This card is the most intersting one to me from this new set. I find it strange because it does not apply to just artifact creatures, but all artifacts...
If the activated ability states the name of the original card, would it still work with this? Really, how can this work... it seems like this is going to have some problems...
Any thoughts?

@ MindEcho: If the activated ability includes the name of the original card, it still works with Myr Welder. For example, if you had a Soliton in your graveyard and you exiled it, Myr Welder would then have {U}: Untap Myr Welder, not untap Soliton. Which would be funny.
As for the card itself, I love it. Works really well with two of the three Masticores.

So, if I'm understanding this right, if Myr Welder is in your graveyard and you have a Necrotic Ooze on the field, can you tap it to imprint artifacts and use their activated abilities?
Artscrafter
★★★★★ (5.0/5.0)(1 vote)
@MyrBattlecube: You would be able to use Necrotic Ooze to exile artifacts, but the ooze wouldn't get the static ability that lets you use the things you exile. So that would really only function as graveyard hate.

My understanding of Rule 607 ("Linked Abilities") suggests that the Isochron Scepter combo doesn't work. Examine 607.2a:
"If an object has an activated or triggered ability printed on it that instructs a player to exile one or more cards and an ability printed on it that refers either to 'the exiled cards' or to cards 'exiled with ,' these abilities are linked. The second ability refers only to cards in the exile zone that were put there as a result of an instruction to exile them in the first ability."
If I'm reading this correctly, this specifies that, even though the "cast spells" ability of an Isochron Scepter that was exiled by this is considered to be "printed on" the Myr Welder card, that ability actually wouldn't be considered linked to its imprint ability, so the "cast spells" ability won't do anything.
I'm really astonished this card didn't get any space in the Mirrodin Besieged FAQ.

@ Intentionallywrong Card of the day for 2/4/2011, affirms your understanding of rule 607.2a my friend.
You can't use the ability gained from mimic vat or isochron's scepter to create copies of cards exiled with welder's ability.
@kryptnyt Panoptic mirror would allow you to pay x and imprint a sorcery or instant onto the welder, but the welder only gains activated abilities. So it wouldn't have access to the triggered ability that allows you to cast the imprinted card.

The linked abilities rule needs to go. As printed, and in Oracle for that matter, all of these cards reference cards "exiled by CARDNAME." That only means one thing and this rule makes it mean an entirely different thing solely for the purpose of nerfing ridiculously arcane combos that they have no reason to eliminate.

I think it is stupid to have linked abilities when you straight out read the card you think you can do stuff like the mimic vat combo, same reason I cant pull similar combos with Mizzium Transreliquat changed it from one of my favourite artifacts, to a just above sub par artifact in my collection
i no longer want to build a deck around it, mostly because i cant. its still a pretty good card though, its not a myr combo piece that can be picked off so easily with 4 toughness, and it does have a rareish ability
i would however, due to linked abilities dissapointing me all the time give it a 3.5 out of 5

Might be a bit of a silly question, but I'm just starting to delve into the deeper rules of Magic so... Myr Welder can gain the activated abilities, but does not gain the card type, of an exiled artifact. Does this mean that 301.5c doesn't apply? Can a Myr Welder that's picked up an Equip ability equip to another creature? I can see that conceptually working with the Myr Battlesphere at least...

@Aburaishi - Cards that are not on the battlefield are no longer subject to effects placed on them on the battlefield, unless the effect states otherwise. Therefore Myr Welder would not be able to imprint any of those cards via Liquimetal Coating.
@Manaboy - Etched Champion's protection from all colors is a triggered ability via Metalcraft, not an activated ability. Also, I believe you are thinking Platinum Angel, for not being able to lose the game, but that is a static ability, so that also would not work.

This cards ability confuses me a little so if I were to use its ability on say Argentum Armor would it then gain the ability to destroy a permanent every time it attacks. Because Im not exactly sure of the definition of an activated ability. Because the armors ability is conditional upon it attacking so that makes it an activated ability right. Also if this ability does not apply that would mean using the Myr Welder on any Equipment would be pointless

@ Lynasheng: The second sentence in paragraph 301.5c: "An Equipment that loses the subtype 'Equipment' can’t equip a creature." Since Myr Welder doesn't pick up the Equipment subtype, it can't equip anything.

Question: My friend uses Myr welder to exile his Myr Galvanizer or whatever. If I kill Myr welder, he brings it back with myr reservoir, and then replays it, does it still have the activated abilities of the cards it exiled? it seems to me like it shouldn't for the same reason why vensering a kicked Kor Sanctifiers doesn't allow you to keep killing artifacts/enchantments. at the same time, the cards WERE exiled with myr welder. so I dont know

From the comprehensive rules:
400.7. An object that moves from one zone to another becomes a new object with no memory of, or

So the myr welder will have no memory of the galvanizer it exiled when it hits the battlefield again, so your friend can't use it.

Opponent: you have artifact creatures in your yard, I have their abilities. Me: Not any more. Now I have their abilities and you only have your abilities :)
It is my understanding that Myr Welder can imprint an Isochron Scepter and a Panoptic Mirror, and then start imprinting instants from your hand via the Mirror's granted ability and start casting copies of them via Scepter's activated ability. I deduced this by conducting a gatherer search of cards with an Imprint ability and specifically checking whether it was activated, like Mirror's, or triggered, like Chrome Mox. This way, Myr Welder can actually imprint cards that imprint, and abuse the activated abilities of all of them by imprinting nonartifact cards that they check for. Its imprint ability is linked to all abilities it has that care.
The Galvanizer + Palladium trick doesn't just give you infinite mana, it also lets you tap/untap any Myr you have. If you imprint Grindclock on Myr Welder, just imagine it...
