A simulacrum is something that resembles something else, usually a god or the like. In this case, it is pretty much making the creature a simulacrum of the caster, so the creature takes the place of the caster, and thus the damage.

I saw no "rules" discussion on this card.

However, it seems to me you can cast this
card without having a creature in play.

It also seems to me, that you can use this
with say Sanguine Bond to create a reverse
damage.

Thoughts?

@ QuietWarketer.

The way the oracle text is now you can combo with sanguine bond to make your opponent lose life (downside is you have to survive the damage before you gain the life back).

But you can't play it without a creature under your control because it needs a legal target to resolve (like all targeted spells).

I'm running 3 of these old-school gems in a deck with Saber Ants and Broodhatch Nantuko. Great fun.

use with Stuffy Doll. Now your opponent just killed himself.

Can somebody please tell me where it says "You gain life equal to the damage dealt to you this turn." on ANY version of this card? I haven't found a single one representing this ability, yet it's stated everywhere on the internet. How am I supposed to convince my opponent that this is the case?

Batwing Brume doesn't require you to be able to survive the damage before helping you and doesn't require a creature to be able to be cast.

Hopgoblin, I don't think you understand how oracle works. Oracle lists the most up to date wording for a card - what it says on the Gatherer page are the actual rules for the card, not the stuff printed on the card. The current rules make no provision for damage to be "retroactively" moved to a creature from you, so it's now worded in a way that works within the rules (gaining life).

No need for Cho-Manno; this card combos with any creature that has Pro: Black.

@Fermidirac : simulacrum can't target a creature with protection from black, so there's no synergy.

@Hopgoblin.
The damage is still done to you over the course of the turn. Once you play this card it adds up all the damage you acquired since the last Beginning Phase (Untap, Upkeep, Draw). You GAIN the life from the damage you took. You had to take the damage for this to be affected. The only way to "retroactively apply" it would be for you to GAIN it back. Then all the added up damage is sent down to the creature targeted. If after this spell resolves, your opponent targeted you with Shock, you still receive this damage, and subsequently lose of life.

Damage prevention isn't something you see a lot of in black, so this gets points from me right away. If nothing else, it makes for a makeshift Fog.

It was a must have in my old early black decks, but it's probably unplayable now.

QUESTION: Due to the recent change in the rules text of this card, do you actually need a creature to be able to use this card?

SCENARIO: You get attacked for 10 damage. You cast this. Looking at the rules, you gain 10 life. "You gain life equal to the damage dealt to you this turn." Then you search for a creature to have the 10 damage dealt to. "Simulacrum deals damage to target creature you control equal to the damage dealt to you this turn." If you have no creatures, what happens then?

Take for example, the following card (probably a poor example of many). Unbreathing Horde. You have this card out with a Cemetery Reaper. Now, damage is dealt to the Unbreathing Horde, and let's say, it already has zero +1/+1 counters on it (but is still alive from the Cemetery Reaper's buff). The rules state to prevent all damage and remove a +1/+1 counter from Unbreathing Horde, however it is common knowledge that because it is buffed from the reaper, the Horde cannot die, regardless of whether or not a +1/+1 counter is removed (it certainly doesn't say, "If a +1/+1 counter cannot be removed, sacrifice Unbreathing Horde" etc etc).

So the same situation then arises in this instance, where it doesn't specifically say "If you don't control a creature, you can't cast Simulacrum". It even has a whole full stop betwen the life gain and damage to creature portions of the rules. It doesn't say "If not creature can be found, the damage is reapplied to your life total".

Thoughts? I'll be checking back here for answers.

Spells require legal targets to be cast, so you must control a creature to cast Simularum.

Comboing with Stuffy Doll, Boros Reckoner, or Spitemare seems like a good idea. Other than that, Darkness may be a more effective Fog for a mono-black deck.
