Free mana is free mana. Even if you run multiple, there are plenty of ways to utilize excess copies in an artifact abundant block (Mirrodin and Scar both). Free artifacts and artifact lands make this rather insane, not to mention going with other 0 cost mana artifacts.

Absolutely amazing.
That's about all there is to say. If you are playing a Mirrodin (Scars or otherwise) and you don't have 3 artifacts at all times you are doing something wrong.

Draw another copy? Just tap for mana and sac the copy in play, and play the new copy and tap it. This works particularly well with Krark Clan Ironworks

Superb mana acceleration. The flavor and feel of this card are Mox worthy.

Whether you are playing old Mirrodin or new Mirrodin, this card will always have a home. Metalcraft should be achievable turn 1, and it is almost guaranteed turns 2 and 3.

Legendary status is necessary because this card would be insanely broken otherwise.

Awesome, another card I won't be able to afford. Ever.

Just because it has 'Mox' in the name.

Wow. This is sooooo freaking broken. And you'll get four of them in your deck until it is banned in all formats and restricted in T1. Lessee. Artifact land, then take your pick: Zuran Orb, Ornithopter, Memnite, Phyrexians, Chrome Mox, Lotus Petal, Mox Diamond.... And it counts itself for the Metalcraft, so you only need 2 other artifacts to get the mana. It will be the most expensive card in the set, hands down. Legendary Status *is* the only thing that keeps this from being bro-o-oken.

This card is meh. I picure this being one of the cards that when you build the deck and its not playing right and you feel like something needs to go. This will be the card that will get cut. In the end if you draw another one it will be a dead card.

If it wasn't for the Legendary supertype, it would have felt as powerful as the other Mox. Imagine, a lucky opening hand: four Mox Opals, a land, a Dark ritual, and your favorite 7 or less CMC card, like, dunno, a Hunting Pack? Well, it's still quite possible to use his ability on the very first turn, with an artifact land and some 0 or 1 CMC artifact card.
bagilis
★★★☆☆ (3.8/5.0) (7 votes)
It is not so broken people may think. It has metalcraft, so for the ability to activate, you need to use 3 other slots with artifacts. Second, it is a legendary artifact, with all the restrictions which come along.

This should not be a 40 dollar card, if it weren't legendary, then yes, maybe. Plop down three, a land, Jace and brainstorm out your opponent in what, 3 turns?
The masticore is better, and the liquimetal cooling is the absolute brown sauce of the set, and it's uncommon.

I agree with all of those who say this is overrated and not worth $40. It really isn't I'd bet if wizards had only changed the name to something without mox, ii wouldn't be worth half as much. There is no real reason to use this in most decks. I would like a comment from whoever thinks this card is good and worth $40. If I get a REALLY good reason to like this, I will. Otherwise, I'll say it sucks.

I cannot believe the fuss over this card. Folks, it's NOT that great. Maybe playing nothing but Legacy and having the REAL things has jaded me, but come on. By the time you get this card out and able to use it, if you don't have enough mana already, you're doing something very wrong. And in a first turn, unless your deck is loaded with artifacts, it's close to useless.

Sorry, I just don't see what the big deal is. 3 stars at best. And THAT'S being overly generous.
Akym
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
To play the four glint hawks you would additionally need some more 0 cost artifacts, so that's not a very likely situation to come up. I agree with the previous comments that it is not worth 40-50$, but I do like it as a card. Nice with metalcraft, trinket mage and other cards that abuse cheap artifacts. I'll buy some when they cross the $10 mark ;-).

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
4 Glint Hawks on turn 1 (or "turn 0") is, last time I checked, pretty damn stupid. Not to mention that turn 2 could then follow up with an Etched Champion. This will drop in price, but I doubt it will drop as much as people think.

@Akym: It is unlikely, to a point, but still a possibility. I now realize that you actually would not be able to play Etched Champion the next turn after a hand like that...wasn't thinking straight. I don't think it will ever be banned, or that it's worth $40 either. But with all the 0 cost artifacts in standard right now, and all the goofy tricks that you can use, I doubt this will drop any lower than $30.

@Sironos: Because this is a VERY NARROW, VERY POWERFUL utility card. That's the point. To paraphrase MaRo, they didn't want something like a MR Cancel or Giant Growth only super-powerful. This is only a great card in metalcraft decks, hence the rarity.

And no, I don't believe it's worth $40 either. But this always happens on release, look at things like Archive Trap. It'll be back down to <$10 in a month or two unless someone finds a way to break it.

EDIT: I finally rated this card as a 3.5/5, and here's my justification: I really think this card is VASTLY overrated.

What made the original + Diamond Moxen really good was their ability to accelerate on the first turn, and they stuck around (i.e. it was like playing another land). To this end, there are 3 major problems with this "fixed" version:

1. Can't go off on the first turn unless you're really lucky.
2. Can be turned back off.
3. Is Legendary.

I understand these things were done to keep the power level in check, but I honestly think that neutered the "wow" power of the card. It looks flashy, but when you try to play it, it's a little more restrictive. When they get down to <$10 each I'll put them in my decks. Until then, though, they're big, flashy, chase mythics that don't really do much.

My rating becomes 4/5 when the price goes down.

After the 5 original moxen I think this is the best mox ever printed. I play 4 of these in my 5c stax deck now + the 5 originals. Stax just got meaner on the play. Just Bazaar of Baghdad the other Mox Opals when you draw them. Goblin Welder loves this card too. Definately a vintage worthy Mox, in a Workshop deck it's almost a sure bet it will accelerate your first turn.

This card is stalking me. I have bought two boxes and one fat pack of Scars. Each one has had a Mox Opal in it. About time I got a restraining order against this thing.

@Chrome_Coyote . . hahahah dude when I saw that this was rated a 3.9 I was shocked! And I immediately checked the price online because I was hoping this card's price had dropped. I was sadly disappointed. BUT, I'm gonna pull one of those eventually!! Even if I spend $300 dollars on packs and I could have just got one online for 25 bucks. I just thought your comment was funny because I was thinking the exact same thing. This is my chance to own a MOX!! I mean a freakin MOX people! If you aren't clamoring to pick one of these up, you either are a bad A$$ that has older ones, or are just missing the whole concept of MTG! anyways, Magic kicks ***!

EDIT: I wrote the above on 10/28/10 at 6:51:10 PM on the dot. . . I was pretty excited for the fact that I had a possibility to pull an actual MOX! Well, last night I was at wal-mart getting a movie with my brother and decided to get one pack for him and one for me. As we were walking to the car I was telling him how I wanted a Mox so bad and that they were the Holy Grail's of Magic (well they are to me at least). When we got into the car I was looking at the two packs I had gotten trying to decide which one I'd give my brother. THANK GOD I chose the right one because there was a freakin MOX OPAL in there!!! I seriously couldn't believe that I got ONE pack and just happened to get it!! The one card I had mentioned and said I wanted, was in my hands, finally! It was a moment of happiness and saddness, because I realized that my quest for the holy relic had come to an end. . . Or has it. GOD DANGIT I still need 3 more!

I agree this is an awesome card, and it being legendary - along with the whole metalcraft thing - fixes a lot of the problems inherit in the "mox" category of artifacts. But did it really need to be mythic? It's great, yes, but I see no reason for it not to be rare - as far as I'm concerned, it's mythic status has only served to keep its price artificially high. Let's face it, the people who really want this card and have that much money are going to get four copies of it, regardless of rarity.
Also, I really hate to be the guy to bring this up again, I promise, but...
"We've also decided that there are certain things we specifically do not want to be mythic rares. The largest category is utility cards, what I'll define as cards that fill a universal function. Some examples of this category would be cycles of dual lands and cards like Mutavaultor Char." ~Mark Rosewater

@ raptorjesus69:

Multiples is actually the point. Thanks to this, Signal Pest, and Memnite Kuldotha Red can basically have metalcraft turn one and sac each copy of Mox Opal to Kuldotha Rebirth. Usually putting 5-9 bodies on the field 1st turn and then perhaps winning on turn 2.

Funny how red decks get around the legend rule by just breaking shit.

Kuldotha Red: The most expensive mono red deck ever. I've estimated it at $95. And it's only going up because Mox Opal is. Every other piece is pennies on the dollar, but when we seem to get legendary mythic rare utility, we seem to get legendary mythic rare price.

This was the second Mythic I ever got out of a booster, and it was the only card in Scars I was dying to get. Pretty sodding lucky. It's really a flavor card, yes, unless you have it in a deck crammed with Ornithopters, Memnites, Glint Hawks and Kuldotha Rebirths. Then and only then do you see how ridiculous it is. Now with Besieged, it also allows you to have a 3/3 Ardent Recruit on turn 1. If one of your first artifacts was also Signal Pest, damn son. A fair whack of damage on turn 2.

I'd use Artifact Lands in my deck but they just feel so broken, I feel terrible for using them.

@Toan133: I'll respond to your incredibly lucky hand with Mountain, Rite of Flame and Pyroclasm ;)

Mox Opal is really good... actually, it's bonkers... honestly, after a bit of thinking, this card enables some very, very sick plays... Imagine a 3rd turn 8/8 Ezuri's Brigade, a 2nd turn Tempered Steel to buff your Memnites/Ornithopters or, as Toan mentioned, a 1st turn 4/4 Carapace Forger... With the presence of both Ornithopter and Memnite in standard Mox Opal isn't something to sneeze at.

Guys, guys, the price is at 15 USD right now. Seriously? You're still complaining about the price and the fact that it's a "utility mythic rare?" hasn't it always been said that mythics are not just power level, but also flavorful, or in some way meaningful or significant to the game? IT'S A GODDAMN MOX. What would it be if not mythic? And it's completely affordable. If you're still complaining about the price, then find a cheaper card game to play. There is such a thing as budgeting, and if you really complain this much about a game you supposedly like to play, then I don't understand you at all. Not all decks need to be tournament worthy. If your play group has to set budget limits on decks to keep one person with a higher price ceiling from making the best decks, then do it. OR, pool the group's money to buy the cards, or JUST BUY PACKS AND ENJOY THE THRILL OF OPENING CARDS. If you're still ***ed about it, then you're right. It's a goddamn card game. So go spend your money on other things, and don't play. People that do nothing but complain about cards' power levels and prices and abilities are not going to be detrimental to the game in their absence. So man up, budget, or play decks that are fun for you to play. If you wanna go tournament level, then don't complain when cards at tournament level are expensive (protip: there's a reason for this).

/Rant.

Insanely powerful, Imagine playing a deck with master transmuter! You could get a playset out on turn 2 if you played 4x menite and orinthopter! Imagine, turn three, having seven mana. Doesn't get better than that. (Especially if all three of you your land are cards like boros garrison.)

I think this is the first time in a long time I've seen adding the Legendary type to a card actually help it. Otherwise, this card would be 1) terribly scaled down, probably costing 1 or even 2, making it a slightly better Sphere of the Suns or 2) horribly bah-row-kin causing Wizards to ban it like Mental Misstep in nearly everything but Standard.

Seems to me more often than not Legendary has become more of a flavor thing than a tool for moderating cards (allowing more powerful ones). Would two Olivia Voldaren on the field really be THAT bad? Or what about Grimoire of the Dead? I will admit, though, it does make an interesting way to deal with hexproof thanks to Phantasmal Image.

@PlanesWalkerXander
I have to wholeheartedly disagree. Mythic (or Rarity, in general) should not equal power or playability. It should be based on the uniqueness of the card and it's abilities. This is pretty unique, being one of the first Mox-type card designed in a while. Yeah, it's powerful. But that isn't entirely why it is Mythic (that is why it is Legendary, though). This isn't an auto-include card. For example, Wolfrun Ramp would need a serious revamp to try and fit these in, if it was possible at all.

In the right type of deck, this is the most powerful Mox ever. It has specific requirements so this restricts it's use and speed to certain deck builds.

Whats up with all the negativity? Seriously people when Wizards pops out a brainless no-skill card then everyone complains. But when they print an insanely powerfull card that isn't an auto include to every deck out there, that has drawbacks and requires from YOU to actually have some skill in utilizing it to its fullest potential, you still whine. Pathetic.
Anyway, Arcbound Ravager and this baby for some hot artifact action

Also, yeah it has restrictions but that's a GOOD thing, plus guess what, so do Diamond and Chrome, the only other Moxen to not be banrestricted in every other format and its cousin

Wizards had a moment of brilliance here. By making it legendary, it's very unlikely it will have to be restricted in Vintage. If it weren't legendary it would be restricted in a heartbeat. You can still play 4 in a deck and up your odds of getting it first turn, but at least you can't drop 3 in play first turn and have them all get metalcraft off each other.

I will say, it is quite easy to get it usable first turn in Vintage... Seat of the Synod, play any Sol Ring/Mana Vault/Divining Top/Voltaic Key, not to mention other moxes. And there you go. In the right deck, pulling it first turn should nearly always allow you to use it first turn.

EDIT: After some testing in Vintage decks, I now regard this as the strongest Mox ever made. Yep, it's even better than the original 5. The only 0cc mana artifact I'd rate higher in terms of how it impacts the game is the Lotus (maybe lion's eye, too, tough to say). It's just far far too easy to get 3 artifacts in play very quickly in Vintage. The metalcraft penalty almost doesn't exist. Sure, some will say "but what if the deck doesn't have a lot of artifacts?" but look at the top vintage decks. They are loaded with artifacts. Many of them have all 5 of the original moxes and lotus even if the deck only uses a couple of those colors. It's going to be the exception to the norm when a good vintage deck with this card in it draws it first turn and isn't able to use it that turn.

So, with the upcoming legendary rule changes, running more than one of these just means any beyond the first becomes a Lotus Petal.

Nifty.

@ Technetium: Oh how in less than a week things can change. If you thought this was the best Mox before...

Price just jumped $10 in the last 2 days (Thanks Legendary rule change)! I suspect it'll become Vintage restricted on the next round of bannings, since Lotus Petal already is, and I'm concerned it'll go the way of Seething Song in Modern too. I'm hoping not, but Wizards hasn't been letting the meta take care of itself so far, so I don't know why they would start now.

Holy shit, just saw this in the hobby shop where we play Magic, and I bought a set at once. So damn powerful. ( o_o)-b

Getting 2 other very useful artifacts in play in the first turn isn't as easy as it sounds. It's nice for Modern to have a Mox, but it's obvious why the Chrome Mox was banned and the Opal wasn't. With the new legend rule, this card isn't as bad anymore, but it really only shines as bright as an Alpha/Beta Mox in Vintage. Even then, having the rest of the Moxes and She-mana-gans like Sol Ring are critical for this thing to seriously impact the game. 4/5

The Artifact Lands are honestly more powerful in Affinity than this is in Metalcraft. Affinity is scary, lol.

This is a great card and 0-cost mana producers are ALWAYS great cards. But it's not 40-$ good. It's very, very good.

EDIT: "Obligatory Except in Vintage Comment" where it's $200 good ROFLMAO. xP Before the New Legend Rule this card just simply wasn't Power-9 quality. Now I'm thinking we need to remake the lists from scratch and say what the Power 5 of each 4 year period are in the first 20 years of MAGIC. After the 20th year, Power Creep + Nostalgia mean that too many cards will resemble most of the Old Greats to make it fair to actually induct new members. Not saying Design is drying up, just saying we don't want to pollute the list with every "Win the Game on Turn 2" creature ever and there's only so many cards with "Mox" or "Lotus" in the name that would be fair to include? I'll go by what decks they spawned rather than just the decks of their time. This makes the first 5 more representative of the Vintage format.

1993-1997 (Alpha - Tempest)
1. Black Lotus/Sol Ring/Mox Sapphire/Mox Ruby/Mox Jet/Mox Pearl/Mox Emerald
2. Time Vault/Time Walk
3. Bazaar of Baghdad/Ancestral Recall
4. Mana Drain
5. Necropotence

I know, I know...but cuts had to be made.
EDIT: undid some cuts. Looks bad.

1998-2003 (Stronghold - Mirrodin)
1. !!!!!!!!!!
2. !!!!!!!!!!
3. !!!!!!!!!!
4. !!!!!!!!!!
5. !!!!!!!!!!

I don't even.....know where to start -_- It does not stop with Urza o.O

2004-2008 (Darksteel - Shards of Alara)
1. Darksteel Colossus (very glad timing worked out to allow him on the list)
2. Lotus Bloom
3. Ancestral Vision
4. Arcbound Ravager
5. Umezawa's Jitte

Sorry, Ravnica! You were too fair and fun? :)

2009-2013 (Conflux - Theros)
1. Jace, the Mind Sculptor
2. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn/Griselbrand/Blightsteel Colossus/Progenitus
3. Mox Opal ?
.....

Actually I give up. MAGIC has way too many busted cards in it XD

EVEN when you try to pin down the list to 'not just the banned, but the most powerful of all the cards. the ones that consistently win all the games, whether they're banned or not'

There's....so many....cards...to name o.O

@myusha
WotC added the legendaryartifact type for just this situation. If you play more than one of them, they all go to the graveyard instantly.
@MasterOfEtherium
the legends rule is one of the oldest and most sensible rules in mtg...

Excellent in mirrodin, the most heavily artifact-themed expansion in the game. In most decks that would be running it it's either a free land that takes a minute to get going or an artifact that itself contributes to affinity or metalcraft. I dont know who would be hating on it. Its a 0 drop, for Karona's sake. if it doesn't do anything, that's fine. If it does, it's excellent.

When will WOTC learn? Free mana is still free mana.
