Awesome artwork, and so useful too. Great in colorless and artifact decks, or in colored decks too if you don't want to buff him.

This is a good card. At pre-release, he wasn't as good as I imagined he'd be. In limited we have a great deal of artifact creatures that control him easily. Maybe I needed some nicer equipment for him. I can see this guy being better in constructed where artifact blockers are less commonplace and coloured removal spells are more important.

Too good. Like most artifacts, it combos well with Steel Overseer b/c it isn't affected by pseudo-shroud

This artifact soldier is really good. I run four of them in my new type 2 deck and often equip him with equipments such as Basilisk Collar, Sword of Vengeance or even Bladed Pinions to stop flying creatures if needed. Combined with Steel Overseer and/or Voltaic Key, this guy is a very good attacker and defender.

I'm gonna have to say that this guy is my favorite card in the set. The art, plus the effectiveness of it all just makes me happy inside every time I draw this beast. He's MY champion, take THAT Gerrard!

Good if you have enough equipment to pump him. Otherwise... it's still just a bear. 2/5

Got 3 out in the same game, to bad my opponent hit me with a steel hellkite and then choose 3.

Don't forget it do not have protection from colorless so a 3/3 artifact crature can block and kill it

Up to this point in my limited hobby as a Magic the Gathering player, I've ended up with this extremely random mana source: Majority plains, about 18 forests, 15 forests and Islands, 12 Mountains and 10 swamps. So I'm thinking now, to invest in an Artifact deck, as it is probably the best way for me to NOT having to worry about mana source. Just chuck in some random mana and hope for the best. Although that'd be the sort of attitude for players who only want to aim for a top-deck hand :P! Anyways, I've been thinking of Etched Champion as well as Mox Opal and Mox opal and other cards with similar abilities then the leech creatures such as the vampire Black Coven Vampires. Of course, I won't just based my deck around just thos as I'm also planning to get cards with the flash ability such as tooth of Chiss-Goria (very old card) and others as well.

But could you guys give me some pointers to building such a deck?
Cheers

The Field Marshal and Captain of the Watch love this machine. Protection from colors and able to be buffed by one of the strongest tribes in the game? this card is a solid 4.5

I have a rules question regarding interactions between a blocker with protection from the creature it's blocking, and the creature that's being blocked having trample. Let's say I'm attacking with a Rapacious One, and it's blocked by an Etched Champion or anything else that has protection from red.

Does my red trampler not assign any damage to the defending player or planeswalker on the basis that because the blocking creature has protection, it can't be assigned lethal damage by my red trampler? Or does trample damage still leak over while the would-be lethal damage to the blocker is prevented?

EDIT: Ok, question answered. I looked more at the comprehensive rules. The damage is still assigned, although prevented, and the trample damage still gets through. Nice. (702.17b)

My opinion is that this is a very mean artifact. I saw him used in a deck using artifact lands, Steel Overseer, and Energy Chamber. In an emperor game. It got almost as huge as my Rockslide Elemental in the same game.

Ok, ok, it doesn't have protection from colorless, so an artifact 3/3 could easily kill it.
But, look for a card w/ color protection. What do you find?
Maybe pristine angel, or iridescent angel. But too expensive for me. If you have heavy ones on play, Favor of the Mighty.

Or try out sword of fire and ice , sword of body and mind or sword of light and shadow.

Off course Metalcraft makes you need some artifacts, and so why don't try cranial plating, fireshrieker, or even jitte? They are very good for any creatures.

Even with Pledge of Loyalty or Samite Elder you can't reach so nice protection.

If you wanna say: "any 3/3 artifact can kill it", i say: any Lightning Bolt kills a 3/3. What do you need more? maybe you're searching for artifact protection? Look for progenitus - of course who didn't want that on play?

It's not the card, it's about how you play and makes use of it.
to me, cmc = 3 asks for 5/5.

Okay, Okay... He can be killed by a 3/3 colorless creature. But only by a colorless creature.
Take into consideration Mistmeadow Skulk. Paired together, these two cards can have protection from almost anything seriously dangerous.
Because its cmc is so low, and because you can buff him with Energy Chamber or something of the sort, imo its clearly a 5/5.

Also really cool Artwork. Kudos to Matt Cavotta.

This card is soooooo broken in extended, or really anything out of this very artifact heavy block, since it effectively says "Protection from everything." in a colored deck where most artifacts are just passive (Life gains) or just equipment.

This guy in stand alone is not much. But he is meant for an artifact deck. So boost that guy to the max with artifact attachments. I have a great Artifact deck and he has stopped the best of decks dead in there tracks. Add Reach and a strong attack booster to this card and only a well built Burn deck will stop this card.

If he had his protection from colors and your turned the opposing creature into an artifact with say liquimetal coating could they then damage him or is he still protected?

I love this guy, but I always have trouble finding a place for him. I feel like he wants to be in a Ornithopter/Memnite deck where you can drop the zero-cost artifacts as quickly as possible to make this guy untouchable. I really really REALLY want to try to fit him in a myr deck, though, as an alternative win con to the Battlesphere.

@SeiberTross

I think without a doubt, the best creature to copy with a Prototype Portal is Phyrexian Metamorph simply because of the utility. You can do absurd things with copying Prototype Portal with the Metamorph, imprinting something else such as a Wurmcoil or Mindslaver. Throw in a few Grand Architects and some cheap blue creatures and you're laughing.

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (1 vote)
Take this guy, put some Swiftfoot Boots on him, then drop a Spirit Mantle on him, and throw on a Darksteel Plate for lulz, and make sure to keep some other creatures out so you don't have to sac him for whatever reason, and he becomes quite the bastard. I'm thinkin about making a deck with this guy, a bunch of equipments, and 4 each of Goblin Gaveleer and Kor Outfitter. What do you all think?
Amnesigenic
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@Gremstein: the spirit mantle wouldn't work, protection from white would knock it off of him. Equipment of any kind would be great, though.

Karn, Silver Golem Voltron EDH?

I'd run this guy as the Field General. On the front lines. With a sword in each hand.

Look at that art. Look at his pose, the way he's standing there with his arms crossed. He's got pro-colors and he knows it. He also knows how much it bugs you.
You know what he's saying with his body language?
"Deal with it."

It can be a nice finisher for Affinity deck, in case you didn't kill your opponent by turn 3.

This would make sense if it was Sunburst, but this is just too easy. I saw this come out twice, and both times I went into panic mode. My entire efforts were focused on killing this this thing, especially since it got a couple of cheap equipment on it. This is a race card pure as day, and entire decks are built around and play turns entirely against it. Unbalancing if you ask me. I don't like cards like this.

A board wipe is really the only way to deal with this... and if your opponent runs four, how do you stop it? It's broken beyond measure. No one is going to run Ghostfire just in case someone uses this one card.
DoragonShinzui
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
@Lifegainwithbite: There are OTHER colorless creatures in the game, idiot. Artifact creatures and Eldrazi laugh at this particular champion, and flying creatures just ignore him and his protection.

There are so many ways around this guy in every color it isn't even funny. White and Blue have flying, red just burns the player, black can force enemies to sacrifice him, and green just tramples over him or destroys his other artifact buddies. He's far, far from broken. Strong if used correctly, but he's a 2/2 for 3. Even a Phyrexian Hulk can smash this guy into dust.

He's an extraordinarily efficient blocker in a lot of formats (providing you're rocking the artifacts en masse). That was my favourite thing about him when trying to get my sunburst deck going - he could hold off a lot for a couple of turns.

great for some early damage to slip right past colored defenders. equip a batterskull to it and it becomes a force to be reckoned with. also throw in an unwinding clock with a steel overseer on the field with this guy. you win games, unless a board wipe is involved of course.

No Show and Tell
No True-Name getting it for free

This guy is the respectable way to have Pro-everything; and it's even nicer to play against since it has.. you know.. weaknesses.
