If you think of it as 4 mana going to pay for Diabolic Tutor (which I know, there are cheaper searchers out there - just staying current), this is a 6/6 Flying for 3! Except it's limited to late game searching.

the only problem with your "if you cast him, you should win. Period." hypothesis is that he costs as much as both cards in the most relevant combo combined, and still falls to titans. Could be an EDH card, if your deck is scraped for the Real Demonic Tutor.

Don't demons come with drawbacks (other than cmc)?

★★★★☆ (4.4/5.0) (8 votes)
Should be noted that this is a tutor that you could potentially use repeatedly. And since he tutors already, the combos fall together really easily. This would be broken on a weenie.

If you play it; you should win. Period.

EDIT: I said play, not cast. Why would I ever want to cast this? Black can do better.

I thought demos were supposed to have drawbacks...

There was a question about that in the Great Designer search, but recently MaRo said that magic was moving away from drawbacks, so i guess this is what he meant.

Eventually, demons will just be big with no cost (other than mana of course) like dragons.

I don't like it.

"Could be an EDH card, if your deck is scraped for the Real Demonic Tutor." -- alucard311

You're....kidding, right? In EDH, since mana cost is pretty much irrelevant, this comes down to pure card advantage: Casting Demonic Tutor nets you 0 card advantage, the tutor merely replaces itself. Casting this dude, however, nets you that card and a nice beefy 6/6 flier at the same time. And that's the best kind of +1 card advantage, a fatty AND the best card in your deck. PLUS, you can flicker/reanimate/copy to reuse this guy MUCH more easily than Demonic Tutor, since he has the advantage of being a creature. In EDH, this >>> Demonic Tutor. And that's saying something, this is Demonic Tutor we're talking about, after all.

While this guy is great, he doesn't quite live up to what Angels have become. While White gets crazy cards like Iona and Baneslayer, we here at black are stuck with Demon of Death's Gate and Ob. Don't get me wrong, those two demons are great, but they're just pathetic in comparison.

At least dragons are starting to get theirs.

I really wanna play him, combined with venser he is an uber beasty. but seven mana? I am skeptical.. you do get a 6/6 flying body, and he trades with titans.. might be worth it.

@SIlverSkyz

... i don't like it either. i only got into magic at the end of rise but ive seen quite a bit of the older demons. they were cool! how does giving you free stuff without any consequence fit the idea of bargaining with a demon for help!?
they should up the drawbacks and up the power of demons. and down the power of angels

Do you know how HELPFUL this guy was in the prerelease!?!?! I was playing black/red aggro and i put him down , used his ability to fetch me a fling. I only won rounds because of his fetching or by buffing my creatures up with slaughtercry and then flinging.

@alucard311, it has more card advantage than the tutor, in EDH being a slower format i'd rather have the demon, and in case you hadn't noticed, titans fall to titans as well, so does every other mothafuckin creature with toughness 6 or less you stupid ***!

★★★☆☆ (3.4/5.0) (4 votes)
I love this card. The reason why is because it isn't too overpowered, but it has no negative effect.

A 7 CMC 6/6 flying creature is a pretty mediocre creature in this time of MTG, however, the addition of a now banned card's effect makes it a great support card.

It would make a decent card for a resurrection deck. Here's the strategy:

NOTE: This isn't standard, unfortunately.

Turn 1-2: Place lands (although you may use Dark Ritual, let's say you don't)

Turn 3: Play Buried Alive, burying this card and two others (preferably two Massacre Wurm)

Turn 4: Play a single-card resurrection spell (Necromancy/Reanimate are my best suggests), and return Rune-Scarred to the field. Find yourself a multi-creature resurrection card like Living Death or Balthor the Defiled.

Turn 5: If Living Death was chosen, then play it now. If something else was, play it when it is most opportune for yourself.

With this strategy, if you used Living Death or Balthor, you could have a minimum of two large powerful creatures out, depending on the amount of Buried Alive's you could use.

PS. If any of you are curious, yes, my casual-play deck is a resurrection deck, and yes, my friends hate me everytime i play it.

@alucard311 - Have you even played EDH? This guy is so much better than Demonic Tutor if you're playing EDH. If properly played, you can use Tutor everyturn (maybe even multiple times) and still swing away with a Flying 6/6! How is that at all worse than Demonic Tutor in EDH? If anything, this guy is even more powerful than Demonic Tutor in EDH because he's so much easier to reuse.

That said, its tough to see what's going to happen with Standard, everything is going to be dialed back in terms of speed, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. It looks like they're bringing back some old-school effects, with guys like this and Sphinx of Uthuun, only they're attaching them to some beefy bodies and upping the cost to play them, which I really like. Unfortunately, they're not very playable at the moment, we'll just have to wait and see what happens in the Standard environment. I personally think that a lot more people will go to Extended, just so they don't have to part with Zendikar.

Yo dawg, I heard you like bombs in limited and drafts, so we put a bomb in your bomb, so you can own your opponents while owning your opponent's in drafts/limited.

But seriousness, I really do like the card. Being a critter is nice too, for reanimation shenanigans.

Although, I'll have 3rd(?) the idea that this isn't really what a demon should be. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's kinda lame flavor-fully. It makes sense that it's blac, but demons are suppose to have some sort of draw back.(You're dealing with a demon, of course they should want something from you for their service.) But, I guess it's to appease those who're are too afraid of taking risks, which seems to be the majority...>_> Seriously Wizards, you all can't just make everything all ups and no downsides...

I give it a 4.5. It's solid, but the flavor is just too forgiving for a demon.(I guess it is possible to have "good" demons when you think about it...)

EDIT:
Something like Gutwrencher Oni is okay, cause its still a draw back, and the ogres kinda appease this demon, better than one human controlling him.

This demon is really confusing me. His power, toughness, flying and ability indicates that he could be standard competitive. The only thing that's holding him back at all is 7 mana, compared to the 6 of the titans. But, quite frankly, with the possible exception of Sun Titan and having a certain permanent in your graveyard, none of the titans search for exactly the card you need when they ETB. They may get a strong effect each time they attack, but its that specific tutoring which makes me think someone could make a top tier deck with Rune-Scarred as the finisher.

Heck, if you hit your land drop on the turn after you cast him you could play 4 Phantasmal Images copying him (I do prefer the Sun Titan/Image synergy, but Rune-Scarred has potential with it). A kicked Rite of Replication would leave you with 36 points of flying power on the board, and a full hand of exactly the cards you need. If you expect him to die almost immediately (and don't have a Mimic Vat out), you can dig up a Rise from the Grave. Heck, in my current trial deck with him I've included Mimic Vats, and a singleton Sundial of the Infinite (for perma-Mimic Vat tokens), and on more than one occasion I've intentionally killed my own demon just to get him under the vat.

And don't even get started on other formats, or casual. With the multitude of clone/copy effects, reanimation effects, and the awesome cards you can tutor up... there are going to be some insane casual decks. Pro tip - he goes extremely well with Emeria, the Sky Ruin and board sweepers.

In any case, here's hoping someone breaks him into standard!

I don't really think this card means they're making a long-term shift in the normal "drawbackiness" of demons. I think the thought process was more a simple:

"Hey, we're printing Demonic Tutor on a really large stick! What creature type should it be?"
"Uh.... demon?"
"GIVE THAT MAN A RAISE!"

Turn N: Rune-Scarred Demon.
Turn N+1: Phantasmal Image copying Rune-Scarred Demon, Phantasmal Image copying Rune-Scarred Demon, Phantasmal Image copying Rune-Scarred Demon, tutor for a card of your choice.

Note that you started with only one Rune-Scarred Demon and seven lands.

This would be an amazing addition to the already stupid massive hordes in a Kaalia of the vast EDH. Equipped Kaalia with a Whispersilk Cloak and Play him with her ability. Then go hunt down something like Iona. So much nastiness to be had with him.

Say you have three Heartless Summonings on the battlefield turn 5.

T5: Rune-Scarred Demon into Demon into Phyrexian Metamorph copying Demon.
T6: Demon into Demon into Metamorph into Metamorph.
T7: Metamorph into Phantasmal Image into Image into Image into Image into Disperse.
T8: Disperse two more times and you have 72 power in the air.

use Shifty Doppelganger to get him out for 4 cmc, then search for Rite of Replication and kick it. Works great in edh! You get four flying fatties, and four more cards to search for! And only at 13 cmc!? That's less than the cost of two!

My favorite demon by far.

Wait. Stop.
Are you....*** ME?!?!?!

So, we start off with the 'boring part'- a 6/6 Flyer for 7. On a rare, that's a little under the curve, but hey, blame the Mythics for taking the sweet spots. Let's see what else he......HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!!! The ultimate classic Demon Spell, just kinda TACKED ON?!? What are they charging for that on this guy? I'd pay about 4 for a 6/6 Flying Rare. So...Demonic Tutor now costs 3 mana. Which is one less than Diabolic Tutor. That's nice :)

No, this will not go into Vintage combo decks. This will serve a far nobler purpose: fetching other Demons in your Kaalia of the Vast 'let's break this *** in half' deck.

Fetch himself into Fetch himself again into Fetch himself again into Rakdos the Defiler or something else equally awful if you're playing not-singleton.

You play this guy. You just...do. Liliana Vess worships the ground this guy just curbstomped your face into.

I now want another reprint of Demonic Tutor with this guy's face on it.

EDIT: And then INNISTRAD happened...I think Wizards has decided that Progenitus, Eldrazi, and the Phyrexians are not enough, so they decided to push Demons. Wow. I'm terrified of what they think will decide is OK to put on Griselbrand in Avacyn Restored. :O
EDIT EDIT: And because it's Wizards, I'm afraid of getting too excited over Griselbrand, lest he not meet my 'It is my Hour. This world is Doomed.' expectations. :/

WHAAAAAT THE!!!!!!!!!!! HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLL??!?!??!?!??! KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALIA!

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! X.X

Avacyn Restored Cards That Made Kaalia of the Vast Orgasm:

1. Avacyn, Angel of Hope. See my Worldslayer Comment
2. Griselbrand. OK, with Lifelink and Kaalia's special ability, NECROPOTENCE costs no life, and no mana. That seems fair. Especially after a Congregate. X.X Griselbrand did not fail my 'This is My Hour. F** You All.' expectations.....o.O
3. Restoration Angel. Blink Rune-Scarred Demon for more Demonic Tutoring. Cloudshift to do it again.
4. Demonlord of Ashmouth. A 4-cost 5/4 that wants a sacrifice. And it has Undying.
5. Thunderous Wrath. !!! 5 Damage for 1 mana !!! Needs library manipulation. Liliana Vess just happens to be a Miracle worker.

And it's only Monday of the first Spoiler Week. Holy Hell on Crack Burning in a Pit of Shining Blasphemous Destruction of.......daaaaaaaaaaaang.

WHAT ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH WERE YOU THINKING WIZARDS?!?!?

Wizards of the Coast: We aren't concerned about breaking Kaalia of the Vast in Commander. We made sure to give her plenty of healthy competition. Blue decks now have access to Temporal Mastery to go with their Jace, the Mind Sculptor

You...reprinted...TIME WALK to balance Kaalia?!?

TIME WALK IS BACK, AND THAT'S SUPPOSED TO MAKE KAALIA FAIR?!?!?1

Wizards must never make the 4-colored Legends. It cannot be allowed at this point. Kaalia of the Vast + Time Walk....JUST. NO.

Works extremely well with Conjurer's Closet. Heck, you can even search your deck for this specific card the first time you play it. And if you put him out with Kaalia of the Vast, then you most likely have 5 mana to cast the closet on the same turn.

I love DarthParralax's lenghty rants on how Kaalia is completely OP while her entire deck can be stopped on its tracks if she's hit by a timely Spell Crumple / Void Stalker / Spin into Myth / Arrest / Lignify...
AncientTimer, demons are great sources of information - for a price. Sure, it would have been much more flavorful if it required some life or a small sacrifice for his ability, but it's not very off this way.
Oh, and now to comment on this 6/6 tutoring beauty. he's very solid on his own and insane if your deck has ways to recur him effectively, such as Cauldron of Souls, Dawn of the Dead and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed.

Rune-Tutor Demon {4}{B}

Flying
When Rune-Tutor Demon enters the battlefield, search your library and cast from your library that Demonic Tutor all black EDH players should have in their decks, then shuffle it into your library. Also, make yourself a somewhat big target and hope you don't get killed.
