Combo this with Panoptic Mirror and Isochron Scepter and you can put powerful high cost instants onto a "isochron Scepter". first replicate the Panoptic Mirror and use its ability to imprint say Chant of the Vitu-Ghazi then replicate the Isochron Scepter and you have a "Chant of the Vitu-Ghazi on a stick"

another card by my favourite artist,

ive always liked this card, but due to linked abilities it lost most usefulness i wanted to build around it for...

wanted it to turn into a death mask duplicate or similar, imprint a heap of cards, and then into any other imprint card and then use those cards, however imprint doesn't work that way

still a very good card however 4/5

Amongst many cards that became way more fun with Liquimetal Coating

@leomistico & Lord_Xelitoth It doesn't work, because the imprint abilities on both the Mirror and Scepter are linked to the other ability. So a card imprinted on the Transreliquat using the Mirror's copied activated ability would only be played using the copied triggered ability, and it wouldn't be able to copy cards if it became a copy of the scepter, because it didn't have the CIB imprint ability and thus didn't remove anything with it. That's kinda sad, because it would also allow some crazy combos with Myr Welder...

@Lord_Xelitoth: nice suggest! It doesn't even need to be an instant, since the new test of Isochron Scepter is: "2, Tap: You may copy the exiled card. If you do, you may cast the copy without paying its mana cost." A little convoluted, but it should work. And if it works, it should be spectacular!

Costs more than Sculpting Steel , but it's more versatile. Next time I will give it a try...!

4/5

Edit, @Luke_BPC:
I meant: you copy the Panoptic Mirror and with its {T} ability you exile an instant or sorcery card from your hand, say Opportunity. You can use one of the two ability of the Mizzium Transreliquat, it's the same... Then you copy the Isochron Scepter, that has an ability that reads "{2}, {T}: You may copy the exiled card. If you do, you may cast the copy without paying its mana cost.". As you can see, there are no restriction about the card that the scepter can copy, only that it has to be removed by that card, requirement meeted because you exiled the Opportunity with the same Mizzium Transreliquat, only it was in the form of a Mirror. But when a card says in its rule text its name, actually it means "this card", so the requirement is meeted...

@leomistico, the requirement actually is NOT met, because the card was removed by an ability other than isochron scepter's first ability. Even though it's not explicitly spelled out on the cards, the two abilities are linked- the second can only be used by cards exiled by the first. Similarly, the Panoptic mirror's imprint ability only impacts its triggered ability.

So what happens when Mirror Gallery is in play and you turn Mizzium Transreliquat into a Memnarch... assuming that both of the "gain control" abilities resolve at the same time....? D____D

If you use it on itself, it will get an extra copy of its second ability. And you can do this repeatedly to give it many, many copies of that ability! However, it will lose them all if it permanently copies anything else...

I was reading the comments talking about this card with Isochron Scepter and Panoptic Mirror to get big instants and sorcereries on a stick. But could you make and cast copies of creatures by using Death-Mask Duplicant's imprint ability? What happens when Isochron Scepter has more than one card imprinted on it?

You can keep copying Colossus of Akros every turn and going monstrous to add ten more counters. Johnny/Timmy forever!

I didn't see any consensus in these posts, so I checked the web for a ruling, and found an answer by Camper11 on the MTG Salvation forums. It was posted in 2009, but it matches the text in the current comprehensive rules.

Unfortunately, Luke_BPC and Razbot are right. When an ability mentions "the exiled item", it is always linked with the previous ability that exiled the item. The ability will only work with items that were exiled with the linked imprint ability, not other imprint abilities. So when new abilities are gained, those new ones won't link to the old.

Current rulings (MagicCompRules 2013/11/01)

607.1. An object may have two abilities printed on it such that one of them causes actions to be taken or objects or players to be affected and the other one directly refers to those actions, objects, or players. If so, these two abilities are linked: the second refers only to actions that were taken or objects or players that were affected by the first, and not by any other ability.

607.2a If an object has an activated or triggered ability printed on it that instructs a player to exile one or more cards and an ability printed on it that refers either to "the exiled cards" or to cards "exiled with ," these abilities are linked. The second ability refers only to cards in the exile zone that were put there as a result of an instruction to exile them in the first ability.

I'm not entirely sure what it's supposed to do since people usually use artifacts as specific combo-pieces for their decks, but I suppose that's the fun of it.
