They got the colors wrong on this one - one healing vampire doesn't justify this forced strange color combo - but still - there is always potential in disadvantage.

This card is a ton of fun... in that it encourages you to play cards you really shouldn't. Lot's of drain life effects and lifelink. It might cost a bit too much, but I think it is a real success.

An awkward enchantment, but it has tremendous combo potential. One primary example (especially in a deck with access to life gain and loss) would be Tainted Sigil.

Better than most of the enchantments in the set. It is really nice when you think about creatures with lifelink doing double the damage with this out.

I very much agree with the Lulz comment. This is just silly with my life-gain decks. The Orzhov clan will do very well in the casual circuits with this enchantment!

So when a vampire is healing, someone else is bleeding. Awesome concept. Guess vampire planeswalkers will be more powerful now with this card in their libraries.

This card can be good in the right circumstances. For one, it makes basic lifegain spells that much more viable. You tend to think a lot differently of angel's mercy when it becomes burn 7 gain 7 for 4 rather than just lifegain. Best w/b combos with this card - necromancer's covenant, tainted sigil, tendrils of corruption, deathgreeter, soul warden. however, fairly high cost, and very situational. Needless to say, by itself, or as a topdeck, this card fails completely. 4/5

This would be good with Soul Link. This card isn't as much for a black deck than a black/white lifedrain deck.

I run 4 in my monoblack deck. A lot of black cards such as Tendrils of Corruption, Consume Spirit and Child of Night makes this enchanment a must have.

This card will most likely find its best use in W/B decks, or maybe even B/G decks.
But Johnny will definitely also be happy about the new use for his Illusions of Grandeur.

Here`s how I do it with b/w/b deck... and why I gave it 5/5
Combo1
Setup :
Sanguine Bond and Tainted Sigil on field.
Play:
Bond of Agony
What happens:
I usually play bond of agony when I see that someone has low life, Lets say I pay 10 life and I have 6 opponents, so thats 70 life lost in total, Now we use tainted sigil, and gain 70 life, and now we use the Sanguine bond to screw somebody with 70 life loss. Sweet, ain't it?

Combo2
Setup:
One unblockable life link creature with toughness atleast 5 on field.
Play:
Play Magister Sphinx, Attack the the player targeted by Magister Sphinx ability.
What happens:
It`s a 1 hit kill ;). Magister Sphinx comes in play, your targeted oponent total life becomes 10, you attack with the unblockable lifelink creature, gain 5 life, deal the last 5 damage with Sanguine Bond to that player. This is how I crack the guys with insanely high life amount.

Combo3:
Setup:
Souls of the Faultless on field.
Play:
Wait till oponent attacks with combat damage that is at least 1/2 of it`s own life.Play Simulacrum.
What happens:
You don`t block it. Let it hit you. Play Simulacrum, it rewinds all the received damage and redirects it to one of your creatures, which in this case is Souls of the Faultless. And now the fun starts, he looses life equal to damage he done attacked, you gain that much life (SotF ability) and now you do the rest of the damage with Sanguine Bond.

Combo4
Setup:
Sanguine Bond and Tainted Sigil on field.
Play:
Stronghold Discipline
What happens:
This works extremely well against elf or wolf decks. As loosing 60 life for 60 saprolings/elves or wolves isn`t enough you gain alot of life thnx to tainted sigil, then punish somebody with the amount of total life lost by all players :)

Summary:
+ : Some good 1 hit kill strategies become possible. Great addition to life-link decks.
- : To unleash it`s full potential a long preparation is required. High manacost.

I hope this will be helpfull and inspiration to some new strategies.

This card is the staple of any black/white deck. puts the game in standstill from fear of souls of the faultless,

my favorite use of this card was in a multi game and we just got it down to 2 people and i dropped this on the turn before my heroes remembered popped, GAME OVER.

Why does everyone have such long complicated strategies with this one? There are three really really easy ways to make this enchantment work for you.

Strategy 1:

Celestial mantle + sanguine bond. Any time your enchanted creature deals damage to opponent in combat you double your life points, even if this only happens once and your life points are say.. 15.. you deal 15 damage instantly, and if your using a 5 damage creature with lifelink, you just won the game instantly in one attack.

Strategy 2 as mentioned by another poster:

Blood tribute + sanguine bond. Drains half opponents life, healing your life total, then sanguine bond does the rest of that damage from the life gain, also instant win.

Strategy 3:

lots of mana + scourge of the nobilis and a red/white creature + soul's fire + sanguine bond. Have soul's fire used by your lifelink creature, use whatever mana you have to boost its power before you use it, and do an instant 10 - 15 damage, which is doubled by sanguine bond when you gain the life from lifelink, and instant win.

So, theres 3 really simple ways to use it that require no more than 3 cards and you don't have to work in odd ones you wouldn't really use anywhere else. For simplicity sake, sorin markovs ability would also cause an extra 2 damage each turn for those mono black decks.

I wish I had this card, I was doing 2 v 1 and I had insane life gain via filigree angel and master transmuter comboing ( at the high moment I had 3 master transmuters doing their thing for 99 life gain a turn), and I ended up with 765 life, but then I lost to a phage the untouchable. >.< and the two people I were playing were down to 6 life.

Don't forget ye olde Fastbond, Zuran Orb, Crucible of Worlds combo with this, since those three, a Sanguine Bond, and a forest, swamp and one other land is a turn two win, first if you go second with a land draw. But that's for player to whom "restricted" means nothing and whose pockets run deep.

I like the idea of running four of these in a deck with four of Sun Droplet. It might not be the most effective way to kill someone, but you can have fun watching them squirm every time you pull out another Droplet. They won't attack you again until they break the combo or have enough power to finish you in one blow.

This and Boon Reflection are insane together. Black/white could pull out a ridiculous amount of damage very quickly. Drain Life is another one, and combos with spirit link are obvious. Whew!

There are a ton of combos that can be played in black/green as well.

Spoils of Evil + Stream of Life = BLAM.

I have one of these in my mono-black vampire deck. I love it. It works so well with the vampire game mechanic of your opponent losing life, and you gaining life. Not to mention, the artwork is just so cool.

@SoulProxy
The Tainted Sigil combo wouldn't work as the sigil would just be one count of life gain, so only one opponent could be dealt 70 damage.

I used it in vampire, and that was okay. Then I made a Necropotence deck and of course I will have more than one Ivory Tower on the field. Have a Sanguine Bond, and each Ivory Tower will have it's own count of life gain. Ten damage to two, three opponents each upkeep. Completely feels like being in control of a death ray like in the old superman cartoons.

OH, cool, awesome, hot, nice. I was thinking for several weeks now and I actually think that this card works with anything that gains you life.

Just think if you had like FOUR of these enchantments out- with four Doubling Seasons. OMG, y'all. Why, you would gain so much life if you were to say, play a Fracturing Gust. I can't believe no one else has mentioned this cool combo yet......................................................................................
.................................................................................................................. ................. ................................................................................................. ........................................... ..................................................................................... .................................. .............................................................................................. ............................................................... ............................................................ .................................................. ............................................................. ............................................................................... ................ ....................... ................................................................................... ..........................................

... and then you could play a Reborn Hope to return your Fracturing Gust to your hand to deal with the next idiot that plays with those stupid aforementioned cards.

like most enchantments these days, it provides a global effect that, unless paired with consequent spells or abilities, is useless.

it is quite shaky at the fringe-of-typeII-playable mana cost of 5. and in today's removal heavy standard, it mightn't have a place. (maelstrom pulse, quasali pridemage, negate)

i like to think of it this way, if i cast it and have a vamp, i'm in a great position to bluff. do i have blood tribute or not, they ask. they can't take the risk, and so must do something about it. a bluffing opportunity to me, screams potential for a magic player's true talent to shine.

also, for all those saying it's too expensive, one mana less and everyone would be complaining about how broken it is. keep things in retrospect please.

@SoulProxy: 2 things, in your magister sphinx combo i think you mean power not toughness and your SotF combo doesn't work. The Souls only work with combat damage, and simulacrum is not combat damage. It would work, however with stuffy doll, just the bond would make them lose life= to the damage dealt to you and then stuffy doll would hit them for the same amount.

Erik's Random card 6/24/2011
This card was not in the design hand off. Instead, design put in Oversold Cemetery.

However Alara block had a lot of cycling creatures, and our FFL was soon based around Oversold Cemetery generating +1 card per turn, with various disruptive effects. The FFL'rs asked for this to be replaced, so I made it a hole. That means that this card does not exist, and we will be back with another card soon.

I sent out a batch of "hole submission requests" with lose de***ions such as "a rare black non-creature card." I tend to send out about 5 or so in a batch. If there are too many, people look at the long request and often send nothing.

Later we had a meeting to look at each of the holes, the submissions, the rest of the file, and figure what should go in. Typically our printout of the file is in WUBRG order, so I like to put the submission in the same order. When we got to the "rare black non-creature card" hole, Matt Place started reading his copy of the submissions and asked if we really needed to go through the full process. This card is awesome, and was a unanimous to pick. So while everyone read all the submissions, there wasn't much to debate.

A big feature of M10 was changing the nature of Vampires. Before M10, Vampires were mostly the single powerful monsters, and sets tended to have 1 or 2 of them. M10 was changing it so Vampires could be a tribe. This card was an awesome fit, and I put "Curse of the Vampire" into the set.

Creative made a more fitting name; they also made awesome flavor text, almost like a conservation of blood.

i run a black white deck, based around stopping whatever my opponent is doing and bleeding them to death.
pillory of the sleepless
pacifism
arrest
oblivion ring
cards like that to slow them down, then things like agent of masks, blind hunter, and the aforementioned pillory to bleed them.
sanguine makes nearly every card in the deck so much better.
faith's fetters becomes an arrest on steroids, plus an 8 point life swing, for 4 CMC, and souls of the faultless means you lose double your attacker's power.

while it requires a bit more of a specific build than most cards, it is damn good.

Yea its good and all it just costs a lot. I can see essence warden and blood seeker going well with this theme.

Theres a running joke at the game store i got to. It goes; "..yea but its not as good as Sanguine Bonds"
Its funny because the worst player in the store is constantly comparing how good sanguine bond is to every card. lulz. Its an alright rare but nothing to write home about. Every time someone is amazed at how awesome a new found card is i always hear someone chime in from the back, "Yea but its not as good as sanguine bonds."

This thing plus Tainted Sigil and a lifelinker = owned.

Let's say you swing with your 6/6 flying lifelink Serra Ascendant (as if that card is not broken on its own):

Ascendant swings for 6. You gain 6 life, Tainted Bond kicks in, opponent loses 6 life (that's 12 lost already).

Rock the Tainted Sigil, you gain 12 life, Bond kicks in, opponent takes 12 damage.

Result: ouch.

four-player game, I'm using my monoblack Vamp deck, and I'd been pretty quiet all game. little spot removal on creatures coming after me, but nothing big. I almost have to sneak up on people with this deck.

turn 5 is where it got hilarious. drop Gauntlet of Power, chose black. next turn, Wound Reflection and Sanguine hit the board. next turn, Diabolic Tutor for the second Sanguine and dropped it.

turn 7? that's when Blood Tribute gets used. Blood Tribute hits first opponent - he's at just over 30 life. He loses 16, I gain it. I then redirect 16 damage to each other opponent - once for each Sanguine. all opponents then take another 16 damage from Wound Reflection. 'gg nubz lol'
