A great Kismet variant that actually does something if you draw it in the late game. Also, if it isn't going to be very effective against the deck you're against (e.g. a slow control deck) it is not completely useless

I'm a casual player who likes building aggro/tempo decks.
That being said, I fear this card, A LOT.
But I'm not so biased as to downrate this card, this actually gives control players an opportunity to have a more stable game, that's cool with me. More diversity.

Extort is a slow ability, but this equally slows down your opponent.
I give it a good/5

A Kismet variant that might actually see Standard play. Both aggro and control can make use of this.

I can see this shutting down RDW for the forseeable future.

I should also add that I would side in War Priest of Thune if I wanted to shut this card itself down.

I would say, on average, the large majority of players have very litte destroy-enchantment spells. Now they may reconsider.

Two-mana card slot, ahoy!

A perfect addition to any extort deck, Orzhov deck or any one with Ethereal Armor since it affords you extra chances to attack without worry and enchantment +1/+1's. Use Gift of Orzhova too, cause i said so. Oh, and don't forget One-thousand Lashes for more lockdown.

Love this card, the cost, the name, the extort, the card type and the art... 5/5 for sure.

Whoa aggro decks, we like to take it slow(or just faster than you). :P

I can see a Boros deck running this actually to get in for extra points. Cheap enough to work in a lot of decks, with an ability most of them want. I really like this card.

This isn't anti-aggro. This is pro-aggro. The thing this is anti towards is haste. Still anti-haste is something that could easily be good enough with several relevant cards all being hasty.

This card scares me. 2 CMC for non-land permanents to enter tapped? ( Let's be honest, when was the last time you cared whether an enchantment or planeswalker was tapped? )

And while people are saying this hoses Boros, why would you play Boros and NOT run this card? All your little hasters will face fewer blockers.

running at least 2 of this in any deck i can rationalize white - too good of an effect to allow opponent to play one removal and think they don't have to worry about it anymore.
great against aggro, great for aggro too

This card is disgusting.

RDW's? Not anymore.

U/W flash? No more block tricks.

Various other aggro decks have hasty creatures to speed them along early game.

The extort is going to do so much work the longer this enchantment sticks around. I'll be using three or four main board.

P.S. 'dat art. 5/5.

This card is for agro imo
It stops blockers makes every nonland card relevant
For burn it takes 7 cards that are 3 damage per card
It takes 5 cards for 4 damage a peace
Creatures are a gamble in that they deal 0 to any amount per turn
With hasters and no blockers your looking at at least 4 damage

Basically this is a math card of incremental and not so obvious relevence
It makes each card relevent abd allows you to attack

I think its incredible

I think this could be at the heart of a slow, grindy control deck. It slows the opponent down by a turn forever if it stays on board, has an ability tacked onto it that will actually win the game for you, and it isn't a dead card if you draw multiples because it gives you an additional extort trigger. Potentially a major sleeper card in this set.

As soon as I get this, it's going straight into my Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer EDH deck. Anti-haste and extort seems like a really good combination, especially for control-style decks.

I love this card 5/5.

This card is going to become a staple in multiple formats. It has a good cast cost and is one sided.

In standard it will be used to prevent flash blocking shenanigans with Restoration Angel, creatures with haste such as Thundermaw Hellkite and Obzedat, Ghost Council, and a little bit for the extort.

In modern it will shut down recycle decks like Eggs.

Thank god - a mana cheap card that tells Kiki-Jiki and Restoration Angel to go canoodle somewhere else. Given how effective Kiki is in Modern, I could easily see this making the sideboards of a lot of competitive decks.

Heeeey so THAT'S how to show Hastiness towards Haste. So basically, if being Hasty is their thing, don't put off getting this card, I mean.. Make Haste on that if you wanna make HASTE bow down. lol

Such a well constructed card. Great effect, and one of the best thing about it is if you're running 4 copies, is not necessarily redundant and you could actually use the other copies for the extort mechanic rather than have a good effect that does not help if you draw multiple copies. And for those who don't get the card's flavor:

The creatures coming into play tapped represents them bowing to you, "blindly obeying to you" so to speak, just as the man is in the picture. They don't have the choice to come into play tapped, they just do. I hope that helps.

Anyway, great card, will def look to make a deck around this card in modern with Luminarch Ascension and cheap spells to abuse the extort mechanic.

What I think is this card plays great with Azzorious detain ability, for a control deck, that also allows you to take advantage of the Extort. And with out it also affecting lands, makes it not over powered. but just right. a solid 4/5 card!

Insanely powerful and cheap cost enchantment that can just shut down some aggro decks. I use it in my B/W exalted along side Blood Artist and lots of other cheap cost cards which allows the activation of the extort with that extra mana you'll have in later turns. I love it. 5/5

This card is OP. I use it in my Vish Kal EDH deck which is more of a slow, controlish deck, and in my Tajic EDH deck which is voltron aggro.

It stops aggro in its tracks, and allows you to gain some life to keep yourself in the game.

It also stops players from getting blockers in the way of your creatures. On top of that, it slows down artifact acceleration. It also provides a tiny bit of reach.

@St_Shiro if by your question you mean can you play a card with the phyrexian symbol in any deck, no, the color of the symbol reflects its color identity.

★★★★★ (5.0/5.0) (1 vote)
I use this card in a way I probably shouldn't in my WhiteBlueBlack control deck, which is to disable opponent's creatures for one turn before I use Pacifism- or Oblivion Ring-style effects, kill spells or permanent tap abilities such as Dungeon Geists. It works pretty well, even if it doesn't affect anything other than blocking and haste.

@Ratoly
True, but the White or Black symbol is in the reminder text, so it isn't used when determining colour identity- it can be used in any commander deck including White, even if Black isn't allowed. The same goes for the other extort cards- it's only activated abilities and casting cost that determines colour.

Extort is great in 2HG. White or Black for a four point swing? Yes, please.

This sitting on the board doing work for several turns also exposes how many decks are built to go for it without considering removal. Four please... and an Argivian Find to help keep this in play.

FUN FACT TIME

Extort is a dual ability that appears equally in both black and white, like first strike is dual colored ability that appears equally in both white and red. (see boros recruit, Tundra Wolves, Striking Sliver) In fact there's no reason at all it should say "pay w/b", since only white and black cards have the cost... It should have just been printed as "pay an extra 1,..." Except for one reason:

Mark Rosewater specifically requested the design team to make Extort have the hybrid w/b cost in it so that extort cards could only be used in white AND black EDH decks, not one or the other.

Or, more accurately, he designed it so that the people in charge of the EDH format would remove the ridiculous (in his mind) rule that hybrid cards can't be played in mono colored EDH decks. In Magic Design, Hybrids are cards that can fit into either of the colors it is (for example, Merfolk of the Depths is a card that could be printed at 4GG OR 4UU, without changing or editing anything besides perhaps it's creature types in any way. Gold Cards on the other hand, are cards that give abilities that exist solely because the card is that color (Skyward Eye Prophets gets vigilance because it's white, card draw because it's blue, and land accel, however bad, because it's green. With any one of those colors lacking, they would not have printed skyward eye the way it was).

It's interesting to note that the people who run Elder Dragon Highlander changed the entire rule on color identity just to spite the entire design philosophy behind hybrid costs, and the whole point of extort, while still allowing this card to be run in mono White EDH decks.

Can steal life, screw up most combo decks (if you get a T2) due to messing with artifact mana or screwing up Sneak Attack, and helps get your creatures through as you control the board. Also helps with Bloodbraid Elf and other fast cards.

@RAV0004

Extort is legal in a mono white or black deck because the hybrid colors are in the "reminder text". The ability is reminding the player you can either pay white or black mana for it. Im very confused though, how you said first strike is a white and red ability? There are first strikers from every color, and the ability doesnt have a cost anyway?

So, Extort is LEGAL in mono white or black decks
