The next turn after this I'll destroy your "high casting cost artifact" and play Assault Strobe.

Very good against an artifact based deck, so-so if not

"Hello, players.
Look at your board.
Now back to me.
Now back at your board.
Now back to me.
Sadly, it isn't me.
But if you stopped casting artifacts and switched to casting Hoard-Smelter Dragon, it could smelt like it's me.
Now look down.
Now back up.
Where are you?
You're in the graveyard, with the artifacts your board could smelt like.
What's in your hand.
Now back at me.
Now my hand.
It's got a lot of cards that kill you dead and punish you for playing those stupid Myr.
Look again, the Myr are now Enrages!
Anything is possible when your board smelts like the Hoard-Smelter Dragon and not an artifact.
I'm on a Chrome Steed."

I love dragons unconditionally. It's like Shivan Dragon and Shatter had a baby together.

DonRoyale, you get 100,000,000,000 times infinity awesome points.

Red bomb is bomby.

But seriously... shatter on a stick? And not just a stick, but a 5/5 flying stick that gets even stick-ier when it does shatter? What insanity is this! =P Repeatable spot removal will always be good due to potentially insane card advantage, so expect this card to be an auto pick in pack 1s. Double red is always tricky, but you'll get people straining to splash it too - it's that good.

Awesome card in limited, I don't think there's enough non-artifact removal in this set to deal with him well, and in artifact heavy environment it only gets better.

In Constructed though, it's very marginal even as sideboard since its 6 cmc then 4 mana to destroy artifacts which is very mana intensive. I mean I'm pretty sure they're not just gonna watch it fly over and deal combat dmg to you at that late in the game unless you pretty much have game won already.

Better than steel hellkite in my opinion though.

I just noticed he has fire shooting out of his wing-pits... he really could use some damn deodorant for that.

I would also like to add that he's great alongside any indestructible artifact. Your opponent not playing artifacts? Did you smelt all of them and somehow not kill him? Well just use his ability on your Darksteel and bam, +X/+0 with no card hitting the graveyard.

This card is amazing in limited. It sealed my game when I played it; I destroyed both of my opponent's artifacts and the next turn took out my own for the win. My dragon was even only a 3/3 because of -1/-1 counters, but it didn't matter when there was stuff to shatter with his ability.

★★☆☆☆ (2.8/5.0) (2 votes)
what's that, you've cheated down Emrakul? I'll just liquimetal coat him/it(Him/It), and munch him - on your turn - go ahead, attack my 20/5 flyer.

great card. Got a Foil on in the pre-release only later to find out that they where selling them in one of the starter decks as the foil rare... I just got a second one today and I'm going to put them both in my Sarkhan the Mad Dragon deck.

Not too bad. Just offer up some of your own artifact creatures at the right time and go for the kill.

This guy's best friends with Darksteel Colossus, being a repeatable target for this dragon's buff ability.

Training Grounds + Liquimetal Coating. Now it really IS Shatter every turn! If you wanted to be a douche-bag, you could shoot your opponent's lands. Definitely one of the most versatile dragons, and one of the most threatening in this block.

Just played my first booster draft last night, and I grabbed hold of this guy. He (along with Victory's Herald in the second round) pretty much got me into 4th-5th place out of 30+ players.

I love this. And the look on his face is priceless.

"HAHAHAHA!!! Artifacts!! ARTIFACTS!!!!"

He's kind of like those kids in Asia who melt down old motherboards for the precious metals. The only difference is he gets bigger (the kids just get cancer).

Really an amazing dragon. Here is a deck based around him:

20 Mountains

4 Liquimetal Coating
4 Crystal Ball
4 Mycosynth Wellspring
2 Ichor Wellspring
2 Spine of Ish Sah

4 Slag Fiend
4 Manic Vandal
4 Oxidda Scrapmelter
4 Hoard-Smelter Dragon

4 Crush
4 Geosurge

Side:
4 Slagstorm
4 Into the Core
4 Turn To Slag
3 Shatter

My friend played Darksteel Colossus. I played this. I survived the first assault then "destroyed" it 2 times and blasted him with a 27/5 flyer.

This card is really really good.

Hoard-Smelting + Liquimetal= Lands! Taste the rainbow!

This guy is my late game finisher. If he gets out then it means there is no chance for redemption... Unless there is... I don't know.

Splinter Twin'd Oxidda Scrapmelters and or Manic Vandals complete the world smashing conquest of my mono red smashy deck.

I absolutely hate Myrs, and that seems to be the only creature type my brother uses, so I got beat maybe a couple more games then I would've liked...

And then I saw this guy.

I run two of this guy in my sideboard to swap out for Flameblast Dragon against heavy artifact decks. Not quite as much punch (unless you're killing REALLY big artifacts) but it's hard to argue with +2/+0, a dead Sword, and a swing for seven.

AWESOME COMBO for a blue/red deck I was thinking of for extended or casual .
To continue what DacenOctavio said here :
Training Grounds + Liquimetal Coating. Now it really IS Shatter every turn! If you wanted to be a douche-bag, you could shoot your opponent's lands. Definitely one of the most versatile dragons, and one of the most threatening in this block.

training grounds + liquimetal coating would let you eat anything for 1R or with 2 training grounds out , R. INSANE !

Master Transmuter -> Gleemax -> sac with Hoard-Smelter Dragon -> Fling/Unblockability. After this it's generally considered common courtesy to hand your opponent a tissue to cry into.

Really strong advantage engine for red. In EDH, a lot of artifacts are used to ramp decks that don't use green. This card can punish those decks really badly while also helping to clear the random jitte that pops up every once in a while.

A recommended card in any EDH deck that has red. Reusable artifact destruction is quite invaluable.

Add Mycosynth Lattice and it becomes a Horde-Smelter Dragon.

So it turns the non-precious metals into gas?
