Combine it with whispersilk cloak (provides shroud and makes it unblockable) and anything to make it indestructible, and taking this thing down will be like dismantling a bomb in the middle of a battlefield.

God, I want one of these.

yes true_mumin i agree with your point. you are wise beyond your years.... where in (wrath of god)s name is lightening greaves??? i miss them so much, and with cards like madrush cyclops its not like it would be the end of the world to reprint them... and by thye way if god had put shroud on this, this couldent get indestructable and then wrath of god would get it... but then again theres always path to exile.

Pair her up with Whispersilk Cloak and it's only a matter of time before you win the game. Only way around that combo is to use Planar Cleansing. What was that about overpowered white cards? ;)

Giving it indestructability is not bad, but a bit dull.

Personally, I like the idea of putting two in play and using Master transmuter to bounce and return them if they're in danger.

Platinum Angel, the only angel I don't like. Mostly because you have to use a lot of resources to get it into play and protect it, and then the only thing it does is preventing you from losing. I prefer winning to not losing.

Pretty broken card... but couple of blue cards like Dream Leash or Mind Control, and the tables are turned! Got one of these in my first 2010 booster, a pretty good start!! Goes really well in Esper, with Master Transmuter and Sphinx Summoner, and if somone does destroy it, can just use Hegemon or Protomatter Powder to bring it back, mwahahaha!

usually by the time i have this out i have played darksteel forge, a great combo for my artifact deck. need to give it shroud though. i was sitting at -8 life once with the aforementioned combo, and platinum angel was returned to my hand. also nice to play sculpting steel after platinum angel, ya know, as backup

This card is too powerfull in limited and the effect it has isn't that simple to be used in a core set imho.

I pulled this card AND Whispersilk in a pack the other day, and I have to say, I prefer the shroud combo a lot more than an indestructibility combo. One, it works loads better to have two artifacts in my Esper deck than just an artifact and an enchantment, but I also like just having the protection from all the RFG spells, spot removal stuff, and things that force it to block other creatures. My only worry when I play it is to see that person playing with three plains tap out for six with a smirk on their face... ;_;

Yeah, it's a strong card. Your just one spell or enchantment away from winning a gam, or at lest, making it very, very hard for your opponant to win it. Of coruse, with it being an artefact, makes it vunrible to certain spells which can also taregt artefacts, but played well, you'll rule the battlefield.

I recall a guy at a card shop wanting to buy this card from a friend of mine- he didn't play Magic, he just thought it was one of the most absurd lines of text he had ever seen on a card in a CCG.

But no, it's honestly not broken. Just wish it wasn't Mythic now. It just means it's even less likely for me to get them.

You can do even better (in my eyes) than the Master Transmuter trick by putting Momentary Blink on Isochron Scepter (or just casting it as is). You only need one Angel for this, because the game doesn't check for state-based actions during the Blink's resolution, which is the only time it's out of play, yet it will still foil targeted removal. (Yes, shroud would be more effective, but the Blink and Scepter are more fun and more flexible than most shroud-granting options.)

On an unrelated note, I love the design of this card. This line of text couldn't go on a card that was just an enchantment or an artifact or a creature, because each of those cards would have colors unable to deal with them once they're in play; but put it on an artifact creature, and suddenly everyone can kill it (or at least bounce it, which is good enough).

Faced this card down in a draft last night. I got worried as soon as I saw it, cause I was playing blue/white with mostly enchantment-based removal, so I wasn't sure if I'd be able to deal with it. But luckily she blocked and I used a Divine Verdict. I was actually looking forward to the possibility of Mind Controlling it in game 2, but she never showed up. Yeah, it's a scary card, but it costs 7. Not overpowered.

Just with any other card, there's a really simple way around this card regardless of how you enchant it. If it has shroud, simply return the enchantment to the owners hand or destroy said enchantment, then getting rid of the angel is as simple as any other creature. Just keep getting their health as low as you can, and if they're at 0 or less life, then make your move to destroy it.

I still got the ones from Mirrodin, where I focused a deck just on getting it out not only with Darksteel Forge, but also with Leonin Abunas and Mycosynth Lattice at the same time! It was convoluted and hard to pull off, but the number of spells any person could possibly have that can deal with it can be counted on one hand. (Although this number a guess, I'd love to be proven wrong)

I like the idea of keeping it safe with the master transmuter, even though you need at least two angels out to keep yourself from getting vulnerable. If you have access to Sculpting Steel or Mizzium Transreliquat it makes having that second copy a lot easier.

It's why I need a few transmuters myself, since my two copies of this card are sitting in a nifty little Mishra deck that just loves having everything at least twice. Although I could throw in a few Whispersilk Cloaks in the meantime, It's always something good to have in multiples when working with any sort of creature based combo (the free attacks are just icing on the cake).

It is very nice when your opponent casts this angel, at least if you're playing a control deck and you are able to play your ( in this case my ) Gather Specimens. This Angel is really good. And i agree that you could better give Platinum Angel shroud than indestructable. Shroud really makes things hard once it's on the field protecting the angel and thus the player.

To everyone saying "lol this and indestructibility is OP" or "put whispersilk cloak on and lol at your opponent," I have had to deal with both scenarios. Naturalize, Solemn Offering, Fleshbag Marauder, Planar Cleansing into Doom Blade, etc all work wonders.

It's a good card, but has its weaknesses like every card does. High mana cost, vunerability, and being a high value target are just a few of the problems with a card like this. The biggest problem is lulling its player into a false sense of security. Whats gonna keep you from taking those 2 Stampeding Rhinos to the face? You cant lose! Until they Naturalize and Doom Blade, or any other combination of removal cards. Not to mention, enchant/artifact removal is a big sideboard element, as well as something many people main deck.

I guarantee in game 2 they're going to save a Cancel, Unsummon, etc. for it.

If you do whispersilk cloak it all the opponent has to do is get the cloack off of it by returning it to your hand or destroying it and then they can go after your creature. Same with enchantments. Still...this card is pretty devistating since it stops thouse enchantments that win the game for you if you meet certian conditions such as mortal combat.

Overrated in my opinion. Gives you a false sense of security. Any bounce/steal/destroy/whatever effect can make short work of it and of you as well.

Even if you give it shroud AND make it indestructible there are many ways of getting rid of it. sudden spoiling for example, or innocent blood, and many many other ways.

I mean, it's a 4/4 flyer for 7 mana, which, by itself, is pretty bad. And it's an artifact and a creature, which means it dies very very quickly. It's only powerful if combined with many other cards to protect it, and even then your opponent might have answerse. And you could have just replaced the angel and dozens of cards with something that actually wins you the game, instead of stalling it.

The effect is powerful of this card, but in my opinion it's very overrated. If I'm right it never appeared in any tournament worthy deck either.

Why would you want this in your deck?
So you can't lose? So what?
I'd prefer to win than to not to lose.
Only valuble in a blue deck to buy time, and even then, there are better and cheaper cards to do so.

A very deserving candidate for the relatively new mantle of Mythic Rarity. I like that this is in the core set because it absolutely epitomizes the power that cards have to override the rules; when my friend told me about this card while I was still a newbie, I was convinced it couldn't be real. But nope...in Magic, nothing's impossible.

I like this card. It has answers, as has been said, but that's true of every card out there, and the effect is an extremely potent one. It also stands up to Pacifism and most burn. If nothing else, it's a must-remove threat that can't be allowed to stay on the field, in the most literal possible sense.

To those who ask why would anybody play with this card ("I'd rather win than just not lose!"), you aren't looking at it from a Johnny point of view:

(Type 1 deck)
Turn 1 on the draw: Tolarian Academy, Lotus Petal, Mox Diamond
Tap Mox to play Sol Ring
Tap Sol Ring to play Isochron Scepter, imprinting Final Fortune
Tap Tolarian Academy to play Timetwister for 7 more cards
Use Lotus Petal + remaining mana from Academy to use Scepter to take another turn via Final Fortune

Turn 2: Mishra's Workshop
Tap Workshop and Academy and Mox to play Platinum Angel (can't lose because of Final Fortune now)
Tap Sol Ring to use Scepter to take another turn via Final Fortune

Rinse and repeat as many times as you please, attacking each turn with Angel and any other threats you may have until opponent is dead.

This is obviously the nut draw in this situation, but you get the idea. Basic goal is to set up infinite turns. Sure it wouldn't be Type 1 tournament competitive, but it sure could be a fun as all get out of a deck to put together and play with. I used the cheaper alternatives here as well, but would of course be much better with Black Lotus and the original Moxen instead of Petals and Diamonds.

Everyone is saying how this card doesn't work in play, I must disagree.

I use this in a blue artifact deck with tons of counterspells and sroud-giving enchants. The only thing to remember is that this won't win the game it just gives you protection. You can use this to defeat your opponent while you're already at 0 life. Much better protection than a wall.

This card is also extremely useful as the best distraction card in the game. While its up no one will be after me or my other creatures giving my heavy hitters like Guile or Inkwell Leviathan to do their job.

An excellent card as long as u remember to defeat your opponent instead of just depending on it to make u invulnerable

There's a fairly elegant solution to this and all other ultimate/unstoppable/OP creatures. Platinum Angel, Progenitus, Darksteel Col., Baneslayer Angel, basically anything that counts as a creature: blue/black control, drop Telepathy on the board for U so you know the second they draw their trump, then Treacherous Urge.

Why kill it when you can own it?

★★★☆☆ (3.8/5.0) (2 votes)
This is clearly a controversial card. The fact is, any card has a weakness. Anybody complaining about how their guys keep dying to some removal spell had better get a reality check. Not even shroud protects against a Wrath of God. Indestructibility is nullified by exile, bounce, and sacrifice. Wizards makes SURE that there are ways to deal with everything. An invincibility has to have a way around it, lest the card ruin the game. This explains why the mana cost is so high and why the card has the weaknesses of both artifacts and creatures. This explains why indestructibility and shroud are getting weaker. THERE ARE ANSWERS.
On the other hand, this card will win games when the opponent has no response. By all means, protect it and try to use it as your win condition. Just make sure you have a back-up plan.

JacksJokeShop, majinara... Ok, you two DO realize you are stating the ovious, right?
I mean, yeah all cards have their weakness as Jacksjokeshop said, so why do you two go on about how one can destroy this card and such, it's no secrete... And the thing is, not ALL decks are built with all these and/or any of these destructive cards that can stop platnuim Angel, otherwise no one would play the card and it'd be pointless to have made it. Many such as me just play for fun and don't worry about destroying EVERYTHING they come across when building their deck. They just build one with some sort of theme, and around that theme may or may not consist of destructive cards for many if any situations. Not about winning anyhow, just fun, so who cares if you can or can't destroy it?? Or how? It's completely beside the point entirely.
I can't speak for everone but all I care about is what people think of the card; would you use it or no? Is it a fun card or not... The flaws in it are ovious lol. You can't present a card that someone can't find flaws in or rather ways to destroy, so why bother mentioning such things about this one?
EVERY card can be destroyed in so many ways it aint even funny! MTG has done a awesome job in making sure there are thousands of ways to stop each card, so to speak...

I think it's a nifty card, hard to get, but nifty... Not a card I bank on winning the game with, but helps to slow if not stop my possible demise in an amazing way! Haven't tried the deck yet, since I added the card (plus Magebane armor & Whispersilk Cloak) lol, but the idea of having it is to slow my possible defeat if not stop it entirely lol.

Nice card, but easy to counter or return to hand, even if it has shroud (by lightning greaves for example). Simply cast Into the Roil, and then shatter, or blaze, or electrostatic bolt...Whatever ya got that kills it, gets rid of it, or takes control of it. If you have an artifact heavy deck with her and Master Transmuter or Copper Gnomes , consider putting Filigree Angel in there too in case you get under 1 health.

I've been thinking about adding this into my artifact deck. This in conjunction with Darksteel Forge would make it quite, quite secure. Unless of course my opponent has any cards to exile artifacts. Master Transmuter + Ethersworn Canonist + this card = watch your opponent scoop. Just have a Negate handy for spells like Day of Judgment and the like. You don't need to do anything; just sit back and watch him run out of cards to draw (eventually).

I am surprised by all the comments about how ineffective this card is. Good players always look at and scrutinize a card's potential. This will not be a mythic rare if it's THAT lame. Deck-builders need to tap inside their inner-Johnny when dealing with a card like this. I see this card anchoring type 1 control decks. It might not be as strong in the current metagame, but in Vintage -- wow.

At least it's not blatantly obscene like Baneslayer Angel. 4/5

-rise from the grave
doesn't have any specific mana cost so it wouldn't put any extra strain on a black deck
assuming you're fighting a black deck and you need to discard a card... discard the angel and summon for less!
will keep it protected from doomblade and hideous end and the like

-neurok stealthsuit
anti-artifacts are a dieing breed
BAM, doomblade, hideous end, tombhex, journey to nowhere, etc... all USELESS.

-death's shadow
if you can go negitive (assuming your angel is VERY secure) go down fast and get a massive attack creature to get a 1-hit-kill

One of the best cards in the game. Able to stand up to any single burn card, give it shroud and you've basically won the game. This is a pretty powerful card and I disagree with anyone who thinks otherwise.
You would have to build a humongously powerful deck around it however.
One that has redicilous mana exceleration.
Yes, you can try to bounce everything but that also means you need to have the right cards for it.
And not everybody is packed with bounces or counterspells (or feels forced to play this way to stand a chance against a super Platinum Angel deck).
Platinum Angel is best protected in a white green deck where you can set up the most rigorous protections. This will help you in the long run in multiplayer (especially against 3 or more opponents).
But if you make the right deck you can also manage (easily) to win against a single player with Platinum Angel in your deck (preferably as many copies as possible).
It's overrated as a mythic I can agree on that, but most definitely not as a rare.
It all depends on how much money you want to spend on constructing a powerful deck with PA in it (and wether your friends are going to accept your deck setup).
Ofcourse I speak only from a casual side of view.
It's worth 4 out of 5 stars at least.

If you have both Abyssal Persecutor and Platinum Angel in play on your side of the battlefield, all players' souls are permanently trapped in the game - forever (unless the cards can be destroyed, or they concede).

One of the most definite and effective stalls in the game, but the player has to keep in mind that that's all it is: a stall. As neat as it is, this won't win the game for you. If it was an 8/8 with flying, trample, and shroud, then yes, it might win the game for you, but as it stands it can only buy you time to set up what you need, and this is probably where noobs fail when they use this card.

Of course, if you do actually want to win the game with this and its artifact friends, just use Darksteel Forge, like I do. Most of my opponents scoop after that.

My only real complaint with this card is it can make games more boring. I also hate seeing it put in decks semi-randomly - too many people put this in a deck even if it doesn't fit that well. I've had several frustrating losses to weak decks that only won because they had this out. But then I'm more of a combo player.

My favorite combos with Plat Angel are all black related (although using this with final fortune or one of the future sight pacts is fun) - jump into negative life totals and then play repay in kind, discard phage and bring him into play from my graveyard safely, and just otherwise use it's power in more interesting ways than "you have to get rid of a creature first."

Erik's Random card 6/5/2011
Magic 2010 was our first set to have reprinted cards as Mythic Rares. Aaron Forsythe (the lead designer) asked me (the lead developer) to name a few cards, other than the Lorwyn Planeswalkers, that came to mind as cards which could be reprinted as Mythic Rares. I came up with Darksteel Colossus, Platinum Angel, and Time Warp. He was doing this primarily to test my instincts; this was my first lead, and he had to know what he was getting.
Platinum Angel is a very clear Mythic Rare. "You can't lose the game" is super cool, but only in very small doses. From the development side, there isn't much to say. She was in the design hand off, and I never considered replacing her.

People, seriously. There are some many ways to deal with this thing, okay? It isn't even SLIGHTLY broken. You can remove it with everything from a Shatter (conveniently reprinted in the same block this originally came from, if I'm not mistaken) to a Splinter (which has much greater uses, but still). You can counter it, burn it, it dies to board wipes, it doesn't regen unless forced, and it just generally isn't that powerful. Grab a Leatherback Baloth and a Prey upon and it dies just as easily.

You noobs want an example of a broken card? Try Voice of Resurgence. Not enough for you? How about a Stoneforge Mystic? How about Sol Ring? Point is, if you honestly think that something like this is broken, you don't know what a broken card is.
