This plus Time Warp.

Kiln Devils. The randomness ability doesn't even matter because all your instants and sorceries are going to do the same thing: burn/bounce/otherwise destroy or make unblockable.

Card advantage plus power... seems strong.

Damn, I wanted so badly to run this card in standard, but I just can't make myself. It's fun, and it's not even a bad card, but I can't find a reason to put it in. If Inferno Titan weren't a thing, or if it dodged Dismember, or if it just let you chose a sorcery/instant to put back in your hand as a CIP ability, or if it had some form of evasion, it would easily be able to compete with go-to six drops like Titans and Consecrated Sphinx. But unfortunately, there's little room right now for a 6-drop that doesn't do anything if it gets Doom Bladed or Oblivion Ringed.

I find that really disappointing, because there were so many ways this could have ended up being a competitive card, but it looks like it missed all of them by a hair. It's likely you'll win if you untap with it, but I feel like there are other things that could take its spot that would make you more likely to win.

Part of me really wants the Titans not to get a reprint in M13, just so fun and potentially powerful cards like this one can see some strong play. As it is, Titans affecting the board state just for being resolved on top of being under the curve makes it hard to justify running a 6-drop that will sometimes be traded 1-for-1. I suppose in CounterBurn (my current favorite archetype) it could work as a finisher you drop on turn 8-9, since hopefully the board is clear, protect with countermagic, then use him to do unspeakable things to your opponent. But still, that just seems far less consistent than resolving Frost Titan with his perma-Spell Pierce, using him to lock down the board, and bashing a couple times.

Although I do like moxsmith's Time Warp idea outside Standard. :D And in Magical Christmasland, playing a turn 7 Past in Flames and casting 3 Shocks with Burning Vengeance in play to clear the board of up to 6 blockers before swinging with a 20/4 would be hysterical.

Wow.
Primal Command is pretty evil.
And Plow Under was already a beast to deal with.
Why did I even say that? Rate this a half star to push it to the bottom.

This card is a beast in limited. I played it during the prerelease and abused the lone Dissipate I pulled over and over in several games. When I played Cackling Counterpart on this, my opponent just folded. Twice.

Staggering in limited play. Also widely overlooked - I've lucked into them over and over and people consistently need to have the powers restated, then they sigh or swear and often give up.

Probably not going to win any tournaments with Titans/Dismember in vogue, but high marks on the tier below.

T4 Infernal Plunge + bring out Charmbreaker Devils
T5 Unsummon + bring out Snapcaster Mage, and flashback unsummon. clear the field and swing for 12
if that doesnt finish it.. the red burn will.

and thats just one out of many possibilities. 5/5 in limited, and great at the kitchen table

If I cast an instant (say Incinerate), then cast Reverberate to copy it, will Charmbreaker Devils receive +12/+0, or simply +8/+0 since one of the spells is just a copy? Excellent card by the way, 5 stars for sure.

I simply love how Red and Blue interact with a lot of spells that care about Instants and Sorceries... It's so Izzet style! There are quite a lot lately, specially from Guildpact, Rise of the Eldrazi and Innistrad.

This creature is wonderful. Every turn recursion is so nice, even if random (luckly, because otherwise it can be quite boring) and moreover extra super-pumping on spell casting... This card is so much win! I'd like to own a pair of it to put randomly in each BlueRed deck that I build...

5/5

@EndGamer: "only" +8/+0, because the copy of the original Incinerate isn't "casted", so it doesn't trigger the ability of this creature... Generally Reverberate kind of effect doesn't say "cast", so it doesn't work. It takes something like Eye of the Storm to abuse its "pomping" ability...

This belongs in a land destruction deck. R/G with Bramblecrush and Tectonic Rift. Keep getting the spells back and keep the pressure on. Also, you'll have green to mana ramp. Tectonic Rift basically means you get to swing for 8 unblocked.

Probably a stupid question, but since I'm new I thought I should ask;

If I cast two sorcercies does that mean Charmbreaker devils gets +8/+0 or does it only get +4/+0 once if any sorceries/instants are casted?

The random clause isn't such a hinderance when you exile your Flashback cards to get the instants and sorceries you want, like Grasp Of Phantoms or Time Warp (why not Stitch In Time for giggles, or Cruel Ultimatum to be a b****?).

Going to be amazing with Artful Dodge in a flashback deck in DA. Flashback allows you to take the randomness out of its ability and allows massive pump and unblockability every turn.

I cast two Artful Dodges and flashback. My Charmbreaker Devil is now a 20/4 unblockable. : )

Everyone has mentioned Kiln Fiend but I personally like Wee Dragonauts better because of evasion (but I'm a little biased towards nostalgia). Also don't forget Chandra's Spitfire and Gelectrode for additional lullz with Dminish to clear the board for cheap. And since I'm on the topic of Ravnica, Schismotivate @.@ and Izzet Guildmage.

Step 1: Cast Shock (or Lightning Bolt if you're outside of standard)
Step 2: Activate Garruk, Primal Hunter's -3 and draw 8 cards
Step 3: Did they really let all of that happen?? Wow, you get to do whatever you want now.

@tenthspectre - This gets +4/+0 for each sorcery or instant cast; in your example, it'd get +4/+0 twice (for the two sorceries), so it'd end up being a 12/4 creature.

Actual conversation I had with a friend during a trade:

"Any interest in Charmbreaker Devils for your foom (I call burn foom) deck?" - Me

"Nah, CMC is too high." - Him

Put it in my UR Counter/Foom, dropped it turn four, won turn six.

Love this card.

it was a six way edh game, there i was at one life, just this guy in play with just enough jankery to produce 14 mana, i started my upkeep and knew i had a 50/50 chance of winning the game right here, i pulled the only two sorceries out of my graveyard, i look at the both one is cryptic command, the other is time stretch. shuffle the two around and offer to my friend to pick which face down card i get, he picks one up and slides it towards me. i flip the other and its cryptic command thats going to the yard. i smile and draw my card which is a clone. at this point i cast the clone and decree. i win! everyone looks at me like im just messing with them and point out how im dead on their next turn. i laugh and say "yeah but your going to be dead in 4 of mine" my friend then laughs and says "to bad you dont have three extra turns just lying around"
i laugh and cast time stretch and everyone else at the table starts laughing when i say "looks like i do have some lying around"

I, for one, love this card. Drop a wild hunger on it, then if you're on curve you can flashback it to swing for 14/6 with trample. He makes a big mess very quickly when you get him out. I'd rate it at 5 stars if the iPhone would let me :p

Why even go there... No need for "Devil" creature type. Already pushing it with demons, why do you want to fuel the fire? Make something else up instead.

I got them in a casual two-headed-giant deck, with rise from the grave and flayer of the hatebound. It's fun to play. If someone kills the charmbreaker, you rise from the grave them, and they return the rise from the gave. If they don't get killed, you rise from the grave the flayer. :)

Just you wait until I get back my...
oh, Bump in the Night...
I was kinda hoping for a Sorin's Vengeance.
Well I still have next turn to reoccur my-
Doom Blade.
Good I guess, but can I please get a freaking Sorin's Vengeance!?
Or... a Shock.
:| I guess I can always draw another.

But in all seriousness, this is a great card. 4/5

I love this card because its so effective even with very straight forward play, even in mono-red, pick up a lightning bolt from the grave in addition to the one you picked up? Great, now you can clear a lot of the board in one on one and swing with a 12/4.... alternatively its very versatile in say a Grixis deck with lots of blue and black repeat control as well..

A really powerful effect, and with a couple cards in certain (Fog, Stone Rain, Orim's Chant) this can lead to a nice lock out of the game for your opponents. Just have to make sure "at random" really isn't that random at all by only having one spell in the 'yard.
In fact, this is essentially a much fairer Isochron Scepter

love this card. I try to make sure I have only one good instant/sorcery in my graveyard so the randomness doesn't work against me. Rakdos Return is about my favorite card to continually abuse with the Devils. 5/5

Put 3 of these guys in my R/U casual deck filled with lots of instants and sorceries.

2 Rites of Replication (with special guest, Cast Through Time), a Cackling Counterpart, and a Call to Mind in case I don't get the right spell I wanted back.

Kick Rite of Replication and you get 5 more of these guys, which will retrieve you 6 instants or sorceries so your odds are a lot better at drawing stuff that you want back.

Fantastic card for izzet decks. I can't think of a card that wouldn't be useful to recur. Even if you get something as humble as unsummon then that's still good. With cards like Guttersnipe and Uyo, Silent Prophet, this is just fun/absurd.

Throw in some kiln fiends for additional lols and you have yourself a fun control/beats deck with mostly red creatures and blue control spells. Sleep is a powerhouse card.

Tibalt's duel deck would love this in place of Gang of Devils, too bad they ran out of rare slots. I suppose gang of devils is okay if you want to lose convincingly to get your opponent into magic though, as I once terminated my own Gang of Devils to burn his 3 Spectral Procession spirits, leaving his 4/4 Vampire Outcasts alive to finish me :P

12/5/2011 11:40:27 AM:

Just think-- this with:
Rancor/Berserk/Predator's Strike/Colossal Might/Fury Charm/Fatal Frenzy + Lightning Bolt + Lightning Bolt
or even
Brute Force + Brute Force + Brute Force
or
Djinn Illuminatus + Brute Force or Lightning Bolt + ...

EDIT:
I still don't know how this card isn't 4 stars. It has recursion on the instant and sorceries in your graveyard, giving you extreme combo potential that you can stack the odds in your favor with graveyard removal like Grim lavamancer, flashback cards, or even just holding the cards you pull back into your hand... thus, powering the pump ability. The card combos with itself! To pull out a power of 8 on a 6cmc! Just compare the curve with Kiln Fiend, Nivix Cyclops, Wee Dragonauts

This card really annoys me. it feels like it should be played in a blue/red deck, with Wee Dragonauts, Delver of Secrets, Kiln Fiend, etc. I really want to play it in that sort of deck, but it's just too expensive. that deck wants to be constantly hitting cheap/free cantrips (Gitaxian Probe) to build up the instant/sorcery count before playing a Distortion Strike or Artful Dodge and swinging in for huge amounts of damage. Charmbreaker Devils are just too slow for that. I guess a green/red deck might be able to play it, but i personally don't really like that idea. However, in draft it's an easy first pick and works fantastically in any deck with 12+ sorceries/instants.

Oh, also, as others have been saying, this seems hilarious with Rite of Replication.
