Return to Ravnica: a primarily multi-coloured set.

If they printed a multicoloured counterpart (maybe it was Esper or Jund-coloured) which needed to Phylact a multi-coloured permanent, then we'd be in business.

This card has great versatility. What it loses in having to be chained to an artifact it gains back with its 5/5 attack and defense stats as well as its low mana cost. Darksteel Relic into Dark Ritual Phylactery Lich. That is an awesome first turn play.

@Virde
Or you can liquimetal coating the Lich in response to the enters the battlefield ability. Then put the counter on it. I am my own horcrux!
raptorman333

So when the enters the battlefield ability triggers, just target it with Thran Forge or Liquimetal Coating so it can target itself.

Think I want to pair my set of these up with some Darksteel Brute's. The Liquimetal Coating is a good idea too of course. But my main theme, is to go for a zombie deck. So those Brutes would be pushing it. Mainly, they would be serving a dual purpose, of course.

Darksteel and ol' Lich here might be super effective, but... Hex Parasite will happily take that phylactery counter off your hands :)

You can almost hear the Development staff snickering as they make the last ability read "permanent" rather than "artifact".

Hee hee hee.
