It should have gained 2 life, tbh. As it is now, it's really underpowered.

This card isn't too underpowered, considering the affinity aspect that was in its block, along with all the artifact retrieval that was present as well. I paired this card with a Genesis Chamber or two, whenever anyone plays a creature, you're gonna gain a life. Then I threw in an Echoing Ruin, targeting a myr-token while having a Disciple of the Vault or two on the field :D

The only one-mana cat with normal power and toughness. No really. Look it up.

Where Disciple of the Vault was banned in a few blocks, this card works the same way. for people who don't know the combo, Krark-Clan Ironworks, 2 Myr Retrievers, and Disciple of the Vault, keep sacrificing the retriever to get your 2 mana, put em back into play then repeat. A fast kill, the opposite can be done for infinite life with Leonin Elder and is totally legal!!

Disciple of the Vault didn't get banned because of any infinite loop, it got banned because of Ravager Affinity, same reason the Artilands were banned. This card would never be used in that way, because it doesn't single-handedly end games, it prolongs them.

Far better than DotV in multiplayer. Also benefits control decks rather than aggro; it's just a matter of archetype.

Good card in affinity and artifact decks with artifact lands. With 50+ artifacts in a deck, I would consider this card. With Scars of Mirrodin and other new artifacts, you might gain a few life from opponent's artifacts too. This card could be a beast in multiplayer.

Why this cat is rated so low I really don't quite understand. He pales in comparison to disciple of the vault of course, and he's perhaps not quite as versatile as soul warden. However, with with the sheer amounts of artifact creature token production and artifact recursion that's out there, the elder will be gaining you huge amounts of life nonetheless, in the right deck, and for a flat fee of one white mana. That's a dang good deal.

There is only 1 honest comment of any relevancy you can make about this card:

If you want to know the difference between life GAIN and life LOSS, look up Disciple of the Vault.

This is roughly one ten-thousandth as good as Disciple of the Vault. Even the game's most powerful life-gaining spells cannot begin to touch Disciple's power.
