Every blue deck I run ever is going to have to sideboard a couple Turn to Frogs for the next two years, just so I can respond to the activated ability and laugh maniacally.

(And yes, that works; the ability's already on the stack by the time you respond, so it still resolves, bringing your opponent down to 1 life.)

When it says "exchange" does it mean that its toughness also becomes equal to your life?

Funny as hell with Sanguine Bond.

Unfortunately this card does not say gain life. You are setting your life total to a value not gaining or losing life. Although using something like Unsummon could let you reuse the ability even if it is Turn to Frog (if you live another round).

Unfortunately this card does not say gain life.

Fortunately it doesn't need to.

Magic Comprehensive Rule 118.5. If an effect sets a player's life total to a specific number, the player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to end up with the new total.

Turn to frog? Why not Twisted Image to both win AND draw a card. . . I must make this happen.
Atali
★★★★☆ (4.1/5.0) (5 votes)
Twisted Image doesn't work to kill a player, when the Tree's toughness becomes 0, it immediately dies (when state based effects are checked) and isn't there to perform the switch when it's ability resolves.

Thanks to the rules regarding layering, if you put Giant Growth on this card, and exchange its toughness with a life total of 1, it will be a 3/4 until end of turn and your life total becomes 16.

So, run it with Umbral Mantle and Channel to gain unlimited life.

I have no worries about Turn to frog.

In fact, run Turn t Frog with this card.

Hell, run Soul Conduit with it.

So, change life totals, in response to it, turn to frog your own tree then Soul Conduit your opponent with a sly grin on your face as you just put them at 1 Life.

Twisted Image works here. In response the the activation of the ability you twisted image the tree. The tree's ability is still on the stack and the the tree's activator will receive the last known toughness of the tree. (Last known information). This is the same reason why if you dismember a spikeshot elder with it's ping ability on the stack it will deal -4 damage (0) to whatever it's target was. (if it's original power was 1)

From the FAQ:
When the ability resolves, Tree of Redemption's toughness will become your former life total and you will gain or lose an amount of life necessary so that your life total equals Tree of Redemption's former toughness. Other effects that interact with life gain or life loss will interact with this effect accordingly.

Overly Complicated (and expensive) Combo:
For simplicity, let's say your life total is 23
You have Tree of Redemption in play, unused. Use it, and your life total drops 10, Tree is now 0/23. Combine with Tainted Sigil to regain the life lost. Be sure to pay the cost for Searing Meditation to off an opponent's creature to trigger your Glissa, the Traitor, to return the sigil to your hand, then reuse it for a net gain of 10. If you have something which allows you to untap the tree, then you can start all over again! Remember, each time you give some life to the tree, you add 10 more to the sigil. :D

Straight from the Innistrad FAQ:
* If Tree of Redemption isn't on the battlefield when the ability resolves, the exchange can't happen and the ability will have no effect.

Exchange can't happen unless all objects or characteristics are where they are supposed to be. In this case, the toughness of a creature named Tree of Redemption on the battlefied which's activated ability tries to resolve.

@Atali, any ability that will switch it's power and toughness, or otherwise set it to zero, while it will indeed kill the tree, will also kill the player; the effect is on the stack, and since the ability references the card, it will check its "last-known in-play status", which will show the tree as having zero toughness, thus setting you to zero life.
EDIT: I guess I was a little off, as it says "exchange", and in order to exchange, both things have to be their or it fizzles. For some reason, when I first read it, I mistook the word exchange and thought it just set your life to it's toughness each time. The above still applies, however, assuming you Snakeform it or something to set it's toughness to 1. Just hope they can't untap it.

Also, I really wish they'd change the "any ability that sets a life total actually changes it", I wish it were more absolute so it didn't interact with so much crap. I think it's just wierd the way it is.

Suppose I have Tree of Redemption and 1 health .

If you have a you can't lose condition in the board (such as platinum angel) you can sit on your 0 or less life total and switch whenever. Otherwise the game recognizes you as "dead" as a statebased effect. Checking when people and creatures die happens before priority is passed making you unable to even activate the ability.

Ok....If i read the whole "exchange" thing correctly, where if you have say 20 life and activate the Tree's ability you lose 7 life or take 7 damage, can that damage be prevented? If it can combine this with Master Healer and other healer cards and it could get out of hand. Or am I wrong on the rule wording?

Some of the flavor for this card/picture is very subtle, yet beautiful. There's a magnificent 1500 year old tree in South Carolina known as the "Angel Oak" that looks just like the Tree of Redemption. Both are very similar in appearance, and seemingly have corresponding names. Go Google some pictures of the "Angel Oak".

Tree of Redemption plus two Wreath of Geists = bigger and bigger life gains each turn. Not sure why, but the 2 enchantments create exponentially bigger life gains after each use.

@ brunsbr103: Boon Reflection does not work becuase you do not actually gain life, you exchange them...

I actually love this card. Throw a few noxious revivals or reclaims in your deck, and you can actually live through just about anything. And with more than one in play, you can take up to 24 damage in a turn and live.

Does anyone see this along with Feed the Pact as a good idea? I can stay alive as long as I want, then when I am ready, sac for 13 2/2 wolf's and bash your head it.

From the FAQ:
If Tree of Redemption isn't on the battlefield when the ability resolves, the exchange can't happen and the ability will have no effect.

If Tree of Redemption's toughness equals zero, it will go into the graveyard as state based action. That means it takes precedence over anything else resolving on the stack under it. If I {T} and activate the ability, and in response you cast Twisted Image or Inside Out, it'll go on the stack above my activated ability. Your spell resolves, Tree of Redemption has 0 toughness and goes into the graveyard. Then my ability resolves, but the exchange can't happen because it's not on the battlefield and the ability will have no effect.

I hate to see misleading information at the top of the Popular Comments, even if they are funny.

@Mike-C: No, dealing damage to it won't lower its toughness, you're just piling damage on to it (remember dealing damage equal to a creature's toughness destroys it but lowering it's toughness to 0 causes it to go to the graveyard regardless of indestructibility). If you want to do what you're saying, you're going to need to at least -0/-12 this tree. 2 Dismembers would take it down to 3 toughness or 3 Grasp of Darknesses to bring it down to 1 toughness

That aside, an activated Beastmaster Ascension (or any other toughness booster for that matter) plus Freed from the Real would let your life (and by extension, its toughness) escalate by 5 everytime you exchange life with him twice in a row.

If I attached Ring of Kalonia to this thing... Would I have unlimited life??

Ring gives enchanted creature a +1/+1 counter every turn if green... And another bonus which I can't recall ATM.

Life: 20
Tree 0/13

Attached Ring of Kalonia.. Gain +1/+1 next upkeep. So you'd be 1/14... Keep going until over 20 toughness, tap it. Then tree would be 20 and life be 20..

Wouldn't that work???

Another question - when attacking (obviously not this card) but using it as an example - if I were to attack with this card, would its ability still happen??? Or do tapping abilities not work/activate etc when attacking ???

I remember back in a casual game where I had this and two Thraben Doomsayers out with a sizeable amount of human tokens on the field. My friend (who was also running a token deck) swung out with an 8/8 Mikaeus and a bunch of his tokens. Luckily, I had more tokens than him, so I blocked the Mikaeus with the tree, making it a 0/5, and tapped it, giving me the fateful hour boost from my Doomsayers. I still lost a bunch of my field, but hey, I only needed four of them to get through during my next turn. Which they did.
In retrospect, I really can't see how he thought it would have played out any differently, lol.

Door of Destinies, with this, can get pretty crazy. If you are doing a Plant Door deck, Let's say you have 2 counters on the door. this is a 2/15. Swap with your life total of, say... 10, yeah? Because of the two counters, it becomes a 2/12 after the swap. Next turn, if you took no damage, swap your 15 life, with the 12 toughness. This becomes a 2/17. Basically, the amount of counters you get on Door of Destinies, is how much life you gain every other turn, and each counter added by playing another plant is like having a Soul Warden in play. Slow combo but exceptionally annoying if it works!

Mikaeus does not have wither or infect (which causes damage to creatures to be dealt in the form of -1/-1 counters), so at no point does your tree become a 0/5 - it is a 0/13 with 8 damage marked on it. Thus, the life total switch will set your life total to 13 when the ability resolves, not 5.
