Wizards has some strange sort of humor, but i had a good laugh nonetheless.

Did they need some really awkward cards for drafting?
Or were they in fact just like printing junk aside from the fact that Zendikar has lots of greatly playable black Vampire cards. Wait that's it, i guess they wanted to emphasize the huge contrast single-black colored and a double-black colored cards can have. If that's the case - awesome job! :D
Whatever the reason of making such a card was, this card takes in a new place in my "worst-cards-ever-collection".
Definitely a good pick for a Chimney Imp deck.

How could they possibly justify this card?

All I can think of is that maybe they have some other card in the upcoming set that makes thus suck less. Like a vampire that lets you play mindless null for free or something. Heck, I am grasping at straws here.

bwahaha! Scathe zombies is eliminated from the core set then we get this gem. Or should I say, turd. oh well, as WoTC frequently says, not every card can be the best card.

I'm usually the guy that says "oh, I'm sure there's a use for it..." but this time I have to say that I have found a truly useless card. Was Wizards trying to prove that I was wrong when I said everything could be potentially useful?

If every card were at least decent, decent would be the new crap. Bad cards are just a necessary part of the card economy, nothing to be done about it.

I understand that not every card can be the best card, but I don't understand why every card can't at least be a decent card. Cards like this seem to just be a waste of ink, paper, and plastic.

EDIT: Every card being decent wouldn't automatically make decent "the new crap". Just because something is normal or average doesn't mean it's automatically terrible. As long as a card has a use at an acceptable mana cost, it's going to be played by someone. This card is only going to see play in Limited, and even then most players will probably just add or draft an additional land rather then running the risk of drawing this. Especially in Zendikar.

why wizards why?
this card is so OBVIOUSLY below any curve that there really is no excuse.

I love how they tried to justify the existence of this card. "After seeing the public's reaction" they knew they made the right decision......? What the hell is in the wizard kool-aid? The public's response has been nothing but disgust. Why make crap cards that will only be picked in limited AND ONLY if there is absolutely nothing else to pick. All it does is take up space in a pack, increasing the need to buy more packs in order to get at least some cards that are not completely worthless. I think I just answered the question.

From Mark Rosewater's Making Magic column Monday, October 19, 2009:
"The original version of this card was as you see it except for 1Black. The card was created by Ken during the vampire design. Ken turned over his card designs to Henry (Stern) to put into the set. Henry typed the card in incorrectly as 2Black instead of 1Black. When the mistake was noticed, most of R&D found it funny and the card was kept as is."

It's not even that rare with cards this hilariously bad. Viashino Skeleton, Bog Hoodlums, Frazzle and Chimney Imp are some examples from more recent years.

i cant believe the only reason they printed it for 3 mana instead of 2 like they were originally supposed to is cause they found it "funny". cmon wizards this card actually could've been useful for vampire players and now its useless. a nantuko husk will always replace this. i hope they take their job a little more seriously next time. or we might see an 8/8 for 1 mana, with no drawback, cause it made them giggle.

Makes more sense that it was supposed to be 1B. Amazing how one mana makes the difference between being average/usable to being just plain junk. Every card should be useful in *some* way. I'm glad R&D find it "funny." I don't know how amused everyone else is. It's not so funny when I open a pack and get this card when I could be getting a plated geopede, kor skyfisher, or goblin bushwacker. It's not funny to waste people's money, even 25 cents of it.

I like how Wizards FINALLY stopped printing the useless scathe zombies in every core set and replaced it with something better, and then next set we get THIS, a card inferior to scathe zombies in every way...
I didn't think it was possible for WotC to print a card strictly worse than scathe in every situation... but I guess nothing is impossible if the developers agree.

A 2/2 with drawback for 2Black! It's the first time in my life that I don't care if something happens to this card whitch is currently at my toilet.

This card would've been terrible even by Homelands standards. It's actually kind of nostalgic to see awful underpowered creatures like this. Makes me long for my first games of Magic, where we'd just take the huge box of junk cards someone's older brother gave us, each take all the cards of a single color, and proceed to hammer at each other with Gray Ogre and Silver Erne.

One difference I've noticed aside from the power level is that for a long time there seemed to be a pretty clear formula for how much total power/toughness you get for your mana: 2 for 1, 4 for 2, 5 for 3, 6-7 for 4, 8-9 for 5, 10-11 for 6. Special abilities like flying, first strike, or trample were worth 1 power or toughness point. If you wanted to print a creature that was stronger than its mana cost would allow, you gave it drawbacks, which made players think hard about how to minimize those drawbacks or even turn them into advantages. Now, there doesn't seem to be any clear formula - sometimes you still get something like this, sometimes you get like a 4/4 for 4, and sometimes you get something like a Baneslayer Angel for 5. For 6 mana or greater, they seem to have decided that creatures can be as big as you want with no drawback. Obviously I wouldn't want a return to the days of horribly underpowered creatures, but I still think some consistency would be nice.

Is anyone else upset that wizards didn't have Kalastria Highborn do what we expected? She could've made the nulls cheaper to throw out, She could've allowed you to use as many nulls in the deck as you wanted, done something to create them every turn by sapping life out of you or some other creature. Something. It could've been kinda cool but instead we get an unplayable zombie made worse by the fact they did nothing to make it useful.

Man when I opened this pack one at a draft it was an easy windmill slam. I literally ***ed my pants in happiness, then I read the card, and pooped my pants in awe of the awesome ability (causing the players next to me to leave the table) I mean who doesnt want a first pick that already puts you in an archtype! And even in constructed! If you have a vampire in play, then this beast can actually BLOCK one of the most format defining cards ever printed, (I of course speak ofRaging Goblin) Plus it survives removal (assuming you have a counterspell, or instant speed protection backup) Easy 5 stars!

Even for 2 mana this would be underpowered. Vanilla 2/2s for {1}{Color} are pretty standard these days, and it's not unheard of to get a 2/2 with a minor ability for that price. If it cost {B} it would probably actually see play in vampire decks despite being a zombie.

Will you people quit bitching? Zendikar was overpowered by ANY standard, and if it weren't for the possibility of things like this taking up common slots, every pack would have sold out in a week, just like the Innistrad incident. True, it is a mistake, and Wizards did think it was funny, but you know what? It was. Just like Chimney Imp, a card this awful in a set this amazing just highlights the good and bad parts of the set, and makes it easier for new players to know what to draft. 0.5/5, sure, hell 5x10^-42/5, but it's funny, and kind of necessary. You know what? This is a well-built card, flavourfully.

As the flavour text says, this zombie is a product of weaker vampires. They turned some poor sap into this brainless thing: unable to think for itself, unable to understand basic motor functions. The weaker vampires don't have the skill to make it any better, so that's why it can't block.

I mean, it's worthless inside limited, but at least it makes sense why it is worthless.

There are way worse cards in this game and this doesn't deserve as low of a rating as it has. It can still attack guys. WotC has printed things like 1/1s for 5 that are rated higher than this.

The reason it has such a low rating is that more newer players paid attention to it, and they're used to the power creep.

I'd say keep the flavor and reduce the cost but don't make it good. The flavor makes up for it. I'd make it 1Black and change the ability to "Mindless Null can't attack unless you control a Vampire", which makes a lot more sense to me. If it can't think for itself it would still defend itself if prodded into harm's way but it wouldn't take the initiative.
