They have finally printed it: the card that does nothing! Sure, I understand fully that this was intended to pair with Metalcraft, Affinity, or many other abilities that count / interact with artifacts. But Darksteel Relic truly does nothing in isolation. You can now say to your jaded friends who have stopped playing: "Did you hear? Wizards has started to print cards that do nothing!"

I don't like double posting, but something came to my attention. Everyone is flaming hard on this card, let me beat some sense into you.

This card IS NOT WORTHLESS~! Every time I see a comment saying it is, I facepalm. My soul dies a bit on the inside. You get the point. So, what can you do with it?

Some of the already-stated ones:
Metalcraft trigger
Tinker
Affinity
Tezzeret animation
Phylactery Lich

Other uses:
Archbound Ravager? Yes, please.
Atog Bait
Phyrexian Negator (Not like anyone will use him anymore with Obliterator release)
Reprocess
Salvage Titan

You get the point. There are many cards that synergize with this card. Admitably, there are uncommons I would rather see in limited, but outside of limited, I understand the uncommon slot. If it had no indestructablility, I would agree that it is a total piece of garbage. But it has indestructablity. So quit your flaming and trolling. It got old 50 comments ago.

There are very few reasons to use this card over Darksteel Axe (in standard) or Darksteel Citadel (in any other format). Indestructibility is not that important on a card that no one will ever want to destroy. In fact, if they would have printed it WITHOUT indestructibility it would have been a lot more interesting of a card. 1/5

The most surprising thing about the comments are that people say they would be disappointed to get this. As if they open up 14 cards from a booster and this would be the only one they don't like. I like between zero and three of the cards I open in a booster. This wouldn't disappoint me any more than getting any of the other cards I will never use. How do you stay sane if you are disappointed every time you open a booster?!
I love how people complain that one with nothing is a rare. And then they make this card an uncommon, and people complain. Get over yourselves and a enjoy the cards that were designed for your psycographic profile without being upset by the cards that were not made for you. Opening up a trading card pack is like a treasure hunt. You don't get the rush of a great pack without opening packs you consider mediocre. If you only want great cards, stick to buying singles.

Maybe you guys don't see the true purpose of this card. Having a set of Darksteel Relic means you can activate cards that has metalcraft much easier. Put this on Caw Blade and throw in Puresteel Paladin then you can juggle swords infinitely. The fact that it is indestructible means that it would be hard for your opponent to disable metalcraft, because cards that can't use metalcraft reduce their strength by half or even more. With this card you can have metal craft by turn 3 or if your very lucky turn 2 and even 1.

And the mox with metalcraft can be used in conjunction with this on turn 1. A Zero Land Deck!!! How streamlined that could be?? Very focused indeed! Tezzeret can make it a 5/5 critter!! It's a deceptive design guys. Yes it doesn't add mana, boost creatures or grant you three wishes and a trip to vegas. But you know what it can do? Survive. Divine Offering? Useless. Shatterstorm? Pfft. Dispatch? You're really going to waste a good card over a half decent one?

Metalcrafters don't worry about your memnites anymore. Myr Welder, would you like to be indestructible? I thought so. When you think about this some more, you guys will realize its hidden potential.
apollogod
★★★★☆ (4.6/5.0) (8 votes)
@RATZGobbler

Myr Welder gains no benefit by exiling this card. Darksteel Relic has a static ability that makes it indestructible. The Welder only gains activated abilities.

As for the uses of Darksteel Relic, I will be putting it in my deck with Shape Anew/Blightsteel colossus. It will replace Darksteel Axe and make the deck operate a full turn quicker. Very handy indeed.

I rate the card 3.5/5.

Run with Tezz, a 5/5 thats indestructible when all you're spending to get him is some loyalty and a card draw. I like this because it's free to cast. If it was even 1 mana it would not be worth half as much as it is.

A bad card, you're better off running any other 0 costing artifact for metalcraft, or Everflowing Chalice for 0. This may be indestructible, but think about it: If you have 3 artifacts, and your opponent wants to get you off of metalcraft, what does it even matter if one is indestructible? Unless you have 3 indestructible artifacts, only one of them being indestructible means nothing, because they'll just target one of the others.

I guess it earns the half a star minimum I had to give it for working with Tezzeret and the Lich. Still not worth wasting the deck space for.

Plays 'well' with:
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas - makes a 5/5 ind. as soon as he drops. There are better choices though.
Tinker - But then again, so do all artifacts.
Phylactery Lich - I'd rather use DarkSteel Axe, but at least this alllows a T1 combo with Dark Ritual.
Knowledge Pool - Probably the only deck that could be competetive that I'd choose this card above others.

The main problem with this card outside of standard, is that in basically every case, Darksteel Citadel is the better choice by far.

Erik's Random card 6/17/2011
We competed with the Community team for the Erik Friborg Memorial Cup. The community won decisively. If they had lost, the prize was a Darksteel Relic.

This is the story of how I traded Ken Nagle Darksteel Relic for several awesome rares.

I was the development lead for Mirrodin Besieged. Powers that be decided to change the time where MBS takes place in the story. It was moved a bit to the height of the war. This created some holes in the card set. We filled the holes in several ways, including my coming up with some cards and putting them in the file. I was thinking of what was the simplest possible Darksteel card, and came up with this. It was an abstract idea of what other Darksteel cards are made of.

However we were still several rares short. So I told Ken, the design lead of New Phyrexia, that my team was going to look through his set for some cards that we thought would work well in our set. It was the quickest way to solve our problems, but clearly would create new problems for Ken. It wasn't something I wanted to do; frankly shopping from Ken's hard work felt lousy. But it was the best for Magic, so Ken agreed, and we did it. When we were done, Ken looked through MBS. He noticed this card, a card he had also made for New Phyrexia. He explained that this wasn't some abstract thing, it was all thas left of the Darksteel. It would be totally fitting in his set as the sole indestructible card.

Of course I agreed. This wasn't filling any special purpose in MBS; it was just a card. In his set it helped tell the story of the great Phyrexian victory.

I understand the rationale behind this: Even though it does nothing by itself, it fuels Metalcraft, Affinity, and the like. But there are plenty of other 0-cost artifacts that do that just as well, even in standard.

Yes, it's indestructible. But that doesn't really help, since what opponent would bother to use removal on this, anyway? If they've got artifact destruction available to them, then they'll just target one of your other artifacts, one that actually does something.

Unless, of course, they've got mass or repeatable artifact removal, like Shatterstorm or the like. But if you're running a metalcraft or affinity deck and someone manages to pull off one of those, the fact that you've got one useless artifact that survived isn't really going to make you any less screwed.

people who say this does nothing and is worthless need to just stop playing magic because they dont know how to play. sure, it does nothing-by itself. its a combo card. the fact that its an indestructible item thats free to play is amazing in itself and worth playing since you can just drop it the moment you get it. metalcraft is just a small silly example of how powerfull this card can be with combos. try playing agaist legacy artifact decks and throw this in. you'll learn to respect it fast.

Also not sure if anybody ever noticed the relic on the card is about the exact size of your standard glass counter. A foily version of this with a phylactery counter on it with lich on the board just looks purdy.

I had to make an account just so I could comment on this card. Srsly, why is everyone bashing it? This has to be the most flavorful card in the whole Mirrodin Block, alongside Mirran Crusader etc, but still beating it. Secondly, this card certainly has its uses. C'mon, I can't be the only who has ever thought about combining this with Darksteel Juggernaut, Darksteel Axe, Darksteel Plate and maybe Darksteel Myr. Just use some Worldslayer or even better, use Elspeth Tirel's last ability.

Imagine the lulz when it's turn 6-8 and you got a wiped board, and 2 or 3 Juggernauts with 6/6 - 9/9 going for lethal. Dang.

Anywho, I mostly love this card for it's flavorfulness. Easily an uncommon, which I'd love to pick from a booster.

i dont get why people hate this card- its a 0 (zero) mana cost metalcraft enabler. have a deck full of artifacts with metalcraft, drop two of these babys and never worry about losing your metalcraft bonus again- beacuse otherwise all it takes is a rogue manic vandal to cause your etched champion to lose his protection from colours, and make him vunrable to a lightning bolt. or maybe drop a third (again, for 0 (zero) mana) in combo with an Indomitable Archangel for shroud. mox opal, puresteel paladin, dispatch- i am not even trying to find these combos, i just looked at a list of cards with metalcraft. for non metalcraft options, try golem foundry for a free 3/3 token, or cards with affinity for atrifacts, like broodstar- who would be a 4/4 at worst (assuming you have 4 out- and realy, who's going to oblvion ring a 'useless' card). have a little imagination guys, it dosent hurt that much.

It sort of works with Bludgeon brawl, in that it allows infinite targeting combo's (daru spiritualist and task force then sacrifice for infinite life, for example). But Shuko is better for that.

I will find a way to make this a win con. It's like the ultimate Johnny challenge.

Every time I read the flavor text its almost like a solitary tear rolls down my cheek when I remember those who fought, those fallen and their beloved world now lost. Mirrodin, though I only saw you during thy darkest hour, I shall miss thee when I gaze into your troubled past. You shall live on in the hearts of millions. RIP dear one RIP.

What an amazingly stupid, and interesting card. I would love to build a deck around this.

Oh look, its a Darksteel Coaster.

I bet Phylactery Lich has a lot of these lying around his apartment... Along with his Stuffy Doll collection.
