Seems a sweet in limited. Comes down early and gets a little more value out of each of your guys.

This is absolutely useful in Limited, and may even see some use in token decks. But man, that art...holy crap. Johannes Voss has outdone himself.

The flavor for this card is just amazing. The art, the ability, the flavor text. Everything just fits so perfectly.

Interesting compared to Falkenrath Noble which is better as a creature (evasive, can attack and block and survive it), but this comes down a lot sooner and has GORGEOUS art.

Disciple of the Vault may have met its rival. There are more ways to sacrifice creatures than any other permanents, and there are more way to generate creatures (token) than any other permanents, not to mention land/artifact creatures also count as creatures.

That's a highly annoying card in multiplayer. It also dies there easily. If you have a combo allowing you to sac a creature over and over, this guy is a win condition. I don't think though that he is worth beeing slapped into random decks.

Aside from the epic art, this card is balls out crazy in draft. Coming down turn 2 means that it's going to see some stuff die. What makes it really good is that it just sits there, and it feels like garbage to waste a removal spell on a 0/1, so most people won't. Even if they do, they still lose and you gain. But if this sticks around, I gained over 10 life from this guy at the pre-release.

Great art of a Blood Artist. Artception!
Hopefully not regarding the use of blood, though...
Depends on whether Johannes Voss can relate to this card's flavor text or not :p

Incredibly annoying to play against. It comes down early and makes you pay through a lot of the game. The life gain means it's safe for the opponent to not block with it and using removal or bounce on a 0/1 kinda feels like a waste. Overlook it at your own peril.

I love this card, but I think he works better in a zombie deck than in a vampire deck, personally. Aggressively throw zombie tokens at your opponent and have them HAVE to take the damage or block and still suffer from it. Sac creatures to other creatures when your opponent starts having options like Fog and such. Or better yet- imprint this ability onto another creature that's more formidable. Useful, but is just a part of a bigger plan.

You may not believe it just looking at him, but this guy is some of the legit-est $hit we've seen in a long time. Absolutely nuts in a standard, zombie-sacrifice sort of deck that abuses killing wave. Also, he has incredible art. Easy 5/5 for me.

Style oozes from this card. It's a self-portrait of Johannes Voss painting Curse of Oblivion. All that's left of Jana Schirmer, his "co-artist", is in those little cups! Call 911!

If you somehow gave the Blood Artist infect, it would not give the opponent any poison counters, right?

I'm thinking this is the case because it says, "target player loses 1 life" and not "Blood Artist does 1 damage to target player."

This guy's cool. Get a couple of these guys and a bunch of junk onto the field, then play Killing Wave for zero. Sacrifice your stuff and sap the life from your opponents. It's not tournament-worthy, but it's definitely a lot of fun.

Can anyone explain the flavour?

A creature dies, he uses its remains to paint a picture, then... your opponent is weaker at the horror of what happened while you are appreciative of the amazing art produced?

BTW, I think this is a great card, it was a critical part of a tournamant winning deck and the art is sublime.

An excellent addition to my Orzhov deck- i used to run Falkenrath Noble, yet when i'm gaining as much life as i am with this, at such an incredible pace in EDH, a "tough body" is the least of my concerns or desires.

This guy can be insanely broken in multiplayer. Last night at a planechase tournament, someone wiped the board with a wrath of god, and 14 creatures were destroyed. Because a guy had blood artist out, he dealt the full 14 to me (i had 14 life at the time) instantly eliminating me from the tournament.

I felt like meeting him later that night in the parking lot with a few of my friends and some bats, but decided otherwise since I'll see him again at the FNM and take my revenge there, with cards. That's what a real player would do, keep it in the ring.

I'm currently running this in a standard deck with Falkenrath Noble, Bloodflow Connoiseur, Geralf's Messenger, and Gravecrawler. I love how this card gets out early enough to really make your opponent think twice about attacking you. It reverses the thinking because usually people block the big creatures and let the little ones through. Anyway, I just wanted to say... get a couple of these out, wait for the board to get a little crowded, then Killing Wave.

@CarlosLiberated Truly lovely combo. Toss in a few Falkenrath Aristocrats as well just to squeeze every bit of value out of your hasty humans.

I'm currently using this as a base for my Birthing Pod deck with the aforementioned combo with the help of Geralf's Messengers and Gravecrawlers. It does some serious damage.

I think this may be the missing piece to give me some consistency in my GreenWhiteBlack Perilous Forays deck. Between token generation and Amulet of Vigor that's a lot of dying. Ob Nixilis, the fallen is nice and it's hard to go wrong with Knight of the Reliquary.
Also, I've seen mean choices being forced on people with this card and Killing Wave.

Works really well in a morbid deck alongside undying creatures, sac outlets like Altar's Reap and kill spells like Prey Upon and Tragic Slip.
Even Better, use alongside Predator ooze. Of course, the mana gets a bit screwy then; {G}{G}{G} is hard to play alongside {1}{B}, but I guess that's what Woodland Cemetery is for.

In morbid decks or any deck that sacrifices a lot, this guy is fantastic. Also works well against Eldrazi decks interestingly enough. I used it against my brother and a couple of games the creatures I sacrificed were just enough to push him over the edge.

More like an enchantment then a creature. But, hypothetically, has the same functionality as one what with aura's and equipment. Don't underestimate this card. Think of how many cards die over the course of a full game. Definitely a psychological card; it makes them think, is it worth chump blocking or trading with this card etc. A little slow as a card for aggressive players, but still outstanding in it's own right. Combo's with removal, morbid, and sac engines/attrition. Good in it's own right as well.

Itsmeyouidiot, you took the words right out of my mouth. "BLOOD ART TECHNIQUE!! A PAINTING OF THE SOUL!!" I liked that game. A neat card too, you could effectively fit it into vampire tribal and pump him up with Rakish Heir, or he can go into simple mono black, where he can make friends with Massacre Wurm or Mutilate.

I run four copies of this guy. I've won games with just one. Token decks think twice against this guy. Removal spells? You're taking out a 0/1 and losing life because of it. Then throw in Killing Wave and watch your opponents scoop. And the best part? He's not even rare. 5/5

Blood Artist and Falkenrath Noble created another game mechanic that, I'd say, really improved the way many decks play.

I play a mono-black Birthing Pod deck that primarily uses Geralf's Messenger, Gravecrawler and Butcher Ghoul as Pod-targets to find things like Diregraf Captain and Phyrexian Obliterator. I mostly play it against my friends human deck, and I easily find that I lose more life Podding than getting damaged.

That is, until I put Blood Artist in. My main reason why I didn't play him before is because Blood Artist slows my speed down by one turn, but after playing with it, it's a turn worth wasting.

After that, every time I'd Pod, I'd only lose 1 life, and my opponent would feel some pain as well. If I had 2 Artist's, I'd lose nothing, and my Geralf's Messenger hits my opponent for 4 instead of 2.

I love everything about Blood Artist, and I will continue to use him for as long as I play. 5/5

EDIT: Also, in EDH, he is amazing. It makes some people think twice about playing a boardwipe, since you'll gain 5-30 life in one sweep.

This is a great and balanced card in head to head. For the effect to trigger, I have to use my resources (mana, creatures, etc) to kill your creature. If my creature dies, I'm down a creature.

In Multi-Player it is completely broken. Another opponent's creatures are killed or an opponent gets bonfired, I'm just sitting there gaining life and dishing out damage. Much too strong for only 2 mana.
GhostCounselor
★★★★☆ (4.2/5.0) (2 votes)
Now that standard has sack engines like Cartel Aristocrat and Undercity Informer, the Blood Artist goes from mere impressionist painter to near renaissance artist levels of greatness.. Incredibly powerful when combo-ed with either of the above cards. It's the lethal part of a mill engine that assures me opponents will think twice about whatever they want to do.
Hugomanen
★★★★☆ (4.8/5.0) (2 votes)
This is significantly better than Suture Priest. With Suture Priest your opponent will never lose life from your creatures, with Blood Artist every creature can drain your opponent a bit. Stuff needs to die, but it's easy to build a deck in which stuff dying is a wincon on it's own.
Suture doesn't finish off your opponent, Blood Artist does so in a big way. I can't count the number of games I've won by boardwiping myself to a sac engine.

I hate this guy. This is how it usually goes for me. First someone puts him down. I ignore him. Then he puts down some other stuff, and then finally another Blood Artist . Now I'm looking at 2 damage per death, and if he has a sac outlet... I'm screwed.

Do yourself a favor and kill him right away before he becomes obnoxious.

4.5/5. Consume Spirit for 1 (which costs 3 mana) every time a creature dies and or himself? Who cares if he is 0/1, I wouldn't swing with a weenie with that good of an ability anyways in fear of losing him in battle.

I love this creature. If you're playing Black and Green together, combo him with Mitotic Slime, Bloodflow Connoisseur, Golgari Germination, and Creakwood Liege for some seriously awesome sac engine damage. If you want to make it a combo you can use each turn, throw in a Gleancrawler. Hell, might as well use Grave Pact to double the amount of creatures that are dying.

EDIT:
I am going to break this card all over again with the upcoming M14 set. This will be best friends with Shadowborn Apostle(S)... no autocard yet, but you can look it up in the spoilers.

You always want something like this in your deck as an alternate win condition. It works normally and works well, but it also works to ensure that you don't get them to 1 health and get stuck with Worship causing you to lose, or turbo-fog stalling you into oblivion.

This + Geralf's Messenger + any sac outlet => 6 life, 7 if you go all in. Not bad if you're stuck not attacking.

This in multiplayer gives you an instant win condition against wrath effects and allows you to over-extend a bit. Sit him next to Harvester of Souls and you get cards, life, AND a win condition.

This is one of the things that causes me to run a lot of Plague Spitters and weenie wipes in mutiplayer. Small utility guys get out of hand quickly.

My black white irritating as @#$% (doesn't win ALL the time but is certainly annoying even when it doesn't) uses this , Blood Seeker, Suture Priest and Soul Warden. Then I have Darien, King of Kjeldor and Worship and a few black tutors to make myself pretty well indestructible. After that I throw out something like Reiver Demon and watch the luls commence.
Basically the point was Blood Artist + Reiver Demon (Alternately Plague Wind)+ any non-black non-artifact token gen = hilarious if impractical in cast cost.

This in a sacrifice deck along with Grave Pact is brutal. It can really potentially lock down an aggro deck too if you manage to get multiples of either out. Attack? I chump block, you lose. Try to stall? I play Damnation, you lose. Heck, even deciding whether or not to your creatures becomes a lose/lose situation for your opponent as if they're not careful their board could be wiped and they they'll still lose a ton of life to boot.

One of the best 2 drops for Black. A cruel choice for any opponent, either waste a removal card on a 0/1 and take the 1 point of life loss, or risk taking a higher amount of life later with a board sweeper.
