Well hey there Standard Burning Vengeance decks, didn't see you there!

This card is absolutely insane for reanimator strategies and any deck running Past In Flames. Anybody who rates this lowly has simply never played with Careful Study.

This card kicks ass. I love that you can discard whatever cards you want after drawing, even the cards you just drew if you decide you don't like them, which gets them off the top of the deck to allow a better card through. AND it has flashback! Fantastic.

I don't doubt that older cards like this were useful, but I was always afraid the card "disadvantage", but when you tack on flashback it suddenly seems like a really good deal.

This is pure card advantage because unlike some red draws, you get to decide what to pitch from your hand and not randomly

Especially good with flashback cards

This feels like "The hero that Gotham Deserves" for Red. This will enable Flashback, Madness, Unearth and Threshold which have all been waiting for a card in mono red to help them synergize. In standard I would like to play around with Chancellor of the Forge and looting.

What is there to say? Cheap card-draw, filtering, flashback/madness/unearth/threshold enabling in RED. It may not a rare or a mythic, but this is the card I want the most from DKA. Then again, as a pauper player I only want commons (which only makes this card all that much sweeter).

Wizards must want combo to be the red's domain. We've had a steady supply of red mana acceleration over the years -- Simian Spirit Guide, Manamorphose, Seething Song, Rite of Flame, Braid of Fire, Geosurge... and now we have a pretty powerful blue effect in red with Faithless Looting, and the new Yawgmoth's Will (which is astonishingly better than Yawgmoth's Will for only 1 cc more).

Awesome. All we need now is a red Tendrils of Agony.

Excellent card, but does the flashback make it better than Careful Study? Nope, Careful Study is blue.

Commander Review: Well first, it's not cardadvantage. You have only this card on your hand. You play it. You flashback it. How many cards do you have on your hand? None. So you actually spent cards and mana. What for? To dump five cards (this one and two for each time you cast the spell) from your hand or top of your library into your graveyard, and to increase the quality of cards you have on your hand, IF you have any cards left on your hand.
The card quality improvement part is cute, but not worth including the card. Dumping cards into your graveyard: it's ok if your commander deck uses that mechanic a lot. In a bladewing the risen deck this card is playable, for example. But adding it randomly without any definite combos to a deck is a stupid idea.

t1) Mountain, Faithless Looting (discard Worldgorger Dragon and something else)
t2) Swamp, Animate Dead, Comet Storm for the win.

Now to go find a format where that's legal (vintage, casual, and EDH FTW).

EDIT: I guess there was already
t1) Swamp, Entomb/Putrid Imp
t2) Mountain, Animate Dead, Comet Storm
but the more ways to do it, the better. Or worse, if you play with people who like to have fun.

@Salient "red Tendrils of Agony"
You mean Grapeshot and Dragonstorm?

Properly Faithless Looting is nigh impossible; to loot a church involves the involvement of places of faith existing to loot from, while looting anywhere BUT a church is being respectful to faith's boundaries.

...what on earth am I talking about? A bit smiliar to Desperate Ravings to my taste (I know its not very similar, but red does other things other than draw and discard), but is flavourful and efficient!

i'm a little disappointed that this doesn't read draw 3 then discard 2 at random. i mean its nice they finally figured out that noone will play cards that make them discard at random without much benefit, but why not give the extra benefit rather than take away the drawback? this card is blue, not red.

anyway. great card except for flavor¨¨

Up until now, Red is mostly about random discarding due to the piece it gets from the pie. And now they get a good filter that was once Blue, and reusable to boot.

This will be the most wanted common in this set. Like, it will totally find its way into most decks that run Red.

apparantly, this card is card disadvantage. You know, actually, I'm cool with that.

'Drawing cards' is the kind of effect all the colors should have-- actual 'card advantage' though, is something Red should still be weak at. This is a clever little card that lets Red use it for some somewhat specific things- it's good if you are trying to 'fake Entomb', but not good if you are trying to 'fake Ponder', or even 'fake Careful Study' (Gako is quite right. Careful Study is blue. That counts.)

This card is insanely over powered, the only downside to this card is being unable to get a positive effect out of it if its the only card in your hand, but even still if youre running unburial are the likes its 100 times better

this should of been a blue or black card

Better than people expect in red. Sure, it's card disadvantage, but when a red deck is staring at two mountains in its hand and not a single burn spell, it doesn't care one whit about card disadvantage.

This is a great card, but it's not card advantage. It's actually card disadvantage (unless you combine with flashback or madness and the like) because by playing it, even flashing it back, you end up with one card less than you started with. Here's how it goes -
Cast this spell (-1)
Draw two (+1)
Discard two (-1)
Flashback to draw and discard two again (no change, -1)

It's great card quality advantage - you get to pick and choose out of a big range of cards, and in the right decks you can still eke out card advantage. But on it's own, this card is a great example of card disadvantage.

Yes this is card disadvantage. However you can turn it into card advantage using cards that benefit from being in the graveyard like punishing fire and vengevine.

Card advantage is one of those things that's solid as a concept, but shouldn't guide every single decision or card choice. In addition to all the flashback/grave synergy cards mentioned throughout, there's also the late-game possibility of going through four cards in your deck to find exactly what you need to finish the job. Especially in limited.

Normally, for every {UR} combo deck out there, there's an insane red finisher powered by blue card filtering. This card marks the beginning of a long line of black madness/flashback/reanimator decks fueled by red card filtering.

Need to recur that Nyxathid and draw some cards? Call to the Netherworld can help you there.
Need to pay the cheaper black flashback on that Lingering Souls stuck in your hand?
Need to turn those Bloodghasts and Reassembling Skeletons into something useful?

O ye of little faith, it's time to loot and pillage.

It's great in current standard RDW, pitching those Chandra's Phoenixes and Thunderous Wraths that got stuck into your hand. Also lets you dig deeper for burn, and prevents getting manaflooded. All in all, it's great in RDW, and testing it in weird UWR control brew, it's great for pitching miracles that got stuck in your hand and increasing your card quality overall.

Love ya wizards for moving looting into red, and especially for this. This enables so many strategies.

Where to begin with this review of THIS card?

Loot faithless everybody! It's like the perfect common. It's sort of strictly better than Careful Study, and I'm still blow away by that. This and desperate ravings have made red card draw sexy again for the first time in a while. The simple fact that it puts cards from your hand in the bin is tremendous... there's some excellent synergy with this card and the cards in standard right now. And that's just standard for goodness sake! God I love this card. I opened up 3 and got 1 more. A wonderful card!

I challenge you to find a deck strategy that uses red that ISN'T infinitely better off with this card. As someone said earlier this card enables SO many strategies including ones that may have previously been unavailable to players mixing in {R}.

How bout {B}/{R} reanimator? Even weirder yet how about {R}/{W} angel reanimator with Defy Death? Opening hand have too many Demigod of Revenges? Loot 'em! {U}/{R} Burning Vengence deck? {R}/{G} graveyard/undying deck with Boneyard Wurm and Wreath of Geists, admittedly {U}/{G} probably works better. That's a pretty diverse set of options.

Generally prefer Dangerous Wager over this. As red, if my hand is empty, I'd HATE to top-deck this. On the other hand, the self-milling has saved my ass when I needed to find my Smelt against a Birthing Pod deck.

...except the times when I accidentally faithless loot my smelt into my graveyard. D'oh!

Its funny when you use this to discard Avacyn, Angel of Hope and then use Unburial Rites. To bring her back.
Griselbrand is a much stronger target, but Avacyn is good for the flavor and the beat stick.

This thinking is not just incorrect it's wrong.
In Abusive Decks:
Cast this spell (-1)
Draw 2 (+2)
Discard 2 Vengevine (+1 because you are cheating them into play, something that is otherwise not achievable always)
Total: +2 card
Faithless Looting = Ancestral Recall w/ flashback

In Fair Decks that can use it:
Cast this spell ( -1)
Draw 2 (+2)
Discard a Flashback Spell and a dead card(-0)
Total: +1
Faithless Looting = Divination for 1 mana w/ flashback

In completely fair decks that can't use it or abuse it:
Cast this spell (-1)
Draw 2 (+2)
Discard a gas card and a dead card (-1)
Total: +0 and fix your hand

And that's only on the first run. Faithless looting combos with itself for goodness sake, why is this rated lower then careful study???

This card is practically a win condition in standard reanimator decks running red. Bust out any creature in the game on turn 3 with this, discarding Unburial Rites and an Arbor Elf or Avacyn's Pilgrim previously played.

Combine with Library of Leng for as close to Brainstorm as red is ever going to get. Still, there's definitely something to be said about library and hand manipulation in monored.

3 commons and a possible lock on turn 3.
Ok Exhume should not exist but this loot is amazing in term of fixing.

I just noticed that this enables a possible deck archtype: R/B Burn-Reanimator

T1 - This, discard Anger and your choice fat
T2 - Animate Dead or Reanimate or Shallow Grave (Shallow grave means you don't need anger either)

Considering this more seriously; you could shallow grave an Inferno Titan on a good draw, giving yourself up to 12 haste damage; probably killing some defenders/utility creatures in the process. 12 on T2 is enough for burn to close T3 easily (Lightning Bolt, keldon marauders, Fireblast for example, not including their fetchlands or shocklands)

With proper reanimation cards you don't need the creatures to be in *your* grave either, meaning you aren't relying on it, you're letting it augment your burn into beatdown (steal tarmogoyf for example)

The main advantages I see in red are haste-granters, like Anger and Lightning Mauler. Consider Flametongue Kavu as it'll burn the defender and eat the opponent for 4. Consider Keldon Marauders as they can hit for a meaty 8 if they get haste, and allow you to recur them easily for little pain (the burn they give also hits walkers if you wish.)

Notice again, this deck has no reliance on it; it just reanimates brutal cards. Stick it next to standard burn, a set of Terminates and maybe Go For the Throat, and call it good.

You can add Burning Inquiry for disruption and more grave-filling, Grim Lavamancer to use excess fill.

Have a sideboard full of hate and side in stuff you need for Game 2 that changes the deck to full blown burn or some such. Now they'll have hate that doesn't help them and your deck is still a T4 clock, easy.

I love this, there are few cards in my Heartless Lich combo deck that I like seeing more.

There have been few cards in recent memory that I have enjoyed casting more. I don't usually like blah utility cards eating up my removal space but this card does it for me. Unless I'm in topdeck mode but the deck usually is prepared for that circumstance.

This card works so damned well with Pyromancer Ascension. It just adds a ton of consistency and options for really cheap. Red lets you filter your hand and load up your graveyard with copies of spells to get Ascension online. To top it off, casting flashback spells will put a counter on Ascension if you have another copy of the spell in the graveyard as it resolves! Run with Think Twice and Desperate Ravings.
