The Oracle data says that Reaper King's converted mana cost is 5, when it's actually 10. It even says so on the card itself.

for a scare crow deck with all mana types this card would rule...other wise the mana is just a bit much...I could pull it off with 8 mana in my deck but I don't have the space...still bravo

5/5 for sure! and 5 mana comes quick in an all artifact scarecrow deck.. and even if mana is an issue, theres always Deathrender and a quick sac of a sword wielding puppet with your scarecrone, and the reaper king joins the fray! 5th turn easy, everytime!

Yeah, I like it. It's abilty to distroy any permiant when every another Scarecrow comes into play under your control is strong, condiering your not limited to anything, so you can distroy anything without having to resort to your own perminant, but the game is most likyl over by that time. lol.

other nice scarecrows: Scarecrone; bring back artifact creatures from graveyard and lets you sacrifice scarecrows for a free draw Heap Doll; cheap at least, sacrifice it by itself to get something out of game from a graveyard, or use the scarecrone and get a free draw. Painter's Servant ; good and cheap defender, and it adds the color of your choosing to anything that comes out into play after him. get some southern/northern/eastern/western paladins along with him and you'll become target #1 :)

Should work well with Open the Vaults, which you could combine with something like Firespout, to kill your low toughness scarecrows and then bring them back, and hopefully wiping the opponent's side of the board in the process.

My best friend in my favorite deck I've build, my pride and joy Scarecrow deck XD The minute I got a few copies of him, even before I had my set, I KNEW I wanted a scarecrow deck; he's a wrecking ball with the other scarecrows!! No need for cards like Doom Blade or Disenchant with this guy!

Maybe if you're playing Followed Footsteps on your opponent's Reaper King. Not a good idea for your own Reaper King-- Reaper King's legendary, so if two or more are in play, they all go to the graveyard due to the "legend rule." So much for that multiple-Reaper-King fantasy... unless you've got Mirror Gallery out.

I think I agree with bowl of gumbo on this one. As big and bad as he is, he's still an legendary artifact. Shatter, Clone, Copy Artifact, Disenchant... There are so many ways for your opponent to take this card out for half the mana you spent on it.

The key to Reaper King is that yes, most of his tribe is ineffective, but you can still make him rock as long as you have a bit of backup. You don't have to have an all-scarecrow deck to make him functional. How many Vindicates do you really need before your opponent bites it? I run him as one of my bombs in my half-scarecrow/half-otherrandomartifacts deck. I cheat him into play with Master Transmuter. I make his minions cheaper with Etherium Sculptor. I crank out endless scarecrows with Soul Foundry and for giggles make them all unkillable with Darksteel Forge. He'll also occasionally share the battlefield with Darksteel Colossus and Platinum Angel, because I don't believe in overkill. You can take the regular, run-of-the-mill broken artifact deck and make it scarecrow-y and fun. Reaper King makes that possible.
in a scarecrow deck or even with changelings this guy is utterly insane, very fun to play

I agree - his tribe stinks. Even the best scarecrows are merely playable, while the worst provide overcosted powers to creatures of a color with better options (red gets haste for 2, green gets +1/1 for 3, WTF?). Waiting around for this one dude to come and turn the Jawbone Skulkin you're holding into a CMC1 Desert Twister with a 2/2 creature attached isn't really the most effective way to build a deck. And even though a splinter twined grim poppet is now giving you a puncture blast, a vindicate and a 5/5 attacker all at the same time, that time happens to be somewhere around turn nine, about five turns after the pestermite already grabbed the splinter twin and went infinite. Grrrr. Poor guy.

Hanna's Custody offers good protection, it's a fairly cheap way of protecting him 'cause Darksteel is not only mana expensive but can screw you if someone's running Viashino Heretic.
As many ppl have mentioned, great in EDH when he's out... IF he stays out, 'cause he's like a BIG glass cannon and paints a huge target on his head. I find you need stuff like the Glass spinner creature or Hanna's Custody or countermagic established before you play him, because you pretty much have to assume he won't make it around the table.
IF I can pull it off in my deck, I like to try to establish either Ghostaway + Witness or Kiki-Jiki + Mystic Snake (or both) on the board before I drop him. Crystal Shard is good too if you run a lot of CIP effects like I do. Great General, but to really make him work requires more protection and less combo.
Now that Ghostly Flicker has been printed, this guy just got A LOT more powerful.

This card isn't the best in the world, but it's a beautifully designed card through and through.
If you can get the reaper off, it's devastating (vindicate every time you toss out a scarecrow, or vindicates after flicker your board of scarecrows?)
The flavor of this thing is off the chart.
It's a Tribal Scarecrow lord, tying together all the wacky scarecrows throughout the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor blocks
It's a fun card. Despite its cost and other prohibiting factors, it's a card that's fun wherever you play it, and you have to build smartly to bring out its potential.
It is a masterfully made card. R&D did well with this one.

I love everything about this card. Flavor text, art, rules text, creature type, casting cost. Like a few others who posted on this thread, he is the commander of my changeling/scarcrow Commander deck.
With a suite of artifact mana fixers and another suite of multicolor removal, dreadbore, terminate, vindicate, putrefy and wrecking ball, the deck is seriously removal heavy. I need to update the deck with some flicker effects to make it an even bigger threat.
This is the greatest flavour text you will ever see on a card.
EVER.

"A Mr. Death is here. Something about a reaping?"
He's one of the most fun commanders! Besides the obvious mana fixers, I get a lot of mileage from Kaleidostone to draw a card and later bust it for 5 in the right colors to cast him. Make sure you've got some low cost protection to keep him alive after you drop him. I like Mizzium Skin, Turn Aside, and Simic Charm.
Scarecrow EDH is neat. You have all mana-colors, you're in artifacts so you can side-play modular or affinity. You have all the colors so you have all of the flicker effects to maximize his usage.
You have all the colors so you have all of the best removal and spells in the game. You're in EDH so you can actually play this guy and enjoy him.

@master_biomancer You can't use him in 4 colored EDH for the same reason you can't use Rakdos Signet in a BUG EDH deck. If the mana symbol appears on the card, anywhere, and it isn't in your commander's colors, it can't be in your deck.

His scarecrow tribe are a weird lot and you may find that cards like Adaptive Automaton, Phyrexian Metamorph work better than Watchwing Scarecrow and Rattleblaze Scarecrow.

Also: If you have this guy out, you can champion a Changeling Hero with a Changeling Berserker then champion that with a Changeling Titan (or some other ordering of those) to blow up as many permanents as you want. Fiend Hunter can substitute for one of those, as can a Clone or similar, or Restoration Angel.
