He is which planeswalker? Hmmm.

Pretty painful if played with harrow or fetch lands. Just one swing from him after landfall can prove to be deadly.

This guy owned me so badly at the prerelease... for a Mythic Rare he doesn't seem that rare because I fought him 2 times in 5 matches. But still a great card. Powerful, epic and very deserving of being a Mythic.

I'm guessing he's an eldrazi, hence the eldrazi monument, or something of that sort. He also seems to have vines connected to him as though hes waking up from a slumber in the earth or what not. Only guesses of course. Very powerful, I could see myself immediately trying to burn this guy off the field before he got to big, but then I haven't played against one yet.

This guy would be awesome with Korlash, Heir to Blackblade. +6/+6, opponent loses 6 and you get 2 free lands, all for discarding a copy...

ArKive, it is funny that you mention warpworld + landfall

a friend of mine runs warpworld, and if landfall triggers in a warp, then you can get a devistating combo basicly placing your whole deck after a few warps with rampaging baloth, emeria angel, and seige gang comander

the deck uses keeper of progenitus to power out warps at turn 5 (turn 4 is required to play the keeper, with out any other mana acceleration)

our last game with warpworld, we went through 10 warps, and I am telling you, there are only 3 ways to effectively counter a warpworld, Blue gather specimens, a deck designed to warp, ie another warpworld deck, or an ally deck running a play set of turntimber ranger, and with the ally, you cross your fingers and hope you hit at least 1 turntimber early in the resolution giving you more permanents for the next warp

and Ob, I see him in a few landfall g/b decks with the g/b fetch

I'm guessing the combo I'm thinking of doesnt work, because nobody has mentioned Warp World in conjunction with Ob Nixilis. is this because they all enter the battlefield at the same time? I do not know, but thought it was worth mentioning
Played in some kind of permanent swarm/draw power deck, running Noble Hierarch, Birds of Paradise, Lotus Cobra, Harrow, fetch lands, anything to ramp your mana to get Ob Nix out on 3rd or 4th turn. 4th, 5th or 6th turn sees you drop a Warp World. picking up and shuffling everything, dropping 3 Ob Nix and 3 Land = win, or 2 Ob Nix and 4 Land = win. Even 1 Ob Nix can solo your opponent if you manage to drop 7 lands (3 basic and 2 fetch lands, for 2 more basic).

Due to Ob Nix being legendary, they will all self-destruct, but their landfall effects will not have resolved yet, so you are able to put Ob Nix onto the field, having them die and head for the graveyard, but put land cards down in this instant, and use all your fetch lands you put down, adding their abilities to the stack, to fetch more lands.

It can be a long shot, but even if u dont manage to kill your opponent right then and there, u have whatever you managed to warp world onto the field to finish them off.

@Dingo777: I have been modifying this deck so that it plays Warp World by turn 4-5.
At the moment, most of my games turn out like this.
1st: basic land, forest if i have one, if not, Terramorphic Expanse or another fetch land will get me a forest first turn
2nd: second land, Lotus Cobra or if none in hand, Kaleidostone, Khalni Heart Expedition or Trace of Abundance.
3rd: depending on how lucky I was with Lotus Cobra, and lets say I was, and have 2 in hand from draw, play the second Lotus Cobra, play a fetchland (2 in the pool), tapsac for whatever it fetches (4 in the pool). Harrow saccing a tapped land(5 in the pool, 3 untapped land) at this point it is possible to Warp World, but having only 5 permanents on the field doesn't make it worth it. Oracle of Mul Daya (1 in the pool, 3 lands untapped) hopefully flipping up a fetchland, if not, hopefully play one from hand, and btw, I am saying hopefully a lot, but this does work a lot more often than not. so say it was a fetch land, thats 5 in the pool, 4 land untapped. Siege-Gang Commander/Bloodbraid Elf/Kaleidostone bringing more stuff onto the field. maybe even an Ob Nix if i had one in hand.
4th: before drawing, if the top card of the deck flipped up by Oracle is a land, play it to the field, then again if the next card is a land, finally drawing the third card. dropping whatever is left in my hand before warp worlding. like i said before, Ob Nix + even just 2 fetchlands is devastating, plus now that I'm running the Siege-Gang Commanders, I can sac off their tokens and themselves for the added dmg to finish the opponent off.

Anything that your opponent does to slow you down does only that. for instance, killing a Lotus Cobra can be annoying, but it doesn't stop the deck from working. Whats more, with the Siege-Gang Commanders now in the deck, Meddling Mage no longer halts Warp World, as Siege-Gang can kill Meddling Mage. Any other counters or field clearing can avoided by playing carefully.
Even if he is a fallen Planeswalker, hes still the boss of the deck.

There are poor creatures, strong creatures and Ob Nixilis! Players with black decks must have!

☆☆☆☆☆ (0.0/5.0)
Ob used to be Garruk, he lost to Lily and we got this beast... sucks to be him.

I agree that trample feels better (since he used to be green and all), however on a card like this it would push him over the edge... there is already a small enough window to deal with him (outside of white who can hide behind a Baneslayer) before he kills you.

What's funny is that the power creep that creates cards like this keeps the game interesting... how far can they push things and keep it balanced?

Remember when a one drop had a total of 2 between it's power and toughness? Now, look at how many one drops are available with a total of 3-4 power/toughness in standard. They are making the game more aggro and good mid-range to control decks will continue to get harder to find.

So, how do you rate an Ob Nixilis? Well, on the Planeswalker turned creature scale he beats the pants off a Blind Seer (Urza)! The fact is, no matter how much we may want to rant about this creature being broken, if he's in our collection we will want to pick him up and play with him... just like Baneslayer Angel, Counterspell, Lightning Bolt, and Overrun. Some cards are great and you will always play them when you can... and other cards are Sorrow's Path, Autochthon Wurm or Vizzerdrix... Which would you rather them print more of?

For a mythic rare, I also must say it's not all that rare. I got one in a fat pack, and my friend got three within a week of Zendikar being out.

Without fetchlands, I wouldn't say he's that great. Whispersilk Cloak him and then he's a major threat. But without something like that, he's still good for life drain, and that gets annoying fast.

Every draft I pray I see this guy. With how little removal there is in Zendikar drafts, he would be incredibly hard to stop. Would love to put him in a BG deck with a Savage Silhouette on him - he'd pretty much need a Journey to Nowhere to stop him.

I run three of these nice guys in a BWG landfall deck, which also sun four copies of Knight of the Reliquary. He often pops off the top of your deck at the moste convenient timesm, when you for example have godt the mane to play him, a fetchland in hand and at least one copy of Knight of the Reliquary on the battlefield. When this happens your opponent will just go: "uh-oh, do I die?"

Very good card, although legendary. Obviously he's been a planeswalker. But him being Garruk, is unlikely. I believe that the Zendikar block belongs to the battle between Jace and Chandra, since we've already been dissappointed about Chandra Ablaze, and Jace, the Mind Sculpturer has been revealed, to be a part of the Worldwake expansion. However, since we already got one black planeswalker in the block (Sorin Markov), I think it is most unlikely that we'll get another one in this block.

But, he could be Garruk, or come back as a planeswalker in White, since it is the color we caven't seen yet. To the point thet he might be Garruk, I don't see the flavour text matchin this scenario since, it was Liliana who defeated him. Nothing like: His spark lost, he plots revenge upon the plane whose corrupting mana fractured his soul. Which indicates that it's the plane that caused the loss of his spark.

Does anyone know of a card or combo to stop the life loss when Ob gets his landfall on? I tried a gatherer search for any card with "if you would lose life" but all that came up were cards that read if you would take damage which you're not if Ob gets his ability off.
Help? My friend plays a landfall + warpword+ Ob deck and I'm having trouble coming up with easy fixes to get around Obs power.

blue/green - Mind Control, then Harrow (what now ***?)
white - i think we all know (Path to Exile)
black - i dunno, Tendrils of Corruption? Bone Splinters?

All jokes aside, it was one of those things that failed to find an uber-useful niche for itself outside of the most hilarious wincon ever - the awesome and hilarious fun that is Warp World. 5 lands + this guy = pretty much game.

so i had an idea for who he might be. there were three planeswalkers in the beginning who trapped the three eldrazi in the eye of ugin, right? there was Ugin, Sorin Markov, and another mystery one whos name we do not know. what we do know is that after the imprisonment of the eldrazi, the land of zendikar adapted an unfriendly defense against future predators. Ob's flavor text says that the land fractured his soul. also, the eldrazi were released when the eye of ugin was found. so here is my theory: Ob could have once been the mysterious planeswalker, then after the imprisonment of the eldrazi, the plane took his spark. Now, after wandering around the plane for thousands of years, he finaly found the hidden eye of ugin and freed the eldrazi to take the revenge that is stated in his flavor text....

BTW great card: 5/5

Awesome other combos are Xathrid Demon, using him to sacrifice Ob and murder all of your foes at once, and Reiver Demon to clear his path.

Extremely powerful, anyone who doubts his power hasn't played (against) him. My only problem is the fact that he is a mythic rare demon, yet he he has absolutely no drawback or risk whatsoever. Usually mythic rare demons are about immense power but at a risk of them turning on you if their demands are not met, making them so excitingly dangerous to play. This has none of that demonic game mechanic at all. He should have had something additional like "If a land doesn't enter the battlefield during your turn, Ob Nixilis deals 3 damage to you during your end step." As it is now, he might as well have been a vampire, a zombie or other black creature (I play demons a lot).

Turn 1: Black Lotus, black lotus, ob nixilis, swamp.
Turn 2: Black Lotus, black lotus, dark ritual, balduvian rage.
Turn 3: Any land.

Turn 1: Opponent takes 3 life.
Turn 2: Opponent takes 14 life.
Turn 3: Opponent takes 3 life.
TOTAL: 20 life lost.

All in all though, he definatley deserves mythic status. His ability is just too good, seeing as there is so much land fetching going on anyway.

2ND:Demons are being's of death, corruption, hate and evil. Why would he want to imprison the eldrazi(which are being's of death, corruption, hate and evil.)???

@divine_exodus: Yeah, let me know if that extremely unlikely scenario ever happens for you without proxy cards. Take a picture while you're at it.

This seems optimal in a deck splashed with green or with mana acceleration cards like Dark Ritual; otherwise casting it on turn 5 slows it down quite a bit. Still, I've had this guy grow to be a 21/21 creature before, so holding onto Fetches as long as you can works great as well. Who cares if you're losing one life if your opponent's losing 3 while pumping your creature?

I love this guy, but as a hardcore demon fan, i dont think this really personifies the way black works. Maybe if the landfall was "You lose three life and put three +1/+1 counters on Ob" it would seem more demon like. this card doesnt punish you enough for summoning him. Love Ob, but he does have a lot to do to live up to suicidal black.

1st - Earth mage. Landfall ability. Are you seeing the connection here? More land not only makes him stronger, but it makes him take out his rage on your opponents. Considering he used to be a 'walker, the connection isn't too far off.

2nd - Why would the Necromancer in Diablo want to help save the world? Well duh, so he can rule it! Assuming this guy was a the third walker, and was a demon before the whole "steal your spark" thing, he would have plenty of motivation to stop any threat to his power.

3rd - The unnamed 'walker -IS- someone in the story. And Urza is inside Karn, or something...I never really understood that.

Urza is dead. Completely. The only thing in Karn was his spark (some mystical property that gives planewalkers their power). That's it. And Karn sacrificed it to close one of those time rifts a while back. So yeah, Urza isn't coming back any time soon, short of some comicbook-esque, "OMG! Space radiation mixed with the Aurora Borealis while the planets lined up...etc" revival.

But I agree. This is the first time I heard of the theory of him being the third 'walker but it makes sense to me. It would also be why he wasn't there to meet Sorin when they had planned during the original pact, he could no longer 'walk' to that point. I think Wizards maybe planned on making a confirmed connection there but decided against it later on in favor of maybe revisiting the storyline later. This way they have a 'sort-of' conclusion to the story, but in a few block, can say "Oh no, Obby wasn't THAT 'walker... it was this guy" or even maybe revisit Obby's story. I mean, Sorin was one of the trio, and the newest set (IND) is his 'home' plane. So we are probably going to get to see more into Markov's past now.

I find a lot of the speculation on this guy pretty amusing. It is really disappointing that, much like Iona, this guy got pretty much no face-time story-line wise, despite being a huge deal card-game wise (both legendary mythics with clearly grand status and ability). But really guys, Urza, Garruk? His name is Ob Nixilis, losing your spark doesn't mean you lose/change your name, even if you became a demon.

The third planeswalker of the trio that sealed the Eldrazi was Nissa Revane, if I'm not mistaken. Thus, why she and Sorin are featured in a lot of the promo art for Zendikar block.
SomeGuy007
★★☆☆☆ (2.5/5.0) (1 vote)
@Orzhov Ghost Council: No. Not even close. The original trio that sealed the Eldrazi were Sorin, Ugin, and a currently unnamed lithomancer. Nissa was featured heavily in the plot of Zendikar because she was the planeswalker that Sorin found to help reinforce the bonds of the Eldrazi prison. She then proceeded to screw over her entire plane by releasing the eldrazi on Zendikar, thinking that they would just leave once they would set free.

@thewrathofshane Nah, he isn't unbalanced. He can be easily dealt with in most colors, and he is a 5-drop. I'm not saying he isn't a great card, but he isn't what I'd call "broken". Sure, he's good in a landfall deck- but so is every card with landfall. So what if you use fetchlands? He is a 5-drop, as I said previously. I've won games in less time than that, and lost them in that time too.

While this guy breaks a lot of molds on 'color pie' grounds and whatnot, he is IN flavor for 'worldbuilding'.

This is more or less what I'd expect a 'Landfall Demon' to be like, especially if their schtick is 'I am a ***ed off broken Planeswalker'. So this person almost gives you the power of Loyalty Abilities.
The only thing is, SOME meager kind of cost should be associated with him. Thing is, the usual 'Black prices' of discarding a card or sacrificing a something are probably way overpowered to put on this guy, for power reasons. They made him WEAKER by making him STRONGER. "Dumb Timmy Jolly Green Giant'' logic.

If they'd put basically any cost besides life loss on him, the synergies would have been just too incredible. Why didn't they make you lose life though? Bear in mind, this was in the -same set- as Lotus Cobra and the set -before- Jace, the Mind Sculptor.
They were still learning how to make Mythic Rares and this feels like it's ok to exist, just not so ok to reprint, when you realize that Mythic Rare Technology was actually very primitive and only just being discovered and explored back then.

OK, done with Melvin and Johnny issues, let's go to Vorthos:

"Vorthos, do you think this guy could be Planeswalker #3 of Sorin's Team?"
"Well, considering all we have to go on that could give us any concrete idea of who that mystery person was is that they are some kind of lithomancer, then Green or Red would be my best bet for a previous color alignment, and this Black Demon could be the product of a soul like that being destroyed."
"But isn't that all fairly generic stuff?"
"Well, yes. it's not like we know he was a Vulshok geomancer or a Dwarf architect. I mean this missing planeswalker character could even be White. Just probably not Blue, because the general flavor of Zendikar feels too down to earth-y."
"Alright, well do have ANYTHING else for us about this mystery?"
"Yes. There's a high likelihood the unknown Walker is NOT an Extraordinary species like Dragon, Sphinx, Hydra, Octopus, or Angel. Also probably not another Vampire. These are the sorts of types that would just have been -mentioned- because they're so extra special. The Third Walker must be a humanoid, or else a strange species on the same order of power as a humanoid."

This guy is pretty much a classic Demon in one way though...
... he works extremely well with Dark Ritual, as the earlier you get him, the more lands you can throw out to cause more pain!

It's flavor text like this (and whatever it does or does not imply) that made Zendikar block so fun and interesting.

I'm reading the background story of MTG. Its interesting that this guy use to be a Planeswalker but lost his power.

Hmmm .... overall, a terrific design; think about it guys:

1) ramp up land, cast him turn three or four through some machinations

2) play land

3) deal three damage, get 3 +1/+1 counters

4) cackle like a bond villain

5) do it all over again.

i'm just saying though ... this goes well with Liege of the Tangle, provided you have a ramp deck. It'll be the gift that keeps on giving (for you at least)

5/5. this is a seriously powerful card.

I really want to build an EDH deck using him, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and 97 swamps.

What?

What I keep hearing is "he can be killed by lightning bolt, he sucks" but you know what, play him before you play your land per turn then he's basically a 6/6 for 5 CMC. He's fantastic
