I love this card. More than earthquake and WAY more than fireball. EQ is nice an' all but In most cases this'll hit only them and their board with nearly the same effect at instant speed. And aside from the extra (R) in it's cost, this is strictly better than fireball.
Interesting idea I had, if I were to redirect my comet storm could I avoid the 'another' clause entirely?

Fireball was always my favorite of the X red burn spells, because of its ability to hit multiple targets (it's not often that red gets card advantage). But this is Fireball on steroids. Or possibly super-soldier serum. It's so fun to be able to say "Let's see... I need five mana to kill that one creature that's really annoying me, leaving me three mana... I guess I'll kill those other two creatures, too, and also blast my opponent's face".
Vocabulary lesson, by the way: Comet Storm is far, far better than Blaze: You'd be a fool to run Blaze in any deck, but you'd also be a fool to not run Comet Storm in any red deck if you had it. Despite this, however, Comet Storm is not strictly better than Blaze, since Blaze is a little bit cheaper for a single target. The "strictly" in "strictly better" doesn't just mean "a whole lot better".

No, that would not work, since the targeting restrictions for the original spell still apply. For example, a Redirected Doom Blade still has to target a non-black creature. So in short, if you Redirect Comet Storm, you still must choose separate and distinct targets. Also, remember that for each time it is kicked you MUST choose a legal target.

I wish people would stop arguing about strictly better, with the amount of cards in magic, it's pretty much impossible for a card to be better in every situation. I mean, you could say this is strictly better than Volcanic Geyser but then your opponent has a Redirect. But wait! You have a Spellskite so it's all good.
Tl;dr when someone says strictly better, just take it to mean pretty much better in every situation except for really niche ones.

What is important about this card is its Instant speed. You can use the old Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead combo without having another creature in grave, then just use this over and win :)
many an EDH game ends with "..and then I cast Comet Storm"

I combo this with golbin tokens and mana echoes. All it takes is mana echoes out and a few golbins, drop a Dragon Fodder or similar, and BAM, you can get 10-20 damage to several targets quite easily.

In actuality though, this is slightly better than Nightmare. To do 3 damage to your opponent and 2 of his creatures, Comet Storm will require 7 total mana, while Nightmare (as best as I can tell) requires 8. This is because the first target is free for Comet Storm.

You pay RR to summon one comet. You can spend more mana to adjust either the size of the comet (X) or to summon additional, equally large comets (multikicker).
e.g. a size 5 comet with four targets costs RR (first comet) + 5 (size) + 3 (additional comets) = RR8.
