Is it just me, or does he look like Skwissgar Swigelf from Metalocalypse?

Jor Kadeen, taller than a tree.

A lot of this set makes me think that we will still see the Mirrodin Pure set even though Phyrexia "won the war". This guy and Melira being prime examples. Not to mention Phyrexia still not having any planeswalkers since Karn is "released" as opposed to corrupted or Phyrexian.

Plus it sounded like Mirrodin Pure had already been designed as a set so I doubt they would waste that effort.

And this guy seems like a good finisher for Boros on top of the 2 heroes. Its just that current Boros doesn't run artifacts unfortunately so for now I'd say 4. He has potential, but no real place yet like Thrun from besieged.

That...is one darn big human. Seriously, I don't think we've seen anything like that since Magus of the Arena.
Not really much else to say. First pick material, gives you a plan for your entire draft, blah, blah, blah.

Not every legendary has to be central to the story, or even appear in the story beyond a cameo. Sometimes, a creature is legendary because they want an effect that they don't want multiples of on the 'field.

Jor Kadeen is clearly a member of the remaining Mirran resistance, obviously in a leadership role, possibly a field commander. He's not in charge of the outfit (that's Melira), he's not concerned with the defense of the survivors (Melira again), he's focused on striking back against the Phyrexians, fervently believing that they still have a chance to reclaim their world.

I got all that solely from reading the card.

@sarroth and names_suck:
You guys seem confused. New Phyrexia was the original idea for the whole block but it was decided in development that it instead the block would focus on the Mirran/Phyrexian war and the New Phyrexia concept would be held back until the last set in that block. There is no Mirrodin Pure set, it was never designed. It was only ever something that was shown to players as a possible outcome of the war. No cards were ever made to back up the concept. Certainly there is no full set of cards called Mirrodin Pure in a design file in the Wizards back offices. The Mirran resistance however could make some sort of return in the future. Their defeat s starting to look not quite as total as I once assumed and with planeswalker help they could escape anyway.
Hope that helps
Also Ob Nixilix doesn't even appear in the Eldrazi novel, which yes is not really all that worth reading. It doesn't really answer any plot related questions, I was pretty disappointed.
Finally the card looks nice, +3/+0 is a big deal and I'd love to see metalcraft decks finally have an impact.

This guy is just SCREAMING for the General position in an EDH deck. It wouldn't be too hard to do either. Just add Kemba, Kha Regent with some appropriate equipment, along with Stonehewer Giant and Stoneforge Mystic. Toss in a Myr tribal sub-theme with Myr token generation and Tempered Steel. Top it off with Sunforger and an accompanying package, and you've got one hella fun EDH deck. Oh yeah, this guy's gonna be good. 4.5/5

He's awesome with what he has.
He'd be amazing with Battle-cry.
He'd be broken if his metalcraft gave everything else Battle-cry and/or First-strike on top of the +3/+0.

He's just begging to be used in a R/W aggro metalcraft EDH deck.

This creature is insanely good for aggro.. turns on your kuldotha rebirths into 4/1 goblins. Being a giant first striker doesn't hurt either. Great way to end a game with an end of turn white sun zenith.

@tpmanw, yeah what was up with the eldrazi novel.. never resolved anything. I guess the eldrazi are just rampaging around the universe. Also that you are right they never said anything about ob nixilis.

@Names_Suck: How did it sound like Mirrodin Pure was designed as a set? MaRo specifically said New Phyrexia was going to be the first set in the block, and then they decided to push it back to last. That to me says Mirrodin Pure was never going to happen, and was all made as a gimmick.

I really hope we find out what is up with this guy unlike with Ob Nixilix. At least without having to read the books. I don't know if I can bring myself to do that. @Atali: I know they'll slap Legend on a creature as a mechanics issue, but as a Vorthos sometimes the creatures are just cool enough that I want to know more about them, the aforementioned Ob Nixilis, Jor Kadeen, and Wrexial, the Risen Deep being my prime examples.

5/4 first strike for 5 CMC in limited would be great. 8/4 first strike with metalcraft is amazing. Giving all your other guys +3/0 is a game ender.

Less devastating in constructed, but still has the potential to be very good in the right deck.

Great with Shrine of Loyal Legions . Keep three mana open to explode with myr tokens that ensure you metalcraft, then summon him and swing hard. I've played many games at the prerelease draft where people just Loyal Legions build 4-5 counters not really worrying about 1-1 chumps only to leave themselves open after an attack then get instaswarmed for lethal.

shoulda been a Human Soldier !

but, yea - had this in the Release Event Sealed, and it felt more like an Overrun effect:
Drop him into a field of creatures/artifacts (Rusted Relic was particularly happy) and swing for a LOT.
I'd love to try a Tempered Steel deck with this guy; 5/3 Myr Tokens seem pretty fun!

So here's the thing.. I bought a pack of New Phyrexia at Target the other day and opened them at the in-store Pizza Hut while I was waiting on a pizza. I pulled this guy and thought oh he's pretty cool. I hear someone say "Hey bro, Pies ready" and look up. There's another guy at the register, a customer and he points at me and says he's talking to you, not me. I look back down at my cards, look back up at the guy and realize, Jor gets his pizza from the same Pizza Hut I do! lol. They looked so exactly the same that I decided to show him the card and even he couldn't believe it! My point is, I love good art on these cards as much as the next guy but how much longer will it be before we start seeing actual photographs of ppl and animals who live in our world on them?? When great becomes too good, it transforms into bad. I'm not saying it has, yet.. But remember that and let's keep an old art revival in mind before our beloved Magic becomes too "new". I miss the old art sometimes..

On a separate note, I have put my efforts into a battle cry deck as of late and included Jor, Hero of the Blade, Puresteel-P and some awesome equipment, some token generators like K-Rebirth and a little burn for removal with Gideon and Koth as my P-walkers. Let me just say this, I did it because I was bored and thought it would be fun, but never thought it would be great, at least not by my standards and by great, I mean holy geeez!! This deck is now 11-0 and that includes a 2 vs 1 where the opp's played a sick nasty poison (that had me to 8 counters) and the pre-constructed Archenemy Dragon Deck. Asside from the P-counters, I won fairly easily. Now they both have personal vendettas and won't let me use any of my other 18 decks until they beat me.. Can you guess what I must be thinking? Hand over mouth saying- Oh no. What have I done?? Is right. I think (hope I'm not getting ahead of myself due to luck) but I think (knocking the hell out of some wood), I THINK, this deck just might be ready to see the big stage..

With this guy and Melira leading the resistance, and Urabrask backing them as support, there is no way that Wizards isn't coming back to this plane in the future.

If you're running monowhite equipment, this guy makes splashing red definitely worth it. With Goblin Gaveleer, Galavonic Blast and Hellkite Igniter already in the block, if you weren't already doing this, you have little excuse not to now.

@IntrnetHte

I guess "backing" is a strong word choice. He's definitely harboring them. I think I read somewhere that he's the least "devout" of the praetors. Maybe he'll defect. I just know that flavor-wise, he doesn't seem very Phyrexian (i'm talking about the card) and red is the least corrupted color as far as infect goes.

If you hadn't realized, this guy is probably THE BEST Red White general there is. I've played a few others. Brion Stoutarm is darn fun (especially in a dedicated Giant theme deck), but it is incredible how ridiculous this guy can be.

White Sun's Zenith and Martial Coup are some of this guy's best friends. Play the Zenith at the end step of the turn right before yours, and swing in with 5/2 cats. That doesn't count any other pumps you might get with... Glorious Anthem, or (my favorite) Marshal's Anthem... BUT. The absolute best move you can make.

Elemental Mastery.

Drop Elemental Mastery on Kadeen, and you've got 8 4/1 Elementals with Haste, and you don't have to worry about losing creatures. Or maybe the game hasn't treated you so well yet. And you are on the back foot. Holding Kadeen back, and tapping to make 8 4/1 blockers sounds like a pretty good deal. EVEN BETTER... Elemental Mastery get's exponentially better... Got any anthems out??? Okay. I'll take NINE 5/2's.

Does anyone else find it hilariously funny that Helm of Kaldra, Shield of Kaldra, and Sword of Kaldra provide, not only a near godly game ending 9/9 Indestructible, first strike, trample, haste, and "Whenever equipped creature deals damage to a creature, exile that creature", but also provides 3 Indestructible Artifacts for Metalcraft?!

This is in my Mirrodin Free Deck
xD I mean, seriously, how could they NOT have Kaldra come in and save the world? Flavor Wise, he is immune to the Infection, because He's an Avatar! Mechanics Wise? As soon as he has Poison Counters on him, a simple 2 (or 1 if the original had 4 or more -1/-1 counters on it) and BOOM! you have a new Kaldra, fresh and new, and ready to fight more infection!!!

Now, combine with this: This is what you will have on the field
9/9 - Indestructible, first strike, trample, haste, and "Whenever equipped creature deals damage to a creature, exile that creature"
5/4 - First Strike, "Every Creature Gains +3/+0"

and whatever other Metalcraft monster's you might have! :D

If you haven't played him, you don't know how good he is in constructed too. He wins me games every time he comes out, especially when his metalcraft is activated (which isn't difficult). 8 first strike damage is a pain to deal with, no matter what format your playing in.

Use him as my EDH general and LOVE him. My favorite combo is to put Konda's Banner on him with a Spirit Mantle and an Inquisitor's Flail.

An unblockable 11/7 that deals double damage (Happens to be over 21 too).

No Spirit Mantle? No Problem, just cast Seize the Day on him and flashback it for another opponent next turn.

Hopefully with Avacyn Restored coming out soon this guy will have some friends. Personally, I think it's a shame that he's the only {R}{W} creature in standard.

It's kind of sad that he's largely ignored. And, he's only a rare. I feel that this guy should have decks built around him at least fairly commonly.

@ SirZapdos: He came with the other Phyrexians. He's pretending he has the Mirrodin watermark to spy on the Mirrans.

Probably my favorite Legendary creature of all time. So wonderfully designed, mixes his colors at features of his Block so well. Red for offense, White for teamwork, and a pseudo-Battlecry esque Metalcraft effect on a First Striking body (To get around Infect), all in one neat package with amazing art and...
Only a rare? Holy jesus this is perfect! It's almost like Wizards wanted this guy to see a lot of play, for some strange reason...

This guy's flavor, along with all the unfinished business on Mirrodin (Karn might help if he fixes up the rest of the oil, Urabrask comtemplating the Mirrans' dilemma, Melira healing people) makes me wonder if Wizards had a reason for tradmarking Mirrodin Pure.

Incredible Red/White General, the kind of damage this guy can throw around has to be seen to be believed.

Something nice about Jor is that he synergises well with cards already likely to be in a Commander deck anyway. Lightning Greaves, Sol Ring, Swiftfoot Boots.

I like to play him with a lot of mana acceleration artifacts and creatures like Boros Signet and Iron Myr/Gold Myr, and creatures that either themselves benefit from metalcraft or Jor's passive ability (think Auriok Edgewright, Bloodshot Trainee or Hearthfire Hobgoblin.

Token makers are also extremely vicious with the extra 3 power and luckily white is full of cards you could stick in the deck. Myrsmith Increasing Devotion Conqueror's Pledge. If the game runs on and you have access to a lot of mana from your accelerators cards like Pentavus or Thopter Assembly become hilarious.

And of course because you're playing red/white you have access to all the usual EDH shenanigans like Master Warcraft, True Conviction and Glory of Warfare.

A few reverse-fog cards like Ruthless Invasion or Order // Chaos can turn a stalemate into a quick win.
