Not in constucted, but in Limited will rock socks for the lucky few who pull him. Also in tribal caual as a very solid replacement for Lord of the Pit (not strictly better, Lord didnt tap, but this is better).

Xathrid > LotP
Simple test to check this: Get them both into play at the same time. It's obvious that the Xathrid is going to eat the LotP. (I pulled mine from a fat pack)
If you can get enough creatures out this card will mean DOOM to your opponents!

Sick nasty when you're in multiplayer and you have other big guys on your side. Hey, why attack one player with a 35/35 Lord of Extinction when you can have Xathrid Demon munch on him and wipe out every player in one swoop? This is a MUCH better card than Lord of the Pit because 1: he costs 1 less than LotP (a 7/7 flample for 6? Hello?), and 2: he actually DOES something to your opponent(s) whenever you feed a guy to him! This is one heck of a card to have on your side if you have enough creatures to feed him with. He would go great in a black/green deck.

I bot this card for $2 (practicly a steal)! the shop owner was about to start a tournament so he was in a hurry. he looked up the price and said $2. i was amazed! make sure that you have tons of creatures on the fid whn you play this. you will be unstoppable. works well with Master of the Wild Hunt. he can make tokens every turn to feed to this demon . theyre both in my black green 2010 deck. thats how i roll

While perhaps a bit too slow to count on, there are some pretty hard hitting combos with this guy: Pump up a creature before you sac it (Looming Shade, Vampire Rogue, etc) then BOOM with the 10+ damage. Play two ( or just clone it ) and sac them to each other for 14 ! In multiplayer, it deals to every opponent... and it's generally pretty hard to deal with that 'loses life' effect. Another 'trick' is to have an easy way to remove him, when he gets too dangerous for you - Unsummon, Sacrifice him, etc Maybe not a tournament winner (aren't a lot of the Mythic Rares weak like that?) but it's a fun card when you can pull it off.

Sick Artwork and more usefull than Lord of the Pit since you can cause some damage to your opponent just by paying his cost..WoC should create some lesser 2-3 CMC demons so we could play with a real Demon Tribal deck and get really rid of all those Freaky Imps from The Divine vs Demonic Decks..Do you listen Wizzards??? i found this card actually very useful, i have a strategy for if i don't have creatures, i use liliana vess's last effect to get mine and my opponents graveyards into play, then he will have plenty of sacrifices, even more so if your opponent has a strong creature u had them discard with her other effect

Yeahhh.. I'm not seeing it, all your opponent has to do is earthquake or something to kill off the other creatures and it does 7 to its controller and taps? I mean yes obviously it can be a good card, but it can just as easily be used to kill you in response. The only time the life loss is major is when you sacrifice a good creature as well. After all that, it has no removal protection either and still costs 6 mana with 3 black. It's not a bad card, but it's not a mythic rare in my book, its ability can be used against you as easily as it can work for you. Also, after they printed baneslayer.. well, its a demon, and the life loss is all fixed by a single baneslayer attacking every turn, and she comes into play at 5 mana.

Great combo with Xathrid Demon, Archdemon of Unx and Breeding Pit. The Breeding Pit thrulls satisfy the Archdemon of Unx and the zombies generated by the Archdemon satify Xathrid Demon while pinging for 2 and attacking for 13 with 2 flying tramplers. Stick Extractor Demon in the mix and laugh like a maniac as your opponent dumps cards from their library into their graveyard.

my combo with this is for my casual deck, since it has 1 card that isnt legal, but it can work fairly well without the card
xathrid demon, debtor's knell, maurading zombie (each player sac's a creature), rally flag and cemetery reaper
debtor pulls your maurading, wich you each sacrifice one for, then you sac maurading wich gets +1/+1 from reaper and another +1/+1 for each other zombie in play, for xathrid. ive done easy 13 damage to my opponent in one turn with this thing

if you dont feed him he attacks you, he taps and deals 7 (his power), really flavorfull.
The card seems really iconic, the art is awesome, taking about the utility, well its not Extremely good but if i pulled this i would use it in my deck, its a massive damage dealer, if you sac a creature with lets say 4 power he can deal 11 damage in one turn and both trample and flying makes it so that it's always a threat to your opponent, they can only answer with some removal or lose the game.

I think the problem with this card is Eldrazi Monument exists. They both require a sacrifice, but Eldrazi monument's effect is just better (all creatures get +1/+1 and flying and indestructible versus just a big beatstick) and with removal running rampant right now buffing all your creatures is safer than having one big creature that can get removed, since artifact removal is rarer than creature removal. Plus monument is 1 less mana and is colorless rather than black.

Cast Mortivore, Rage Reflection, Furnace of Rath, and Dragonmaster Outcast with this guy. Throw in some Whispersilk Cloaks just to be safe. Or if they have Ajoni out and use the ability that makes a creature with x/x where x is their life total, use Bloodchief of Ghet on it, get the token, and sac it to Xathrid Demon. Total ability backfire on Ajoni.

@Hibron: No. I meant that while Xathrid's ability is on the stack, you tap it and some other creatures to make the troll 25/25 and then sack it to Xathrid's ability, killing all your opponents in one blow.

I use him in a reanimator deck. Its fairly easy to get Sheoldred, Rune-Scarred Demon, and Xathrid Demon out at the same time. 1: dark ritual, buried alive 2: exhume sheoldred 3: put rune-scarred demon into play, grab and cast exhume to put the xathrid into play, swing for 6. 4: sac the scarred demon for 6 life, swing for 13 5: if the games not over yet, put the scarred demon back into play with sheoldred, grab whatever, sac him for 6. Repeat each turn as necessary. Not the most powerful reanimator play, but extremely fun.

This is better Lord of the Pit. Yeah the "life loss" is worse if you want to use circle of protection: black or some deal, and the Lord does not tap, but if your going to feed either demon, this is the demon clearly you want to feed. And he comes out quicker with the exact same flying/trample body.

Very sad that this is 'strictly' better than Lord of the Pit. Old cards that were such classics should try to avoid being so out-classed like that. But, I would be more okay with a Xathrid reprint than another Baneslayer. So of course, being Wizards, they did just the opposite. xP

If you're interested in Xathrid Demon's sacrifice ability, Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord has a cheaper casting cost with no penalty, should you decide not to sacrifice a creature. He also gains +1/+1 counters depending on how many creatures you have in your graveyard.
