This card has some patheitc flavor text. . .

Oh hey, looks like they errata'd the flavor text in Oracle to remove Bolas's peculiar speech impediment.

First time I've seen a typo like that since 9th Edition Coercion.

Plus: Great new artwork.

Minus: Crappy card and total waste of a rare slot.

Minus²: A typo on a Magic card!! I've actually never seen that before... :<

what a patheitic reprint compared to rancor and rewind. even battle of wits sees more play than this. just patheitic...

I predict people will play this in Omniscience just because they can and it has Nicol Bolas' face on it. True, there are better things than Wit's End for ripping up minds, but it's difficult to argue with the visceral feeling of pseudo-power you get when you throw down a high-cmc card for free and it's got Nicol Bolas all over it. >>;D

Seems like this could have been attached to some creature. When I first saw this a for a secomd thought this was a creature card.

Awful, awful, awful .

Mind Sludge deserves core set treatment.

Nicol Bolas threw a crushing taunt at Jace, seeing the plans of the mind-mage fall apart amused him to no end and he revelled in the glory.

Then he realised that Beleren had, in fact, messed with his mind so much that he couldn't even speak or spell correctly.

What a useless card. So much for the Bolas seal of approval, where everything relating to him was at least playable.

I like the flavor because of the old Nicol Bolas from his elder dragon days
I don't like its cost
I don't like its sorcery speed

Would have been awesome at 1RedBlackBlue and an instant

Say the card is shit all you want (because it is), but don't think for a minute that Lord Bolas has problems speaking. I can assure you that he does not. Wizards is sure to be visited by the Lord soon, and he will not be happy.

This is one of the only rares i was disappointed in opening during the prerelease. It is too expensive and too slow for me to have used it, and I have little intention on finding a use for it in EDH as any potential slots for it are already full. unless you cheat it out your opponent won't have much of a hand by the time this comes out, rending it worse than most discard spells. I'll take mind twist or the one that is dependent on your swamps over this any day. It is truly patheitc.

Okay I love the flavor, because this is the kind of thing that Bolas does, but the rest of the card it pure crap.
Also, for those of us who are feeling a bit slow today, what is the spelling error they made?
adrian.malacoda
★★★☆☆ (3.9/5.0) (4 votes)
@Recino: They fixed it in gatherer, but on the printed card: "Your patheitc ideas..." Aside from that, the flavor text speaks directly to your opponent in the second-person, making this a first, I think. Lord of the Pit comes close.

I remember pulling Monomania as my first M12 Foil and cringed.

I knew it wasn't worth a thing, but this guy at my local comic store traded it plus a foil Dark Tutelage for a Birds of Paradise. Being Canadian, I asked multiple times if he was sure about this, and he replied,

"I collect *** foils anyway. And no one wants my Birds, so yeah. I'm sure".

My first M13 pack came with Touch the Eternal and a foil this.

I dunno if I'm cursed, or if I'm destined to play Mono-Black discard my whole life (my first deck was mono-black discard), but one thing's for sure:

I know who'd want it.

As others have said, "patheitc"

Another one of those effects that has to be overcosted to be balanced, and thus probably shouldn't see print anymore these days. Might have been funny as an instant, although there's probably some dumb way to break it then... oh, well.

The French version also has a spelling mistake in the flavor text that was corrected in the oracle text...

On the card, it's written:
Qu'est-il advenu de ta fierté arrogance ?

And in the oracle, it was corrected:
Qu'est-il advenu de ta fierté arrogante ?

I want to Conflux for this, Worldfire, Cruel Ultimatum (blue), and Academy Rector, and Progenitus (green).

1. Play Academy Rector.
2. Academy Rector for Omniscience.
3. Spam shit at the board till everyone dies :)

I think it would be fun to try to build a deck whose mana curve STARTS at 6, except for that Academy Rector xD

(How do I play the Conflux fast? :P)

Since I am pretending I am Nicol Bolas, I think this Manabase has no problems with it:

4x Mox Pearl
4x Mox Emerald
5x Mox Ruby
5x Mox Sapphire
6x Mox Jet

That's 24 right? :P I was told your manabase should be 24 cards. I'm new at this game but this looks powerful :)

This card is such a turd. Which is extra annoying because it has one of the best card names I've heard and a badass Nicol Bolas picture too.

I actually put this in my sealed Magic League deck since "ebb, Limited is Low powered anyway. It.was still a dead card in my hand every time I drew it, and I took that sucker out real fast.

Even though it's pretty bad this has applications in a slow control deck.

Last night at a M13 two-headed giant tournament I cast this thing on a guy and he dumped Garruk, Primal Hunter, Thragtusk, and a Fog. I thought he was at his Wit's End. We won that game, even though Sands of Delirium came close to milling us out. I love M13!

First appearances can be misleading, and this card was actually fun to cast. Cards that serve me well are always under my radar when building new decks.

How fitting that of all cards, it's "Wit's End" that happens to get printed with a typo.
How fitting that of all words, it's "pathetic" that happens to contain the typo. And due to that:
How ironic that of all planeswalkers, it's the one that can't spell the rebukes correctly who talks about arrogant pride.

The casting cost on this card is horrid...I anything above 4 CmC is too much. They need to start printing viable 3 cmc that forces a full hand discard. Because if you're waiting until you have 7 mana(5 if playing manomania), your enemy is likely to have 1 card in hand, maybe 3 if they are being conservative, and perhaps 6 if playing blue control...and this card wont resolve if that's the case! the new 3/3 for 4 is far better card design then this card!!

This could have just been a crap rare that I didn't have to care about. But then they put awesome art of Nicol Bolas on it, and it annoys me. The art doesn't even fit the card's ability...
This is a terrible card as others have said because by the time you get it out, your opponent probably doesn't have much of a hand anyway, especially if you're already playing discard. Why not go full on suicide black and make a cheap "discard target hand" spell that has some sort of relevant backlash?

It's even worse that they accidentally let a typo get through because now everybody's going to complain about that instead of the actual card. The typo's dumb, but it's not that important. Besides, I don't think Bolas' opponent can spellcheck a vocal monologue.

★★★☆☆ (3.0/5.0) (2 votes)
I think this card is meant to be linked flavor-wise to Omniscience: How do you stop someone who can cast everything for free? Strip them of things to cast. Plus, compare the artworks. Jace is all "WOW this is awesome!" and then Bolas shows up and ruins his fun.

(Of course, in reality the Wit's End gets mana leak'd because of its stupid high cost, but y'know)
Purplerooster
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.5/5.0) (1 vote)
Against most decks, 7 mana will be too late for this to be significant, but for decks with a lot of draw power this can be devastating.

@TheWrathOfShane: Those of use playing around in the Ravnica block when this was first printed thought this was crap, and still think this is crap now. Yes it's flashy but even with mana ramp you're unlikely to do much more than a Mind Rot couldn't have done - that is to say, even if you ramp in to casting this by turn 4 or 5, you're still probably only going to make them discard 2-4 cards. For the cost and speed of this card that's still not worth it.

It can be very valuable in formats like EDH against strategies like heavy card draw. But that's narrow, and the color of card draw is also the color of counterspells.

Wouldn't be nice to think that the typo was intentional? That someone other than Nicol Bolas was involved in it? Perhaps someone in the art? Someone who is so arrogant (powerful) he would NEVER allow them to call him "pathetic"?

Nicol Bolas is a dyslexic dragon - guess what? He's still bad mofo!

This card is just pathetic. That they choose to reprint it even more.
TheWrathofShane
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
This card is absolutely devastating when combined with mana ramp. The only thing that can stop me from blowing up your hand by turn 4 is Blue. And if you recklessly dumped your hand full of creatures out by turn 4, my life's finale will finish you off all the same. When this resolves, people scoop.

Edit: With the new Rakdos's Retur, this card is nothing in comparison. By the time you have 7 mana, return can trash 5 cards and blow up a walker, or their life. Plus you don't have to have 7 mana to use the return.

It's hard to say this isn't just worse then mind twist. If they wanted this to see EDH play they would have made it each opponent. This is actually just a bad card and too dangerous for multi-player games.

Yes, you need say more. I have no denial in running it in a commander deck with her, but I see zero synergy between the two. Jeleva deals with EXILED cards. Maybe with Carrion Beetles or something.

Being an instant would have shot up the rating of this card at least 1 star in my opinion. Say someone just played a Sphinx's Revelation or Blue Sun's Zenith at the end of your turn. If this were an instant you'd have something to punish them for that.

I don't even care about the mana cost. I know there are other discard choices available to black, and losing your hand is nothing to scoff at (even without more then 7 cards in it), but the fact is that, as a sorcery, this is an underpowered rare. That's what most bothers me about it.
theendgame
☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
The opinion towards this is very negative, but it would be absolutely insane any cheaper. I've only played it to a good result, and any time I needed to play it, I had the mana, and that's pretty easy with things like Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. 4/5
