of course it might be useful in a Hellbent deck, but i prefer discarding cards slowly for an effect, e.g. through Spellshapers instead. Or via Psychatog to have some fun with Madness effects.
but dependant on format, there are other cheap alternatives, also with different colors to get rid of your hand.

A very weak card, but not entirely without it's uses. It fuses nicely with surprise use of the Hellbent mechanic, and more than a few cards in the Shards of Alara Block. If you have Sedris, the Traitor King already in play and a handful of expensive creatures, for example, for 1 mana you suddenly have a graveyard full of very cheap creatures to chose from. You can also give Lord of Extinction a quick boost, if he's looking a bit fragile or you just need one or two more P/T to make the difference between losing your creature and killing your opponent's.

Okay, not brilliant ideas and about 4 years too late, but it's better than it used to be! =)

A few years ago, when Kamigawa was out, I was excited to open a pack of the new expansion, Saviors. The commons were decent, and the uncommons were not horrible, but then I laid eyes on the rare. One With Nothing, i thought, well, that's an interesting name, and it's black for only one swamp! Let's see what it does! I read the text, and read it again. Are you kidding me? I thought. "Discard your hand." I sat there for ten minutes, grasping at straws for reasons why Wizards could have possibly printed this card. I came up short.
It's not even that this shouldn't be a rare, it simply shouldn't be a card! Yeah, you could say it would work in a madness or treshold deck for either turn one cheap spells or turn one threshold. Great. Turn two rolls around and you draw either a) a land, which you play then pass, or b) a useful nonland card which you can't even play because all you have is a swamp! I was so sad. 0.5/5

this card is funny. I mean, you're One with Nothing as you play it. It's hardly used in most 'metagames', but we need more cards like that, with mindless effects that are useless like 95% of the time.

This Card Isnt Bad And Yes There Are Horrible Cards That Will Always Be Horrible Cards But This Card Is Not One Of Them It Can Be Very Good With Many Cards And Many Combos. Just Have To Be A Good Magic Player To Know Them Or Atleast A Sly One And If This Thing Wasnt Rare There Would Be Way To Many Of Em Going Around In Drafts And Just A Total Slot Waste In Booster Packs

This is by far the worst card ever to see play in a modern Pro Tour. Ironically, it was used to combat the Owling Mine deck, a deck WotC didn't even know existed.

Of course, the best players just played zoo, which rendered the matchup unwinnable for Owling Mine, but for those who didn't, this card came in handy in what was the dumbest answer to any deck ever.

I don't think it's that they actively sought to make it rare, but really, what else could it be? That sense of disbelief you get when you see it, the sputtering and slack-jawed, open-mouthed wonder that steals over you...it is not rare for its power, but rather for its power to infuriate you if you open it.

One With Nothing, thank you for having the cojones to be different, challenging, and above all INFURIATING. 5/5

Beautiful card. Challenges you to think, unlike most of the rares from M10 on, many of which seem to be based on the principle that a rare should be something that can pull off a very basic, common effect, but at an insanely broken mana cost, i.e. "a common, but better", and to hell with the fact that it'll send prices skyrocketing. See Baneslayer, most of the M10 mythics, Zendikar, etc.

I know why they made it rare: It lowers the chance you will open it in a pack!

This card makes a great combo with chimney imp: have chimney imp in your hand, cast OWN (it has good initials, atleast), then discard chimney imp so that you don't have to look at either of them anymore.

Hey, do you know which two cards can do the exact same thing as this junk AND more, for the same CMC? Sacred Rite and Rites of Initiation*! And they are scalable, let you pump your creatures, and were printed at common in a set where pitching your hand made sense, and not at rare in a set that encouraged you to be holding as many cards as possible! Face it, One With Nothing isn't genius: It's bilge, in terms of playability, design AND timing!
*And BOTH are rated lower than this junk anyways!

I most like cards that have a use on their own AND a combo use. This is only a combo use. They could at least have thrown in a bonus like "you may add 1 colourless mana to your mana pool for each card discarded this way" to just give it some kind of use outside of the very specific combos.
I know the art must have been a challenge, though purple volley balls shooting purple laser at someone's head doesn't make me think of nothingness. It could've been a guy meditating with a completely blank background or simply a completely white art... I don't know, but I don't associta purple laser balls with nothingness.

You know, when people say it's good because it "combos with Hive Mind," that doesn't make it a good card. In fact, it probably makes it a bad one, seeing that the only way it works is if you force it onto your opponent. I can say that I like work because other people have to do it for me (unfortunately not true), but that doesn't make work a good thing.

Okay, you guys saying this shouldn't be rare.....are FOOLS! This card at common or uncommon would increase the frequency of it showing up in limited and sealed, causing a card with an amazingly unique design that is useless in Kamigawa block limited to show up often. You idiots. This should be rare. Rarity isn't just about power. It's about uniqueness and skill testing. If you think this card is useless, you're not thinking hard enough.

The problem really isn't that One With Nothing is useless, or bad, or even rare. The trouble is that is has an extremely niche purpose, which another card already fulfills better than it. There is really almost no reason to play this over Putrid Imp. Only if you need to eliminate your entire hand instantly and have no setup time, or your opponent keeps countering your Imps.

Turn 1 threshold? Is that the best the pseudo-johnnies can come up with? It's only turn 1 threshold if you're on the draw, which means your opponent gets two turns to do whatever he wants while you waste your turn 6-for-1ing yourself. And what exactly are you going to do with threshold, one land and no cards at the start of your second turn? What 1-mana spell of unimaginable destruction are you going to draw? You got to be kidding me. There is no way to pretend that this card is good, so please stop trying.

I love this card if only for how I've seen some of the fans react to it.
The newbies see this and think: "Wait, that's stupid."
The experienced tryhards see the newbies and berate them with: "No, you're just a stupid newbie. There are times when you need stuff in your hand in your graveyard and this is a great way to do it."
Of course, the players who know what they're doing see this and think: "There are better ways to dump the cards I need in my hand in a more precise fashion. I guess there are a few cases where this might do a better job, but on the whole this is stupid."

Me and my friend created a new game format among our friends.

It's called Duel for Nothing.

What happens is that you play a game with any deck size.

You then replace 4 cards of your deck with One with Nothing. If you want to try it in EDH, still include 4 One with Nothing's.

If you have One with Nothing if your hand at ANY moment (opening hand or your draw it or you tutor for it (why? You tell me!)) you MUST play it. It is uncounterable, and costs 0.

It will be a cruel game of, "Oh yeah! All I need is one land, and... NNNOOO!!!!".

Then, and ONLY THEN will you ever experience being One with Nothing

Goes well with a new card from Gatecrash: Enter the Infinite (Draw your whole deck, put one card back, no max hand size).
So what you do is cast Enter the Infinite. Next turn do the following:
1) Draw last card
2) Tap 7 lands, cast Jokulhaups
3) Cast Tormod's Crypt
4) Cast One with Nothing
5) Sac the crypt targeting yourself (note that it will be in the graveyard and exile itself)

Result: No cards in hand, library, graveyard or in play. You have become completely one with nothing. Imagine the looks on your opponent's faces! Then reality sinks in, and they realize that they have to keep playing, and they have nothing left in play either...

It's just so seemingly negative that it's the kind of card that I would *love* to build around. To not only make a deck that makes use of it, but makes *good* use of it.

Of course, the major drawback is that there are a lot of cards which achieve the same result for around the same cost, but have far more control and less downside (Putrid Imp, of course). So even with a deck that could make use of this... it'd be better with Putrid Imp.

Oh One with Nothing, why couldn't you have some awesome threshold or something!

This card does not suck. You're all just hating on it because you're embarrassed about flaming the hell out of it, then 'oops!' looks like someone discovered it's actually completely abusable. This warrants 3 stars at a minimum for teaching everyone to never mock an innocuous so blindly again. Yes, the particular thing this card does can be done better by some other things...but few cards influenced the way people thought about cards in general more than this one. One With Nothing let the cat out of the bag: the wierd cards are awesome, and you should get all the copies your snooty dumb buddies turn their noses up at, because you never know what's going to be the next Memory Jar. It was not the first to shape people's thought's: it joins the noble ranks of Necropotence, Doubling Season, Morphling, Lightning Bolt, and I'm having difficulty thinking of others that really defined as encompassing Worldviews about MAGIC. That is a Short List. Oh yeah, Lion's Eye Diamond and Ichorid.

1.Cards are worth Life.
2.The Fastest Deck Wins.
3.Get as Much of everything as Possible.
4.Creatures with tons of Abilities are like Spells on Sticks.
5.The Graveyard is a Resource.
6.No price is too high for the right amount of mana.
7.The Wierder the Card, the Greater the Advantage gained by 'cracking' it.

I'm trying to think of any other really big concepts that single cards represent.
I think those are all the "Fundamentals" though. You need lots of practice to identify good cases from mediocre cases, but those 7 Rules will build you almost all the decks you'll ever want to build.

★★★☆☆ (3.4/5.0) (4 votes)
This card bugs the hell out of me for being at the wrong rarity, and I'm not talking about power.

Think about it. This card could be three things: Rare, Uncommon, or Common (disregarding Mythic for now, wasn't around then and couldn't be one anyway due to the power level).

As a Rare, it annoys people who get it since it's so brutally narrow - very effective in the right decks, but does bugger all for most others. Could've been a much cooler or more interesting card from that set, but sadly this is not the case. People who do want it will struggle to get a lot too, as it's a rare (unless you buy online).

As a common, you'd be have loads of these and it would have no useful purpose whatsoever in the draft scene, especially in a pure Saviours draft (auto-correct won't let me spell it the heretical American way). It'd just be a weird card you'd see loads of.

But at Uncommon? You'd get maybe one or two, you'd still have your shiny rare, and you wouldn't be overloaded with them. You could trade them easily with the people who do want them. Everyone would be happy.

Such a strange, strange card... can't deny it has uses though.

I don't get how this is rated so low, this is a black card people. Think about it. Turn 2, cast 2 dark riturals. Cast a tutor, then cast this in response. Empty the Eldrazi out of your hand. Tutor animate dead. And there is your Eldrazi turn 2 plus a whole not more cards in the grave you could use later. This is the ultimate play from the grave card.

It's also a great counter to Balance and any card that makes players have the same hand size or draw the same number of cards you have, and since it's block like I said you can play your cards from the grave they most likely can't.

And "One with Absolutely Nothing," would be the most broken card ever made. There are cards that bring every creature from your grave into play, and cards that bring every enchantment and artifact from your grave into play, you know that right? As long as you can give you creatures haste which would be super easy, you would win the game that turn.

Yes, for all that targetting mentioned on OWN...all zero of it.

Cards like this are actually useful for teaching rules concepts. If a spell, ability, or other effect doesn't say "target", it doesn't have a target.

Back when I was a little Reishyn Jr. getting a pack of Magic cards was always something of an event. It wasn't until I was about 16 or so that I actually had my own source of income so getting the pocket money to go buy a booster was one of the highlights of the week.

Pulling this card two weeks in a row was like a double-handed slap to the face.

Combo with : living end /reanimation in general, damia, sage of stone , nefarious lich and similiar effects and finally with hellbent.
Also, it came out in kamigawa, and that makes it swagalicious. 4/5

@Riclamin I'm not sure what you think you will be redirecting. Redirect changes the TARGET of a spell or ability. If One With Nothing said target player, then it would be banned in every format. Luckily there is a card that does say target player dicards their hand.

It also costs 5 mana.
Sorry to ruin your combo.

When I first saw Storm Crow I thought what the hell are you doing Wizard? This has to be the most broken card ever. Then I saw Chimney Imp, now at first I didn't think it was that good, but then someone pointed out to me it untaps for free during your untap step. It was like my mind was blown, now I know what they call him the Chimney Pimp. Definitely the best card ever right? Wrong, here comes One With Nothing. First off it combos with Mox Jet allowing you to play it Turn 1. That's right you can play this thing turn one with that insane combo. What's that didn't draw it, well luckily for you there is Demonic Tutor. Everyone knows with a card like this it is best to get it out as early as possible. Now I know a lot of you are saying, well yeah you can play it turn one with the Mox Jet super combo, but what is the point of discarding your hand? Let me ask you something how many times has your opponent played a card like Grixian Probe on you? Or Distress, or Duress, or Blood Oath? Let me tell you it happens. Your opponent gets to see all the cards you have to use against him. With This card they get to see nothing. Its like they wasted a card. Jokes on you opponent I have no hand. You just wait til next turn I am gonna draw something and possible if I have the mana play it, and you aren't going to have any idea what it is. Just think about that if you play against someone who uses this, you have no idea what's coming. You only option is to scoop.

Put this on an Isochron Scepter and you can discard your hand whenever you like for a mere 2 mana! This puts stuff like Entomb and Careful Study to shame.

They say useless, I say the most flavorful Madness enabler ever. When you have nothing left, you have nothing to lose.

I thought that I came up with a cool combo for this card, but after staring at it for a while... Yeah, I got nothing.

@Anyone doubting what VampireHounds said:

In legacy, people are willing to run 4 cost cards that put their library into their graveyard, even if they have to run no lands in their deck for it to work!

How about:
One with Derelor BBB
Instant
One with Derelor can't be countered.
For the rest of the game, spells you cast cost BBB
more to cast.

Sick tech for your Dark Suspicions deck. For those of you who, y'know, have a Dark Suspicions deck, for some reason.

"Man, that's a dick move, man. Don't do it, man. Just be cool. Put down the Zen spell, and be coo-- NO. NO. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!"

Hmmm, could work in a dredge style deck, life from the loam, Narcomoeba, Bridge from Below, Dread Return maybe even Nether Shadow (as you would be able to choose the order the go into the graveyard) and Bloodghast and you have yourself half a deck no one would ever see coming.

I broke it!! This + Hive Mind + Isochron Scepter = makes opponents discard their hands after they draw!! Add Unwinding Clock and artifact lands to spend all mana on your turn and make them discard. Use it after you draw and play your card.
