I remember a time before Life from the Loam, when this was the worst Magic card ever.

I don't think its' as bad as some people make it out to be. I mean, it's a good anti-Crusible of Worlds, but apart from that... Meh.

its not a bad card, it just ends up being redundant in every game you will ever play simply because you will almost definitely not find a useful application for this card except for possibly a card to cast by floating mana before an Armageddon/Oblitorate

I supose the nature of Odyssey block means each color needs to have some graveyard-hate, but this just sucks. Having it remove all artifact cards as well would still be in color, as would having it deal damage equal to the number of cards removed.

The reason this is so terrible is that there are way cheaper and more efficient ways to do the same job better. Relic of Progenitus, for instance.

My friend has a Seismic Åssault/land-reanimation deck. In other words, the theme of it is fetching lands, discarding them for damage, and getting them back from the graveyard.
This card doesn't even shut that deck down. Seriously.
What a piece of crap. 0.5/5

It sure trumped all those pesky "return target land from your graveyard to your hand" cards that ran rampant back in Odyssey block.
Why not just use Tormod's Crypt; which costs nothing and does more???

Why not use Tormod's Crypt?
Tormod's Crypt has to be in play, so your opponents can play around it. A Mudhole in response to their Crucible of Worlds has a massive suprise factor.
Furthermore, having a Mudhole resolved against you is the surest way to be put on permanent life tilt. Even if your opponent wins the match, they will most likely spiral into depression and commit suicide in the next few years.

Oh yeah, well the next time you have no lands in your graveyard and your opponent, who has twenty lands in his, is attacking you with four terravores and all you have in hand is a lousy Black Lotus, you'll be sorry you made fun of poor ol' Mudhole.
There really is a good reason to play this card in EDH: players who haven't seen it before will laugh until tears force their way out of their eyes.
The whole rest of the game (hell, the whole rest of the weekend) you'll hear people exclaiming, "Tarv??? TARV???"
Jokes about the utter mediocrity of Storm Crow are old by now. Hardly anyone has ever seen Mudhole. Everyone will get more sheer enjoyment out of this card than any other card they play. Nobody will remember who won the game that day; they'll just remember the asshat who played a @#$%ing Mudhole. And that's what EDH is all about!

Uh. . . It's a red card I can discard to Chandra Ablaze, and that's about it.
They could have tacked "Target creature gets -0/-X until end of turn, where X is the number of land cards removed this way" onto it. Would have made for interesting removal in land destruction decks as well...
As is, I want to order a foil one online. Because playing that will result in widespread hilarity.

Honestly? I think this is a good Rare.
Wait, just hear me out. I didn't say it is a good card, in fact it is a horrible card as there is no support for it. There is no real strategy that this helps/hoses. But as an example of what rarity should mean, it is great. Rarity should NOT be synonymous with power (as many newer sets seem to be trying to disprove). Rarity should be about the uniqueness of the card and it's mechanics. This is pretty unique (even if it is outclassed by other 'yard-hate).

Somehow -Somehow!- , this was the inspiration for Tragic Slip.
I really tried to find a way to play this, the johnny in me tried, he did. This can't do anything in 90% of games, I can't even justify it's use in a mill deck because if someone re-shuffles their graveyard, I'd like them to get only land, not the opposite. I guess it hoses like one or two incredibly specific decks.
Still better than Sorrow's Path, Wood Elemental, Break Open, and their ilk on the sole fact that at the very least, casting it isn't (usually) detrimental to you. At worst it's just a spell that does practically nothing.
That said, its uses are extremely limited, and I don't know why you wouldn't just play Tormod's Crypt and/or Rakdos Charm if you really wanted to wipe out all lands from someone's graveyard.

This was made to deactivate someones threshold. If they wanted to keep it land only, it should cost and draw a card.
Or keep it this same cost, but have it deal 1 damage for each land removed this way.

I actually have a land sac deck based on Terravore and Countryside Crusher that would get screwed pretty badly by this.
"Sup Balthor. I heard you had a problem with that spell I gave you"
"Yeah Nicol Bolas. It... It doesn't really achieve anything. And now my boots are dirty"
"Oh really? That Terravore that I murdered a few days back didn't think so! Look, I know I screwed you over with that Ember Shot, but trust me on this one... just trust me."

Wow, so many haters, I'm shocked this card doesn't have a higher rating. I actually think this card is really useful, for several reasons. I run an Izzet storm/draw deck with a mana curve of almost solely 1, 2, and a few 6 cmc cards. Because the deck is purposefully designed to make you mill like crazy, I pack it with resets like Time Reversal and Elixir of Immortality, which will both help you draw more, and keep you from killing yourself. In a longer match I'll usually hit about thirty cards in the graveyard and start resetting by turn eight to ten, the problem at this point is cycling my mana ramp. When I hit the reset I wind up with all of the Terramorphic Expanses, Evolving Wilds and Scalding Tarns in my hand, when all of my mana is already in play. These cards are now the only thing preventing a win, because they keep me from drawing till a nuke like Grapeshot.
For three mana, Mudhole lets me reset only the important cards of the deck. Given, that's a lot of mana and it really isn't worth it if I'm playing right, but I see a lot more potential for this card in small decks that burn cards too quickly. If you're trying to set up a mana ramp in a deck with no curve and cmc of 1, this solves a lot of issues.

If you're using this on yourself, Harvest Pyre cost 1 less and can take out an opponent's creature to offer you some protection when you use it. There is literally no reason to ever use mudhole.
Scavenging ooze if you try to shock it and they pump it with fetch lands. I just don't see how this is rated one star, I'll rate it 2.5 because it's not terrible
It is hilarious that, by doing enough combat damage to Tarmogoyf and already having an instant and a land in a graveyard, you can cast this and actually kill a Tarmogoyf.
