I like that card, too, it's a a lot of fun in persist decks. But what the hell does that creature depict? That doesn't look that much like an Elemental, rather something like a Boar-Bat-Spider-Snake.

Love the effect, hate the art. What's it supposed to be, old Chinese style painting or something?

whats wrong with the art. It's an interesting change from normal magic art. this guys effect seems amazing, why is he going for so low, I see it going for 20 cents.

Qazior, MinorPandemic did that for comic effect. I remember thinking it was a riot back when I was 8 years old and they did something like that on Nickelodeon..
The art is...kinda blehh. I've never really been a fan of Rebecca Guay, honestly. (No hate please..I know how some people love her art)

First off, Manbearpig is half bear, half man-pig. Let's get this straight people.
As for heartmender.... oh, Murderous Redcap and Kitchen Finks oughtta sum it up, just about. Persist is a powerful mechanic, and this is one of its generals. Just find yourself a sac engine or a wrath, or whatever.
That he has persist himself... that's what cinches this card in as a beast. And I like the artwork, not everything has to be from western canonical descent.

Like all the elementals its some crazy mixed up animal, I don't feel to strongly about the art compared to the other elementals, its pretty similiar.. nevermaker or mulldrifter or even flickerwisp all have mixed up forms like that. The art is by rebecca guay so its not asian art, though it may be inspired by it. Fun for persist decks or with cauldron of souls, can be particularly frustrating for red players, or if you are playing red yourself, allows you to volcanic fallout and then just get your persist creatures back.

This card has excellent synergy! In any deck based around persist, this is a key player; and it's quite effective with an abundance of WoG-like cards and effects.

You know, I was JUST commenting on Harbinger of Night that if you could keep it from self destructing it was such a beast. Pair him up with this guy and... Ouch. Of course then he effectively loses his immortality-granting Persist. But in exchange you're getting -1/-1 Counters on all your opponents while avoiding them yourself. Getting the two out at the same time is admittedly a little unlikely of course... But I thought he was half bearpig, half man?

@Ritius, that's the Imaginationland one. Al Gore's original concept was half-pig, half-bearman.
This thing hard to kill, I'll give it that.

Umm... That's not a man bear pig. That is very much a half spider bear-snake.
I like it, it has modular and linear elements.

He's really good at what he does.
However, with Melira, Sylvok Outcast available, he's become unnecessary since with a sac outlet, you can just outright win the game with Melira. Before she came out though, I think this card's stock was a tad higher. Now he's become irrelevant unless you feel you need to play a fair game.

Melira does NOT make this guy obsolete. Melira is better for many things, like complete infect protection, and persisting creatures more than once per turn.
But she is worse at other things. Such as wrath of god-ing the entire battlefield. If so, melira dies, and your persist critters are no longer immortal. Whereas with heartmender, he survives as well and continues to provide immortality to other persist critters after a wrath.

@RiftenBack: I don't know about you, but my Karador EDH deck uses this over Melira, and it still manages to combo out like a beast with persist. The key is that I use Mikaeus, the Unhallowed as my Melira surrogate. That this, too, has persist allows it to be in and of itself a combo piece. Further, it works just as well with non-persisting creatures that are given persist with either Cauldron of Souls or Cauldron Haze, as they can't persist again the turn they first persist. Whether they get the -1/-1 counter or not is more or less irrelevant in this case. Also, sometimes I'd actually like my creatures to get -1/-1 counters, as it can bring them into Skullclamp range. Drawing three cards by equipping a Solemn Simulacrum with Skullclamp because it's now a 1/1 after persisting is pretty freaking good.

@Phyrexian Trygon & Co.: Actually, if we ever have cause to pay another visit to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, I wouldn't be surprised to see creatures reminiscient of humans, bears, and swine all at once.
They'd be called "bugbears". (And yes, it's a fit; they originally came from Welsh folklore.)
